[ he tells her he wants to make amends. to change. he gives her a dozen lines about acting on pure raw emotion that each of his actions were a loss of calculations. peter feeds her a dozen lies and hopes she hooks unto some of them. hopes she believes because once she's convinced, the rest of them will follow. when was the gorgeous and clever lydia martin wrong after all? she was the hardest to sway but he had to try.

he spares kate argent's life to earn her favors and he doesn't question her about the loss she feels when she figures out that jackson whittemore leaves an empty room in district 4. he tells her that he's human and the finality of that takes precedence over anything else. he tells her he's different and he's on her side. on scott's side. lies through his teeth and says he wants nothing more to see the boy he bit succeed.

he says he's forgotten what it's like to feel invincible. that being an omega doesn't compare to how deaf he feels now that there aren't a million heartbeats echoing beneath ribs. that smells are no longer overwhelming and things like coordination and balance are things that have to be relearned. he tells her that being human is worst than being dead. that each step is the end of a race instead of the start of a sprint.

he tries to use her sympathies as his strengths and he makes her trust him.

a portion of the immune are on a mission and he finds that he and lydia are the only two that have stayed behind. they were supposed to arrive yesterday and the network's silence has become a homage to everyone's worry. he shows up at her door. a weary expression forced on his face. ]

Cora and Derek have decided to take their leisurely time. [ he greets her when she opens the door. ]

[ there's condescension and annoyance bubbling at the surface. his 'worry' purposefully amplified to put on a show for her. ]

[ she doesn't forgive him entirely, but in the end it's too much effort to actively hate him. fighting takes energy she doesn't have here, where she's no sanctuary or routine to cling to, no school work to focus on, and zombies to fret over instead. they've got territorial unitarians that want to make a fuss in district 4, a flesh eating virus, mysterious beneficiaries, organized ventures into danger zones where death waited, the occasional all out shift of consciousness, and not enough alcohol to make any of it tolerable. what was the point of throwing parties when there wasn't anything to celebrate?

some make do by staying busy. nearly all of her friends have some sort of self sacrificial complex that leads them to volunteering for the next outer-dome mission. stiles' arm is still in a sling, and she implores at least him to stay (allison is too stubborn, scott too stupid; isaac she doesn't know too well, but she knows he'll stick to scott like a lost puppy; and while she doesn't outright beg either of the hale's to stay, she's not quiet about her disapproval of their choice). but they all leave, and lydia gives up her uninspired job search in favor of sitting in her stark white apartment and pretending to be interested in a book about folklore.

she doesn't have the emotional retention to worry about peter hale now that he can't hurt her. she has nightmares about the devil now when she dreams now, and almost regresses to biting her nails. but like she keeps her issues under wraps, she keeps her nails painted. for a time she ignores him, but he keeps insisting that he's sorry - that he's changed. and (her gut says she shouldn't believe him, that he has plenty of reasons to say sorry without actually meaning it, but convinces herself that) she sees no reason he'd be so insistent if he wasn't after some sort of forgiveness. so the animosity she holds in her tone whenever she speaks to him begins to wane, she catches herself feeling actually bad for him (what's it like to suddenly be different and something you're not used to? well, lydia could tell you, and her sympathy is limited, but it's present), and there have been one or two occasions where lydia is even the one to initiate a conversation.

but she's never invited him over.

it's something of a shock to see him just outside her doorway, and she blinks in polite surprise. they're not to the point where she's going to instantly invite him in for coffee or orange juice, but she doesn't slam the door in his face either. her shoulders are a little tense, but he's not a supernatural being anymore; can no longer hear her heartbeat or smell the resentment on her. ]

They all have, [ she entertains his conversational starter, leans on her door frame, and even gives him a cursory look - a once over for any obvious injuries (no, she's not concerned, shut up) before she looks him in the eye. ] Are you worried?
