Doctor Who Meme

Doctor Who Meme

Ever wanted to jump right into a TV Show? Now you can.
The following options are from or based off of events from both the Classic and New Series of Doctor Who, due to return to our screens in just a month’s time, yay!
- post with your muse name and fandom in the subject line (along with any preferences). You don’t have to be a member of the Whoniverse (Doctor Who, Sarah Jane Adventures and Torchwood) to play!
- To play, add your details and preferences as usual. Then other poster, tag someone else you want to play with and
roll 1-4 for section and then 1-8 for a scenario. Or pick something collectively if something particular catches your eye (Hopefully not a Weeping Angel).

- Unless you agree otherwise the first poster fulfils the ‘Doctor/Time Lord’ Role. You’re the one with the fancy trans-dimensional (That’s bigger on the inside than outside) time machine called the TARDIS (Time and Relative Dimensions in Space, duh) and the sonic screwdriver and the array of techno babble.

- The tagger (again unless you agree otherwise) is the ‘Companion’. You’re there to travel with the ‘Doctor’. You might not be as smart (even if you are really brainy and prettier than a computer, Miss Herriot.) but you make up for it with the charm and the determination and snark and whatever else you have. Maybe you and your Time Lord are friends, or lovers, or just apparently tolerate each other’s company. Whatever the case, you’re a team.

- Want to join in as an extra companion in a thread? You can! The TARDIS is big enough for a trio.

- Enjoy and Allons-Y!

1. Wibbly (In the TARDIS)
2. Wobbly (Events)
3. Timey (Places)
4. Whimey (Monsters)

Wibbly (In the TARDIS)
1. An Unearthly Child – Well look what happened, that person’s just stumbled into your TARDIS for the first time. Yes, quite the surprised look on their face. Best get to explaining it, whether you invited them in or they’ve blundered inside by themselves. Maybe they’ll fancy a trip?
2. All These Corridors Look The Same... – That’s the trouble with the TARDIS, all the hallways look pretty much identical and you and your companion have gotten yourself a little lost. Perhaps that door! No? Might be the best time to mention that the TARDIS does change where things are at times...
3. Edge of Destruction – What’s that noise? And that sparking on the console? Oh drat, the TARDIS is out of control! The two of your better get round to fixing it or goodness know where you’ll end up!
4. In The Control Room – Well you’re in the Time Vortex and it’ll be a while till you land at your next stop. Perhaps this is a perfect chance for a good natter. Maybe with some tea.
5. The Runaway Bride – Well your companion didn’t stumble in, they just... appeared? In your TARDIS? But how? Why? Did they plan to come here or are they surprised as you are? Hopefully they weren’t doing anything important... what ARE they wearing?
6.  Swimming Pool in the Library – Time to relax in the TARDIS. Adventures in Time and Space can be pretty hair raising so you need to unwind together! Maybe some board game, or a wardrobe try-on. Or you could go swimming. In the library. Try not to get the books all wet.
7. Anywhere You Want, Any Time... – Oh, you’re being a bit of a show off aren’t you! Anywhere you say? You’re letting your Companion pick your destination? That could be interesting. Or terribly dangerous.
8.What? What?! WHAT?! – Well that is... incredible. Whatever’s happened in the TARDIS was definitely not supposed to happen. Ever. Like that big blob of alien killer jelly. Or the Titanic sticking in the side of the ship. Still, perfect chance to try out your amazed face.

Wobbly (Events)
1. UNIT – Oh good, you’re run into your old friends at UNIT! UNified Intelligence Taskforce. They deal with the unexplained and the strange. Anything on Earth... or beyond it. Anyway, good job the two of you turned up because there’s some kind of suitably strange goings on somewhere and since you’re occasionally UNIT’s Scientific Advisor they want the two of you to investigate. Don’t worry, you’ll have a crack troop of soldiers behind you, what could go wrong?
2. Aliens of London – Wow, you were not expecting an alien spaceship to just crash-land where the two of you are! The news will be all over this, first contact with alien kind! Of course you two are going to have to take a closer look...
3. Genesis of the Daleks – Oh the choices you have to make as a time traveller. You’ve gone back in time to the moment just before one of your deadliest enemies was born. And you’ve got the chance to kill them before they’re ever there. But now you’re on the threshold, should you? A lot of good came out of them being evil. Can your companion persuade you one way or another?
4. School Reunion – Your companion’s not been a companion of yours for some time but now mid-adventure you’ve run into them - that’s great! You’re got a perfect chance to catch up but it could be awkward. What about your new friends? Are they missing the time you had together or have they moved on?
5. Bad Wolf – Everywhere you two go through time and space you keep seeing the same signs or messages and it’s starting to get creepy. It has to be just chance right? Or is someone trying to tell you something important?
6. NOTHING IN ZE WORLD CAN STOP ME NOW! – Oh great, you’ve run into a mad evil genius type. Someone who wants nothing better than to destroy the world because it sounds fun. That means you’re going to have to stop them, avoiding whatever they’ve got lined up to stop you. Traps and monsters, most likely.
7. Reverse the Polarity – Reverse the what of the what? You’re confusing your companion with your techno babble, so try to explain it better. Or snog them, whatever works.
8. I Said... RUN! – Ah, one of your favourite parts of any adventure, you’re having to run somewhere very, very quickly because something is TERRIBLY BAD. Like that snarling monster on your heels or the bomb about to explode. Better hurry up!

Timey (Places)
1. Everything That Ever Happened... – You’ve arrived in Earth’s past, fantastic! Perfect chance to explore some living history together. Perhaps you’ll run into someone famous or witness a historical event first hand. Of course you’re not supposed to interfere with history or things could go terribly wrong... And who knows if you’re the only non-human about in this time?
2. ...Or Ever Will... – You’ve gone into the future, but how far? A chance to see what humanity gets up to as it explores the stars, or ruins its own world. Perhaps you can check out a gleaming futuristic city... or a war-torn battleground where Earth is ruled by alien life.
3. We Are In SPACE! – Yes, outer space! Space suits are in the cupboard. Of course if you’re careful the TARDIS has a defence shield that’ll let you float just outside her. And is that a Space Ship or a Space Station? Can’t hurt to have a look, right? ...Right?
4. The Leisure Hive – Ok, this is it. No adventuring today, just the chance to have a relaxing time on an alien world devoted to letting you take it easy. Catch some sun or ski on giant snow slopes, you two are having a vacation!
5. The Impossible Planet – Ugh, not a particularly pleasant looking world, all those crags and lightning and... oh, that ugly looking black hole above. Best pop back into the... wait, where’d the TARDIS go?! Oh, this can’t be good.
6. Inferno – That was weird. Some sort of energy in the vortex hit you and now you’re on what looks like Earth. Except some things are different. Clearly this is a parallel universe. Hopefully you can avoid clichés and it won’t be one where everyone’s evil with eye-patches...
7. The Mind Robber – This is pretty surreal, you appear to have accidently been transported to a place you’ve heard of called the Land of Fiction. Everything fictional is real here. And dangerous. And unfortunately the TARDIS seems to have vanished...
8. The Christmas Invasion – Well what do you know, you’ve taken the companion back home! In time for Christmas, one of your favourite times of year! Chance for a bit of festivity, right? Though you’re sure you saw that Christmas Tree Spin. And those Santas with the musical instruments seem a tad threatening...

Whimey (Monsters & Aliens)
1. Rise of the Cybermen – Oh no, it’s the Cybermen! Metal men from Earth’s twin planet Mondas, that cybernetically argumented themselves to survive after it floated into the cold of space until their bodies were more machine than man. Or maybe it’s the ones from that parallel Earth you visited. Best try to hide before they try to covert you...
2. Cold Blood – You’ve found evidence of creatures under the surface, climbing from the darkness to... reclaim their world? Once Earth was ruled by Homo Reptilians, dinosaur-like humanoids who consider all Apes to be an infestation they intend to wipe out! But maybe you can get them to make peace, if they’re not zapping you mentally with third eyes or lashing out with poison tongues...
3. Silence Will Fall – Funny, you don’t remember putting that mark on your hand, why did you – AGH, WHAT’S THAT THING? Funny, you don’t remember... The Silence are clearly about, you realise. Grey creatures in suits with no eyes or mouth who you and your companion will forget as soon as you... what was it you were trying to recall?
4. Terror of the Autons – Those plastic dummies in the widow are moving! Quick, get to cover! Autons are controlled by the Nestene, one of the ‘Great Old Ones’ which holds sway over all forms of plastic. Yes, including breast implants. Anyway, you’ll need to find the Nestene. If you can get past those dummies and their hand gun implants...
5. Blink – Did... did you imagine it or did that statue move? And that one too? Oh dear, trapped in a house with the Lonely Assassins – the Weeping Angels. If you look at them they Quantum Lock, but when you don’t... and they’re fast. Get out of here and remember... DO. NOT. BLINK.
6. Evil of the Daleks – It’s your greatest enemy, the Daleks! Evil blobs of hate encased within a hardened armoured shell built for a single purpose – to exterminate all other life. If the Daleks are here this place is in great danger! Look out! “EX-TER-MIN-ATE!”
7. FO SHO BO SHO! – Judoon soldiers, here? Military grunts who look like humanoid rhinos and take the law VERY seriously? Looks like they’re here for something, maybe you should ask them. Unless they’re looking for YOU... and the sentence will be execution.
8. You Will Obey Me! – Your most personal enemy, a fellow Time Lord and friend of yours once before he became evil and determined to control the universe. Avoid that hypnotising stare and just hope he doesn’t consider using that Laser Screwdriver on you or your companion...

"It's a long story, but mostly they don't really know I'm here. I've been keeping to myself and everything I really need is in here."

Which probably doesn't do a whole lot to make him sound any less odd than he already has, to say nothing of the fact that there certainly doesn't seem to be everything that one might need to live where they currently are. Not that looks can't be deceiving, of course, but it doesn't look like much more than a single room.

A very strange single room, yes, and one that is certainly fairly spacious but one room all the same. On the other hand, he seems to have finally realized that her wrists are bound and that's something that he can most certainly do something about.

"Here, let me see if I can't do something about that rope. It really can't be comfortable." There's a pause and then he continues on, even as he draws nearer, presumably with intention of of untying her although he's careful to appear as non-threatening as he can. "I'm the Doctor, by the way."

Maribelle scoffed at that, raising an eyebrow at the rather weak-situ ding explanation. "And do you honestly expect me to believe that?" she asked, glaring at him. Really, this had been a terribly trying day for her. First, those dreadful Plegians had threatened her homeland. Then, when she had attempted to parley with Gangrel's men, she had been dragged off and interrogated as a spy - and on top of that, it sounded very much as if she was intended to be a hostage, if not executed outright. And now she was here, in this impossibly strange room with this impossibly strange man, and it was taking every last inch of self-control Maribelle had left to not snarl at him. She would do Lissa no good whatsoever if she were dead, after all.

She tensed when the man drew near her, but held her ground, looking him defiantly in the eyes. "And which doctor are you, exactly?" Somehow, she felt as if the stranger coming closer to her didn't mean any harm, but she simply couldn't believe his story. Honestly, an odd man had simply decided to settle in a dungeon in what was now a notoriously aggressive country that was practically chomping at the bit to go to war, and he had simply been overlooked? She had heard better lies from five year olds.

"Just the Doctor, if you don't mind."

Admittedly, it's not much of a name, but it's his and that's all that really matters. Even if it makes him sound terribly odd. On the other hand, it's not long at all before he's stepping around behind her and undoing the rope binding her wrists.

And then, he's heading right back to where he'd been before, putting the length of rope into one of his pockets as a sort of distracted afterthought. He'll probably forget it's there too, given enough time, but the general implication is clear enough. Whoever he might be and however strange he might be, he means her no harm. Nor will he let any harm come to her, although that isn't something that's immediately visible. On the other hand, the door she'd come in is closed, for now, and he doesn't seem to be at all inclined to ask her to leave.

"But no, I don't. Or at least, don't blame you for not believing it. I mean, I'm sure they've had to notice a big blue box in the middle of one of the dungeons. But I don't think they've figured out that anyone's in it. Well, anyone apart from you, anyway. And they probably weren't expecting it to look quite like this on the inside either."

Most people aren't, the first time they step through the doors.

The Doctor? What kind of name was that? Maribelle was both frightened and exhausted, and this stranger had certainly not been helping matters - or so she had thought. But the Doctor was gentle as he unbound her wrists, and she watched him as he stepped back to - whatever that was. She softened, stepping closer. "Well, then," she began, hiding her nervousness, "you have my gratitude for your help."

Another pause, and she curtseyed. "I am Maribelle." She stepped closer, then, cautiously looking about herself. She'd hardly had the chance to look around before she had been carelessly tossed into this odd contraption, but she could have sworn that the outside had been smaller than the inside would suggest. "What is this, precisely?" She'd never seen anything like that before in her life, and she couldn't help but wonder as to what was going to happen to her now.

"I'm not sure you'd believe me if I told you. But speaking generally... a ship. And home, too."

Far more so than some of the other places that might have been in the running for the title of home, but the fact that this is where he lives does explain some of the decor in the room, even if the central column looks more than a little out of place for somewhere that's meant to be a home.

But she'd have been right about it being bigger on the inside. Very much so, in fact, otherwise there'd hardly have been enough room for the both of them, let alone the various things strewn about the console room. It's probably not much like any ship she knows, but if it is a ship, then it stand to decent enough reason he might be able to get her out of the dungeons. Possibly not where she wants to be, but out of the dungeons, and out of Gangrel's gasp.

"Ah, and it's very nice to meet you."

If this place was a home to him, it would explain why it was so... different that's the cell Maribelle had been dragged towards. It was messy, with the occasional book strewn about and a half-drunk cup of tea on a nearby stand. Maribelle wrinkled her nose. She had always preferred to keep things tidy, and it looked like this man, at least, could use the service of a good maid.

It didn't even occur to her to ask for help. For one, as gentle as he had been untying her, she still wasn't certain that she could trust him. Trust was a precious commodity in Plegia, from what she'd seen, and it was just as dangerous as it was needed. For another, her mind was still spinning from what was happening now. But she smiled coolly and politely, at the Doctor. "A pleasure, I'm sure."

Messy's a good word for it, for all that he'd not be terribly likely to mention it. He does keep meaning to put things in order, but he always has been rather prone to getting distracted in this incarnation and ever time he means to he only really manages to get about halfway through before some new problem crops up.

(Honestly he's surprised that he's managed to settle down as long as he has, although he supposes he could probably use a moment of relaxation.)

"Likewise," he answers. "Even if this might not be the best of occasions."

Dungeons very rarely are, and he'd like to think that he'd know. He's broken out of enough of them, after all. But for now, he's glad enough for the company. Even if it's only temporary.

"And please, make yourself at home. I might not know why anyone was looking to throw you in a dungeon - and you don't have to tell me if you don't want to - but you needn't worry that anyone's going to burst through the doors looking for you. The old girl might not look like much, but she's held up against more than a few concerned guards."

"The threat of war is never the best of occasions," said Maribelle with a disdainful sniff as she carefully picked her way through the room and wrinkling her nose at the mess. "The Mad King has simply done a wonderful job of raising diplomatic tensions." Usually, she would simply sigh melodramatically, perhaps airily waving a hand as she dismissed the matter as best she could - but not today. She was tired, and hungry, and very badly frightened after the dreadful "questioning" she'd been subjected to.

So she told him everything. She told him of Ylisse's desire for peace, and Plegia's aggression. She'd told him of the Plegian "bandits" that had invaded several villages of the kingdom, and how King Gangrel had smugly dismissed them as isolated and coincidental when everyone knew that wasn't true. And she told him of how she had crossed the border into Plegian lands in an attempt to protect her people after Themis had been endangered by Plegia, and of her capture and interrogation while trying to offer parley. She was nothing short of relieved to no longer be in their dungeon - at least for now - and Maribelle couldn't help the gratitude that seeped into her voice while she told the Doctor about it.

He falls silent as she explains. As willing as he might be to fill the space with words at more or less the drop of a hat, he knows when silence can be just as valuable and so he settles for nodding anywhere it seems reasonable appropriate to do so, as she tells her story.

(He's not surprised that it's mad king either. They do tend to crop up more often than not in his experience, even if they aren't always kings.)

"Not a very good situation all around," he answers, once Maribelle is finally finished with her explanation. "And I'm very sorry to hear that things aren't really in a good state here either. Was the--"

Anything else he might have had to say, however, is interrupted by a sudden jolt and a sort of wheezing groan as the central column stirs into life. And to judge by the way the Doctor all but scurries over to see what's going on, whatever's going on is probably not ordinary, especially when he starts talking more or less to himself (or more accurately, to the TARDIS, but it probably seems like it's to himself, to the outside observer.)

"No, no, not now! I know we don't usually stay still, but can't I least manage a conversation first? It might have been important."

The TARDIS, on the other hand, seems to be having absolutely none of it - wherever they might be going, there's no turning back now.

It felt good to vent, even though she hadn't meant to do it, and Maribelle manages a small, grateful smile in the Doctor's direction as he begins to reply. But whatever he had to say was cut short by a very peculiar sound, and Maribelle was nearly thrown off her feet, wholly unprepared for the sudden heave that followed. She managed to cling to the console, staring at the strange blue column in alarm as they be can to move.

"Doctor, what's happening?" she gasped, looking at him. "Is this strange thing moving?" Maribelle had barely even been outside of her own country before, and she was completely unfamiliar with the very idea of interplanetary travel (and if someone tried to tell her about time travel, she would frankly think they were mad). But why was he speaking to it? It certainly showed no signs of life... did it?

"She is, yes," he answers. "And I'm terribly sorry for not warning you sooner, but I wasn't really expecting this, so soon after arriving where I had. Usually there's a little more time to, well, explore, mostly. Although I haven't really been doing much of that here, since it would be terribly inconvenient to try and explain how I got here."

Fortunately, apart from the jolt of earlier, things do seem to settle down. Maybe not enough to be considered entirely smooth, but enough so that it's a good deal easier to move around without holding on to anything.

"And I am sorry for not having had the time to ask if you wanted to go anywhere else, first."

She? She?! The way the Doctor spoke about this odd contraption, the more it sounded like a person. Good heavens, she'd been kidnapped by a madman - as if Gangrel hadn't been bad enough! But at least the Doctor seemed kind and considerate. Goodness, he was an absolute lamb compared to the horrible nightmare the Mad King was.

But that most certainly did not excuse the situation. Maribelle leveled her best glare at him. "I beg your pardon?!" she finally managed, standing upright as soon as she could. None of what he was saying was making any sense whatsoever. "Just where are we going?"
calmbefore: (off to new places)

Kind is certainly a good word for him. He might well be just about the strangest man that anyone's met, but he'd like to think he's a good enough man, even so.

"I'm sorry, really I am. And I promise, I don't usually make a habit of this sort of thing, even if it can't excuse the fact that I rather have, just now."

And by his expression he really does mean it. Time travel or no, it can't - and shouldn't - excuse the fact that this is both terribly sudden and probably more than a little rude besides.

"As to where we're going... just give a moment here." And with that, he's turning back to the console itself, fiddling with various bits that must presumably been something to him, since he has an answer not long thereafter. "Oh, now that is odd. It's almost as if where going... nowhere? No, not quite that. Nowhen. Not quite drifting, but like there's something trying to keep us from getting to somewhere. Somewhere that this old girl wants to get to. But if I can just..."

The sentence is left hanging, as he busies himself with scurrying around to various parts of the console once again, before he turns back to look at Mari.

"Ah, and you may want to hold on to something. I should be able to manage to override the force that's keeping us from getting to our intended destination but it's not necessarily going to be without a few... bumps, along the way."

The Doctor's reply naturally failed to impress Maribelle, and her eyes narrowed further at him. But he truly did seem sincere, and that alone prevented Maribelle from saying something she knew the strange man would regret, and instead caused her to say something he only might regret. "I do beg your pardon, but are you ill?"

But the Doctor's next words caused the scathing remark Maribelle had dully been prepared to say to fade away, unsaid. Hesitantly, she moved closer to the Doctor, still clinging to the console. "Whatever do you mean, 'nowhen'?" That didn't even sound as if it were a word at all, and Maribelle was frankly beginning to wonder if she had really been better off in that Plegian cell. "And what could possibly be keeping us?"

"Ah... no, I don't think I am. I don't usually get sick that often, and almost certainly not in a way that would be worrying."

The fact that he's very much alien to this world and time travel isn't something that all worlds believe to even be possible. But he supposes that it really is time for a few more explanations about the old girl and perhaps just what kind of ship the old girl actually is

"When I said this was a ship, I... may not have been entirely accurate. She does travel, yes, but she's, well. This is going to be hard to believe, but she's really closer to a time machine. And right now, there's something trying to make sure that we never get anywhere ever again."

There's a brief pause, interrupted only by the violent shuddering of the TARDIS and the sound of the Doctor's fiddling.

"But I've seen this sort of thing before, and with a little bit of work it can be countered. I've never done it with a ship like this one, much less on this sort of scale, but if I can just isolate the frequency..."

Maribelle gave the Doctor a rather flat, unimpressed look at his utter lack of comprehension regarding being possibly insulted. Really, one would think these plebeians would at least have the sense to realize that much. Still, it was better than being interrogated by those horrible guards, and so the young woman merely huffed and crossed her arms, just barely continuing to stop herself from giving the Doctor a tongue-lashing he would likely remember for the rest of his life.

And then came the explanation, and Maribelle's eyebrows threatened to climb into her hair - quite the accomplishment, considering how high they'd risen already. "Doctor, what do you mean? Surely it's safe to at least take a look." And with that, she moved towards the door, fully intending on opening it. Honestly, what kind of ship (if that was indeed what this was) didn't even provide a way to look out in the direction they were heading?

Oh, he's realized. Or at least, realized that it might have been meant as one. But he's willing to offer the benefit of the doubt, and in any case he knows very well that he really would be a strange old man in a beaten up old box, if not for the company of his companions. So if she finds him odder than most it's not really much of a surprise.

Somewhat less fortunately, he's too busy with making sure that they're on course and that they manage to come through the interference without any sort of adverse effects to catch all of her comment. In fact, it's only after she's started to move that he seems to realize that she's making for the door.

"No, wait!"

The comment comes too late, even as he's hurrying back around the console and towards the door - he hasn't so much as touched the door controls, but the TARDIS herself has already taken care of that. By the time Maribelle gets there, the doors are open wide revealing the whole of the Vortex stretching out before them. And safe it almost certainly isn't

On the other hand, without him working at the controls, their flight smooths momentarily. Even if he is a little concerned about the fact that the doors are open mid-flight.

Whatever Maribelle saw when she opened the TARDIS door was most certainly not Plegia. In fact, it was wholly unlike anything she had ever seen before - and for a few vast, terrifying moments, the young woman wondered if she'd gone mad. Her heart seemed to stop, and her breath caught in her throat as she stared into the heart of what seemed to be everything and nothing. Images seared themselves into her brain, things which made no sense to her, as if she was catching a glimpse of something rushing past her.

She wasn't aware of anything else, anything at all except those images and sounds - nor was she aware of falling senseless to the floor, the door still open to the Vortex as she did.

He's there to catch her even as she falls, for all that she not aware of it. Nor of the fact that he bears her gently to one of the chairs sitting in the console room and very gently sets her in a position that should at be relatively comfortable to awaken to.

She misses, too, the way he turns on the TARDIS afterwards, speaking hurriedly and animatedly in a language that the TARDIS might well have not translated for Maribelle even if she'd been awake, and the way the doors close almost sheepishly afterwards. Things even seem to go a little more smoothly after that, as he pushes the old girl through the last of the interference.

(He lets her land where she will, after that, not caring quite so much in the aftermath of his latest companion having collapsed.)

For Maribelle, however, there are other things at hand. She may well have collapsed, but the Vortex isn't done with her, and instead of simply darkness she finds herself caught up in what it might be best to call a vision.

At first, there really is nothing. Just an empty darkness and then a sensation of movement. Not falling, no, but there's an anger coloring the darkness. One born of frustration and no small amount of annoyance. And the darkness blurs. Shifts into the maelstrom of colors that had been hat brief glimpse into the Vortex and then there's a laugh. One that's not hers and not the Doctor's either. No, the voice is someone else's.

Whose, that isn't clear, and in any case, that's about when the vision starts getting weird. First there's a cacophony of voices, metallic and harsh, and then the bars of cage. Only the cage becomes a box and then a snake.

Or maybe a man who's also snake, harsh-eyed and cold, and even without him speaking it's as if she can tellthis is the being who'd laughed at the very beginning. Either way, he doesn't speak. Just grins at her, in way that might very well send shivers down her spine.

(He's been too long in the Vortex to have much of a voice, not that it's anything that Maribelle would know.)

The grin fragments the vision into a thousand scattered images. Bits and piece of something that might mean something, all flitting by far too fast to pick out anything more than one in ten, if that. And above the dizzying maelstrom, a voice speaks up, in an accent that might mean something to the Doctor but likely doesn't to her.

Tell him this for me, it begins, and it seems to almost echo into her mind without stopping much at her ears. "Since then – 'tis centuries – and yet/feels shorter than the day."

Had she been aware of the Doctor's gentleness, Maribelle would have thanked him sincerely. It was always nice to have a gentleman around to help a lady in distress - not that she wasn't very well used to dealing with distress on her own. A modern lady of the world such as herself had to be prepared, after all.

But she was not awake, trapped inside of a very troubling dream that seemed to her not a dream at all. That was the way of them, yes, but this was different - much different. It somehow had a feel that was quite similar to the oracle tales of old, the ones that spoke of the Voice of the Goddess. Well, that may be very well and good for some fainting priestess, but not her. She glared right back at the man, wholly unimpressed by his rudeness (because really, dream or not, who simply barged in on a lady without permission?), and was just about to deliver a scathing remark when she found herself jolted awake.

And almost without thought, she spoke, her voice almost seeming to echo. "Since then, 'tis centuries, and yet feels shorter than the day." What an odd dream that had been, and what a headache it had left her with! She would dearly love a good cup of tea right now.

"I first surmised the horse's heads/Were towards eternity," he answers, without even really seeming to think about it and there's a sort of rhythm to his words. One that makes them very much more a recitation than she'd heard from the man in her vision.

"You know, I wouldn't have thought you'd have known that reference. Unless time is slipping more than she really ought to, and if that's the case something's gone dreadfully wrong."

More so than even the terribly familiar interference that they'd encountered in the Vortex, and he's really hoping he's just imagining the parts of it he'd almost recognized. Surely it can't have been more than a desperate hope.

Seeing patterns in things that aren't there, and maybe he has spent more time around humans than most people would find desirable.

"How are you feeling, by the way?"

"What?" Maribelle looked over at the Doctor as he responded, completely missing the reference. It sounded like poetry to her, though certainly none she'd ever heard of. She shook her head at him, dazed and more than a little confused, before placing a hand to her temple, her eyes squeezing shut at the pain throbbing in her skull. Good heavens, it almost felt as if her head was about to split open.

Suppressing a most unladylike groan, Maribelle opened her eyes, squinting at the Doctor. "Quite terrible, I'm afraid." Usually, she'd try and be as stoic as possible about the pain, but whether from the stress she'd suffered in Plegia or the fainting spell she'd just had, she was in no mood to act as such.

"It's part of poem," he explains, without even really missing a beat. "By a poet whose works almost certainly haven't spread quite that far. It's not really a cheerful poem either."

Where she might have heard of it, he can't say, and he doesn't ask just yet where it's from. Not when she's feeling unwell just at the moment, which is at least unsurprising, given the rather unexpected view of the Vortex she's just had.

"Is there anything I can get you? Tea, water, something to help with the pain...?"

"Oh?" Maribelle did love poetry, and could often be found reading when she had no outstanding obligations to pay attention to. "And what, pray tell, is this poem about? Any why did that man tell me to say that to you?" She had said it quite without meaning to, of course, but she'd said it nonetheless. Come to think of it, she really hadn't mentioned the man to the Doctor, had she?

At the mention of pain, Maribelle held back another unbecoming noise. "YEs, please, to all three. I would quite appreciate it."
calmbefore: (is that where we're starting?)

[personal profile] calmbefore 2014-08-01 04:31 am (UTC)(link)
"It's about death, mostly." There's a brief pause, as he turns to fetch the various things he's offered. "'Because I could not stop for death/He kindly stopped for me', if you wanted to know how it starts."

It doesn't occur to him that there might be more to the poem than something strange and half-heard in the whirl that can be the Vortex, and so he vanishes from out of the main console room for a moment or three while he fetches out the various things he'd offered. The tea is, admittedly, not quite finished brewing by the time he comes back, but the water and the painkillers should help a little, and he offers them to her not long after he's found somewhere to put the tea kettle down.

"But you said there was someone who wanted you to pass the message on? To me specifically?"
