Screw this drought

the rain meme

Ah, rain—the precipitation that the whole world has a love/hate affair with. It waters the garden for free and ruins baseball games. It cools you off in the summer and it causes more ice and sleet to appear in the winter. Sometimes it is lovely and falls at a decent pace for a few hours, other times, it blasts the whole eastern seaboard away.

Poems and songs have been written about it, people have danced in it, others have cursed its entire existence, and still more refuse to go out and drive in it.

Now it’s time to roll some dice and see what the weather will have in store for you today.

1. Comment with your character, series, preferences, etc in the subject.
2. Roll a number between 1-5 with the RGN for an intensity.
3. Roll 1-15 with the RGN for a situation.
4. Reply to other comments and play the scenario out!
5. Don’t catch a cold!

1. DRIZZLE ☂ It’s not too heavy or too light of a downpour, just enough to wash away stuff in the air, water the ground, and clean up the streets.

2. MONSOON ☂ It’s horrible and awful! Rain is coming down in buckets, no one can get anywhere, the wind is whipping everything about, and now the cable is out.

3. SHOWER ☂ Reminds you of early spring, doesn’t it? A nice shower to make everything all green and smell fresh again. Lovely.

4. FLOOD ☂ While rain is good, it can sometimes be bad. Grab a boat!

5. CATS & DOGS ☂ You’re lucky with this one. It’s not the worst storm in the world, but it’s still pretty heavy. Be careful when driving!

1. A DARK, STORMY NIGHT ☂ You know all those stories that start off with a stormy night before something goes wrong: a murder, an attack by ninjas, a crime. It is one of the best known clichés in the world, and you’re stuck in the middle of it.

2. HUMIDITY ☂ It’s that time of the year again when the humidity rises and the rain has two options: make it worse or make it go away. Good luck getting the latter.

3. GRAY RAIN OF DEPRESSION ☂ We all know this one. Stuck in the middle of no where, or right after an argument, or something that leads to angst, the rain decides to express someone’s feelings in a physical form, serious or over the top.

4. QUIET MORNING ☂ Nothing to do, nowhere to be… sometimes the rain is a welcomed addition to a quiet day. Gives you an excuse to stay in, curl up in a warm blanket and a book, maybe a loved one or a cup of hot chocolate. With sprinkles.

5. PUDDLES ☂ After it rains, what is the number one thing you have to do? Go put on some rubber boots and splash around of course!

6. SUDDEN STORM ☂ It might have been predicted, but sometimes storms just sweep in and do their thing with little to no warning. Hope you’re not outside.

7. THUNDER & LIGHTNING ☂ Loud, surprising, scary, ominous, comforting, fantastic to watch or listen to… some like thunder and lightning, others not so much. Of course, if this happens before a big confrontation, the universe is telling you something.

8. CAN’T GET WORSE ☂ You did not say that. You did not just say that. How many times does this need to be seen in movies and books before anyone learns?

9. STUCK ☂ No, no, no, no. This cannot be happening. What happened to the ten percent chance of rain? You forgot your umbrella and now you’re stuck in it!

10. RUINED PLANS ☂ You had all these wonderful plans to go outside, have some fun in the sunshine, do some errands, maybe a date… and the weather goes against them.

11. DANCING ☂ Sometimes rain is a cause for celebration, or you just feel like doing something spontaneous. Grab someone to join you and get wet!

12. RAIN BATTLE ☂ The most intense, important battles happen in the rain. Verbal spars, punching someone in the guts; it’s all dramatic and climatic. And no one slips.

13. DATE ☂ Aww, don’t let the weather ruin your date! It can be really romantic, being out in the rain, and it’s always fun to go with the flow.

14. A DAY INSIDE ☂ Sometimes, it’s just better to stay inside and enjoy something simple and easy like board games or catching up on TV shows, or maybe the bills.

15. WILD CARD ☂ Was there something I missed? Did you want to roll again or choose your own adventure? Go for it!

"Playing hooky" wasn't acceptable, or so she'd been told. But damnit, Blue simply hadn't wanted to "report in for tests" today, so she'd set off with her sisters in the early morning, checked in at the lab for their first session of the day, and rather neatly slipped away between "class change".

Knowing home would be the first place searched, she hid in the high trees nearby while she watched them investigate, although Blue noted with some dry amusement that she could have quite easily killed at least four of them without discovery but held perfectly still until the sounds of the engines faded.

Owen's camper had expanded somewhat in recent months; having to accommodate four late-teenaged girls with human-reptilian DNA definitely required lots of space. But Blue didn't care about that just now; she simply didn't want to be poked, prodded, examined or evaluated in any way today. To match her rather sour mood, the rain had begun just as the park's agents departed, so she was nice and soaked by the time she descended from the trees.

She managed to get inside, get dried off and curled up in her favorite chair near the big window overlooking the lagoon before the thunder began rolling--Blue would never say so to Owen or her siblings, but she loved days like this best. Alone, with nothing but the rain for musical accompaniment.

Admittedly, when they told him she'd run off, his first reaction was a little bit of panic. Only a little, of course, and he hid it beneath the usual aggravation, but he'll never get over that instinctive fear that one of the girls will deviate and end up in trouble. They're not like anyone else, they see the whole world differently. Blue, he thinks, even more so than her siblings.

So he doesn't chase her right away. There's enough teams after her, but if she's really in a mood, Owen doubts they'll find her. Maybe she's pissed off about something, maybe she's just chafing against the invisible restraints of her structured life on the island, but part of being the guardian for these girls -- not just their Alpha, but their guardian -- meant recognizing when to slow down, back off, and try again later. Everyone and everything, no matter how good their training was, could use a break once in a while.

The other three are safe with Barry, so Owen goes back to the bungalow alone. If she's up in the trees again, he'll wait for her to come down, but he finds her already inside and out of the pouring rain. He shakes off the clinging moisture before he approaches her chair, but he only stands beside it, staring out the window as well, with his hands on his hips. It's a minute or two before he says anything at all.

And then he looks down toward her. "You want to tell me what happened back there?"

She'd known he'd be coming; she didn't know how she knew, Blue just knew that she did. Perhaps it was the bond between just the two of them--she cared for her sisters, would protect them to death and beyond, but with Owen it was so different. She was the eldest, his were the first hands to hold her after her birth, his was the first voice she'd ever heard, the first eyes into which she'd ever gazed.

It was more than mere family.

When he did finally arrive, Blue kept her seat, staring out into the rain as he shook off the wet and approached to stand nearby. She tensed, some part of her--that annoyed part which had been growling under its breath all damned day--expecting him to pull out that clicker and give orders, and Blue felt she just might snarl back and earn a good ass-kicking for telling him just where to shove those orders, but he didn't.

The tension faded, leaving only the sound of the rain pinging on the roof. Blue shrugged. "Not really." He'd asked, after all. And she didn't. But she added, because it was expected, in a flat voice, "I just don't want to be fucked with today, is all." Class after class, lab after lab--she was tired of being their bipedal lab rat.

That's about the answer he was expecting, and he's honestly very glad that it wasn't a more violent one. Every single one of the girls is incredibly bright and clever, but Blue was the smartest one of the four, and that made her struggle that much harder against rules and instructions that didn't make sense to her. Most of the time, Owen was happy to provide her with reasons when she needed them, or to outline the logic step-by-step of a particular decision (even the ones he himself did not agree with). Sometimes, though, she just needed her space.

So he just nods, although it brings a frown to his face at the same time. He doesn't invade into her space, or even turn to face her completely; for all intents and purposes, they're both still just watching the rain together. However, he's still watching her, reading her mood as best as he can and making a decision about the best way to go from here.

"I get it." Really, he does. Her patience is wafer-thin on a good day and she doesn't exactly enjoy taking orders, even from him. "You've all been run through a lot of tests lately, you're right. I'm proud of you for putting up with it this long, Blue, I really am." His frown deepens slightly. "But you can't just vanish between your lessons, even if it is to come back here. That's how a Code 19 starts."

Granted, most of her handlers and even some of the higher-ups around the park are used to the stunts that get pulled by a group of complex teenage raptor-girl hybrids, but that doesn't mean they like it. All it takes is one high-strung manager with a radio to call in the ACU over Blue's little sojourns and make everything a full-blown emergency.

"It's okay for you to get fed up with this shit once in a while, but that's when you tell me. We'll figure something out together." Then his tone gains an edge of wry fondness. "That's a mark of an intelligent species, okay? They communicate."

More so than her siblings, Blue was keenly aware of body language and nuance of expression; she was still wary of Owen's proximity, but trust kept her still and quiet. He knew how dangerous she could be, after all. She rolled her eyes to his warning about 'Code Nineteen', swallowing an uncaring snort of derision.

"I don't care," she finally said shortly. "I'm not a baby, Owen. I don't need keeping all the damned time." It was so teeth-gnashing, being shuffled from exercise to exercise, physical and mental evaluations, combat and weapons training, puzzle simulations, tactical simulations... "Why don't you just put me on a leash or something, if that's all any of us are good for."

Although she refused to pout outright, Blue's lower lip did protrude just the slightest and she glowered out into the downpour, but she didn't snivel. Sniveling and whining was just far too juvenile, thank you. "Doesn't matter what we tell or don't tell, Hoskins isn't going to let up on us." Sometimes those idiotic humans forgot just how sharp the quartet's hearing actually was. "It's just nine more months until we're sanctioned for field tests."

"You let me worry about Hoskins."

It's a little too sharp, the way it comes out, but the sharpness isn't directed at her so much as it is at the man who isn't present. Owen knows exactly what Hoskins wants to do with his girls, but the more he works with them, the more uneasy he gets about letting them move up to the next phase. In fact, if he has his way, there won't be any field tests.

But that's a conversation -- or an argument -- that he's going to have with the people in charge before he has it with the girls.

"For someone who hates the tests so much, you've got the highest marks out of all four of you." He peers out into the downpour again, sounding like he's reading an excerpt from her latest evaluation. "Strong leadership, advanced physical prowess, but erratic behavior. You've also got the lowest marks because you get fed up with the techs and stop doing what they want you to do." Looking back at her, he raises an eyebrow. "Doesn't sound to me like someone who's trying to avoid one of InGen's leashes."

Blue hunkered down further in the big chair, propping her arms in the window sill and resting her head on them. She unconsciously fidgeted as he rattled off the statistics; she knew her strengths and weaknesses, but hearing them made her irrationally self-conscious.

She gave Owen a glance from beneath damp black hair, then turned her eyes back to the window. Blue took a breath, held it a beat, then sighed it loose, shrugging. "What do you think'll happen if I ace everything?" she demanded. "They'll have me operational before I even graduate." She turned a look on him again, it clearly stating You know it, and I know it.

"Besides," Blue added, voice going quiet, and she squirmed briefly, "--I don't wanna pull too far ahead of the others." She didn't have a doubt that InGen would separate the siblings if it was possible. And being forced away from any of her family was guaranteed to raise Blue's figurative hackles, if not become downright lethal for the unfortunate soul assigned to make it happen.

He does know it, and he's not happy about it at all. Training these girls to understand what they were, where they fit into the world, and how to use their gifts to the best of their abilities was one thing. Prepping them for some kind of military assault team was a different animal altogether. Owen knows that he's just one man against a corporate goliath like InGen; he's got Masrani's ear, and that's keeping him in control for now, but Hoskins is like a dog with a bone.

Although every single one of his girls is important to him, Owen and Blue will always have a connection that's altogether deeper, no matter how many times she challenges him or he has to direct his authority specifically toward her and her rebelliousness. If he wasn't around to lead the four of them, she would. And he has no doubt she'd do a damn good job of it... when she was ready.

Blue's anxiety reads through her tough exterior, maybe because Owen has the same ones, or at least very similar. It's been causing him plenty of sleepless nights lately, as the girls get older, and stronger, and better at every test the handlers can come up with.

"Hey. Look at me." He turns toward her then, leaning over her chair with one hand against the back, locking her gaze with his own and holding it there. "I'm not here just to boss you around and toss out orders. I'm here to keep you and your sisters safe. You follow me, I protect you. That's my job. And I don't care what those sons of bitches write down in their little notebooks because you're my girls, and no matter what plans they think they have, I'm gonna be right there, on your side."

The imperative in his voice was impossible to resist, and Blue lifted her head to do as bid. She met Owen's gaze steadily, its intensity far more palpable than a human's could ever be. And she listened. Listened. What he said, she knew, but to hear it again strengthened a tenuous strand in the bond between Alpha and Beta, a relationship so important and interwoven it was sometimes hard to tell where one ended and the other began.

"...I know," she finally whispered, biting at the inside of her lip to keep it from trembling. She wanted to cry, to throw herself into his arms and let him hold her, keeping the world away until she felt she could handle it again, to scream and wail and beat her fists on his shoulders to vent her frustration, but she didn't; Blue simply sat silent and quiet. She was the Second; she was the example. The others were allowed to fall apart, to show their uncertainty and confusion if necessary, but Blue never would.

To do so was weakness. And weakness was not tolerated.

Blue took a deep breath, lowering her eyes and resting her head against the chair back. "...I gotta go back today, don't I?" It...really wasn't a question, more a morose prediction. But God, she didn't want to!

Although she has one hell of a temper when she's riled up (and even, sometimes, when she just felt like it), it's been years since Owen has seen Blue cry. Not since she was a very small child, at least, and even then it never happened often. She always held herself together better than her sisters, always too proud to let herself soften at the edges. This is one of those times where he wishes she would ease up on herself a little. It's almost worse to watch her lock that suffering in.

If it was Charlie or Delta or Echo in front of him right now, he'd reach out to comfort them, reaffirming the bond with a touch, but for Blue he holds off. As much as he'd like to do it, he knows better than to draw attention to her vulnerability. Even without her sisters here to see it, she won't drop her guard.

When she asks him that, sinks back into the chair like the energy is just draining out of her, he straightens up again with a frown. Then he looks out the window, and checks his watch; it would be a few hours, still, before her sisters returned, and as far as he knew the search teams were still out looking.

"I don't know how they think they'll find anything in this weather," he says, almost to himself. "But I could have sworn I last saw you heading toward the falls. Nice and peaceful out that way." Owen purses his lips. "Guess I better let 'em know, so they're not looking in the wrong place."

It wasn't much of a smile, but then Blue had never practiced smiling much. Just a minute curve of lips, but then part of the ice in her eyes melted, saying so much more than words ever could. She wiggled back down in her chair, content for the moment. As long as the rain held out, she didn't have to be Beta for a few hours, and her Alpha was near, all was...tolerable in the world for Blue.

"Because it's a nice day for a swim, right?" A humorous lilt tinged her voice and she scooted over in the chair, silently inviting if he wished; it was still large enough to accommodate. And if Hoskins and InGen stayed away from this part of the island forever, that'd suit Blue right down to the ground. Just seeing Vic Hoskins sometimes made her teeth itch.

She's not alone there. Hell, there were times when Vic Hoskins made Owen's teeth itch and he didn't even have raptor blood as an excuse. It was the lack of respect that got to him the most: here was a guy who rarely bothered to look any of the girls in the eye, and yet he still talked like he had their whole future planned out, like they were bred just to be aimed and fired like weapons instead of living things.

Even so, it's incredibly satisfying just to see her warm up even the slightest bit, and genuine fondness is visible in Owen's eyes when they return to her. He'll take that offered seat beside her, settling in alongside the cleverest and most complicated of his girls, and kicking his feet up to make it clear that he's not going anywhere immediately. Those search parties can chase their tails a little while longer.

"No swimming tomorrow, though." He tosses her another pointed look. "I don't care how nice the weather is."

"Deal." No doubt her instructors would put her through the ringer for skipping out today, but Blue didn't care. Tomorrow was as yet forever away, it didn't matter a bit of a damn what might happen then. Right now, she was content to surreptitiously sidle her way beneath Owen's arm, hesitantly shifting an inch at the time until she leaned comfortably against his side, safe. Protected.

Yet the rain was still steady enough to bring about melancholy, even secure as she currently was. Blue, head resting beneath Owen's, absently drew her fingernails over the back of one of his hands, and stared out into the rain again. "Owen?" she said after a few minutes of quiet, "will you miss us? When we're gone?"

She didn't like to think about the future, but Blue nevertheless knew that not thinking about it didn't stop it from coming ever closer. She knew what InGen's plans were for her and her siblings, but thus far, none of those plans had included Owen Grady. And Blue...wasn't all right with that.
myraptors: dareidiabolus (Living things.)

[personal profile] myraptors 2015-07-13 06:23 am (UTC)(link)
As she nestles in against him, he lifts his arm to accommodate her, as soundlessly and easily as if it's a regular part of their routine. This is the kind of thing that they never talk about, and she never asks for it, but it's always there when she needs it. Especially since he thinks that she needs it more than the rest of them. Owen settles his arm around Blue, a protective yet easy weight that will move when she does.

Although the steady sound of the rain could easily lull him into a doze, he senses that her mind is still working over something or other, and that keeps him awake as well. When she does speak up, for a moment it brings him very still.

It's true enough that as far as InGen is concerned, Owen is only serving as the temporary Alpha for the raptor hybrids until the company can replace him with a military leader in the field. One who won't remember how it felt to have strong little hands squeezing his fingers, or be able to count the scars he earned while they were figuring out what their claws and teeth were for. It won't matter how the girls prefer their meat, or what they like to do in their downtime, or that the same tone doesn't always work best with each one...

No way in hell. Owen is their Alpha, and that spot is non-negotiable. InGen will have to pry his girls from his cold dead fingers, or write him into the package deal. Leading the way into whatever hell or foxhole might be in their future would still be vastly better than sending them into it alone.

But that's for him to worry about; it's not something to burden her with, especially right now. So he just glances down at her with a small smile, and tilts his head briefly to press a kiss into her hair.

"I miss you girls whenever you're not around."

apologies in advance for slow and icon weirdness; blue is getting a new face

That...wasn't really an answer, and Blue knew it. But the affection was reciprocated regardless--a soft thrumming purr deep in her throat, a sound no human was capable of making. Yet another difference between the "Squad" and "normal" teenage girls. It was accompanied by a gentle soft nuzzle of her nose against Owen's throat.

She snuggled back against him with a long sigh, unable to stop thinking. Blue finally grunted in frustration and burned her face in Owen's vest, both hands clutching him tight. Despite her best intentions, a few traitorous tears did leak through, and a surreptitious sniffle emanated from somewhere around his shirt pocket.

No problem at all!

[personal profile] myraptors 2015-07-14 04:56 am (UTC)(link)
She doesn't push for a better answer, which is a small relief. Owen's still working out for himself just what he can do to change or even just delay the inevitable, but it wouldn't be fair to the girls to involve them in that tug-of-war. No matter how inevitable even that much might be.

When she nuzzles him, that smile's still there, and as she settles closer against him, his arm pulls itself around her a little tighter, a little more secure. Only, then she's suddenly burrowing against him, grasping at him more than he's touching her, and he catches that telltale tiny sniffle as if it was a clap of thunder. In his chest, his heart goes tight, and there's a part of him that's suddenly furious, not at her but at the rest of the world and any part of it that's responsible for upsetting her.

Unfortunately, that feeling isn't exactly constructive at the moment. Owen doesn't say a word. But after a moment, he does grip her shoulder with a protective squeeze, and his other hand touches her hair, as he tucks her head under his own. At least she can't see his frown, as he struggles against the hateful feeling of being powerless.

[personal profile] bluebetabitch 2015-07-14 05:11 am (UTC)(link)
She was too big to crawl into his lap and hide, as she'd done perhaps twice or even thrice too many years ago, but Blue was more than capable of clutching tight to her only anchor of stability although she was careful not to squeeze too much, lest she hurt him. Never that, no, never that.

It was hard for her, turning uncertainty, frustration and anger into something other than a homicidal killing spree. The raptor in her blood needed that violent outlet, it was the human who had to keep it carefully contained. Owen wasn't the only one who ofttimes felt helpless.

Nevertheless, she'd learned by necessity to stuff her myriad emotional responses down beneath the familiar icy shell, and, although it took longer than necessary, Blue managed to unclench her fingers, one at the time, and gradually unmashed her face from Owen's chest, scrubbing a fist across her moisture-bright eyes. Nostrils flared with her sharp breath and she returned to her former lean against him, breathing his familiar, beloved scent, feeling it restore a modicum of calm to her fractured nerves.

Blue gazed back out into the rain, fingers still tangled in a fold of her Alpha's shirt. There was very little emotion in her quiet voice as it broke the stillness as she said, "...I want to kill them all. I really want to." Because they did nothing but hurt. They didn't care. They were a threat to her pack's safety, to her family.

She sighed again, this time in resignation. "...that's why I left, earlier." Blue snuck a glance up at his profile, then back out the window. "...'cause I thought I really might."

His hold may be tighter now, but as soon as she moves, it loosens and drops away again: one hand to the arm of the chair, the other an easy weight against her back. Moments like this one never lasted long at all, with Blue, and Owen needs to think for a minute before he can even remember the last time.

As she straightens herself out, he stretches a bit underneath her, taking care not to dislodge her from where she leans in again. Even if he's prepared to let her off the hook for one day of skipping out on training, he's not going to be able to just relax here with her until her sisters came back. As far as the rest of the staff was concerned, this was still an incident to be handled as quickly and quietly as possible, and then it's straight back to work. Owen loves his job; it's rewarding on the good days, challenging on the bad ones, and it's been unbelievable to watch these girls grow up and learn, honing themselves into a finely tuned unit. But if he has days that just wear him out, he can only imagine what it's like for Blue and her sisters.

The point is that what she says doesn't exactly surprise him. It's the raptor talking, which isn't ideal, but what did they expect would happen in a hybrid like this? If she does snap and kill someone, he's not sure if they'd punish her worse as a raptor or as a human. What he is sure about is that a tragedy like that would be his fault. It's the Alpha's job to lead his pack down the right path, the one that means safety and survival.

"If it got that bad, then you made the right choice." His tone isn't exactly reassuring -- it's not okay that she wanted to kill anyone, especially her handlers -- but it's calm, at least. Not angry, only tense. "But we've gotta make sure it doesn't come to that, got it? Not even anywhere close. Because that's not gonna solve a single problem, Blue, and you know it. Tell me you know that."
bluebetabitch: (pic#9338125)

[personal profile] bluebetabitch 2015-07-14 06:02 am (UTC)(link)
"--I know," she whispered again. Yes, she knew it was wrong, killing was wrong, but why did it feel so good? And why were they training them all to do it so well? It made no sense. Being the prototype, the one in which the geneticists poured all of their insane ideas of mixing/matching human and dino DNA, it was a wonder Blue had managed to hang on to her sanity for so long. Some days, she wasn't sure that she really had.

But at least she had this, if only for a little while. This quiet time with Owen, just the two of them, to reconnect and get things straight again. And Blue wanted to be "straight", she really did want to please and do everything correctly, if only to see and feel the warm approval on her Alpha's face when she did.

"I just--I just needed to get away, before I did something...stupid." That was the right answer, never mind that the images of butchering those worthless squealing bipeds had been one of the most delicious daydreams. But no matter how her blood might froth for such a slaughter, Blue knew that the ramifications of that indulgence would be...catastrophic. She knew oh-so-well that her actions, her sisters' actions, everything they did was a reflection of Owen's work. If they failed, if she failed, then he would be held accountable.

And Blue wasn't going to allow that. She was his Beta, it was her duty to look out for him. She pulled her feet back beneath her and lowered her head yet again. Humble, submissive. "...didn't want you to get in trouble...'cause of me."

...damn. Just listening to her, now that she's in a sharing mood, Owen thinks this has gotta be doing even more of a number on her than he thought. They've been pushing her too hard, himself included. The acceleration of the girls' learning processes had made the team too cocky, made them pile on the puzzles and the exercises and chalk up incidents like this one to low maturity and aggression issues. Owen is a little sick at his own negligence.

They'd just love to see her now, as vulnerable and docile as this. Especially Hoskins. But they haven't earned the right: she doesn't want them to see it, and neither does he. This is just for the two of them, no bars or barriers. An Alpha and his Beta.

Except now she's got him sitting straight up, leaning forward to stare down at her until she looks up and meets his eyes.

"You think I give a shit if they want to punish me?" At that moment, the scorn in his voice could gives hers a run for her money. "I give a shit if they try to take me away from you. Because they think I control you, Blue, and if it looks like I can't do that anymore, they'll find someone who will. You're not gonna do something stupid because you're better than that. And if you start to get that itch, you tell me."

Blue chewed on her lower lip as he spoke, hearing the angry undercurrents in Owen's voice. She believed him, believed with all her heart, just as she believed that if, for any reason, he was taken away, there would be some serious cleaning to be done at InGen's laboratories. Because the blood would paint the walls.

Her nostrils flared as the tension rose, her breath came a little faster, a little sharper. Her brows lowered and her expression went flat. "No," she stated, a soft hiss following the word. "They can't." Just the thought of someone else standing in that spot was, well, terrifying. Someone like Hoskins. An involuntary growl escaped, Blue shook her head. She'd dismember him first.

Her fingers, their nails hard and sharper than normal, caught in Owen's leather vest, as if to keep some evil from bursting in and snatching him away right that moment. Blue abruptly shook her head again, as if trying to clear obscuring fog from her vision, but she was shoving that momentary surge down, down, down behind an icy mirror of unresponsiveness. The rain drummed in her ears, adding its soothing white noise.

"It's just..." She worried at her lower lip again. "I--think about things. And then try to think around the corner, like I'm supposed to." Like she'd been trained to do. "And it's--it's...I don't like the shit I see around those corners, Owen." She saw him being sent away; she saw herself and her siblings forced back into cages; she saw humans in white coats with long needles; she saw deep dark jungle and a target on the run in front of them...the only way out was to bathe in its blood.

"I can't stop thinking about them!" she hissed in a heated whisper. "I know it's bad I know it is but it's always there." Bright blue eyes bored into his, searching, almost pleading. "...how can I stop seeing it...?"

They can, and they absolutely will -- Owen knows it, and he knows that she knows it. Right now, the risk isn't there, but the possibility always exists down the line if things go south in the program. As long as he's still in charge, he'll do everything in his power to keep that catastrophe from happening, and even if it does, he'll go down fighting to contain it.

But he trusts in his girls. Trusts in Blue, even though she struggles more than the others, thinking too much and putting so much pressure on herself that even the smallest mistakes are seen as huge failures. They've got what it takes to make sense of the conflict in their instincts, he believes that completely. Fuck the field tests, the military ambitions, InGen's grand scheme: this is just about figuring out where these girls fit into the world. They'll never be normal humans, but... they're not savage beasts, either.

Owen locks with those vibrant, desperate eyes, and this time he doesn't stop himself from reaching out to touch her. It's not a quick, catching movement -- he wants to ground her, not put her on edge -- but a slow caress, cautious even, that starts at her jaw and brushes the side of her face.

"Everyone has thoughts they can't control, it's part of being human." He shakes his head firmly, rubbing her cheek with his thumb. "It's not about stopping them, it's about what you do with them. Don't pretend those things aren't in your head, Blue, they're your instincts talking, and you need to know what they're saying even when you're listening to me. But you always have a choice. You don't have to take any shit that's gonna make you sick like this, especially from yourself."

Still watching her intently, he smirks a little then, running his palm over her hair. "And if they're getting too hard to ignore, maybe we just need to wear them out somehow."

She started a bit when she felt the touch of his hand--overt deliberate contact was something she'd never really gotten used to, despite the importance of their socialization. But she didn't pull away. Quite the opposite. Blue's eyes drifted closed, the better to hide most of what she always kept tightly locked away, and she very minutely leaned her cheek into his hand, a small trill escaping from the back of her throat. She took a deep breath for calm, feeling as if she'd been stuck in a whirlwind of up and down, run the gauntlet of emotions from fury to despair and back to anger with a nice dose of helplessness tossed in for good measure.

Nodding when he spoke--she knew all of this, she did, but it was still good to hear Owen say it, because his voice was soothing, comforting, and despite her independent and rebellious streak (it was a very wide mile), for Blue Owen's word was tantamount to gospel--Blue very slowly leaned into him as he stroked her hair, again sliding her arms around his waist but nothing as desperate as before. She felt so damned tired--it was wearying, all this bullshit, and she just wanted it to stop.

"Maybe my instincts are just fucked up," she mumbled from under his chin. "I don't know if they want me to be a human or an animal...I don't really give two shits." A mulish snort followed, true raptor-fashion. "I just want...I just want 'em to leave me alone." Let her figure her life out without keeping score. "I don't wanna be this way, Owen." Still muffled. "We didn't ask to be--made like this." That sounded petulant, but it was still the truth.

Blue lifted her head, staring at him with wide eyes. "What are we to them, really? Assassins? Soldiers? Killers?" A dark line appeared between her brows. "They created us, so they think they hold all the control. It's not right."

"No, it's not."

He's frowning again, that grin melting right off his face as he forces down that helpless frustrated feeling that had nearly ripped his heart out of his chest when she'd started to cry. Honestly, at this point he's not sure even InGen knows whether they're training humans or raptors at this point: Owen has the sneaking suspicion that they expected these girls to act more like machines than anything else, the warring instincts canceling each other out until they were all but deaf and dumb and waiting for orders.

To their increasing dismay, that's not even sort of true. Blue, Charlie, Delta and Echo are in many ways more alive than any human or raptor.

Listening to her now is kicking into gear the ideas that had only just begun to plant themselves into the back of his mind: he has to do something. It's his responsibility as the Alpha to look after them, keep them safe. If he can't do that, even from InGen itself, then he's got no right to lead them anywhere. Not that he has any idea just yet what the hell he can do, but looking at her now, he knows there isn't much he wouldn't try.

"And you're not fucked up," he informs her firmly, gripping her shoulders. "Listen, we've been working you too hard. I'm gonna fix that, okay? We can't keep shoving all of this at you without giving you the time to make sense of it." That much, at least, he's sure he can do for her without wasting any more time. Besides, part of any good behavioral program involves eventually spacing out the interventions to make sure they're sinking in.

"Tomorrow you go back to training. But after that, let's try something new. Overnight on Isla Sorna? We can bring your sisters, or it'll be just you and me. What do you say?"

Something new? Blue's eyes lit up at that, immediate interest displayed as surely as if she'd perked up her ears like a canine. Her lips parted on a quick breath, an eagerness usually observed during a hunt or some other equally predatory exercise transforming her features into a bright, true smile and Blue drew back in surprised delight, nearly fidgeting with suppressed excitement.

"...really? You mean it, Owen?" But of course he did. Blue grinned still, a shockingly girlish laugh sneaking out somehow, and she shook her head, dark hair shadowing one side of her face. "Will they--I mean, can we? They've never let us go anywhere before..." None of the girls had ever left the island. Thanks to modern technology and satellite, they were well informed about the rest of the world, but to see and touch and smell and taste it...that was something entirely different! Almost too damned good to even believe!

"A-and can it be..." Blue worried her lower lip with her teeth, a touch unsure, but determined regardless. "...can it be just me and you? This time?" She loved her sisters, she really did, yet sometimes she needed space, and quiet. Away from Charlie's incessant prattling, away from Delta's overbearing mothering, and away from Echo's erratic impulsiveness.

Just Alpha and Beta. For her sanity's sake.
