You strayed into my home and into my heart

S T R A Y

Taking in strays is, all in all, an understandable vice. The dips in between their ribs, those large and forlorn eyes, they can help you forget the claws and the teeth and the danger lurking beneath fur. But the habit's a knife edge; your efforts may not be rewarded with kindness (animal instincts aren't discretionary) and you may get bit despite what you've overlooked. A stray doesn't care about pity. All it can know is survival.

These warnings apply to strays of the more human(oid) sort, too.

But what may even more perilous with this type than any drawn blood is what you can get when they grow to trust you. You can earn their undying loyalty...or their love. Either from such a wild thing is a precarious path to go down, if you allow yourself to do it.

[ Hello. Long time no see. Sorry for dropping off the face of the internet, but I didn't forget about our thread and I've love to continue if you're still interested. ]

Julie took in Charley's appearance and didn't believe a word of her explanation, but she was too polite to call her out outright.

"I see... why don't you come with me? My home is not far and you look as if you could use a cup of tea. Or coffee if you prefer."

She didn't intend on taking no for an answer, but she much preferred that the young woman agreed of her own free will than she have to press her. The woman in white was more than capable of doing so, but she liked Charley. She didn't care to mentally coerce her.

"I have been away for quite a while. I would appreciate the company."

And she was genuinely concerned. That really was the only ulterior motive she had at present.

That wasn't an offer that she could accept or decline, and she doesn't delude herself into thinking that for even a moment. There is also nothing that she wants less than accept.

But perhaps this is it. She doesn't believe in fate -or rather, she doesn't believe in fate as a neutral entity that is outside of the reach of humans. That would be silly. But if Julie is honest and she's really just asking her over for tea- okay, whom is she even trying to kid here.

Not that it matters. She has no choice, and thus she simply nods. No reason to raise further suspicions. Not without a serviceable plan B.

"Coffee, thank you." She produces a convincing grin, though the levity of it doesn't reach her eyes. "Tea just doesn't cut it for me."

Julie was most certainly inviting Charley over for tea... but also interrogation. Light interrogation. Friendly like. She couldn't help the young woman if she didn't know what was wrong after all.

"Perhaps you are just not drinking the right tea," Julie suggested with a smile. It was a tired smile. She was usually good at hiding things like that, but it had been a very long couple of months. She wanted nothing better than to crawl into bed and sleep for a few hours.

"This way."

Her house was indeed close, only a few blocks away. She led her guest up the walkway toward a well maintained Queen Anne, painted yellow. Julie did well for herself in the NWO and it showed. The furnishings appeared expensive, but it was cozy. It looked like a house someone lived in. She led Charley into the kitchen and gestured for her to sit down.

"Sit down, please. Have a seat at the table. I'll make your coffee."

The tiredness is curious - she doesn't think that she has ever seen Julie in any other state than perfectly put together. Perhaps it isn't just physical exhaustion? She tucks the thought away, into the carefully protected layers of her mind, and watches Julie as they walk and arrive, not too closely to be thought invasive or out of the ordinary, but with an eye for further signs of where the tiredness might hail from.

She pays due attention to the house and its furnishings, but her mind is on different matters - escape routes, additional persons that might be present, security measures, and so on. Half out of habit of many years on the Frontline, and half out of anxiety about all of this.

She sits, and it is then that she realizes how physically tired she is, too. No effects from withdrawal yet - she isn't expecting any to set in for a good while, months even, if she is careful. But simple physical exhaustion from having been up for over 24 hours now, and having been running around the city for most of that. "...thank you." The words are heartfelt. She might still not be at ease, but she really needs a coffee right now. And to sit down for a moment.

"Nice place you have here." That seems like a safe enough topic, at least. The safest that she can think of off the bat, and close enough at hand to be entirely natural.

"Thank-you. It's too big for one person really, but I do like it, when I'm actually able to spend some time away from the office. Please excuse the dust. I've been away for a time."

Julie was busying herself with making tea for herself now, boiling the water, and preparing the leaves. Once she's satisfied she returns to the table with two cups and places one in front of Charley before sitting down opposite her. She takes a slow drink of her tea, closing her eyes for a moment, before turning her attention to her guest again.

"Now, why don't you tell me the real reason I found you on the streets looking as if you haven't slept for days."

Her tone is gentle, still composed, but a little more human than her normal professional manner.

"...Because I haven't slept for days." That's not actually answering the question, but actually genuine and honest. Well, not quite. "I mean, not well, and not at all last night." So, that's the truth. Still not answering anything, but perfectly honest.

And reinforced with real feeling.

And also perhaps an opening to steer this conversation away from herself a bit, just for long enough to get some coffee into herself and feel slightly more on top. She doubts that she can really play this game well enough to keep up with Julie, but she can at least try. And she does genuinely worry a bit. She'd rather liked the other woman, after all. "You don't look much better, though."

Julie should brush that question off and change the subject. The project she's been working isn't top secret, but there is such a thing as security clearance. She doesn't do either of those things. Instead she just smiles wryly.

"I have spent the last few months with the Void Engineers."

And that would be enough to make anyone tired. Julie could have left it at that, but she continues, "And their latest Horizon Construct was a spectacular failure. There were children involved. I expressed my concerns and I've since been advised to take time off to reflect."

The way she says it leaves no doubt that she'd like to say more and none of it good. She is not happy. She is, in fact, quite angry with all involved. It's not the first time she's disagreed with her superiors, but it's the first time she's actually butted heads with them. She's aware that there may be serious consequences, but she can't bring herself to actually care in the moment.

She pauses to steady herself, refocusing on the issue at hand.

"But you're changing the subject. Why haven't you been sleeping?"

She chuckles softly at the mention of Void Engineers - yeah, that would do it. She's had some first-hand experience with them in their element herself way back in the day, before she was transferred.

The next part gives her pause, though, and she frowns lightly. "Children? I thought the establishment of a Horizon Construct was considered too straining for developing psyches?" Not that she's an expert in any way. But that doesn't seem to align with what they'd been saying back then.

She's not going to offer critique - not a hill she would die on one way or the other, and she knows testing techniques well enough to absolutely suspect that Julie is only saying this to put her at ease and get some comments out of her. Even more so with the disclosure that she's been chastised for expressing concerns.

Nope, not walking into that potential trap.

But still, she's curious.

And needs to respond to something herself. "I've been helping out a friend, and it's been eating up more time than I could really spare." She looks down at her coffee and prays that shock will keep her going without truly feeling anything about the loss. She needs the unreal feeling, the distant feeling, to continue for a while longer. "I think the matter is resolved, though, so I can hit the mattress later and not wake up until tomorrow noon or something, hopefully." Maybe. If she can find a safe place to stay.

"It shatters developing psyches."

There's pain in Julie's tone that she's too tired to mask, and she won't meet Charley's eyes.

"This Construct was meant to be different. It wasn't."

The minds of the children survived were broken, and so was Julie's heart. The project never should have moved forward. She can't help but feel responsible, and she's sure that when she closes her eyes to sleep, she will hear their screams. She's revealing too much, but it's been so long since she's had an honest conversation with another person. The words keep pouring out.

"I was a mother once, Ms. Campbell. I should have known better than to stay silent."

This - this is not what she expected when she followed Julie. At all. And she's not sure what to do with it, except for going along with it and trying to not been pulled away by the powerful currents of the conversation so deeply steeped in pain.

"You only said something when it was too late." It's not accusing. It's understanding. Repeating Julie's explanation in other words, giving them a slightly different shape to engage with. Automatic, perhaps, but also thoughtful. An achingly familiar, almost comfortable pattern. Just that the conversation isn't. The conversation is... more. In more ways than one.

"The damage could not be mended?"
fivemetaldragons: ([office] yeah sure)

sorry for the wait, work week has got me like... what day is it again?

[personal profile] fivemetaldragons 2018-02-02 01:49 pm (UTC)(link)
"Perhaps it could be in time."

Julie doesn't sound particularly hopeful. She doesn't know where the surviving children have been taken or how they are now being treated. She's sure that that's information they wouldn't dream of giving her. Not after she had reacted so negatively to the results of the experiment. She closes her eyes for a moment, centering herself, before returning her attention to her guest.

"I apologize. You don't want to know about any of this."

She could have even inadvertently put Charley in danger by telling her so much. She eyes the young woman across from her thoughtfully.

"Do you have some place to stay?"

No, no, she really doesn't buy Charley's story.

"I didn't hear a thing," Charley assures her. Ariana. She is Ariana right now, she has to be.

...Just that Ariana would never have found herself in this kind of predicament. Julie is lucky. This isn't Ariana. Ariana would probably have reported back about the Woman in White's words.

Charley, for obvious reasons, wouldn't.

Their answers to the next question differ as well. "Technically, yeah, but I'm not really in the mood to go back there right now. Had a big fight with the roommate." Well. Someone sure had a fight with the 'roommate'.
