[ Faraday huffs out a laugh, cants his head up a little and offers Vasquez a sharp smile. ]

You say that like we don’t scare everyone already.

[ But he shrugs, all the same, hauls himself to his feet and brushes dirt from his clothing. ]

Suppose if you need me for anything, I’ll be dunkin’ myself in the creek.

[ He laughs a little, a dangerous edge to his own grin. It’s freeing, he realizes, to be able to be what he is with someone else. The both of them are monsters, wild beasts, but if they want to survive in this world, they have to bury that part deep. Keep it hidden so that normal folks don’t run screaming or try to gun them down where they stand.

With Faraday, he can be animal or man or anything in between and it doesn’t matter at all. ]

I suppose we do.

[ He gives Faraday a dismissive wave, and turns back towards town.

Thankfully, he doesn’t have to go far. Sam and Goodnight and Billy were already on their way to the outskirts of town, drawn by the gunfire. He points them in the direction of the vampire’s corpse, lets them know that Faraday is fine, if covered in vampire guts. He then saunters back into town for a bit.

A short while later, he reappears alongside the creek, a bottle of whiskey in hand, following the lingering stink of old blood and the unmistakable scent of Faraday, stuck somewhere between man and wolf. ]

Sam is going to take the others out tomorrow to see if there are others lurking around the town. I told him we would keep an eye out here for the rest of the night.

[ As Vasquez wanders off, Faraday makes his way to the banks of the creek that gives the town its name. He tosses his hat aside, strips down, and—

Well. He dunks himself in.

He wasn’t quite joking when he had said that to Vasquez, apparently.

With the warmth of the evening air, the water is blessedly, sharply cool against his skin. He scrubs off the blood – congealed and sticky and stale – and the dirt, rids his hands of the dead flesh that had worked under his fingernails when he grappled with the vampire. He climbs out, dripping wet, and shakes himself.

Not unlike a dog.

(And thank God Vasquez wasn’t here to witness that. Mouthy bastard as he is, Faraday can only imagine the comparisons he would draw.)

Faraday catches his scent on the air as he returns – the sharp smell of blood recently spilled. A familiar mix of smoke, gun oil, gun powder, liquor, and that strangeness that drifts from all inhuman creatures like themselves. By the time Vasquez finds him, Faraday’s back in his trousers and boots, kneeling at the banks of the creek and scrubbing the old blood from his clothing. His gun belt sits within easy reach. Without his shirt, the old scar sits in plain view: a ring of red tissue, wrapping around his left side.

He peers up as Vasquez as he steps up beside him, frowns at him. ]

I don’t recall volunteering for that.

[ He watches Faraday a moment, eyes immediately going to the angry red mark at his side. Not hard to pick it out as a bite mark, and it’s not hard to know what that means.

He doesn’t dwell on it at the moment. Maybe one day he’ll get the story of how he was turned out of Faraday, but it doesn’t seem wise to ask this close to the full moon. ]

You didn’t. I did it for you.

[ And he holds up the bottle. ]

But I brought some incentive.

[personal profile] peacemakers 2017-02-21 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Faraday continues to look unimpressed, even as Vasquez produces the bottle, lips pressed together in a thin line and the corners of his mouth turned downward.

Smug son of a bitch.

At last, Faraday nods sharply to the space beside him, apparently resigned to his fate. He hardly wants to crane his neck to stare up at Vasquez for the rest of the night.

He wrings out his shirt slowly, the water finally falling away cleanly, and he shakes it out a couple times before slipping it back on. The blood stain is still there, but it’s faint, at least. And the scent still lingers, but he expects no one but him – and Vasquez, likely – will even notice. His vest comes next, and he plunges it into the cool waters of the creek. ]

You get your arm seen to?

Si. Señora Cullen insisted.

[ Emma was one of the few who didn't tend to keep Faraday or Vasquez at arm's length just because of what they were. It was a rarity, to be sure. ]

Got a handful of bullets from the preacher, too.
peacemakers: (088)

[personal profile] peacemakers 2017-02-22 03:43 am (UTC)(link)
[ He offers a quiet hum. Emma Cullen is an odd one, to be sure. Not many God-fearing women like her would be comfortable inviting an assortment of eccentricities like Chisolm's band. Not many would be comfortable inviting a hunter, either; men like that had a certain air about them that made them just as terrifying as the creatures they pursued.

Chisolm was an odd one, too. A damn good hunter, to pick out Faraday from the crowd and read what he was – and not give a damn, either. Not many hunters would see a wolf and leave him alone. But Chisolm had, and only returned for him when Emma Cullen crossed his path.

Hell, Faraday thinks, wringing out his vest. Everyone in this damn place is odd, and Faraday might very well be king of it. He slips the damp vest back on, lets it hang loose and open from his shoulders.

He extends a hand out. ]

Give 'em here, then. I expect I need 'em more than you do.

[ It's only a handful, but it should be enough, given that Faraday is a damn good shot. He fishes them from his pocket and hands them over. ]

Things like that don't bother you?
peacemakers: (050)

[personal profile] peacemakers 2017-02-22 04:17 am (UTC)(link)
[ The bullets fall harmlessly into Faraday's palm, and he gives them a demonstrative little jiggle. ]

Don't bother you either, does it?

[ Regular lead, consecrated by the word of a holy man; churches; holy ground – none of that bothers Faraday. ]
lawbreakers: (063)

[personal profile] lawbreakers 2017-02-22 04:39 am (UTC)(link)
I don't tend to keep things that bother me in my pocket.

[ And the divine doesn't bother him at all. He was raised Catholic, in fact, and never once has he had the feeling that the word of God would cause him to burst into flame or other such nonsense. ]

That vampire tried to take a bite out of you. Didn't seem like it worked much.

So if blessings don't bother you and vampires don't bother you, what does?

[ Faraday pulls out his spent gun, loading the blessed cartridges into the chambers.

He hums quietly as Vasquez speaks, trying to puzzle out what might literally get beneath Faraday's skin, and he only offers a sharp-toothed smile. ]

Why do you wanna know?

[ Challenging, warning. The cylinder of his Peacemaker clicks as he reveals the next spent chamber, sliding in a bullet. ]

Not plannin' on takin' advantage of that knowledge, are you?
lawbreakers: (033)

[personal profile] lawbreakers 2017-02-22 05:01 am (UTC)(link)
Got no reason to want to kill you, perrito.

[ Hopefully he won't have one three nights from now, either, but even if they try to steer Faraday in the right direction, there's still a chance that things could go wrong. ]

And you already have what it takes to kill me.
peacemakers: (006)

[personal profile] peacemakers 2017-02-22 05:33 am (UTC)(link)
[ He watches Vasquez from the corner of his eye, sliding in the last cartridge. That done, he slips the gun into its holster, reaching to load up his second gun.

It's practical knowledge, Faraday supposes. Vasquez pulled the short straw as far as responsibilities go, come the night of the fight. Sam had appointed Vasquez as Faraday's warden. Faraday figures the scent of something a little familiar to himself might keep the wolf calm, and Chisolm apparently came to the same conclusion. Better than any of the farmers around here, at least. The wolf would just catch their scent and try to break out in search of food.

So it's Vasquez's job to haul him to the shed just before sunset, to lock him in, to wait with him as he changes. And once night finally falls and the moon rises overhead, it's Vasquez's job to make sure the wolf doesn't get out too soon. And when the time comes, it's Vasquez's job to let him out, to let the wolf do what he does best.

(As far as Faraday knows, Sam hasn't quite decided what they'll do with him if the fight ends too soon before sunrise.

Faraday suspects they haven't thought that far, because no one expects to actually win.)

It'll be valuable for him to know what to do, Faraday decides, when things inevitably go to hell. ]

... Silver. Wolfsbane.

[ He says it quietly, slowly, as he unloads Maria. He doesn't have enough bullets to fully load both guns, but a couple in his off-hand pistol is better than nothing. ]

Sam's got both. I suspect he'll set you up with a few silver bullets before he ships you off with me. Just in case.
lawbreakers: (090)

[personal profile] lawbreakers 2017-02-22 04:42 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Silver and wolfsbane. (The latter is some sort of herb, if he remembers right. That explains the peculiar name.)

Vasquez only nods slowly. He truly hopes it doesn’t come to that- he likes Faraday, obnoxious as he could be sometimes. There’s a certain freedom about walking by his side, the easy way they talk to and goad one another, the easy way they fall into silence.

Sam can give him his silver bullets, if he likes, but he’s going to do his damnedest to not have to use them. ]

Let’s hope we don’t have to worry about “just in case”, eh?
peacemakers: (067)

[personal profile] peacemakers 2017-02-22 06:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Hope don’t do you much good when I’m tearin’ your throat out.

[ There’s something chipper in his tone as he says it. ]

I’m not gonna be on your side. I am now, but once the wolf’s out? All bets are off.

I ain’t like you, Vasquez. I don’t get to keep my head when I change. I’ve never been around so many folks during a full moon, but it’s easy enough to guess how I’m gonna react: everyone is gonna look the same to me, and they’re all gonna look like food.

[ He spins the cylinder of his gun, slips it back into its proper holster. ]

Sam’ll give you the bullets. Wouldn’t be surprised if he sets up the rest of the boys with a couple, too. So he’s trustin’ you to watch me, trustin’ that you’ll do what you can to guide me in the right direction, and trustin’ you to use your judgment.

[ And Faraday lifts up his head, catching Vasquez’s gaze; his eyes flash yellow in the moonlight. ]

And if worst comes to worst, I’m trustin’ you to stop me.

Comprende, amigo?
lawbreakers: (041)

[personal profile] lawbreakers 2017-02-22 06:40 pm (UTC)(link)
[ It still doesn’t sit right with him, having to put Faraday down like some wild animal, even if that’s what he becomes. But, in the end, if it comes down to Faraday or the lives of the people they’re trying to help in the first place, he really ought to make the right decision. ]

Si, perrito. I understand.

[ They hold each other’s gaze a moment, but Vasquez breaks away first with a small laugh. He sets the bottle between them and leans back a bit, supporting his weight on his hands. ]

You’re a scary man, you know that?
peacemakers: (009)

[personal profile] peacemakers 2017-02-22 06:49 pm (UTC)(link)
[ It’s a bit of a weight off his shoulders when Vasquez relents. (Even if he uses that goddamn nickname again, and starting now, Faraday is trying not to let it show just how obnoxious he finds it.) It’s easier coming to turns with his own role in the fight, so long as there are fallback measures in place.

And he knows everyone of Chisolm’s handpicked army is a damn fine shot.

When Vasquez laughs, Faraday feels some of the stiffness bleed out of his posture. He reaches over to the bottle sitting between them, pulling out the cork and taking a swig. ]

Rich, comin’ from a man who can turn into some kinda giant cat when he pleases.

[ He holds the bottle out to Vasquez. ]

We’re all scary bastards.
lawbreakers: (074)

[personal profile] lawbreakers 2017-02-22 06:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn’t say I wasn’t scary.

[ He’s well-aware of how unsettling he can be when little glimpses of the animal drift to the surface. Feral smiles and sharp eyes and moving in a way just on the wrong side of the line between human and inhuman.

He takes the offered bottle, downing a drink for himself before passing it back. ]

Jaguar, by the way. That’s what I am.
peacemakers: (096)

[personal profile] peacemakers 2017-02-22 07:12 pm (UTC)(link)
A what?

[ This, as Faraday’s taking the bottle back. The name sits at the back of his head, something both familiar and not. Likely he’s heard the word before, but he’s had nothing to attach it to.

Well, until now, that is. ]

The thing you turn into, you mean?
lawbreakers: (150)

[personal profile] lawbreakers 2017-02-22 07:20 pm (UTC)(link)
A jaguar.

[ He says it again, a little slower. ]

If that’s how you want to put it, then sure.

[ The idea that the jaguar is just some thing, some separate entity from himself is completely alien to him. But perhaps that just echoes how Faraday feels about his wolf. Faraday didn’t ask to be what he was, and Vasquez was born this way. They’re coming at this from different sides. ]
peacemakers: (046)

[personal profile] peacemakers 2017-02-22 07:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Well— [ Another mouthful of whiskey, and it numbs and burns a line down his throat as he passes it back. He sighs as the sensation passes before continuing on. ] —is there any other way to put it?

[ Because as far as Faraday is aware, that’s how it is. One second, Vasquez, another second, that cat. The jaguar, as Vasquez calls it.

And it is Faraday’s bias at play, because for him, he and the beast he turns into are night and day. A smart, cheeky son of a bitch most of the time, and a mindless killing machine under the light of a full moon. The wolf is something that looks through him, lives in him, but isn’t him.

It’s hard to conceive of much else. ]
lawbreakers: (019)

[personal profile] lawbreakers 2017-02-22 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
It’s what I am.

[ He makes a vague motion with the bottle, trying to find a better way to describe it. It’s like trying to describe why red is red; it just is, and putting it into words is proving difficult. ]

It’s not like there’s me and the jaguar with a clear line down the middle. I don’t keep my mind when I change by shoving the jaguar out of the way. There’s only me.
peacemakers: (003)

[personal profile] peacemakers 2017-02-22 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
[ The twist of his mouth, the furrowing of his brow, signal that while Faraday hears Vasquez, he can’t quiet grasp it. Seems to him it should just be they and them. The men and the monsters. And maybe that’s another marker of difference between them, that Faraday needs to put distance between himself and the creature he turns into; but who he is and what he becomes are two very different entities.

(Or maybe that’s just what Faraday needs to believe.)

At length, Faraday just shrugs. ]

Just you, then.

[ Lightly, most of his usual levity having returned. He picks up a pebble next to his hip, tosses it into the creek. ]

You, as a big kitten.
lawbreakers: (084)

[personal profile] lawbreakers 2017-02-22 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Perhaps one day he’ll find the words to better describe how it feels, to be one soul spanning two different worlds. To be just as much man as he is animal whether he walks on two feet or four.

But for now he’ll just take Faraday’s jests in stride, letting out an amused snort. ]

You’re one to talk, perrito. I bet if I threw a stick, you would chase it.
peacemakers: (021)

[personal profile] peacemakers 2017-02-22 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Exasperated, ] Don’t call me that.

[ Well, that little resolution didn’t last long, did it?

A bit of a pause, then, ]

What’s that mean, anyway? Scary? Intimidating?
