A jaguar.

[ He says it again, a little slower. ]

If that’s how you want to put it, then sure.

[ The idea that the jaguar is just some thing, some separate entity from himself is completely alien to him. But perhaps that just echoes how Faraday feels about his wolf. Faraday didn’t ask to be what he was, and Vasquez was born this way. They’re coming at this from different sides. ]

Well— [ Another mouthful of whiskey, and it numbs and burns a line down his throat as he passes it back. He sighs as the sensation passes before continuing on. ] —is there any other way to put it?

[ Because as far as Faraday is aware, that’s how it is. One second, Vasquez, another second, that cat. The jaguar, as Vasquez calls it.

And it is Faraday’s bias at play, because for him, he and the beast he turns into are night and day. A smart, cheeky son of a bitch most of the time, and a mindless killing machine under the light of a full moon. The wolf is something that looks through him, lives in him, but isn’t him.

It’s hard to conceive of much else. ]

It’s what I am.

[ He makes a vague motion with the bottle, trying to find a better way to describe it. It’s like trying to describe why red is red; it just is, and putting it into words is proving difficult. ]

It’s not like there’s me and the jaguar with a clear line down the middle. I don’t keep my mind when I change by shoving the jaguar out of the way. There’s only me.

[ The twist of his mouth, the furrowing of his brow, signal that while Faraday hears Vasquez, he can’t quiet grasp it. Seems to him it should just be they and them. The men and the monsters. And maybe that’s another marker of difference between them, that Faraday needs to put distance between himself and the creature he turns into; but who he is and what he becomes are two very different entities.

(Or maybe that’s just what Faraday needs to believe.)

At length, Faraday just shrugs. ]

Just you, then.

[ Lightly, most of his usual levity having returned. He picks up a pebble next to his hip, tosses it into the creek. ]

You, as a big kitten.

[ Perhaps one day he’ll find the words to better describe how it feels, to be one soul spanning two different worlds. To be just as much man as he is animal whether he walks on two feet or four.

But for now he’ll just take Faraday’s jests in stride, letting out an amused snort. ]

You’re one to talk, perrito. I bet if I threw a stick, you would chase it.

[ Exasperated, ] Don’t call me that.

[ Well, that little resolution didn’t last long, did it?

A bit of a pause, then, ]

What’s that mean, anyway? Scary? Intimidating?

[ A soft laugh. ]

Something like that.

[ And he takes another drink from the bottle before finally passing it back. It’s good to get the taste of the damn vampire out of his mouth. The list of undead things Vasquez has run across in his life has been very short, but each and every one of them had proven to be an unpleasant experience. ]

[ He snorts out a laugh despite himself. Vasquez is a difficult bastard at the best of times, but he’s not so bad, Faraday supposes. At least they have some sort of understanding between them, even if what they do and what they are aren’t quite the same.

Faraday doesn’t immediately take a drink from the bottle, but he accepts it all the same, rolling it between his hands, letting the liquid slosh with the movement. ]

You gonna stay out here, startin’ tonight?

[personal profile] lawbreakers 2017-02-23 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
I think so.

[ He lays back into the grass as he says it, crossing his arms behind his head. ]

What about you?

[personal profile] peacemakers 2017-02-23 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
Dunno.

[ He takes a quick swig of the liquor, looking out at the slowly winding creek, watching the moonlight collect on its surface. ]

Hadn't thought about it.

Might make 'em nervous, though. [ And he gestures back to the town with a wave of his hand. ] Not havin' the two of us within easy sight.

You think so?

[ He raises his head slightly, tilting the brim of his hat up with a finger to get a better look at Faraday. ]

I would think the opposite.
peacemakers: (091)

[personal profile] peacemakers 2017-02-23 04:01 am (UTC)(link)
[ The tiny shift of movement is enough to draw Faraday's attention, and he arches an eyebrow at him. ]

I think you're lookin' at it wrong.

[ He turns back toward the creek, depositing the bottle in the space between them. ]

Say you've got bears prowlin' around your home, makin' themselves comfortable. Wanderin' away, driftin' back. Liable to break your neck with a swipe or tear your throat out if you aren't careful with 'em.

Wouldn't you rather know where they all are?
lawbreakers: (068)

[personal profile] lawbreakers 2017-02-23 07:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Most people would want the bears gone, perrito.

[ Matter-of-factly, as he props himself up on an elbow. ]

Besides, they know where we are. Sam knows. He would have left someone out here with us if he thought we were going to run or go on a rampage.
peacemakers: (038)

[personal profile] peacemakers 2017-02-23 07:35 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Silently, Faraday concedes that Vasquez might have a point. Sam is a damn good hunter, but for the most part, he's never made Faraday feel like a monster, never made him feel hunted. And part of him thinks that if he really meant to leave, Sam would let him go.

It's an odd feeling, Faraday thinks, for someone to actually trust him. To see past his skin to the ugly thing inside him and still treat him as an equal.

This whole damn place is backwards, he thinks. ]

... Might stay out here, then. [ Slowly, still working the idea over in his head. ] So long as there aren't anymore half-dead vampires lurkin' around.

And so long as you don't piss me off too bad.
lawbreakers: (019)

[personal profile] lawbreakers 2017-02-23 07:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Can’t make any promises one way or another, perrito. We’re out here to keep watch, remember?

[ He hasn’t heard or smelled anything that suggests more vampires, so at least there’s that. As to whether or not he pisses Faraday off, well… he’s kind of made a habit of pissing Faraday off. ]
peacemakers: (012)

[personal profile] peacemakers 2017-02-23 08:02 pm (UTC)(link)
[ He hums in agreement, leaning back on his hands and tilting his face up to the sky. ]

Well, considerin' what we can control – how 'bout you do us both a favor and try and keep quiet?

You're gonna spoil what a pleasant evening it is, otherwise.
lawbreakers: (125)

[personal profile] lawbreakers 2017-02-23 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
[ He chuckles. ]

You’re the one who keeps making conversation, here.

[ In reality, it’s likely six of one, half a dozen of the other, but there was no denying that Faraday liked to hear himself talk. Vasquez, on the other hand, was making up for a whole lot of solitude, going days without breathing a word to another soul, now that he finally had someone worth talking to.

But moments of silence do happen, and he lets one settle now as he watches Faraday, face turned up to the moon, basking in its light. It’s a good look, he thinks, Faraday stretches out and illuminated by the night. He wonders if he'll get more chances to see it. ]
