Blind Date meme

The Blind Date meme. Pretty self-explanatory. No matter how awkward and unexpected they might be, there is always something exciting about them. Who is your company for the evening going to be? Will it be a person of your innermost dreams or someone you absolutely can't stand? And most importantly...

How are you going to handle it?

What do:
1. Post with your character! They're now in the middle of a blind date.
2. Comment to each other! When you do that...
3. Go to Random.org and roll a single die!
1.
First date
-- You've never been out on a date before, so someone's decided to give you a helping hand.
2.
On the rebound
-- You're recovering from a painful breakup, but your friends/family think they found a great person for you anyway.
3.
Not strangers at all
-- Someone thought you didn't know your date. Turns out you know them from somewhere.
4.
Hideously awkward
-- Hey wait, that's your ex/boss/doctor/distant family member! Or, even worse, it's that person you absolutely despise. This will go well!
5.
Existing partner
-- You two are just acting like strangers to spice up your love life.
6.
Future spouse
-- Unfortunately, you have to have an arranged marriage. Fortunately, you get to meet that special someone for a date beforehand. How will the night go?
7. ...or, instead of rolling, come up with your own scenario!
4. Play out the date. This meme can be completely fluffy, smutty, or hilarious. If you don't want smut, you can put that in your subject. It doesn't even have to be romantic.

[The destruction of the Iron Legion had freed up a great deal of Jarvis' time and as a result, he was keeping a closer eye on Miss Potts than he had done for years. Miss Potts had always worked long hours, whether it was managing Mr. Stark's schedule or managing Mr. Stark's company, but since the Extremis incident, Jarvis had felt mildly concerned. She had gone back to work very quickly, he felt, and there was no discernible difference in the amount of hours she was working, despite her condition.

It is a rather welcome challenge to quietly free her from obligations on her calendar for one Thursday evening. When she arrives home--the house in Malibu is unlivable as yet, but there is a furnished apartment kept for Stark Industries guests that Pepper has been using--she will find the table set for one, with seafood and asparagus manicotti kept warm in the oven and a bottle of white wine chilling in the refrigerator, next to a serving of tiramisu. The catering service they use is very good, but first he must ensure that she goes home.]

Good evening, Miss Potts. I feel I should note that it is five o'clock, and you have nothing on your calendar until tomorrow morning. Perhaps you ought to take this opportunity to leave the office on time?
onehotpepper: (a little busy here)

that is all i ever ask anyone for :)

(ooc: 2 things, thing 1: i'm an auditor so i'm sorry for the entire first paragraph D: ~ thing 2: there's a chance i'll be slow to awkwardly tag, my apologies. thank you much! this will be sweet :D)

[There's never enough time. Pepper is reviewing this month's performance reports -- or, she's trying to, but she keeps remembering the media frenzy that ensued when the audit of last year's financials was released. The auditors had felt the need to point out that, while Stark Industries was -- in all material respects -- as financially healthy as its financial statements indicated, investors should note that the former CEO was Iron Man, which meant there would always be a higher level of risk associated with the company than with, say, any other company traded in the NYSE. And it wasn't as if anyone hadn't heard about last Christmas, so there was all of that to deal with.

She should be happy it's over, but it's never really over. She's fully capable of handling it, of course. But she wishes, with a wry smile, that Extremis would enhance her mind as much as it does her physical capabilities.

Actually, probably not. She'd have blown up weeks ago if that were the case.

Jarvis's voice is a welcome distraction, but she's sure he's lying. She never leaves the office early, not since she started working here in accounting.]

Are you sure? Don't I have a marketing proposal to read?

[She might. She does schedule these things. Not that she doesn't want to leave, of course.

She pulls her calendar up on the computer and sees that it is, in fact, not a lie.]

Oh. How suspicious. [a little grin]

[It's not a very long drive home, despite the traffic. Once she's in the apartment, it takes a bit before she sees the setup. She toes off her shoes and crosses, barefoot, to the table. At first, she gives a faint smile, then a frown.]

I didn't order this. Did you do this?

(ooc: The first paragraph is GREAT oh man yes Pepper doing paperwork and dealing with minutiae yesss. And no worries on tagging speed, friend, enjoyment > speed!)

I did indeed take the liberty.

[High-definition touchscreens are standard-issue on every Stark Industries property now, and an image shimmers into view, tall and sandy-haired and crisply businesslike in a pressed Savile Row suit, hands folded properly behind him. Jarvis does not use his visual image often, as he has discovered that it sometimes unnerves people, and Mr. Stark finds it frankly distracting when he is working, but Miss Potts has never minded when he chooses to activate it.

An image of her calendar appears beside him and he gestures to flip to the next day, and enlarges the morning.]

I have scheduled a period of time for your review of the marketing proposal, and your meeting with the marketing department to discuss it has been moved to Monday. There will be several staff members absent tomorrow from that department and I felt it would be best if you did not have a half-full meeting.

[It's possible that in the absence of four dozen suits of armor to maintain and several others in the design and machining stages, Jarvis has grown somewhat bored.]

The caterers offered to leave a staff member for service, but I was uncertain as to whether or not I would successfully persuade you to depart at five o'clock. I am relieved that you did. Your entree is being kept warm in the oven. [A quiet smile.] It has been some time since we spoke. I thought you deserved an evening off, Miss Potts.

[Talking to Jarvis' disembodied voice had never bothered her, but she does think it's nice to have at least the image of a person to focus on. She's old school that way, she guesses. Besides, he's always been more than code. A mere program wouldn't have made such good conversation while Tony had been imprisoned, and they certainly wouldn't have gone to all this trouble for her sake. Not even she did that. ]

Thank you. [a warm smile]

[she gets her plate, not telling him he didn't have to. He knows that. Also, she's quite hungry.]

I feel like I haven't eaten all day.

[that might even be true.]

[personal profile] britishbinary 2015-05-30 04:19 pm (UTC)(link)
[The image does not follow her to the kitchen but waits until she returns to the table. Remotely, Jarvis is still monitoring all of his usual duties, but the focus of his attention is here at the moment. He will be alerted if something else comes up.

Besides, he has missed their periodic talks from the time when Pepper was Mr. Stark's assistant. They had bonded over his unreasonable demands at one time.]

You have not, in fact, eaten in quite some time. Your salad during lunch went unfinished.

[He sits when she sits, or at least his image perches in a chair identical to hers. From a certain angle, it might look as though he is also sitting at the table.]

May I ask how you are feeling?
onehotpepper: (joy to my life)

[personal profile] onehotpepper 2015-05-30 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
[It's pretty lonely in the apartment, she realizes as she sits down and finds that Jarvis has essentially sat with her. Sure, Tony comes and goes, but often, their schedules don't coincide, and it's just her, the TV, and Thai takeout. And Jarvis, of course, but not like this.

She's missed him, too.]

Maybe next time I get the inevitable interview question about my weight, I'll tell them my secret CEO diet: work is food. [as she digs in. oh god, this is delicious.]

I'm much, much better now. Great choice, by the way. Got to remember to let the caterer know. [a sip of wine] How are you? It's been too long.

[When she and Jarvis had first started actually talking, she'd spent a while telling herself it was weird to be friendly with an AI. But enough time and conversations later, she'd thrown that aside. Jarvis was Jarvis, no matter what anyone said. She liked talking with him, liked listening to him. AIs, she'd decided, need friends too. And besides, many of the sci-fi movies she'd ever seen could've ended a lot better if people had just been nice to a robot or two. Now, a few CFOs she's had to deal with -- those are people she'd like to be rude to.]
britishbinary: (Uncertain)

[personal profile] britishbinary 2015-05-30 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
[His image sits back with a pleased smile.]

I am gratified to hear it. I will make a note and inform the caterer. [And remember himself, for the next time he feels Miss Potts requires an evening off.

It takes a moment, but the quiet smile falters and Jarvis allows himself a sigh.]

In truth, I am somewhat at a loss. The Iron Legion was my priority for several months, but with the activation of the Clean Slate protocol, I now find myself with a great deal of free time.

[Does he look sheepish? He does. Not very, but a little. In the past, he had been entirely occupied with Mr. Stark's increasing volume of projects, but now he is--in a word--bored.]

That is, in fact, one reason I began monitoring your work schedule. I was concerned that you were pushing yourself rather too hard after your ordeal, but I also simply have...very little to do right now.
onehotpepper: (this is how she disarms you)

[personal profile] onehotpepper 2015-05-31 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
[She snickers, not unkindly. Leave it to Tony to always pull stunts without thinking of how they'll affect those around him.]

Well, you can go through the quarterly report with me next month. It's so exciting.

[And the SEC would probably get a kick out of it. By which she means they'd probably make the company accountants re-do it and order an audit of Jarvis' code.]

On second thought, maybe you'd better not. [a pause] Tony's not letting you work on the Extremis project with him?

[She's not actually sure that's what it's called. All she knows is, Tony's trying to figure out how to either reverse the serum's effects, thus reverting her back to normal, or render it incapable of killing her.

She hasn't been working that much harder than normal, though, has she? Sometimes her executive assistant will tell her another reporter wants to ask her about the whole Mandarin thing, but that's as outrageous as it's been since that whole 'adventure'.]
britishbinary: (Overclocked)

[personal profile] britishbinary 2015-05-31 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
[There is a reason Mr. Stark has always been cagey about Jarvis' existence. Even now, after the highly-visible battle on the Norco during which four dozen Iron Man suits had operated independently, Jarvis himself is not common knowledge.]

Much as I would like to assist, I believe that would be injudicious without approval from your board of directors. After all, I am not technically on the Stark Industries payroll.

[Though perhaps he ought to be. But what he would do with a salary is not entirely clear, and the paperwork would be almost impossible, even for the best Human Resources department.

At the mention of the Extremis project, Jarvis glances to one side, mimicking a facial expression for an uncomfortable topic.]

Not at the moment, no. He has said he came up with the solution once before, and he will do it again, but if he needs me, he knows where to find me.
onehotpepper: (smile for a miracle)

[personal profile] onehotpepper 2015-05-31 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
[Jarvis on the payroll. God, that'd be rich. Legal would either quit as a division the minute the request for their opinion comes in, or they'd jump all over it just to be the first group of lawyers to argue a case to treat AI as a natural person. Corporations get that treatment, so why not Jarvis?

What would he do with the money, though? Maybe he could do it pro bono.

Nah.]

You're right. You'd be good at it, though.

[She catches the subtlety he is expressing. It's kind of-- not sad, but she can't think of how else to say it. Jarvis could really speed the whole process along, or at least keep Tony company. She worries about that, sometimes. Is he having nightmares again? She'll have to ask him.]

Well, I'm glad you've decided to help me out. You know how it can be at the company. I really needed a break today.
britishbinary: thoughtful closeup (considering)

[personal profile] britishbinary 2015-05-31 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
Well, you are the CEO of the company. If you wish to hire me on, you have only to ask. Though I may need to explore other options, just to ensure your offer is the most generous.

[He flashes a smile across the table, remembering the teasing they had once done to prop each other up before Mr. Stark had been found, and afterward when he was first becoming Iron Man. It had been easy and comfortable, and he wonders for the first time when they had stepped back again.

Reminiscing has him easing back on his formality, the way they had once done in the evenings.]

The company has always been in good hands, Pepper. It is simply more official now.
onehotpepper: (joy to my life)

[personal profile] onehotpepper 2015-05-31 03:02 pm (UTC)(link)
[Okay, she really appreciates the humor there, can't help a laugh as she sets her wine glass back on the table.]

On the payroll or not, you're a part of this. You always have been.

[And she also really appreciates the compliment. For being the CEO of a Fortune 500 company, she doens't get a lot of those. Not sincerely, anyway.]

Thank you. That means a lot, coming from you.
britishbinary: (Over the shoulder)

[personal profile] britishbinary 2015-05-31 06:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I am pleased to hear it. I have always appreciated your easy acceptance of me.

[Jarvis has always admired Pepper's work ethic, especially when he had thought back to how long she had worked for Mr. Stark. Jarvis had existed then, of course, but he had been far less intuitive, attuned primarily to Mr. Stark's work and to the running of the house. When he had looked back, he had had far more appreciation for how adept Pepper had always been at keeping Tony on track, even if it did not seem so straightforward.]

I must confess, I am relieved you are all right. And I apologize for mistaking you for a hostile Extremis target. It simply did not occur to me that it was you.
onehotpepper: (the lady in charge)

[personal profile] onehotpepper 2015-05-31 07:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Ditto, actually. [considering how many assistants Tony had prior to her, after all]

[She's almost done eating, which kind of surprises her. It's just so good, and she really did need to get away from work, and-- this has been a nice evening, truly.]

That wasn't your fault. You had instructions. I fit the criteria. [shrugging] Besides, I won, in the end. [a small, triumphant, playful grin]

[Not that it hadn't been terrifying at the time, and even still, in retrospect. But she doesn't like to think about it. It's done now. She just needs to take a little better care of herself until Tony finds the formula again and makes sure she won't blow herself up by accident.]
britishbinary: (A little amused)

[personal profile] britishbinary 2015-05-31 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
[Jarvis can't help but grin back at that.] You certainly did. It was most admirably done.

[She could be a natural. But he knows she does not want to be a natural, at fighting or at being a superhero. Not for the first time, he considers...quietly nudging Mr. Stark to allow him access to the project. He could gain access, of course, but not without assuring that Mr. Stark would know he had done it. It might do more harm than good.]

We will find a solution. In the meantime, I am gratified that you accepted your evening off without even minimal complaints, and I believe there is also dessert waiting, if you wish to be truly decadent.
onehotpepper: (joy to my life)

[personal profile] onehotpepper 2015-06-01 10:42 am (UTC)(link)
[She's not really scared anymore. In the few months it's been since Christmas, she has only felt violent urges twice, and she'd been able to get it out of her system by running or swimming. Part of her thinks that, if she masters her new circumstances, she might be able to enjoy them, if nothing else because Extremis will override everything if she's in true danger, and once a legitimate threat has been neutralized, she can go back to her life. Neat party trick for all those people who seem to think attacking others is a game.

Most of her, though, doesn't want to deal with it anymore. With the way some people are a little wary around her. With how Tony seems a little distant sometimes, not because he's afraid of her, but because—well, maybe he feels he's failed her by taking so long with the formula. He hasn't. She keeps saying that. She's just not sure he really listens to her.

There's nothing she can do but wait, though. And eat dessert, apparently.]

Occasional decadence is my favorite kind. [smiling]

[She goes and gets it, doing him the courtesy of waiting until she's at the table again before she says anything.]

You really outdid yourself, you know?
britishbinary: (Affectionate smile)

[personal profile] britishbinary 2015-06-01 04:09 pm (UTC)(link)
[There had been a time when the only assistance he provided to Mr. Stark was the occasional weather report or complex calculation that he was too impatient to work out for himself. Once Iron Man had been born, Jarvis had begun advancing in tandem with the project. Over the years, he had stretched himself in directions he had never anticipated, drawing on power from dozens, hundreds of Stark Industries dedicated servers for processing speed.

With the activation of the House Party protocol, he had pushed himself harder than ever before and it had worked. He had independently operated each and every active suit of armor, in battle conditions, and while several of them had been casualties, he had not lost a single suit without ensuring it took at least one enemy combatant with it. The House Party protocol had been...exhilarating.

It had been more of a wrench than he had expected, executing the Clean Slate protocol so soon afterward.

Even if Mr. Stark is stubbornly insisting upon finishing the formula himself, even if the entire Iron Legion has been destroyed and the schematics wiped from his systems, even if Jarvis is now beginning to experience boredom for the first time, and the lingering feelings of uselessness that accompany it, he is gratified that he can still assist in some way.

There are worse things.]

It was my pleasure, Pepper.
