The Arranged Marriage Meme

Marriage for love is a such a modern concept. In the past, marriage was
recognised as a social contract. Unions were entered into for many
reasons: to obtain property, to unite families, to carry on a bloodline,
et cetera. Whatever the reason, congratulations, you're getting married!

HOW IT WORKS:
❧ Post a comment with your character's name, canon, and any preferences.
❧ If there's a specific set of circumstances you like best, set the scene.
❧ Or leave your comment blank and let others use RNG to choose the scenario. Feel free to mix and match.
Please note the prompts below are merely suggestions and you're more than welcome to come up with your own situation.
❧ Have fun!

POSSIBLE REASONS FOR MARRIAGE:
① Station → You come from a royal, noble, or otherwise distinguished family who has chosen a suitable spouse for you.
② Feud → You are being married to put an end to the bitter enmity between your two families.
③ Economics → Your economic state and/or your station will improve through the union, though one of you may be marrying down.
④ Empire → You and your spouse are merging your businesses and/or property to create something more influential or profitable.
⑤ Tribute → You have been offered as a gift or appeasement, alternately you're the spoils of war.
⑥ Bloodline → Carrying on your distinguished family name has fallen to you and the equally well-bred spouse of your family's selection.
⑦ Disapproval → Your marriage has been arranged to keep you away from the person with whom you truly wish to be.

POSSIBLE SCENARIOS:
① First meeting → This is the very first time you're meeting your future spouse.
② Courtship → To get to know each other and encourage affection, your family has approved of you going on dates.
③ Engagement party → Be it a huge, formal affair or a small, intimate get together, you're celebrating (or pretending).
④ Wedding day → The big day!
⑤ Reception → The big party!
⑥ Wedding night → Every meme needs a smut prompt, right?
⑦ Honeymoon → Where will you go with your new spouse and what will you do there?
whitewizardgirl: (Is this really necessary?)

I hope this sort of thing is okay with you :'D 6-4

[She was a princess of Britannia, after all. Arranged marriages were fairly common amongst the royals. To be married to a prince, her half-brother at that, was expected of her, and Lelouch seemed nice enough. Still, to be marrying someone she barely even knew was nerve-racking.]

[It was the day of the wedding. Everything seemed to be moving along smoothly. She knew where she was supposed to be, she knew what she was supposed to say, she knows what she's supposed to do. All of that was well and good.]

[The problem? An important part of her dress ensemble had been misplaced and now all of the palace staff was in an uproar trying to find it. Ryou was left alone until the actual ceremony. She didn't know where the piece was that everyone was looking for. But since she had nothing better to do, she found herself wandering the halls. It was when she came upon her husband-to-be that she stopped in her wanderings.]

Sorry... we're not supposed to see each other until the actual ceremony, aren't we?

[This has to be some form of punishment. It's the only explanation.

Not for the first time, Lelouch scrubs his hand over his face and massages his temples, doing his best to quell a persistent headache. Really, marriage? Him? Weren't princesses the ones usually to be married off, not the princes? And why this bride in particular? Not to say that he has any real problem with Ryou as a person, he's not nearly so petty, but usually when one thinks of arranged marriage, there's something to be gained, whether it be land or resources or titles or a dowry— and surely his father, their father, 98th emperor of Britannia, couldn't possibly need to find an excuse to not furnish some other groom a fitting dowry. Hell, all he would have needed to do is not had a wedding at all, but this...

Lelouch breathes an aggravated sigh, drops the hand, and resumes staring intently out his chosen window, the unchanging view of the pristine chapel grounds perhaps the most infuriating sight he's ever had the misfortune of suffering. A marriage. An arranged marriage. An arranged marriage to his half-sister. Is his father trying to provoke him, prompt some kind of rebellion? If it hadn't been for his mother's much-needed intervention, he would have gone on several rampages by now. Just... why this?

The sound of quiet steps behind him brings a premature end to the sigh that had been building in his lungs, and with barely a glance over his shoulder to show his acknowledgement of the newcomer (great, it's her), he rouses himself to speak.]

Because it would be bad luck? Frankly, I think you and I are beyond that by now.

[There was a specific reason why the two of them were supposed to be married, but it was a very long and complicated explanation that most didn't care to know about. Marriages happened everyday between half-siblings, right?]

[She had already accepted that she was essentially a political tool, to be used to gain for someone else. From what she's seen of Lelouch's actions and behavior, he wasn't so complacent with the idea. Far from it. She felt that, had he more of a chance to change it, he would have refused the marriage. Yet, here they were.]

Bad luck does have a habit for following this family around...

[No, and especially not in the royal family, but then if arguments like that had held enough weight for anyone involved in this travesty to call the wedding off, neither of them would be here right now. And if that were the case...

Lelouch frowns to himself, shuts his eyes, and leans his head lightly against the glass, allowing its coolness to soothe him. It doesn't entirely work.]

Well, then, what has you wandering at this hour? Shouldn't you still be getting ready?
whitewizardgirl: (Kef are you sleepy?)

[personal profile] whitewizardgirl 2013-06-27 01:57 pm (UTC)(link)
A piece from the dress ensemble is missing. The staff is in an uproar trying to find it. They wouldn't tell me what the actual piece was and just... left me alone in the dressing room. [Which probably only made matters worse, since this might be considered a delay for the ceremony.]

Are you all right? You... look like you have a headache of some sort.

[personal profile] kingside 2013-06-28 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
[A piece missing? How convenient. The revelation is enough to prompt him to turn and face her properly, at any rate, and he casts a critical eye up and down his bride-to-be, frowning to himself.]

Odd. You look presentable enough without it, whatever it is. I wonder why they're bothering? And I'm fine, but thank you for your concern.

They said something about it being a traditional item for the women in my mother's family to wear on her wedding day. I didn't think it would matter that much since were not marrying outside of the family.[Again with the superstitions...]

[Quietly, she does approach the window, keeping her distance from Lelouch. It was the least she could do since he still didn't seem to be happy with marrying her.]

It seems so quiet outside... all things considered.

[A necklace or some other sort of jewelry then? An accessory? He's speculating largely as a means to fill the time, but he finds himself reluctantly curious anyway. Oh well, he'd find out before the day is through, more likely than not. Ugh.

He glances away again.]

What were you expecting?

[He leaves the question open-ended; it will be interesting to see how she interprets it. Maybe.]

...Today is supposed to be a happy day. Marriages are a happy occasion, right? And, I know that there are a lot of people bustling around inside of here, in the chapel. Yet, the outside world doesn't seem to have changed. [Not like there was much to change.]

It's a little childish of me, but I was expecting something a little more... dramatic. Something to point this out as a special day. But it just feels... kind of ordinary.
kingside: (Fill in the blanks. If you can.)

[personal profile] kingside 2013-06-28 05:07 am (UTC)(link)
[Not the literal and most obvious take, then. Vaguely reassuring, but Lelouch finds himself laughing quietly at her response all the same, some buried desire to not frighten the girl off just barely keeping the sound from being too dark. He has no reason to be unkind to her; she's a victim in this as much as he is.]

You're here only out of a sense of duty, the sort I imagine you deal with on a daily basis. Why should it feel any different? But I understand your meaning. [His hand clenches briefly, then relaxes.] Today.. a wedding day should be something special.

It's supposed to be a day every young girl dreams about at least once in her life. Meeting a kind and courageous prince or a knight in shining armor that rescues her, being swept off of her feet and falling in love, the two of them riding off into the sunset together, all of that romantic fairy tale nonsense. [Well, she got the prince part, at least. Lelouch just didn't seem the romantic type. Though a brief mental image of him acting in such a manner does make her shudder.]

Marriage for duty, instead of for love... It does seem a little dull in comparison. [Not that she was expected to ever marry for love, anyway. She was only a pawn in the grand scheme of things.]
kingside: (boy from Britannia)

[personal profile] kingside 2013-06-29 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
[A hopelessly idealistic romantic as well? Well, that... definitely doesn't speak well for how easily he'll be able to tolerate her later on in life. Then again, she might grow out of it... maybe.

Either way, he's looking out the window once again, doing his best not to frown. Ryou has enough on her plate without his overwhelming cynicism to bother her.]

I won't be offended if you decide to have an affair. Scandals are just as intrinsic to the royal family as marriages like this one, so I doubt it will matter.

[personal profile] whitewizardgirl 2013-06-29 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
[She never did say that she was idealistically romantic, just stating what she has seen and observed amongst the women and girls she knew. A princess like her was just a bargaining chip, as she learned at a very young age. Real princesses don't marry for love, just for politics.]

And I guess this is the part where I'm supposed to be offended by that, to say that I would never cheat on my husband, not to mention throwing in a 'how dare you suggest that' kind of statement. [But really, she doesn't know him well enough, nor does she really care if he makes that kind of statement. Scandals did happen all time in the royal family, after all.]

The only thing I can say, honestly, is that I doubt I'll be offended either if you decided to have your own affair, or even decide not touch me at all after the ceremony.
