[There was a time not all that long ago when Steve avoided downtime like the plague. He hadn't wanted to stop moving, to have time to think about where he'd come from or where he was going, so he hadn't if he could avoid it. But nowadays he could admit, it was nice getting to spend time with Natasha, which most people didn't seem to realize was different from being around Agent Romanoff or Black Widow, even after the Earth was saved and the dust settled... They were alike in that way; nobody really took the time to get to know the person behind the persona.

But Natasha did. She'd been one of the first to see that there was more than meets the eye and she'd looked deeper than anyone, probably figured out more about Steve than he'd ever want to let on, but the thing of it was she'd been smart about it, and kind, and had eased him into it over and over... There was a time he wouldn't have thought he could lay under the covers with a woman at his side and not work himself into a panic yet here he was, at ease, letting her into the loop of his arms so he didn't have to let go of the thick, leather-bound book he held in both hands.

If Falsworth could only hear him now... He keeps on with it until he finishes the excerpt, then:]

"-I can feel you laughing at me."

[ And that avoidance of downtime was something she also understood. Mostly she still had Barton to thank for forcing her to learn how to enjoy it once she'd settled at SHIELD. The man had invited her into his family and his way of life. She might not have been the most adept at farmhouse living but she grew to enjoy the escape it became when she really needed it.

But now the farmhouse was more a person. Steve - when he was Steve - and not Rogers, or Cap, or Captain America, was that escape now. She moved enough to be able to look up at his face, chin resting on the back of his hand as she kept it on his chest.

Her eyebrow arched in quiet challenge as if to question the fact that he even dared to suggest such a thing. But the laughter was evident in her eyes and the quirk of her mouth. ]

"It's not really at you. More just the image of Captain America in all his glory and then that accent coming out when the embodiment of patriotism opened his mouth. I was enjoying it."

[Steve could see that her efforts to slow him down were attempts to do for him what Barton had done for her - to pay it forward - as much as they were for herself; and that right there was a large part of the reason he was able to give in to her in the first place. He would do damn near anything if it was for somebody else's sake, especially somebody he cared about.

And over the years he'd come to care about her an awful lot. Enough to, say, put up with her chin lightly jabbing into the back of his hand. He glanced down his chest at her, clearly aiming to look unimpressed but missing it by about a mile; it was hard to play at being putout when she looked at him like that. And it's hardly the worst thing he's been teased for anyway.]

"Uh huh, that's what they all say. And d'you know what they say about people with overactive imaginations?"

"That we're amazing and you should cherish us?"

[ Natasha's smile grew as she held his gaze for a moment longer before shifting to press a kiss to the back of his hand where her chin had been. She had grown to care about Steve a lot over the years as well. It had been hard not to. And while she tried to do the little things that showed him that, doing something like this - paying it forward - was probably one of the better things she could give him.

Even the almighty super soldier had to stop every once in a while. There weren't always punching bags to plow through while they were on the run and it wasn't always wise to go running in public. So she showed him other ways. ]

"I don't think I've ever actually been accused of having an overactive imagination before, though. Another first with you, Steve."
