Opportunities present themselves in the field, strategic advantages are in the moment more often than not.

[ it's a fact that he knows jim would agree with him on, that on many occasions the risks outweigh the cost. it is precisely that thinking that lead jim into the warp core despite his knowing it was a one-way trip. spock had not entered the narada or the jellyfish under the assumption that it would result in his colliding with the ship. he is infinitely grateful for the prowess of the bridge crew—lieutenant sulu, uhura and chekov in particular—for their thinking on their feet and beaming him out before his death was an inevitability. ]

It was the only tactical advantage that would result in him saving billions of lives. Perhaps the incident at Nibiru was less impacting considering the small population, though the preservation of life is no less significant.

[ he has no response for the doctor concerning his last point, the temper flaring against nothing but stoic vulcan resolve. he does not deny the point brought up, nor does he bother to confirm it. here in the well lit silence of his satrfleet office they are at something of a intellectual, moral, and ethical stalemate. it's not often those happen, though he finds it a recurring theme with "bones". ]

Opportunities? [ he repeats it with incredulity. ] It wasn't an opportunity, it was a death wish.

[ he walks forward, scowling. ] We saved the people on Nibiru and you. I told Jim you'd let him die if he was in your place, you know that? And I was right, wasn't I. [ he stares into spock's face, searching for denial he knows isn't coming. when he doesn't see anything, it only makes him angrier. ] When he looked for someone to convince him you were worth saving, he looked to Uhura and me. Jim thinks better of you, for some fool reason, and he wanted to think you'd do the same for him if the roles were reversed. But you'll be happy to know no one was willing to lie for you. [ bones' gaze bores into spock's. ] Uhura and I didn't misrepresent you, even though I think you were damn wrong. The only thing we sacrificed was a rule that didn't apply anyway. Their survival and yours are equal. The same sacrifice you wanted to make for them is the same we'd want to make for you. It's the same Jim — [ he abruptly cuts off, then continues: ] You do understand that, don't you?
