Wait.

[ He clicks his second gun out of its holster at his hip, hefts in his hand for a second, as if thinking it over. It's only a split second of deliberation, though, because soon enough he holds it out to her, grip first. ]

Top trigger is electricity. Bottom is for fire.

Take it.

[ brae halts mid-step, watching closely as peter takes the second gun, and then—

—offers it to her.

she looks from the gun to his mask (because that sure is fucking helpful to know what's going on with his face), then back to the gun again. ]

Dude, you sure? I have mine, I'm good, seriously.

[ but damn if it isn't tempting. ]

[personal profile] nostalgiabomb 2017-02-18 08:47 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sure.

[ And there's a steadiness to his voice that speaks of certainty, and he keeps the gun held out to her. ]

If we're gonna keep running into more things like Cujo, over here— [ Punctuated by nudging at the creature with the toe of his boot, he remains limp and very dead and sizzling. ] —then bullets aren't gonna help very much.

[ Then, a little more insistently, ]

Take it. Okay?

[ another second of hesitation, and then brae nods, reaching out to take the blaster from peter. ]

'kay.

[ and there's gratitude in brae's expression, something warmer in her smile, because fuck, she knows what a big deal this is, and the fact that he's trusting her with something of his, with one of his guns, even, is impressive.

warms her heart, really. ]

...thanks.

[ she tucks her own gun back into its holster (easily drawn, if she needs it later), then jerks her head down the hall. ]

Let's go already. The faster we get through this place, the faster we can friggin' leave.

[personal profile] nostalgiabomb 2017-02-18 10:48 am (UTC)(link)
[ He very quickly nods. ]

This place sucks.

[ In place of a proper agreement.

But he's not wrong.

He steps around the creature, gives it one last little kick to make sure it's not playing dead, though he's careful to avoid kicking it in any spot where its spit still sizzles and corrodes the floor. No further movement, and he heads up the hall. The main corridor shoots off into other halls, other rooms. A proper floor, unlike the one they've just left, though considering all the noise they just made with Scrappy-Doo, it's apparently deserted.

Lights are on, but it seems like no one's home. ]

[ yeah, he is definitely not wrong.

everything is uncomfortably still around them, and at first, she keeps holding her breath for another one of those creepy teeth monsters, but nothing even moves. she finally just picks a hall leading off to the left, pausing by each open doorway.

slow, careful, peering into one and— nothing.

next door?

nothing. not even a goddamn rat.

but as they approach the third door, that smell of blood and flesh just slams into brae, and she pauses mid-step. ]

—the fuck is that?

[ she presses a hand over her nose and mouth, peter's blaster at ready, before she finally looks into the third room.

the place has been torn apart. blood coats the walls, the floor, and...the piles of body parts littering the entire space. ]

Holy shit.

[ ...that is absolutely not a squeak out of her as she stands in the doorway, her eyes flickering from one piece of gore to the next. the bodies look like they've been shredded, with jagged, ripped edges and what seem to be teeth marks with accompanying acid burns.

fuck, that guarddog clearly didn't care what it sunk its fangs into, apparently. had the stupid thing just been let loose in the bunker? did it get out? and what the fuck? ]

[ They alternate opening doors, one covering the other as the doors swing open.

Nothing. Nothing.

They empty rooms, the silent hall, set Peter's teeth on edge, makes that unease grow and grow and grow. He might literally hate this, the feeling of dread and anticipation at war with each other in his chest.

The stench of blood and viscera makes Peter grimace, though, and maybe it doesn't hit him quite as hard, thanks to his mask, but the way Brae covers her nose tells him it's probably just as bad as he thinks it is. He almost tells her not to open the third door, but—

... Yeah. You know, Peter doesn't know what he was expecting, but when the third door opens on this, he can't bring himself to feel too surprised. Still, he lets a soft, ]

Fucking Christ.

[ But Peter had been wondering. Why was a creature like the one they'd just seen simply wandering the facility? With acid dripping from its mouth, traveling corridors with floors and walls that clearly weren't treated to handle how corrosive that substance was? Either an escaped subject, or—

Or, well. Someone let it loose, and Peter only has a couple of theories as to the why of it. None of them are very good. ]

... C'mon.

[ This, when he can find his voice again, jerking his head back to the hallway. ]

I don't think we're gonna find much on this floor. We should keep heading down.
outruns: (Default)

[personal profile] outruns 2017-02-19 06:43 pm (UTC)(link)
[ when brae can finally move again, she reaches out to very purposefully close the door, shutting out the disgusting scene in favor of the hall instead.

peter's right, and with the way the whole floor just smells, she doesn't really want to think about what other gruesome areas might be waiting for them.

not like anyone's probably alive, anyway. ]

...yeah.

[ she clears her throat, taking a few steps back. ]

Let's keep going. Can't run into much worse than that, right?

[ an attempt at levity she doesn't really feel, but she's content to retrace their steps to the main corridor, to another stairwell that leads deeper into the bunker. her grip is probably a little tighter than necessary on the blaster as anxiety and anger bounces through her in equal measures, but fuck, she's glad peter is here — a fact she only distantly realizes, because the reality is that having him around eases something in her (as much as it can, given the current circumstances). ]

[ He feels that tight coil in his chest, emotions that aren't his, that aren't easily picked apart. Flashes of anger, in there, nervousness, anticipation, and a whole mess of other things he's not quite sure how to read, but they're there.

And as they climb down the next stairwell, Peter pauses, turns and hesitantly puts his hand on Brae's shoulder. ]

Hey.

[ Softly, with all the reassurance he can muster. ]

[ there's an automatic flare of relief when peter's hand settles on her shoulder, that unavoidable warmth that comes with contact, and she forces a slow, steadying breath. ]

Dude, what if he's not here?

[ part of her is terrified that owen already bolted, and they're going to pour over this place to dig up nothing. ]

We just keep houndin' him till he gets sloppy or exhausted or both.

[ brae really needed that second to break the weight of the bunker, the painful uncertainty of everything weighing her down, and that itching want to get her goddamn hands on owen. it feels like they're unbelievably close, but she's going to be pissed as hell if this turns out to be another swing and a miss.

she chases after him down the stairs, finally coming to a stop next to him, only slightly out of breath. ]

You're lucky your mask is still up or you'd be a freakin' Christmas tree right now.

[ one last smile, and then she's turning her attention to the corridor awaiting them. there aren't any halls branching off here, but a few doors on each side, and one door at the very end. she lifts the blaster again, her steps forward a little more careful, in comparison to the dash down the stairs.

but something makes her stop, go completely still, and listen. ]

...you hear that?

[ a few voices wafting under the door nearest them — small, soft, and...young?

oh, no fucking way. ]

[ At her threat, Peter just lives both shoulders in a shrug, as if to ask, "What're you gonna do?"

(Quote from man killed.)

They don't get too far into the hallway before Brae pulls up short, and when she does, Peter's gaze snaps to her, worried. He doesn't hear it at first until she says something, and when he does, his blood turns cold. ]

—Shit.

[ It's the first thing out of his mouth, and he darts toward the first door. A single, heavy door with what looks to be a basic lock. An eye-level slot is punched into the metal, currently slid shut, but Peter doesn't bother to slide it open. Instead, he fishes into the bag slung across his shoulders, going for his lock pick. He tosses his remaining blaster to Brae to free up his hands. ]

Cover me.

[ Though he's reasonably sure Brae is already moving to do just that, and he sets to work picking the lock. ]
outruns: (072)

[personal profile] outruns 2017-02-20 07:01 am (UTC)(link)
On it.

[ brae's spent too many years doing this shit to not already be in position as soon as she catches peter's blaster. she keeps her eye on the hall, occasionally glancing back the way they came as peter starts on the door.

the noise has apparently drawn the attention from whoever's on the other side, and brae can hear the shuffling of small feet, a few hiccuping sobs drifting through the metal. it's a short moment before something clearer fills the quiet, a high voice, frightened and unsteady. ]

I-is anyone there? Hello?

[ brae bites back a wince, instead calling gently through the door, ]

Hey, yeah, somebody's here. We're gettin' you out of there, okay?

[ she can't quite make out the hushed, nervous voices on the other side, and the same voice replies. ]

Who...who are you?

[ she glances over her shoulder at peter. ]

Well, we've got the one and only Star-Lord here, and he's gonna get that door open real quick.

[ the voices behind the door (god, the kids, she realizes) get just a bit louder with their surprise and delight.

...at least they'll get something vaguely okay out of this, meeting a guardian of the galaxy and all. ]
nostalgiabomb: (118)

[personal profile] nostalgiabomb 2017-02-20 10:33 am (UTC)(link)
[ It's a damn good thing that Peter's wearing his mask, because it conceals the look of surprise that crosses his face at the quiet, pleased murmurs that trickle from behind the door.

(Most of the time, kids want to meet Gamora, or Rocket, or Drax. The guy who did the Running Man at Ronan the Accuser didn't strike a very impressive figure, after all.

But, you know, that was fine. He stopped deflating like a popped balloon at the question, "Where's insert-name-of-other-Guardian-here?" maybe, like, a month ago? So, it's cool.)

He looks over his shoulder at Brae, as she turns, and the pause is telling, even if his expression isn't, thanks to the mask. There's something weighty in the impassive gaze, at least – because they both know by now these are actual children locked up in here, which is fifty kinds of fucked up. More than one, certainly, though hard to tell how many. Anywhere between three and question mark. And Peter figures she probably realizes that because there are kids here, that the two of them need to get them the fuck out.

Which will fuck up things with finding Owen.

He wonders if Brae's realizes that, yet.

He turns back to the door, though, turning the pick, feeling the slightest movement of the tumblers. ]

Get you out in a jiffy, guys. Just sit tight.

[ It takes a couple more seconds, but he coaxes all of the tumblers up and away, and the lock yields, turning to unlock the door. ]
outruns: (073)

[personal profile] outruns 2017-02-20 08:16 pm (UTC)(link)
[ oh, brae knows — and that's probably the worst part. she is well aware that with these kids here, they can't just keep pouring over the bunker, looking for owen.

(probably exactly what the fucker had planned, she realizes bitterly, and that anger flares hot and vicious in her chest, teeth ground together before she forces everything back. he could be here right now, but they'll never fucking get to him when they have to take care of the children left alive.

...at least they are alive.)

brae looks away from the hall as the door slides open, revealing six small children, crowded together and looking out with something like wariness and relief. they all look somewhere between four and nine, all with bright orange eyes and navy skin that shimmered slightly in the dim lights. there's something vaguely reptilian about the artaxians, with their small, sharp teeth and the nictitating membrane that sweeps across their eyes whenever they blink. more imposing when they're older, brae recalls, but the children here are so impossibly small and frail-looking.

the two taller, older ones have herded the others behind them, something protective in the way they stand between peter and brae and the little ones. one of the smaller boys gets a look at peter and his mask and immediately ducks behind another child, clinging to their hand. (of course, in comparison, there's a few awed looks being directed peter's way.) the kids don't make any move to come out of the room at first, like they're afraid to so much as take one wrong step.

(something in brae recognizes the way these kids huddle together, that look on the older ones' faces as they try to provide something of a wall between the youngest and something unfamiliar. it tugs at a memory she has no desire to explore, and she buries it a little deeper.)

brae manages up a smile for them anyway, lowering peter's blasters (though still watching the corridor out of her periphery). ]

You guys ready to go home?

[ one of the older girls in the front has a dubious look for brae and peter, glancing between them. ]

Are we really going home?

[ like she doesn't believe them; brae doesn't blame her for a second. ]

Yep. Gonna get you back where you belong on the fastest ship in the system.

[ ...okay, yeah, the gibralatar isn't too fast, but pam's done a great job with all the upgrades (and the kids don't need to know that). ]
nostalgiabomb: (☆010)

[personal profile] nostalgiabomb 2017-02-20 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
[ They're fucking young.

It's the first thing Peter thinks; he doesn't know too much on Artaxian biology or anything, but these kids look young. Like someone literally nicked them straight out nap time in daycare, and his stomach churns.

He kneels down, his fingers pressing the trigger for his mask. It recedes from his face in tinkling blue light, and he tries his best to look unimposing and friendly. ]

Is it just you guys? [ There are other doors in this hallway, after all. ] Have you guys seen anyone else around here, other than the bad guys?
outruns: (072)

[personal profile] outruns 2017-02-20 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
[ well, the lack of mask seems to help, and one of the younger kids tries to take a few steps forward — though the girl who'd spoken gently holds him back. ]

Just us. There were more next to us before, but everything got quiet a while ago.

[ brae's fingers tighten a little on the blasters, but her voice is still gentle when she speaks. ]

Do you know how long ago that was? [ should they bother checking? ]

A long time. They started taking little ones from this room, but...now they stopped.

[ fuck.

the boy who tried to move earlier ducks under the girl's arm and walks right up to peter before she can snag him. ]

Floren! [ it's a quick admonishment, but the little boy (floren, brae assumes) just stands right in front of where peter kneels. ]

How'd you do that with your face?
nostalgiabomb: (☆011)

[personal profile] nostalgiabomb 2017-02-20 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
[ oh jesus. small child.

Peter's, like, not great with kids, which is a surprise, considering he's pretty much a child himself, but he's, like. Never quite sure what to— say to them. Because they are not adults. (He barely seems to know what to say to adults, either, but he manages to get by.)

So when— Floren, apparently, darts in front of him, Peter blinks, looks for a second like he might actually be dealing with a ticking time bomb, and—

... Oh.

Peter huffs out a laugh, turns his head a little to show the little metal device hooked over his ear. ]

It's a button. Here, watch.

[ He presses the trigger again, and blue light flows around his head again, solidifying into metal. The red lights of his mask's eyes flare to life as it forms over his face, and he turns back to face the kid. ]

Cool, huh?

[ not without a touch of pride. ]
outruns: (069)

[personal profile] outruns 2017-02-20 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
[ the little boy watches with rapt attention, and after peter demonstrates and the mask solidifies again, floren's face just lights up with a big, delighted grin to show off his pointy little teeth. ]

Uh-huh! Larreth, did you see, did you see?

[ he turns to the older girl, who just offers him a nervous smile and waves him back over. ]

Can we leave now?

[ the girl (larreth?) doesn't sound impatient, but...anxious. brae doesn't blame her; the faster they leave, the better.

brae looks over at peter, then glances down the hall towards that big, centered door.

f u c k. ]

...yeah, let's get you guys out of here.
nostalgiabomb: (☆012)

[personal profile] nostalgiabomb 2017-02-20 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Peter gets to his feet, catching Brae's gaze and following her eyes to the door down the hall.

She seems to have already drawn the conclusion for herself – Owen's not worth their time, right now. Not if they have to get these children back to safety, anwyay. Still, Peter offers a quick shake of his head as if to warn her off from any thoughts she might have the contrary, before turning back to the kids and clapping his hands together. ]

Alright, we're gonna do the buddy system for this. Everyone pair up, okay? Find your partner and grab their hands.

[ It's a vague memory from his early grade school days. It seemed to work – or at least, none of the kids in his class seemed to vanish during trips to the zoo, or whatever the fuck. ]

Brae leads the way— [ And he gestures at her with his thumb. ] —I'll be at the back of the line. No one gets ahead of Brae, and no one falls behind me. We got it?
