(possible) SCENARIOS
1. PARENT & CHILD: So, have you been bad? You know what happens to bad kids...
2. OLDER SIBLING & YOUNGER SIBLING: If the parents aren't in the picture, someone has to take care of business.
3. OTHER FAMILIAL RELATIONSHIP: Keepin' it in the family.
4. TEACHER & STUDENT: Don't stand, don't stand so, don't stand so close to me...at least not during schools hours.
5. DOCTOR & PATIENT: An apple a day keeps the doctor away, unless you want to play.
6. CUSTOMER & STRIPPER/DANCER/HOOKER: Older people have the money, younger people need the money. Surely something can be worked out.
7. JAILBAIT: One of you better watch out, because this is trouble with a capital T.
8. THE BABYSITTER: ...you've seen the porn. I don't have to describe this.
9. CHOOSE YOUR OWN ADVENTURES: If you don't see something you want, make it up.

There's this thing about actions and unintended consequences. There's another about lemons and life and lemonade.

Somewhere in this world (at least Vrenille thinks it's in this world) a friend of his is lost. He, along with two others and a guide, set off to find him. There have been murmurings about a place called Westchester, but Vrenille no more knows where that is than he knows how to navigate his way through all the metaphysical landscapes that brought him here, crossing from one realm to the next. When he got separated from the others, he wasn't even sure he could explain how it happened.

But he's here in some city some indeterminate number of miles from where he's meant to be, and he might as well be broke for all the local currency he has. His clothes would pretty much stand out like a sore thumb if he hadn't snagged some guy's leather jacket off the back of a chair when he wasn't looking and stashed his weapons--including a gun with no bullets--into his knapsack.

What he needs is a toehold in this place, somewhere to sleep, someone to buy him a meal, a bit of money in his pocket. But even in another world, he has some old and well-honed skills. He just needs to adapt them to foreign soil.

He couldn't say just what it is about this particular older gentleman--his deportment, his poise...his hat?--but as unlikely a mark as he seems, something about him makes Vrenille want to try.

Seated on a building's stoop, he fingers a silver coin in his pocket and then, as the man passes him, tosses it onto the sidewalk so that it lands just behind him--tosses it so that he can "retrieve" it, bending down and chasing after him a step.

"Excuse me," he extends the coin between his fingers, "I think you dropped this."

It's the crucial moment, standing there with the silver between his fingers. Right then it's all in his eyes, which is tough because in this city, he's discovered, few people meet each others eyes for more than a moment. So far his previous attempts have met only with brusque dismissiveness--"Ain't mine, buddy," or occasionally a "Gee thanks." (He wonders what those men will think when they look at the coin they've taken later and realize just how foreign it is.)

This time, he's hoping, his luck might be different.

There's an art to letting your eyes say as much to a stranger as he needs his to do now. It has to be like Yeah, hey so we both know you didn't drop the coin, but this is me offering something to you that's not the coin either, if you take my meaning. And look, I've got this nice gentle smile. I'll be really good company, so treat me well, okay? But all in the eyes and in about four seconds flat.

Of course Vrenille doesn't know--couldn't begin to guess--that he's just approached a man for whom a single metal coin from another world might be a very significant item indeed.
