The Train to the Afterlife

Sucks to be you right now

Maybe you know how, maybe you don't. Perhaps the memory is fuzzy, or perhaps it's crystal clear down to the look in your comrades' eyes. Maybe it was your time; you've done all you wanted to. Or maybe you weren't at all ready to go, maybe you went out kicking and screaming - but none of it matters. You know you're dead, and the train is taking you to an afterlife. Perhaps an afterlife of your choice; you might've earned that heaven. Or perhaps you've earned something else entirely.

It'll be a bit of a journey, though, so you might as well take your time and talk to the other people in your coach. Death knows no place: most of them are strangers, even from faraway worlds. But death knows no time either, so who knows, some of them may be people you know, even if last you knew, they were alive - or long gone.

Oh look, here comes the snack cart.

All the usual:
•Post with your character's name and canon in the subject line.
•Said character is now dead for whatever reason - canon, AU, what have you. They are on a train with other dead people from many other times, places and worlds.
•Characters don't know for a fact where they're headed - just a general awareness that they're going to some kind of afterlife. Whatever they think it is is up to the player.
•This meme is built especially for cross-canon interaction, and potentially for threadjacking and group threading - if you're interested, may be a good idea to state as much in your subject line.
•Tag around and play nice!
•TRIGGER WARNING: Meme obviously deals with death and may deal with other unpleasant themes as a result. Please be cautious.

Shamelessly lifted and barely changed from this.

Peter wakes up with a massive headache, propped up against the train window. He blinks, slowly pulling back from the window. "Hm..."

He lifts a hand to rub his eyes, pushing his glasses out of the way. There's...nothing, out that window, not even shadows of something. Did he fall asleep on the subway?

"What..." Peter turns, hoodie still up around his head, and looks around blearily. " 'scuse me, what was the last stop?"

[personal profile] kingsmansmordred 2015-08-07 06:01 am (UTC)(link)
"Charing Cross, innit?" He asked, in turn, brow furrowing. Honestly he didn't remember the train having stopped at all, but that seemed like it should have been the last stop.

He shook his head a moment later, "I actually don't remember. Don't think this is even the usual line, and fuck if I can remember how I even got here. You?"
spideyguy: (Talking)

[personal profile] spideyguy 2015-08-07 06:04 am (UTC)(link)
"Charing..." Peter frowned, sliding his glasses back on to look at his seat-mate properly. He seemed about the same age, maybe a year or two older, if that. The accent didn't seem unusual to Peter - it was New York. Right? Except...Charing Cross wasn't a subway stop at all.

"Coming up blank. I...don't remember getting on." Peter looked down, ducking to check underneath the seat, but no dice. No backpack, no skateboard. No Spiderman suit. Well, shit.

"Yeah, me either." He scrubbed a hand up over his face and through his hair, "And usually I love bein' right, but things... they weren't good if I'm remembering what actually happened and not some kind've crazy dream."

He would happily accept being very wrong about that, but he didn't think he was, he could still feel the pressure against his temple, could hear Roxy screaming, Merlin's voice in his ear telling him to just hold on and keep calm, and that they'd get him out of this.
spideyguy: (Woah)

[personal profile] spideyguy 2015-08-08 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
"What do you think happened?" Peter asked curiously, staring at him intently. He had a vague falling sensation in the back of his mind, but he shook it off. It was bound to happen, sometimes, when you spent a majority of your time swinging through New York city on spiderwebs. "You fell asleep too?"
kingsmansmordred: (distressed)

[personal profile] kingsmansmordred 2015-08-09 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
"Yeah." He said, fingers rubbing at his temple for a moment, half-expecting them to come away bloody, "Fell asleep thanks to a bullet to the head."

It wasn't a phantom pain, not really, it was just a sense that something had happened something might still be happening just without him actually attached to it except by the barest of threads. It was a sensation he didn't particularly care for.

"...that'll do it." Peter blinked, pushing his glasses up the bridge of his nose. "I guess we're. Ah. Dead, then."

Great. Peter leaned back against the seat, frowning. "How'd you get shot?"
kingsmansmordred: (observing)

[personal profile] kingsmansmordred 2015-08-09 05:03 am (UTC)(link)
"Hazard've the job I suppose." He shook his head, "Been shot at before, been clipped a few times, but this..." He sighed, dragging a hand through his hair again and slouching in his seat, "Job went south, fast. Not the kind've thing we could salvage."

Mostly he was just hoping that Merlin had been in time to save Roxy if nothing else. She didn't deserve the same as he'd gotten, or worse. He suspected it would be worse, and he bit back the roil of nausea that thinking about it too hard brought.
spideyguy: (Hmph)

[personal profile] spideyguy 2015-08-09 05:07 am (UTC)(link)
"What do you do? You a cop?" Peter's sinking feeling wasn't going away, but he wasn't sure if it was the realization that they were probably dead, or the odd sensation he couldn't place. When the guy says 'job', Peter starts to think, okay, maybe I was a little off with the 'cop' assessment. Criminal, sounded like, anyway.

"I'm Peter, by the way." It feels weird to offer his hand for a handshake, when they're dead, but he does it anyway, if a bit awkwardly like most things in his life.
kingsmansmordred: (drinkytiem)

[personal profile] kingsmansmordred 2015-08-09 08:03 am (UTC)(link)
There was a twitch of a smile as he accepted the handshake, "Eggsy." A pause, "Mordred." And then with that smile spreading just a little, he added: "And I'm a gentleman spy."

His brow creased then, smile dimming a little, "Was. Was a gentleman spy." He shook his head, "Fuck but that's gonna be hard to get used to."
spideyguy: (Default)

[personal profile] spideyguy 2015-08-09 03:12 pm (UTC)(link)

"A gentleman spy." Peter shook Eggsy's hand with a slightly incredulous smile. Not that he didn't believe him, but it makes him wonder if there's some sort of sorting mechanism on this train. "I didn't know such a thing still existed. But I guess that's kind of the point of the spy part."

"We shouldn't give up yet. We still don't know where this thing is going. Maybe we can get off." And go back, probably not likely, but Peter wasn't about to admit to himself that he was actually dead.

kingsmansmordred: (suiting up)

[personal profile] kingsmansmordred 2015-08-10 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
"Definitely part of the covert, yes." He agreed with a nod, "And you're American, yeah?" He didn't really need an answer to that, continuing with: "Don't do much work on your side of the world. UK mostly, but all of Europe, really, surrounding areas to some extent."

He hadn't been too far from home himself, he was still new at this, or new enough. He arched a brow at the rest, "Get off and go where? Not like we can go back."
spideyguy: (Science)

[personal profile] spideyguy 2015-08-10 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
"New York native," Peter listened, intrigued. Sounded a helluva lot cooler than his night job. "And they recruit young, or?"

"We don't know that." He shrugged, glancing out the window again. "Might as well try, right? What the hell, whatever it is can't kill us if we're already dead."
kingsmansmordred: (smug headtilt)

[personal profile] kingsmansmordred 2015-08-11 04:05 am (UTC)(link)
Now that question, that question got him suspicious, head tilting just a little as he studied Peter once more, "How d'I know this ain't all part of it?" He asked, "Like that movie, wotsit, the one where they make up dreams to get information out of people?"

If this was some kind of test he'd already failed, at least in part, as he'd given his actual name and not just Mordred, "How d'I know this ain't just all in my head?"
spideyguy: (Can't Look!)

[personal profile] spideyguy 2015-08-11 04:36 am (UTC)(link)
"Inception?" Peter raised an eyebrow, staring right back at Eggsy. "Could be, I guess. I sure hope we're dreaming."

"“Of course it is happening inside your head, Harry, but why on earth should that mean that it is not real?”" Peter grinned a little at his quote, and immediately fell victim to nerdy awkwardness. "Ah, I mean, why would you be dreaming about a skinny kid from New York?"

Peter sighed, shrugging a little. "If what you're saying is true, I think we're in the same car on this train for a reason. I...died a similar death. In my line of work."

"...I'm kind of Spiderman." So smooth, Peter.
kingsmansmordred: (browraise)

[personal profile] kingsmansmordred 2015-08-13 06:14 am (UTC)(link)
The name -Harry- caught him off-guard for a moment, as he was used to associating it only with Harry Hart, though he knew there were others, as he twigged onto a moment later when he realized it was a quote, and he'd been about to object having Potter quoted at him just because he was British when the rest of what Peter was saying caught up with him.

He shook his head a moment later, "Pull the other one, then." It was a statement of disbelief, not an actual instruction, because he forgot from time to time that slang didn't always carry over.

[personal profile] spideyguy 2015-08-13 03:16 pm (UTC)(link)
It actually wasn't supposed to be stereotypical, Peter was just an idiot. And he happened to really like Harry Potter. Cough.

"Um...what?" Peter stared at him cluelessly, scratching the back of his neck. Pull - what? Yeah he had no idea.
kingsmansmordred: (browraise)

[personal profile] kingsmansmordred 2015-08-15 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Eggsy blinked in turn, and realizing belatedly that it was a difference in language he corrected himself with: "Oh, right, uh, you're not shitting me? You're actually him?"

He knew, of course, that it was a little hypocritical of him to disbelieve it, considering his whole 'gentleman spy' story, but he still couldn't quite wrap his brain around it.
spideyguy: (Webshooter)

[personal profile] spideyguy 2015-08-16 06:28 am (UTC)(link)
"Yeah, no, I'm not - not shitting you here." Peter knew he didn't exactly look the part at the moment. A pair of glasses and a hoodie changed a lot about a guy.

So he shoots a string of webbing onto the window beside Eggsy's head. What, he was allowed the occasional reveal. Especially if they were dead.
kingsmansmordred: (Default)

[personal profile] kingsmansmordred 2015-08-16 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)

"Okay that? That's fuckin' awesome." He didn't have any of his gear, which was strange to him, considering that he'd died in his full armor, but he wasn't going to think about it too hard. Death was death and maybe it put people back to how they were the most comfortable when they'd been alive, and that was certainly Eggsy in his track pants and jacket.

"I'd show you mine, but..." He shrugged, "Obviously ain't got any gear with me. Not sure why."

spideyguy: (Science)

[personal profile] spideyguy 2015-08-16 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Peter cut off the webbing and let it loose, fluttering to stick against the train wall. If that was true, why didn't it revert Peter back to no powers? That was probably wrapped up in a whole genetics vs soul thing he didn't have the constitution to think too hard about.

"My suit's gone too." He sighed and let his head thunk back against the plastic seat. "Looks like they don't want us going anywhere."
kingsmansmordred: (smug headtilt)

[personal profile] kingsmansmordred 2015-08-19 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
There was a little quirk of a smile at that, "You make it sound like bein' dead's some kind of conspiracy."

And maybe it was, he didn't know. And it wasn't that he wasn't bothered by the train to -and possibly from- nowhere, he was, he just wasn't entirely sure what to do about it, or if there was anything to be done about it except wait.
spideyguy: (Smile 2)

[personal profile] spideyguy 2015-08-20 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
"How do you know it isn't?" Peter returns the smile wryly. "I don't know about you, but I've been a part of too much supervillain bullshit to think that it isn't."

Peter did not like waiting. He got too keyed up, waiting for something to happen.
kingsmansmordred: (grim)

[personal profile] kingsmansmordred 2015-08-22 01:10 pm (UTC)(link)
"Right, guess you've had your share of colorful megalomaniacs too, yeah?" He shook his head then, "Don't mean that we're both dead because of the same conspiracy, though."

Or that there even was one in the first place, but he was willing to go along with that line of thought at least.
