Matt had been out at Josie's. It was a rare night where he didn't have anything coaxing the Devil out to the rooftops, and he took advantage of it as best he could. He'd just arrived at the outside of his building when something caught his attention. Bullets and screams, not many blocks over.

So much for an end to his night.

He didn't think about going upstairs to get his suit. Fight or flight instincts had kicked in and Matt ditched his cane, turning to run toward the incident. The nearer he got, the more he could hear and smell. Scared sobs, hushed and frantic murmurs. Blood and gunpowder.

Standing in an alley around the corner, he started to work on the best way to go inside without any chance of being recognized. He should've stopped to get the suit.

Peter tended not to wander into Manahattan. Personally, as a vigilante, Peter wasn't overly fond of crossing into Avenger territory. Besides, Hell's Kitchen had it's own set of problems and the heroes with which deal with it. So, in theory, Peter stayed pretty much exclusively in Queens, unless there was a major threat (or the Avengers were across the ocean, whichever came first).

He'd been tracking these robbers, though; the only reason he didn't stop them in Queens was because he'd been distracted by a fire, then a mugging. He'd thought he'd lost them, but since he knew the general direction they were headed, he'd swung through Manhattan in the hopes of catching wind of them.

Sitting on top of a lamp post, eyes closed to help him focus on his hearing, the footsteps almost startled him. He opened his eyes just in time to see a man's back, running down the street. What in the hell? It didn't look like he was being chased.

Peter decided to follow him, crawling along the buildings behind him. His hearing was good, but not as good as Matt's, so he didn't hear the sobs until a few blocks later. Ah. But - what?

Matt was too preoccupied to notice someone else was there. With no other options, Matt ditched his suit jacket and took off his tie. He would just have to go in and hope it was dark enough that no one would see. A quick in and out. People were still alive and the police sirens (in the distance, closing in within minutes), might startle the shooters in pulling the trigger again.

The building was old and brick, but no fire escapes. No second levels, then, but there had to be a back entrance or, in some cases, a basement level. Matt's suspicions were confirmed when he found a short staircase leading to the bottom level. Door locked, Matt braced his hands on either side of the stairwell to start kicking it in.

This was bizarre. Just, downright bizarre. Peter wasn't sure whether or not to interfere, because that guy definitely didn't look like a civilian. He kind of wanted to see what he would do. Even with enhanced sight, Peter hadn't clocked the guy's identity, either.

There were too many unknowns, but Peter could hear the sirens in the distance, and the sobbing was still happening. There wasn't a choice here. He crawled down the wall behind the guy and said, "Need a hand?"

A quick line of webbing, a gentle yank, and the lock was broken, splintered off. Certainly easy enough to kick down now.

Matt bristled. For a moment, he got ready to defend himself, but when he realized whoever it was was helping him - well. All right then. Someone in a mask, Matt knew that much, because there was a subtle muffling to the voice. And then ... Strength. Matt didn't bother looking over his shoulder, because it's not like he could see anyone anyway.

"Thanks," he grunted, pushing in the door. Matt figured if the other cared enough, he'd follow, and it might be beneficial. Matt could do what he needed to do and this masked mystery man could take the credit for it.

Up the stairs and Matt stopped around a doorway, listening to the criminals talk to each other while the hostages they had tried to be quiet. His hand ran along the wall in search of a light panel.

Peter was not much for subtlety. This was best exemplified by the bright red costume, and his inability to keep his mouth shut. So while Matt headed up the stairs before the doorway, Peter climbed through it on the ceiling, taking in the scene. Yeah, those weren't his robbers. Damn. Five guys, built like brick houses. They had a couple hostages, maybe three, and plenty of weapons.

"How many knives do you really need?" Peter called, shooting globs of web to take at least one guy out of commission, and gluing another guy's hand to his hip holster before he lost the element of surprise.

Oh, for the love of - Matt pinched his eyes. He took back what he thought about this being good. But, hey, while this other guy had the men distracted, Matt could move in. The sirens were closing in.

At the sound of a gun being cocked, Matt moved, foot swinging around to kick the fun from the man's hand. His fist smashed into the man's face and when another came for him, Matt grabbed him by the arm to flip him. Then he moved to the huddled group of people, trying to not be put off by the metallic smell of blood. He could get them to street and leave the rest to Chatty McChatterson.

It was laughably easy, all things considered. For all the trouble they had gone to with the hostages, they didn't even try to use them as bargaining chips. Maybe that said something about the difference between Queens and Hell's Kitchen, but Peter didn't dwell on it, swinging into a guy legs first and using the momentum to topple him over.

Another shot of webbing sent the guy he'd webbed prior to the ground, yanking his ankle out from under him. "Yowch! That sounded like it hurt." There was a knife coming for his thigh and Peter knocked it away, only sustaining a small trickle of blood. "Uh, rude. Have you ever tried to sew spandex?"

The fact that the random guy he'd followed was holding his own did not go unnoticed. Peter was a notorious multitasker, after all. He dispatched the guy underneath him with a palm to the forehead, hard enough to knock him out. Webbing him was the easy part, while the other guys picked themselves up off the ground.

Generally, in Matt's experiences, Hostages were less for leverage and more for blatant violence. They were there to make a point. Probably the ones left alive were important in some way, related to a person who owes someone money.

As a fight went on around them, Matt ushered them toward the door. He took a hit to the face and clocked the guy, pushing him toward the costumed hero. "Keep them busy," Matt snapped. But he got the civilians out on to the street, and slipped down the alley just before the police arrived.

Oh, good. His jacket was still there.

"What does it look like I'm doing?" Peter called, catching the guy Matt pushed towards him with a line of web, hauling him into the fight. Another forty five seconds and Peter had a neat pile of webbed bad guys. He barely jumped to the ceiling in time for the police to burst in, scurrying out as they shot half-heartedly at him. The standing order was still to bring in the vigilante, even if he'd just assisted in catching the people they were chasing.

"Where'd you go?" Peter muttered to himself, hanging from the wall and scanning the area beneath him. He backtracked a little to the alley, figuring the guy would probably head back the way he came. Ah, there we go.

"I know we're not supposed to talk about it, but I'd pay to see your fight club, jack."

No rest for the wicked. Matt sighed as he shrugged on his jacket, walking back down the alley, away from the scene of the crime.

"No, you wouldn't," he said. Because no one wanted to deal with ninjas and possible immortality and all that shit. Matt reached up to touch his face where he'd been cracked by the butt of a pistol. Just once he'd like to make it out without getting his face bruised up.

"Aw, come on, you can't pull the cool guy card on me and just walk away." Peter followed after him, staying high in the shadows. He hardly wanted to fight the guy, but he was curious. Okay, and maybe a little suspicious.

"I mean I get the whole sunglasses at night aesthetic means you're untouchable, but seriously. Cut a guy a break."

[personal profile] trustinthedevil 2016-05-08 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
That got a snort. Matt wouldn't say anything to the contrary.

"Look, kid -" Because Matt could tell it was someone young. "Just forget it."

[personal profile] spideyguy 2016-05-08 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Peter had seen some crazy shit, but a blind crime-fighter definitely would have been a new one. Coming to that conclusion on his own would be ludicrous.

"Unfortunately, I can't. Kind of in the job description." He swings to land on a lamp post a little bit in front of Matt. "Is this a gang thing? Turf war gone bad?"
trustinthedevil: (044)

[personal profile] trustinthedevil 2016-05-08 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
"Probably." Matt just kept walking. Eventually the guy following him would have to leave, right?"

"There's a lot of gangs that make Hell's Kitchen their turf. It's not hard to get mixed up with them."
spideyguy: (Hm)

[personal profile] spideyguy 2016-05-08 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
"I meant you, dude." What other explanation did he have? "How do you know those guys?"

Considering Peter didn't hear the conflict until they were roughly two blocks away, he had to have known they were there. That was what Peter as sticking to, anyway.

You'd be surprised by his persistence. They still had several hours before he had to be in a lecture, anyway.

Matt turned on to a main street, hoping the trickle of late nighters would encourage his new friend to scram.

"Then how did you know they were there?"

Alright, you got him there. Peter sighed, shaking his head. "You know, that suit is due for a wash." It's all the warning he gives before he webs the back of Matt's jacket, intending to haul him up to the rooftop.

[personal profile] trustinthedevil 2016-05-09 04:56 am (UTC)(link)
Matt had such little time to react that he had to resign himself to it, huffing an annoyed breath through his nose when he hits the roof.

Okay, he thinks. This must be the infamous Spider-man.

"I heard the guns."
spideyguy: (Hm)

[personal profile] spideyguy 2016-05-09 05:03 am (UTC)(link)
"I didn't hear the guns from that far away." Peter severed the web, leaving Matt his space. He just wanted to talk, cut a spider a break. "So try again."

"Are you a mutant?" If so, he must not have been one of Xavier's. They hardly ever came into the city.

[personal profile] trustinthedevil 2016-05-13 04:46 am (UTC)(link)
"I told you. I heard them. And, no, I'm not a mutant."

Come on, give him a break. Matt moved to the edge of the roof, getting his bearings together.

"Well, how?" He's a persistent kid, coupled with his natural, insatiable curiosity? A terrible headache in the making, for anybody.

"Yeah, and I'm not part spider." Peter snorted, watching him closely. "Dude."
