Ain’t I allowed a poetical soul?

[ He asks it cheerfully, but the sharpness of his smile belies him. The cards whisper as he riffles them.

Vasquez is an odd one, Faraday thinks. Like him, but not, with a smoothness to his steps that screams feline. This close to the full moon, Faraday can smell it on him, that strange little tang in that marks men like them as different, sitting on the back of his tongue as he breathes – not quite human, but close enough to fool anyone who didn’t know any better.

He wonders what it must be like, changing like Vasquez does, keeping his mind in a new body. Faraday doesn’t remember much when he changes. Pain as his bones shift and muscles rearrange, certainly. But otherwise, just little bursts, here and there, like the sensation of freedom as he runs and howls under the moonlight. The feeling of a battle-high as he gives chase, bounding around trees and bushes.

At least once, in the early days of the curse, the flash of a man’s face fixed in an expression of terror. Screams turning to gurgles. The taste of blood on his tongue.

(Faraday woke that morning with his front tacky and red, and he ran.

Resolved to stay away from people in the week before a full moon, after that.)

But that cat form of Vasquez’s had been massive, deadly – maybe just shy of Faraday’s form when he changes. In a fight, he’s not sure which of them would win. Vasquez has speed, agility, and his wits about him, a cleverness that Faraday’s form surely lacks. Faraday, though, has strength and size and a near all-consuming desire to kill.

It’d end in a bloody mess. At least Faraday knows that for sure.

Faraday and the others had witnessed Vasquez’s transformation firsthand, their first evening in Rose Creek. And there was something to be said for having a powerful creature as that circling him in the street, cheeks bloodied and teeth bared, snarling at the bastards as they approached before he slashed them to ribbons with his claws and fangs.

Certainly made a man feel unstoppable, at least.

He stretches out, his deck cradled in one hand as he slouches back to rest his elbows on the landing behind him, and he turns to look at Vasquez more fully. (The moonlight ghosts over his face, gives his eyes a vague, yellowish tinge.) ]

To what do I owe this dubious pleasure?

I think you’re making up words now, perrito.

[ Not the most flattering nickname, to be sure, but he privately finds it amusing. He’s run across other wolves now and then, but never this close to a full moon, and certainly never on one. Faraday has a feral edge to him now, little hints of the animal that wants out.

He wonders if Faraday truly loses control of himself in the battle, would the hunters try to put him down?

Vasquez eases down the steps, coming to sit alongside the gambler. His shoulders rise in a slow, unconcerned shrug, eyes cast upwards for a very long moment. ]

Just out for some air.

[ His gaze flicks to Faraday. ]

You only change with the moon, yes?
peacemakers: (068)

[personal profile] peacemakers 2017-02-17 08:11 pm (UTC)(link)
[ He scowls on instinct at the word – nickname? insult? both? – and watches Vasquez almost warily as he sits beside him. ]

Quit callin’ me that.

[ Because whatever the hell “perrito” means, it certainly can’t be good. Not with that private little smile Vasquez puts on, like he’s told a particularly funny joke, the punchline of which only he knows.

It’s maddening.

He watches Vasquez from the corner of his eye as he settles, as he thinks, as he offers his answer to Faraday’s question. Faraday doesn’t quite believe that’s the entire story, “Just out for some air.” Then again, if Vasquez had turned the question back on him, it’s the reasoning he’d offer as well. Faraday needed some air after sitting with the others in the saloon—

(hearing the faint pulse of everyone in the room, heartbeats, breaths, the grinding of teeth as they chew, the scrape of metal on metal as their utensils drag on their plates, the wheezing of wooden furniture. the scent of sweat of smoke of liquor of gunpowder of beans and bread and meat and rice.

blood in the air, too. coppery, sweet. a man with a bandage wrapped over his hand, cut himself sawing wood, another with blisters from digging trenches, another brought in from the mines, injured by a blast. wounded, weak, vulnerable.

easy prey.

—and came out here to be by himself.

Faraday resettles against the steps, bringing his hands together to lazily mix the cards in an overhand shuffle. ]

Just with the moon. [ Lightly, like being what he is isn’t a curse. ] Can’t all be lucky enough to change when we want.
lawbreakers: (068)

[personal profile] lawbreakers 2017-02-17 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
[ He gives a noncommittal hum at Faraday’s protest of his nickname. He won’t stop it, of course, unless the end of the week goes particularly sour for the lot of them, but he does make a mental note to ease off just a little. Best not to raise Faraday’s hackles too much.

(He does wonder if Sam knew what Faraday was when he recruited him into this little band of misfits. Sam was a damn good hunter, so maybe he could tell.) ]

Just at night.

[ As if that somehow made it better or worse. It means, like Faraday, he still has to be good with his guns to get by in the world. Can’t take it all on with claws and teeth and preternatural strength.

But there are days where his skin feels like it’s on too tight, like he can’t bear to live in the human world a second longer, and the instant the sun goes down, he shifts and he runs. He hunts and climbs and it’s so wonderfully freeing that he forgets that at the heart of it, he’s an evil, twisted thing.

This is by far the longest he’s been in civilization in a long while, and the man in him is glad for the company, for the sense of purpose, but the animal in him gets restless. He sighs, hauling himself upright. ]

Too noisy in there. I’m going for a walk.

[personal profile] peacemakers 2017-02-17 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Just at night.

[ He repeats it back mildly, if not a little patronizingly, because the distinction is evidently important. But he grants that it is a necessary distinction. Not as though Vasquez can shift and deal with his problems in the daylight with an application teeth.

Not for the first time, he wonders what it must be like. How it feels, to change to and fro at will. He wonders if it’s as addictive as it might seem, feeling as powerful as all that.

And there’s a grace to him, Faraday admits. A terrifying sort of elegance to that big cat form of his.

Faraday arches an eyebrow as Vasquez rises, the cards stilling in his hand. He considers him for a long second before he glances over his shoulder, where the yellow light of the lamps spills out from over and under the batwing doors, through the glass panes of the window. (One still shattered, after a Horne through a man bodily through it.) He turns back to Vasquez and slowly slips the cards into the waist pocket of his vest.

And in that same mild way, ]

You want company?

[personal profile] lawbreakers 2017-02-17 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
[ He knows what it’s like, to want to get away from people. Considering Faraday has no say over when the beast in him rears its head, the press of warm bodies in there must have been maddening.

So at the offer he shrugs again, and offers just as mildly. ]

If you like.

[ The streets are mostly dark, save for the lights from the saloon and a small smattering of windows. The dark never bothered Vasquez much, so long as he had the stars overhead he had more than enough light to see by.

His ultimate destination is the fields outside of the town proper, but he’s in no hurry to get there. ]

Did you know Sam was a hunter when he picked you up?
peacemakers: (026)

[personal profile] peacemakers 2017-02-17 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
[ It’s not the most effusive of acceptances to Faraday’s offer of company, but at least it’s not an outright rejection.

So he stands, stretches, rolls his shoulders, before he falls into step beside Vasquez. This close to the full moon, his senses are heightened – and it took him ages to get used to the sensory overload, for it to stop making his head pound like every hangover he had ever experienced combined. Now, he can focus, block things out, let in just enough to make the change advantageous, rather than a burden.

The yellowish cast of the moonlight across the streets, the rooves. The rustle of their clothing as they walk. The crunch of dirt and rocks beneath their boots. An owl hooting quietly in the dark, the horses nickering and huffing in the stables. The smell of freshly turned dirt and black powder, grass and sawdust and that distinctly crisp scent of the night, carried in on the warm breeze that rasps against his skin.

It makes walking in the dark like this less hazardous than it would be for a normal man, at the very least.

He makes a light noise at Vasquez’s question. ]

I did. Saw him at work, trackin’ down a fella called Powder Dan. Pale sorta man, took up bartendin’, apparently. Heavy pours, decent prices.

[ Faraday tips his head slightly to one side. ]

A ghoul, though. Ate a man and his boy. His wife, too, though I’m a bit fuzzy on the details, whether the eatin’ came before or after he had his way with her.

Suppose it don’t really matter, just that they’re all dead, remains scooped up and buried. Anyhow, I watched Sam bring ‘im down. Fastest son of a bitch I ever saw. Shot him stone cold dead ‘fore Dan could leap over the counter at ‘im.

[ A pause, and he shrugs his shoulders. ]

Man like that comes to you, says he’s got a job and don’t care what you are, you’d be a fool to say no.

[ It's a genuine curiosity of his. Everyone has heard by now the story of Sam and Emma tracking Vasquez down in the middle of the woods, scrounging for supplies in an abandoned cabin. Since it had been the middle of the day, everyone was saved from an unfortunate mauling, but he did give poor Emma a scare by roping her feet out from under her.

But he hadn't ever heard the story of how Faraday came to join their little band.

Really, it just drives home the fact that Sam Chisolm is a scary, scary son of a bitch. ]

I know how that goes. [ Said with the slightest hint of a laugh. ]

Surprised you're sticking around in town, though.

[personal profile] peacemakers 2017-02-18 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
Can’t be much of one.

[ Lightly, though he looks at Vasquez askance, watching him from the corner of his eye. He offers the usual story: ]

Sam did me the favor of buyin’ my horse. Seems only fair I stick around long enough to pay the man back.

[ But Faraday knows that’s most likely not what Vasquez is getting at, knows he probably means Faraday shouldn’t be so close to so many people with the moon waxing as it is, bringing the beast inside him so terribly close to the surface.

Doesn’t mean he’ll give the man the satisfaction of a straight answer. ]
lawbreakers: (030)

[personal profile] lawbreakers 2017-02-18 05:54 am (UTC)(link)
[ Of course it was going to be like that. In the short time he's known Faraday, he can't think of a single instance where the man directly answered a question he was asked. ]

I know that. But that doesn't mean you have to stay in the town.
peacemakers: (092)

[personal profile] peacemakers 2017-02-18 06:34 am (UTC)(link)
[ He scoffs. ] What, you expect me to camp out? Pitch up a tent and commune with nature and the Lord like Horne does?

No, thank you.

[ He sniffs, shrugs a shoulder. ]

'Sides. Don't got any whiskey out in the fields.

[ Faraday is a man of simple pleasures. ]
lawbreakers: (063)

[personal profile] lawbreakers 2017-02-18 06:53 am (UTC)(link)
[ He snorts, giving a roll of his eyes. Faraday really is an odd one, because Vasquez feels like if he were in Faraday's place, with a wild animal lurking just beneath the surface, hungry to get out, he'd take the fields in a heartbeat.

But then, he doesn't know what it's like to be in Faraday's place. Wolves like him were cursed, changing with the moon, losing control in the process. For Vasquez and others like him, their animal half has always been a part of them. It was something to be embraced and understood, never feared or avoided.

Would that he could offer Faraday that sort of peace. ]

Last I checked, bottles can be carried from one place to another.
peacemakers: (060)

[personal profile] peacemakers 2017-02-18 07:17 am (UTC)(link)
Company can't.

[ A pause. ]

'Least, not without a whole lot of kickin' and screamin', and I don't got the patience to deal with all that.

[ He likes the reminder, likes the test, likes the challenge. Part of him appreciates the fact that he's kept his composure for this long, when in the week before a full moon he would usually be heading out, searching for a safe, deserted place to hunker down. The reminder that he's still in control of himself pleases him a little.

Faraday admits – to himself, at least – that Vasquez isn't wrong, that Faraday should be out in the fields as they draw closer and closer to the night of the fight. That he should put distance between himself and the other men. But maybe that's the thing. Maybe him being so quick to leave people behind is the problem. Maybe soaking in the scents of the folks of Rose Creek will make him more likely to remember who his allies are, come the night of the battle.

Probably not, but maybe.

The moonlight soaks into his skin as they walk, and Faraday tips his head back a little, basking it in again, eyes half-hooded as he takes a deep breath. The night air is far from cool with the heat of the day still lingering, trapped in the dirt and the stone, but there's a freshness to it that lingers in his lungs. ]

Why? [ He looks at Vasquez from the corner of his eye. Blandness in his voice again, but a sharpness in his yellow-green eyes. The corner of his mouth quirks up in a smile. ] Tryin' to drive me out?
lawbreakers: (090)

[personal profile] lawbreakers 2017-02-19 05:16 am (UTC)(link)
[ He watches Faraday as they walk, eyes following the line of his profile, illuminated by the moon. He's still trying to figure the gambler out, just how he ticks, how he deals with being what he is.

He doubts he'll ever get those answers, barely knowing each other as they do, but it's still a point of curiosity for him. ]

Not at all. Just making sure you're not doing something you don't want to be doing.

[ Faraday barks out a laugh. ]

Hombre, [ aw-m-bray ] I'd hoped you'd know by now I never do anything I don't already wanna do.

[ Horses tend to be fidgety sorts of creatures. Sensitive and so terribly easy to spook. By now, the two of them have reached the livery stable, and he wonders what it is that gives them away, because he hears a few dismayed nickers, hooves stamping uneasily.

They must just have a sense for it, Faraday thinks. For the unnatural, the deadly, like feeling a storm before it blows through. And depending on the phase of the moon, Faraday's relationship with most of those creatures tended to leave quite a bit to be desired.

Having him and a man like Vasquez passing so close by – he can't exactly blame the horses for their nervousness. ]

Well, that was woefully vague. [ With only a tiny hint of annoyance. Faraday always preferred getting straight answers, even if he wasn't in the habit of giving them. ] What's that supposed to mean?
lawbreakers: (123)

[personal profile] lawbreakers 2017-02-19 05:33 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Vasquez tends to make most animals nervous- they're smarter than most people give them credit for, and they just seem to know there's something predatory about him. Finding a horse that would let him ride it had been something of a challenge.

That the horses are nervous when they pass by the livery is not a surprise at all. ]

It means if you want whiskey, bring a bottle. If you want company, I could be company.

lawbreakers: (019)

[personal profile] lawbreakers 2017-02-19 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
[ The open wariness sort of surprises him, like he expected Faraday to dance around the offer, and he glances over with raised eyebrows. ]

Because it's oppressive back there. Too many people, too many heartbeats.

You're not so bad, though.
peacemakers: (045)

[personal profile] peacemakers 2017-02-19 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
[ That startles a laugh out of him, and Faraday casts Vasquez a disbelieving sort of smile. ]

Gushing as that recommendation was, pretty sure that just goes to show you don't know me very much at all, amigo.

[ They reach the edge of the town, where the dirt path gives way to green grass. The creek catches the moonlight, reflects up whatever few clouds linger in the night sky. Faraday catches the scent of water in the air. Damp earth. Grass and dirt and the lingering smell left after firing a gun.

It's a welcome relief from the stench of sweat and blood, liquor and food, and the monster in him stops clawing at the walls of his chest, slowly turns, relaxes.

He can't help the sigh of relief that escapes him. ]
lawbreakers: (026)

I know enough.

[ Blandly, but he's still watching Faraday. He watches the tension go out of the other man, leaving with a sigh, and the corners of Vasquez's mouth quirk upward knowingly. ]

See, already it's better out here.

[personal profile] peacemakers 2017-02-20 06:33 am (UTC)(link)

Smug bastard.

[ This, grumbled under his breath, though not nearly so soft as to disguise the words.

He takes in another breath, rolling out his shoulders, refusing to admit that Vasquez is right – it is better out here. Easier, without the press of men and women on all sides; easier, without the thing in him looking out of his eyes and sighting the most vulnerable prey.

(the both of them, watching Vasquez. considering. appraising.) ]

Well, now we're here instead of there. [ An expansive wave of his hand. ] Now what?
