And how likely am I to enjoy any sort of silence with you?

You think I talk too much? Have you ever listened to yourself?

[ He falls in step alongside Faraday easily enough, in spite of his words. The lights of the town can only hold off the darkness so much. The lamplight only provides a small halo of light into the fields, but it makes no difference to Vasquez. Being what he is, he can see in the dark just fine ]

I have. And I have a melodic voice.

[ Faraday sees by the light of the moon, guides himself by what the light traces, edges in soft whites and yellows. Not true night vision, exactly, but something close to it; and in the nights to come, his vision will only get better.

For now, his eyesight is improved enough to navigate through the fields, to avoid tripping over discarded tools or tangled, gnarled weeds. ]

What about you, then? [ This, slowly, lightly. ] Bein' around so many people. Can't imagine that's too common, for you. It bother you?
lawbreakers: (045)

[personal profile] lawbreakers 2017-02-21 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
[ "Melodic" is not the word he would have used, and it earns Faraday another roll of his eyes.

But the question catches him off-guard, a little more personal than he thought they were going to get in general, but it's far from bothersome. ]

Sometimes. Part of me likes it, it's been so long since I could talk with people. But part of me finds it oppressive.

[ A brief, thoughtful pause. ]

Too many wounded back there, too. The smell is distracting.

[personal profile] peacemakers 2017-02-21 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
[ Faraday isn't the type to back off from a topic just because it's too personal. When he's curious, then he asks questions – likely sticking his nose in where it's not wanted, but that's simply in his nature.

As is so often the case, though, Faraday expects a deflection, a dodge, a statement regarding where he can stick his questions. When he gets a straight answer for once, Faraday's eyebrows rise, and he peers over at the other man. ]

... I get that. [ This, slowly, carefully, like he's unsure if he wants to offer this little admission. ]

But you're always in control, aren't you? Even when you're— [ A vague little flick of his fingers. ] You know.
lawbreakers: (009)

[personal profile] lawbreakers 2017-02-21 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
I am.

[ Wolves not so much, in his limited experience. They became animals wholly unlike themselves, no consciousness, no control other than the instincts of a wild beast. ]

But I am still an animal. Just because I can stop myself from eating a man doesn't mean I don't want to do it in the first place.
peacemakers: (046)

[personal profile] peacemakers 2017-02-21 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
[ That catches his interest, and he turns his full gaze on Vasquez. ]

... Didn't realize you were like that.

[ Though he probably should have figured it out from the start. To turn into a creature like that, to keep your mind and knowingly tear a man to shreds, to taste his blood on your tongue—

It takes a certain mindset, Faraday supposes.

He's never met a— whatever the hell Vasquez is. A nagual? Faraday's heard stories – he hears quite a few stories, thanks to his travels – but never anything solid. Never anything as easy to come by as gruesome tales of vampires or other wolves, like himself. ]

Then why are you stayin' in the town?
lawbreakers: (071)

[personal profile] lawbreakers 2017-02-21 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
[ Naguals typically don't make it this far into the States, but he met a few back home. The abuela from his village, and some others. Some good, some evil.

Wolves and vampires really only came to his attention after leaving Mexico. There had been some, but the land here seems to be swarming with them by comparison. ]

Scratching an itch, maybe, but I've about hit my limit.

[personal profile] peacemakers 2017-02-21 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
[ Faraday offers a quiet hum in response to that, the quiet whisper of the grasses around their legs standing in place of conversation. Eventually, ]

So, where's that leave you? Gonna join Horne out in the field? Set up a tent along with his?
lawbreakers: (014)

[personal profile] lawbreakers 2017-02-21 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
[ He's content to let the conversation fall into a lull for a bit. In spite of their earlier jabs about each other never shutting up, he slips into these little contemplative moments of silence surprisingly easily with Faraday.

The question, however, draws a laugh out of him. ]

And have him constantly praying at me? No thank you. I'll sleep where I please, under the stars. Won't be the first time.
peacemakers: (095)

[personal profile] peacemakers 2017-02-21 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
[ He snorts at that, amused.

Horne isn't too terrible, but like Vasquez, Faraday could do without the constant preaching, without the near obsessive insistence for saying grace before every meal. Faraday's half-convinced the man's got Bible verses tattooed onto the backs of his eyelids. ]

Ain't a bad idea. So long as you avoid the line of dynamite we've got buried out there.

It'd be one hell of a tragedy, blowin' yourself up like that.
lawbreakers: (004)

[personal profile] lawbreakers 2017-02-21 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
Your concern is touching, perrito.

[ The nickname comes out with a smirk as it usually does. He's got a good enough nose, day or night, to keep him clear of the explosives they have rigged all over the field, and he opens his mouth to say as much.

But something else moves through the grass, some distance away. It's fast, and Vasquez's gaze snaps in its direction, eyes suddenly flashing pale in the darkness. The breeze shifts, and the unmistakable scent of death drifts their way. ]

Seems we have company.
peacemakers: (090)

[personal profile] peacemakers 2017-02-21 03:46 am (UTC)(link)
Would you stop—

[ But he hears it more than sees it, that rustle of movement far to quick for it to be any natural thing, and Faraday straightens, draws his gun without a thought. On the dry breeze, he picks up the scent of clammy skin, dried blood in old veins.

Faraday pulls his second gun from its holster, twirls it to hold it properly. ]

One of Bogue's.

[ Hard to mistake it. The heavy suede of his coat, meant to protect him from the sunlight. The staleness of the blood in his veins; likely hasn't fed in several days – just about the time Sam and them returned to town, drove them all out. ]

You smell it too.

[ It's not really a question. He casts Faraday a quick glance, eyes bright, pale yellow like the light of the moon. ]

Keep me covered, yes?

[ Vasquez doesn't change like Faraday changes. There's no shifting of bones, painful contortion of limbs and muscle. His human form just sort of... melts away, drifting from one shape to the next like coils of smoke. It's quiet and soft and fluid, the way he shifts from man to beast.

The massive black cat sinks low in the grass, eyes shining and nose working as he follows that scent. The scent of days old blood and dead flesh. The vampire seems to be keeping its distance, and Vasquez doesn't know enough about the creatures to know if it can tell that he and Faraday are more than human. He has to move quickly and quietly, so he does.

The grass is tall enough to keep him more than hidden as he slinks along, moving to flank the vampire. It has no heartbeat, no pulse, nothing to tell Vasquez if it's nervous or not, so he just goes. He gets closer than he thought he would, close enough to see the man, pale and gaunt, when he hears the hammer of a gun click back.

Vasquez leaps.

Jaguars don't make their homes this far north. He would bet not a one of these men has ever seen one, or knows how they move. They are fast and powerful, and Vasquez is so much more than a normal jaguar.

The shot goes wide, stinging as it grazes his shoulder, and he brings his claws down over the vampire's chest. The man's flesh tears away from his bones, the wounds open and ragged and bloodless. It makes Vasquez snarl, frustrated and angry, and the vampire turns to run, inhumanly fast towards Faraday. ]

[personal profile] peacemakers 2017-02-21 04:53 am (UTC)(link)
[ Keep him covered, he says.

Faraday may feel more animal than man, these days, but he still expects Vasquez's senses are far better than his, for now. It may be a different story, two nights from now, and a different book entirely come three nights from now, but at this point, Faraday is letting himself be guided by his sense of smell, his sense of hearing, what the moonlight affords him in the dark.

But he watches as Vasquez changes – the shape of a man one second, feline the next (some sort of cat that Faraday's never seen before) – with hardly any fuss in between. (Envy rings sour in him for a second, as he watches Vasquez melt into the dark.) The whisper of grass is enough for Faraday to track Vasquez's movement, but he's not sure if the same could be said of the vampire. If he's a fledgling, Faraday knows his senses probably haven't developed enough. An older vampire, though, would hear Vasquez coming from a mile away.

Young one, he decides, when he hears Vasquez practically on top of him. But then he hears the click of a hammer, a shot ring out, and something in him freezes. It's only when he hears Vasquez snarl, claws raking across bones and flesh, that Faraday feels that tension uncoil, and he starts forward, cocking the hammers on his own guns.

Not that he has to travel very far, though, and once again, he hears it before he sees it. Smells it, too – old, torn flesh, like a vulture picking at a corpse. The vampire rushes at him, the grass hissing as it passes, the air rushing out of the creature's way.

Faraday fires, unloading his favored gun into the vampire, but—

This ammo hasn't been blessed yet.

Well, hell, he thinks, when his shots only stagger it, and the vampire's pale eyes flash in amusement, fangs glinting in the moonlight as it pounces. It slams into Faraday tackling him to the ground, the half-congealed blood from its open wounds soaking into Faraday's clothes. It pins Faraday down, sinks its teeth into Faraday's neck—

Or it tries to. Tries really hard to, and when it sits back up, stares down at Faraday in confusion, Faraday grins up at him. ]

Sorry, compadre. Picked the wrong prey tonight.

[ The moon catches in his eyes, turns them yellow, and the vampire tries to scramble off. Faraday brings his gun up – Maria, this time – and fires off a shot directly beneath his jaw. ]
lawbreakers: (007)

[personal profile] lawbreakers 2017-02-21 05:13 am (UTC)(link)
[ He's hot on the thing's heels, a dark blur in the moonlight, bolting through the grass. Faraday's bullets do little to slow the creature down. The vampire barrels into Faraday, and Vasquez worry flares hot in his belly. He redoubles his efforts, moving as fast as his legs will carry him.

But the scent of blood never reaches the air, aside from the stagnant mess spilling from the vampire's wound, old and unpleasant. The vampire reappears, head poking up over the grass, and it's head rocks back violently as Faraday puts a bullet through the underside of its jaw, the bullet making a messy exit from the top of its skull.

Holy water and daylight and bullets with divine blessings on them can stop a vampire for good, but lacking in any of those things, removing its head from its body is a good way to slow it down. The vampire is already struggling to put itself back together, having gone so long without feeding. Vasquez barrels into it from the side, knocking it free of Faraday and into the grass. It doesn't have much fight in it anymore, and it's an easy thing for Vasquez to clamp his jaws around the vampire's throat. Old blood and dead flesh flood his tongue, rancid and awful, but he holds tight, bone crunching under the pressure.

In one violent motion, he tears the vampire's head free from its neck, tossing it away with a shake of his head. ]

[ It's almost too quick for Faraday to register, the heavy weight sitting on his chest one second, an abrupt absence the next, and Faraday jerks his head over in time to watch Vasquez to bite down on the vampire's neck.

Faraday winces in sympathy; he had smelled the vampire, decay setting in after having gone so long without a meal. He can only imagine how it must taste.

He props himself onto his elbows, holstering his spent gun but keeping Maria in his grip. With his free hand, he feels along his neck, finds the scrapes where the vampire's fangs tried penetrating through to a vein. To the vampire, it probably felt like chomping down on a tree trunk, rather than actual flesh. Faraday's fingers come away bloody, but the wounds are superficial. Cuts, rather than punctures.

Werewolves tended to be hardy beasts – it's what made them so damn scary, even without the benefit of a full moon. A creature like that bounding toward you, yellow eyes glowing and white teeth flashing in the dark. Treating every bullet like the mildest of inconveniences—

It's little wonder why Sam found having a werewolf on their side was well worth the risk.

He pushes himself up the rest of the way, wiping ineffectually at the bloody mess of his front. He suspects it must've been like upturning a bucket of curdled milk, when the vampire had tackled him – the wounds had been little more than slashes, at first. Old, torn flesh. But once the vampire had given it a chance to, some of its blood had slopped out, like watered down jelly.

He grimaces down at himself, glances over at the creek. He'll have to dunk himself in before the stench gives him a headache. It takes a second before he scents something else on the air. Sweet. Coppery. That minor note of bitterness that marks it as different. (unpalatable.) ]

[ His ears flick back at the sound of Faraday’s voice, at the strange note of concern there. He huffs out a breath through his nose, though it’s impossible to tell if it’s amusement or an attempt to clear the stench of carrion from his nostrils. Possibly both.

He turns and pads back towards Faraday, shifting as he walks. On one step, a prowling cat, by the next a man with a sour expression on his face. He scrubs at his mouth with the back of his hand, turning to spit into the grass. ]

Undead bastard tastes like shit.

[ As if he needed to explain that. He glances at his shoulder, a thin line of blood runs down his arm, seeping into the fabric of his shirt. The wound stings a bit, but it doesn’t seem too terribly deep. ]

Just a graze, perrito. No need to get so worked up over it.
peacemakers: (021)

[personal profile] peacemakers 2017-02-21 05:42 pm (UTC)(link)
[ It makes his head ache a little to look at Vasquez when he does that, like his brain can’t quite make sense of the transformation. It’s nothing like when Faraday turns, he knows that for certain; his own change is never quite so smooth.

Faraday spots the graze when Vasquez examines it, can’t quite explain why something unclenches in his chest when he realizes it’s not much of a wound. ]

Quit callin’ me that.

[ His hat had fallen off in the scuffle, and he casts around briefly, scooping it up and brushing dirt from its brim.]

Oughta tell Sam about this. [ When the hat seems clean enough, he settles it atop his head. ] That might not be the last of the stragglers.

[ He ignores the protest, token as it has become at this point, and instead gives Faraday a once over. Most of that blood is too old to have come from Faraday, and it does a decent job of masking the smell of the fresh blood slowly leaking from the scrapes on the gambler’s neck.

It reaches Vasquez’s nose all the same, now that he’s not actively breathing in the smells of the vampire, but it doesn’t seem like enough blood to be worried about it. ]

Ought to, yes. Ought to wash yourself off, too. You reek.

I can fetch the hunter, he needs to take care of the body anyway. You’ll just scare everyone walking into town like that.

[ Faraday huffs out a laugh, cants his head up a little and offers Vasquez a sharp smile. ]

You say that like we don’t scare everyone already.

[ But he shrugs, all the same, hauls himself to his feet and brushes dirt from his clothing. ]

Suppose if you need me for anything, I’ll be dunkin’ myself in the creek.

[ He laughs a little, a dangerous edge to his own grin. It’s freeing, he realizes, to be able to be what he is with someone else. The both of them are monsters, wild beasts, but if they want to survive in this world, they have to bury that part deep. Keep it hidden so that normal folks don’t run screaming or try to gun them down where they stand.

With Faraday, he can be animal or man or anything in between and it doesn’t matter at all. ]

I suppose we do.

[ He gives Faraday a dismissive wave, and turns back towards town.

Thankfully, he doesn’t have to go far. Sam and Goodnight and Billy were already on their way to the outskirts of town, drawn by the gunfire. He points them in the direction of the vampire’s corpse, lets them know that Faraday is fine, if covered in vampire guts. He then saunters back into town for a bit.

A short while later, he reappears alongside the creek, a bottle of whiskey in hand, following the lingering stink of old blood and the unmistakable scent of Faraday, stuck somewhere between man and wolf. ]

Sam is going to take the others out tomorrow to see if there are others lurking around the town. I told him we would keep an eye out here for the rest of the night.

[ As Vasquez wanders off, Faraday makes his way to the banks of the creek that gives the town its name. He tosses his hat aside, strips down, and—

Well. He dunks himself in.

He wasn’t quite joking when he had said that to Vasquez, apparently.

With the warmth of the evening air, the water is blessedly, sharply cool against his skin. He scrubs off the blood – congealed and sticky and stale – and the dirt, rids his hands of the dead flesh that had worked under his fingernails when he grappled with the vampire. He climbs out, dripping wet, and shakes himself.

Not unlike a dog.

(And thank God Vasquez wasn’t here to witness that. Mouthy bastard as he is, Faraday can only imagine the comparisons he would draw.)

Faraday catches his scent on the air as he returns – the sharp smell of blood recently spilled. A familiar mix of smoke, gun oil, gun powder, liquor, and that strangeness that drifts from all inhuman creatures like themselves. By the time Vasquez finds him, Faraday’s back in his trousers and boots, kneeling at the banks of the creek and scrubbing the old blood from his clothing. His gun belt sits within easy reach. Without his shirt, the old scar sits in plain view: a ring of red tissue, wrapping around his left side.

He peers up as Vasquez as he steps up beside him, frowns at him. ]

I don’t recall volunteering for that.

[ He watches Faraday a moment, eyes immediately going to the angry red mark at his side. Not hard to pick it out as a bite mark, and it’s not hard to know what that means.

He doesn’t dwell on it at the moment. Maybe one day he’ll get the story of how he was turned out of Faraday, but it doesn’t seem wise to ask this close to the full moon. ]

You didn’t. I did it for you.

[ And he holds up the bottle. ]

But I brought some incentive.
peacemakers: (054)

[personal profile] peacemakers 2017-02-21 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Faraday continues to look unimpressed, even as Vasquez produces the bottle, lips pressed together in a thin line and the corners of his mouth turned downward.

Smug son of a bitch.

At last, Faraday nods sharply to the space beside him, apparently resigned to his fate. He hardly wants to crane his neck to stare up at Vasquez for the rest of the night.

He wrings out his shirt slowly, the water finally falling away cleanly, and he shakes it out a couple times before slipping it back on. The blood stain is still there, but it’s faint, at least. And the scent still lingers, but he expects no one but him – and Vasquez, likely – will even notice. His vest comes next, and he plunges it into the cool waters of the creek. ]
