Intimate Bathing

the intimate bathing meme;

Grooming is an important part of many species' rituals. It keeps them clean, healthy, and content. And a good bath? It can change the whole tone of a day from terrible to relaxed and blissful.

But nudity is sometimes viewed as a weakness - and it is almost always sexualized - so bathing is often kept a private matter. If you do share these moments with someone, they're almost always a significant other or a sexual partner.

Like you're doing now.

Whether it be after a battle or after sex (or before sex, even), the two of you are going to get clean. Be sure to help each other out with that, won't you? After all, there are places on the back that just can't be reached...

HOW TO PLAY:
  • Comment with your character, your prefs, etc.
  • If there are other grooming-related practices or kinks you'd like to include, like shaving, hair washing, mention them!
  • Reply to others!

[ooc: Hey! I think either continuing the last thread would be good. Or maybe Baker Street is finally back in order and he invites her over there for the first time - has a whole night planned since it feels like a big deal having her in Baker Street. I'm fine with whatever you're feeling though.]

After that visit to Mary's grave, there's a subtle shift between them. Though he's still a sarcastic, oddly forgetful, insufferable weirdo, he's also slowly opening up more in private. He's finally able to put aside the image he's built up to protect himself, to be more sincere with the people he cares for in subtle but deeply felt ways. (He even starts talking to Mycroft without needing to be kidnapped or scolded into it, though it's still terribly awkward.)

And as the days lengthen and the reconstruction of Baker Street becomes less structural and more decorative, strangely enough, Sherlock finds himself spending more nights at Molly's place. Sometimes he has to cling to her in the dark, to breathe her in until the pain of whatever memory claws at him softens enough to let him sleep; more often than not he's simply there to be with her.

Still, Molly's place isn't quite home. And as he reaches the home stretch of renovating the flat, he finds himself impatient to know what it's like to have her in his space now that their relationship is... well, a relationship.

Also, he's made a significant change that he's eager for her to see.

You have the day off tomorrow.

Would you spend the night at Baker Street?

Molly's behaviour has also shifted slightly. When she's sad about Mary (or anything else) she doesn't try to stamp it down and hide it from him. They talk about it. They hold each other. They share the burden.

What she hasn't been able to talk to him about though are her fears about the two of them. She's still worried that when Baker Street is complete, this spell that's come over him will suddenly break and he'll go back to old patterns and behaviours. As Baker Street comes closer and closer to completion, her anxiety gets worse. She knows she should just talk to him about it but she doesn't want to insult him either. Aside from some mis-steps here and there and one all out row they had one day, he's overall been surprisingly good at being in a relationship.

So when she gets the text from him about Baker Street, she feels both excited he's asking her over and nervous about the long-term implications of Sherlock going home.

He knows something's been worrying her, and that needles at him, though he can't find a way to lead in to it the way he can when they talk about Mary. (And come to think of it, his poor skills at leading into most other emotional subjects was probably what set off that fight in the first place. Sherlock's still a touch sore with shame over that, even if the makeup sex was one of the few experiences he's had that he could legitimately call mindblowing.)

His understanding of how this thing between them has been evolving over time has itself gained depth and complexity. Even if many of his emotional responses are still cut with fear or anxiety, with the terrors of making himself vulnerable for another human being, he has learned a handful of ways to express himself. Those are the tools he uses to try and close the chasm between himself and the rest of the world--or at least the parts of the world that matter most to him.

She won't tell him what's making her nervous, and he has no idea how to ask. But he does know how to demonstrate that she means something to him.

Mostly; further improvements are largely cosmetic at this point. I've even got a new skull, though it needs a name.

Molly actually feels partially responsible for the fight they'd had. She was being overly sensitive that day and felt like she'd made too big a deal out of what he'd said. But opening up new emotions to each other and spending an awful lot of time together, came with more possibility that things like that would happen. What mattered is that they could move beyond it together, which they had. He wasn't wrong about the makeup sex.

Six PM should be ideal. Mrs. H has Rosie for the night and John's out with Stamford.

Funny, I actually haven't confirmed whether it's a male or female skull. We could always do facial reconstruction over dinner. Or breakfast. Depending on where the evening takes us.

The more time he spends around her, having to adjust to her in his space, the more comfortable it is. He can still get badly overstimulated at times, but she knows him well enough that she can tell when his nerves are jangling--and she's good at calming him, ninety-seven percent of the time.

And the fact that they've already had a fight and instead of ruining everything it's made them both a little more secure with one another... well, it's made him slightly more confident about opening up further, just as it has with the handful of other vital people in his life.

Alright. I'll have to go home and pack a bag but I'll be over after that. Do you want me to pick us something up for dinner on my way or do you have that sorted?

Molly is actually of the mind that if there is no fighting or disagreeing in a relationship that something is wrong. Either people are holding in their feelings or people aren't present in the relationship. Disagreements are normal and to a certain extent healthy as long as they are dealt with in a product I've way.
punchmeitssubtext: (Not bad.)

[personal profile] punchmeitssubtext 2017-04-15 03:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Sherlock's simply relieved that his missteps haven't resulted in everything collapsing. For a long, long time--since Victor's disappearance, since the holes in his memory left by Eurus, since Mycroft began to pull away from him and become a cold guardian rather than a beloved brother--he's had a very deeply seated fear that everyone precious to him will leave him somehow. That fear has clawed at him for much of the past year, and though Molly may not know it, their relationship has been helping to treat those wounds.

To: Molly
From: Sherlock

I'll pay for dinner if you pick it up. Dessert is sorted, though.

Then something occurs to him, and he grins slowly as he types out another text.

And don't worry about changing or showering. You can do both when you arrive.
theonewhocounted: (hopeful)

[personal profile] theonewhocounted 2017-04-15 06:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Sherlock has already, as expected, picked up on all of Molly's patterns and habits, including the fact that as soon as work is over she goes home to shower and change before she does anything else. She just assumes that the smell of death clings to her and she's self-conscious about smelling like a morgue.

What is a bit of surprise to her though is him suggesting she do those things at Baker Street. Either he's wanting to show off his new bathroom or he's impatient and doesn't want to wait for her to do those things at home. Maybe both. It doesn't make a difference to her though. Either way what he's saying is he wants her there in his space and she can't be anything but pleased about that.

Surprise me.

See you at six, then.

Which gives him just enough time to run out and pick up her brand of shampoo, as well as a handful of other things for the evening (including the aforementioned dessert, since he meant that only partly as an innuendo).

He's not really one for candles or rose petals or grandly romantic gestures--at least, not the standard kind--and it's a bit too warm, in his opinion, for a fire in the fireplace. But he does put out the Stradivarius (even though it was a gift from Eurus he's finding it easier all the time to compose on it without thinking of her), and he uses the new skull as the centerpiece on the kitchen table. And though he knows Molly won't be repulsed by it, the way some of John's long-ago girlfriends were, he decides something's missing. That something being a black pocket square he never wears (likely one his brother snuck into his new wardrobe) folded into an origami pirate hat for the skull.

He's almost certain it'll make her smile, and as his day winds towards six o'clock he's increasingly curious to know whether he's right.

Molly gets out of work around 5 and heads home just to pack a bag and put in her takeaway order at the Mediterranean place near Baker Street that she knows he likes. She's not sure what to expect when she gets to his flat. Sherlock's not let her near the place during renovations so she has no idea if it'll still be recognizable or if he'll have decided to change some things.

It's weird to think that she hasn't set foot there since before this all started.

A little after six, she's ringing the buzzer for 221B, the bag of takeaway in hand and her overnight bag slung over a shoulder. She feels nervous like she hasn't with Sherlock in a while. It feels like unchartered territory.
punchmeitssubtext: (Sincerely.)

[personal profile] punchmeitssubtext 2017-04-17 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
He spends the seventeen minutes immediately before six (and the nine minutes after that) pacing restlessly between the windows and the door of his flat. Is this what it would have been like, to go on actual dates as a teenager? Scampering back and forth to see if the girl he likes is coming up the walk yet? Probably. It's ridiculous, he knows, but he can't help himself.

When the buzzer finally goes off, he nearly springs for the door--and the sight of Molly, fidgety and obviously (to him, at least) self-conscious about not having had time to go through her usual post-work ritual, sweeps his own anxiety about tonight to one side.

He smiles down at her.

"Hey." Next he notices the food, which stretches his smile even wider. "Oh--perfect, you went to the place with the good potatoes. Come in, come in."

If Molly knew how Sherlock were acting while he was waiting for her, she would feel immensely better. As it is, just seeing him on the other side of the door makes her feel better, some of her anxiety dissipating with his familiar, heart-skip inducing smile.

"Hi," she says and smiles back before he ushers her in. "I thought I recalled you enjoying this place and I felt like shwarma and babaganoush myself. I probably ordered way too much but, besides the potatoes, I wasn't sure what you would want."

She's chattering a bit nervously she realizes and stops herself. She's getting better at that. Kind of. She doesn't even know why she's nervous. It's just Sherlock.

Though he's been aware for a long time that she's physically attracted to him, Sherlock is only now starting to understand the emotional effect he has on her. He's conscious that she can become anxious over whether she's saying or doing the right things--an anxiety he shares, and thus finds a reassuring point of connection between them. And now that he knows they have this specific awkwardness in common, he's... well, he's more inclined to reach out, even when he's uncertain himself.

"You recalled correctly," he says, "and you can look at it as having ordered enough to cover lunch tomorrow."

He doesn't give her time to respond to that before bending to kiss her--a too-long-delayed kiss hello, warm and quick.
theonewhocounted: (knowing smile)

[personal profile] theonewhocounted 2017-04-17 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
If seeing his smile calms her nerves a bit, the kiss hello lifts a weight off of her. When it's over, she smiles up at him. This is Sherlock and he's back at Baker Street and he's still kissing her hello.

"So am I going to get a tour of the new and improved 221B?" she asks him, curious as to what lay upstairs.
punchmeitssubtext: (Not bad.)

[personal profile] punchmeitssubtext 2017-04-17 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
"Absolutely. First, though, and this is important--did you want to get the shower out of the way before or after dinner and the rest of the tour?"

He steps back, though not far from her, his fingers sliding down her arm to trace over her wrist and then curl around her hand.

"Honestly, I'm dying for a shower," she admits as her hand curls around his in return and even more tension leaves her body. "I had three post-mortems today and I feel like I must smell like them all."

Her nose wrinkles. She knows that she probably doesn't smell as bad as she thinks she does and she knows that, so far, Sherlock has never said anything about it. It still makes her feel self-conscious.

[personal profile] punchmeitssubtext 2017-04-17 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
"Not in a way the average person would recognize as such," he says, and to his credit he's trying to be helpful. But his smile grows slightly lopsided, and he squeezes her hand. "I was actually hoping I could show you the bathroom first."

It's not enormous--yes, 221B is a pretty big flat for central London, but it's not bigger on the inside or anything--but during the renovations he's deviated from the floor plan a bit. Only in the bathroom, though, and only enough so that there's both a shower and a respectably-sized bathtub in there now. (Which isn't really long enough for Sherlock to stretch out in, but is deep enough that even if he's not sprawled out he can still get a good soak going, instead of just being curled up in some shallow water like he's trying to have a bath in a soup bowl.)
theonewhocounted: (adorbs)

[personal profile] theonewhocounted 2017-04-17 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
"That's...somewhat reassuring," she says with a smile. As long as people couldn't take a whiff and know that she hangs out with dead people all day.

"Well, now I definitely need to see this bathroom. Lead the way, Mr. Holmes."

She grins at him and squeezes his hand back. If he's that eager to show her the bathroom then it must be he's done something special or interesting in there that he's excited to share with her.
punchmeitssubtext: (Not bad.)

[personal profile] punchmeitssubtext 2017-04-17 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
His smile blooms into an all-out grin, and he nearly tugs her forward, pleased that he's able to show off so early in the evening.

Their brief detour into the kitchen, to put down the takeaway bag, reveals that for the most part the new and improved Baker Street just looks... a bit tidier. Largely because certain things have to be kept well out of reach of a curious little girl who's fast approaching being able to crawl.

Somehow, though, the place also looks brighter. As if there's been some subtle change in the lighting or the windows, to chase away more of the shadows. But that could arguably be due to the changes in its residents rather than any actual rearranging.

"So," he says at the door of the bathroom, looking quite pleased with himself, "you have some choices here. You could take a shower, or I could run you a bath. And either way, you have the option of help washing your hair."

He's been curious to know what that would be like. Wet or dry, he likes her hair, and he's never gotten genuinely close enough to another human being to do something that personal.

Molly blinks as they enter the flat and he pulls her along into the kitchen. It looks...surprisingly the same. Shockingly so. She wants to ask how he'd possibly been able to have the contractor recreate it so well, but he's ferrying her to the bathroom, which does, in fact, look different. Like the rest of the flat it seems brighter. There's new, more modern tile and fixtures, but the most obvious difference is the big soaking tub next to the shower stall.

"Oh," she says when she eyes the tub. The one in her flat is alright in size, but even her petite frame struggles to stay as submerged as she likes. This one looks like she could tread water in it. "Definitely the bath I think. I haven't had a good bath in ages. Will you join me?"

She looks over at him. It's not really what he's offered and it's not something they've done before, but the sight of that big tub makes her picture them both in it together and she very much likes that picture.

He blinks, and a startled little laugh huffs out of him--he's been hoping she might invite him in partway through, or that they could try it some other night, but instead she's a step ahead of him. Casually surprising him, the way almost no one else can.

This is, he realizes, sentiment getting the better of him. But he is, at this point in his life, well and truly sick of the time-and-energy-consuming effort it's taken him to insist that he's not affected by anything.

"You know, I think I will."

[personal profile] theonewhocounted 2017-04-17 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
"Sorry, was that forward of me?" she asks with a smile when he laughs and looks surprised by the invite. They have been sleeping together for months now, so she doesn't think so, but this is Sherlock and all of this is new to him. She doesn't want to push where he might be uncomfortable and bathing together is rather intimate in a way not even sex can be. It's domestically and personally intimate - a ritual that most people do alone most of the time.

Her smile widens when he agrees to her offer. In fact, she is beaming. Not only will she be bathing at Baker Street but she will be bathing with him at Baker Street. Some of her anxieties about the place are quelled for now.

"Great," she says and kisses his cheek before she sets her overnight bag down just inside the bathroom.
