i'm singin' in the rain

the rain meme

Ah, rain—the precipitation that the whole world has a love/hate affair with. It waters the garden for free and ruins baseball games. It cools you off in the summer and it causes more ice and sleet to appear in the winter. Sometimes it is lovely and falls at a decent pace for a few hours, other times, it blasts the whole eastern seaboard away.

Poems and songs have been written about it, people have danced in it, others have cursed its entire existence, and still more refuse to go out and drive in it.

Now it’s time to roll some dice and see what the weather will have in store for you today.

directions

1. Comment with your character, series, preferences, etc in the subject.
2. Roll a number between 1-5 with the RGN for an intensity.
3. Roll 1-15 with the RGN for a situation.
4. Reply to other comments and play the scenario out!
5. Don’t catch a cold!

intensity

1. DRIZZLE ☂ It’s not too heavy or too light of a downpour, just enough to wash away stuff in the air, water the ground, and clean up the streets.

2. MONSOON ☂ It’s horrible and awful! Rain is coming down in buckets, no one can get anywhere, the wind is whipping everything about, and now the cable is out.

3. SHOWER ☂ Reminds you of early spring, doesn’t it? A nice shower to make everything all green and smell fresh again. Lovely.

4. FLOOD ☂ While rain is good, it can sometimes be bad. Grab a boat!

5. CATS & DOGS ☂ You’re lucky with this one. It’s not the worst storm in the world, but it’s still pretty heavy. Be careful when driving!

prompts

1. A DARK, STORMY NIGHT ☂ You know all those stories that start off with a stormy night before something goes wrong: a murder, an attack by ninjas, a crime. It is one of the best known clichés in the world, and you’re stuck in the middle of it.

2. HUMIDITY ☂ It’s that time of the year again when the humidity rises and the rain has two options: make it worse or make it go away. Good luck getting the latter.

3. GRAY RAIN OF DEPRESSION ☂ We all know this one. Stuck in the middle of no where, or right after an argument, or something that leads to angst, the rain decides to express someone’s feelings in a physical form, serious or over the top.

4. QUIET MORNING ☂ Nothing to do, nowhere to be… sometimes the rain is a welcomed addition to a quiet day. Gives you an excuse to stay in, curl up in a warm blanket and a book, maybe a loved one or a cup of hot chocolate. With sprinkles.

5. PUDDLES ☂ After it rains, what is the number one thing you have to do? Go put on some rubber boots and splash around of course!

6. SUDDEN STORM ☂ It might have been predicted, but sometimes storms just sweep in and do their thing with little to no warning. Hope you’re not outside.

7. THUNDER & LIGHTNING ☂ Loud, surprising, scary, ominous, comforting, fantastic to watch or listen to… some like thunder and lightning, others not so much. Of course, if this happens before a big confrontation, the universe is telling you something.

8. CAN’T GET WORSE ☂ You did not say that. You did not just say that. How many times does this need to be seen in movies and books before anyone learns?

9. STUCK ☂ No, no, no, no. This cannot be happening. What happened to the ten percent chance of rain? You forgot your umbrella and now you’re stuck in it!

10. RUINED PLANS ☂ You had all these wonderful plans to go outside, have some fun in the sunshine, do some errands, maybe a date… and the weather goes against them.

11. DANCING ☂ Sometimes rain is a cause for celebration, or you just feel like doing something spontaneous. Grab someone to join you and get wet!

12. RAIN BATTLE ☂ The most intense, important battles happen in the rain. Verbal spars, punching someone in the guts; it’s all dramatic and climatic. And no one slips.

13. DATE ☂ Aww, don’t let the weather ruin your date! It can be really romantic, being out in the rain, and it’s always fun to go with the flow.

14. A DAY INSIDE ☂ Sometimes, it’s just better to stay inside and enjoy something simple and easy like board games or catching up on TV shows, or maybe the bills.

15. WILD CARD ☂ Was there something I missed? Did you want to roll again or choose your own adventure? Go for it!

[ It's ironic that one of the things she disliked the most about serving on the outer frontier is happening right now, all around the M-class planet the away team is stuck on for the evening. The storm has come upon the city suddenly and with just enough ferocity for the captain to order them to stay put until it lets up, especially since they already have business with the natives. In Christine's case, there's only so much she can do for the sick children in the hospital before being instructed to get some rest; as gracious as the people are, they're also surprisingly empathic. Maybe it's the fact they can read her anxieties or simply the fact Christine has always worn her heart on her sleeve, but she can't say she's entirely reluctant to hurry back to the rest of the stranded crew.

On the way back to their allotted building, of course, it's just her luck that the ion storm picks up, trapping her (by her own will, because there is no way she's heading into the vicious rain) in a shallow alcove along the way. She'd like to think she does pretty well for the first five minutes, a hand clapped over her mouth. It's something of a record that not a peep is heard, but then the lightning strikes less than half a mile over and a short scream of fright erupts on impulse as she jolts on the spot. She should absolutely kill Jim for this later, even if it isn't his fault. The urge to stay as far from him as possible has finally eased and left a tired kind of friendship in its place, one of the reasons her transferal back to the Enterprise is now complete, but she must have been mad to volunteer for this. It's his influence, she knows it, him and his big blue eyes full of dares.

And now she's stuck in the sleet, cold and soggy like a sodden cat with mascara blotting the fingers covering her face, and this is her life of yelping under roiling mulberry-dark skies like an idiot.

Christine Chapel, she fervently thinks. You are a masochist. ]

[ It was all a matter of waiting out the storm now. Their objective complete, there was time to kill, and Spock... Spock came out to observe the weather. A seemingly mundane act, but there was just something reaffirming about being able to watch such chaos from the safety of a sturdy structure. It was dark, and it was cool beneath the overpass between buildings, standing just close enough that his nose felt damp and the tips of his ears were beginning to singe. A novelty, feeling the ground tremble for the brontide; even if he had weathered a good number of storms throughout his life, sheets of water weeping from the sky did hold a certain appeal for someone raised in a desert climate.

But then, there is a something within the storm, apart from it. A delay after the thunderclap, minute but perceivable enough for his ears, and... something. Spock had not realized his mind had allowed itself to open so much to nearby stimuli, but perhaps the best description was a lot like receiving a breath of fresh air after being locked inside of a place where he must keep his functions shallow; that is to say, he'd been more carefully managing himself in the presence of the empaths to limit undue transference. Surely the humans were enough.

Someone is out there, under distress. He thinks, perhaps, it is a native projecting, but he knows already before he even removes his tricorder that the signals he receives will be mottled and disrupted by the storm. It is not unlikely that there may be some debris or structural collapse, another consideration he takes on while he begins his attempt of triangulating the source from his admittedly faulty resources.

In the end, it's rather accidental. Spock is sprinting through the cold storm, trying to get a better bio-signature, and naturally finds the same alcove in hopes of doing the very same as Christine. It's probably the ice water soaking through his hair and down his spine but for a moment it looks like he is genuinely surprised to see the nurse there. ]

Nurse?

[ Hugging her sides as she tries to keep warm, it's when she least expects company that the pouring heavens deliver that to her too. Fingers smearing make-up off her cheeks, she startles when a tall figure veers around the corner, shoulders thumping into the cold wall as the blue blur rights himself to reveal Spock (I hate my life, I want to die, why isn't the ground opening up oh god) standing before her. He's soaked and gorgeous just as unprepared to find someone else under the meager shelter provided but even so the sight of him allows the tension in her shoulders to loosen. Why on earth would he be in the storm? He doesn't appear to be injured, perhaps there's something else underway. ]

Commander? [ Absently pulling bedraggled clumps of hair around her neck, she raises her brows inquiringly. ] What are you doing out in the —?

[ A flash of lightning atop a sudden boom of thunder cuts her off, hands flying to cover the startled shriek that erupts against her will. Jerking away on reflex, it puts her back in the corner, a heel scuffing against her bag of medical supplies, eyes squeezed shut.

There are so many reasons for her not to open them. ]

[ It takes a little self-awareness and control not to give in to the urge to shake off like an animal once he's found the semi-dry space, and identified his company as a familiar compatriot. He's beginning to press further against the wall, one hand moving for his tricorder while the other slicks hair back from his brow. Thunder falls once more, but there's nary a twitch from the Commander... until that shriek bursts forth. The tricorder stays in his belt. He waits, for the thunder to settle to something softer, where his even tone can carry over. ]

It seems I was searching for you. I heard a cry.

[ He isn't necessarily relaxing, but now that he seems to have found the source of his search, Spock is beginning to settle into the nook afforded to him, leaning his slender frame against the rain. A brief moment for looking above them at the overhang. ]

This area has structural integrity. There is no basis for you to be alarmed... Are you unharmed?

[ What do you mean you're afraid of decibels that can't challenge the integrity of your inner ear? ]

[ If it were just rain then she'd likely be making the most of the situation, stupidly slicked-back hair aside on his part. The last time she spoke to him one-on-one had to do with a check-list concerning the prescribed medications for the away mission and, all due respect to Spock's insane pull of attraction, she had been too busy doing her job at the time to indulge herself. It's so often the way on the ship. When least expected, people pop out of the woodwork coming from here or there; the trend still evidently carries over when they're off it.

His attention to the flying buttresses prompts a watery smile, amusement rooting amongst childish fears. If Jim had run over he would have had his arms around her by now and be cracking a dumb joke. Spock's confusion is a sight more uplifting in its own way, bolstered with a wry blend of relief that he's come to find her and mortification that he's heard her yowling like a cat not once, but twice. ]

I'm fine, Commander, sorry. I don't like Terran storms, let alone this one. [ Hands slide back to her arms and she hitches up what she intends to be a more solid reply. ] I was just on my way to return to the others, the hospital staff kindly dismissed my services for the evening.

[ Keyword being was. ]

[ All due respect to James Kirk's stupid boyish charms, Spock doesn't believe his presence or the embrace of his arms is a cure for all ills. He would be first to volunteer that comforting others was far from his forte - unless, of course, logical assessments and security probabilities were sufficient. ]

There are converters in five locations within an eight kilometer radius of our current location.

[ Silently, he raises a hand and slowly draws his index finger through the air, tapping invisible locations out in the abyss and somewhere through the wall. ]

The storms have been common enough over the progression of this civilization that the storm's energy can be harnessed for the facility's generators and their impact substantially diminished. It is not an efficient enough system to serve our own purposes of an expedient departure, but we are relatively safe here.

The closest entrance is... [ A nod back toward where he came. ] 40.2 meters northwest.

[ He sprinted about a quarter of a mile to get to you, Christine. If he seems a little out of breath, it's largely because of the chill. Spock rubs his hands together. ]

Perhaps it is more medically advisable to wait until the storm further abates.

[ That was probably true when Spock took off into the storm, but he had thought that someone might have been in trouble at the time. ]
