Hawke frowned and seized his hand. "Did you punch a tree?" she asked, exasperated. Without waiting for an answer, she reached to her belt pouch and pulled out a strip of clean cloth, then started wrapping it around his fingers. Many would argue that Samson's body was a wreck beyond repair and a small thing like skinned knuckles wouldn't be much extra on top of the lyrium, but she was damned if she'd just accept that.

“A wall,” he corrected. He could explain how one pain detracts from another and the stinging throb of his knuckles takes a slight edge off his need. It’s not his body he’s worried about, it’s his mind. It doesn’t matter if his body was in peak shape if his mind slipped. And it does, more and more, without enough lyrium.

Hawke's frown deepened very slightly. He didn't have to explain. She was familiar with the concept, and she had an idea of what the lyrium (or the lack of it) was doing to him. It was high up on the list of things they didn't talk about--which was a long list.

"I suppose that's marginally better," she said, still exasperated. "Walls don't have splinters. But do it again and I'll kick you in the head." Not an idle threat, if not exactly one calculated to improve his behavior.
