Swords, sorcery, and romance

𝔬𝔫𝔠𝔢, further back in years than anyone alive could remember, there is a land that even time has forgotten, filled to the brim with magic and mystery both good and ill. This is where you make your home. Who you are in this kingdom - or many kingdoms - is as varied as the blades of grass that spread over this lush terrain. You could be a petulant princess, a delving dwarf, a highway man with more than a few secrets, a devoted knight, a mage of ancient spellcraft, or even an ageless elf. No matter your station, though, one thing is for certain: whatever life you lead, it's about to get a great deal more exciting. There is a war brewing, somehow, somewhere, and the peace of your homelands is at stake. You are the only one who can set things right and go on a quest to save everyone.

Still, what is an adventure without an adventure of the heart? You are not alone, and you'll find that trying times can forge ironclad emotions. Of course, you'll find that the path of love is no easier here than anywhere else, be the person you admire an arranged fiancé you're not too fond of at first, a forbidden object of desire, a traveling companion, an enemy, a lifelong friend, an ally...or another species from you entirely. Yet, in any case, this is no time for romance, is it? Only moments can be stolen, and you must set aside your feelings for the greater good.

In this time, in this place, will you get your happy ending, or will this story prove to be a much darker fantasy?

Princess Serenity [ Sailor Moon ] F/M

( Serenity is the only child and heir of a powerful, ethereal queen. All of her life, she's been greatly sheltered, leading to her not knowing much of the universe outside her castle walls. Her personality is that of a sweet, albeit naive and sometimes childish young woman whose love for those around her is ultimately her greatest strength - and downfall. However, it seems that a degree of melancholy is present in her; her story, after all, is ultimately a cosmic tragedy.

tl;dr Slightly prim, a little proper, mostly emotional. Kindhearted but with an air of sadness. Otherworldly. Tends to love fast and destructively.

I'm here for all your dramatic, torrid affairs of the heart involving royalty, rival factions, commoners, knights, princesses, class differences, messy emotions, and potential bloody tragedies. Let's AU our characters into whatever world you'd like to cook up. I can provide prompts if you'd like. )

[There are legends of the isle of Tir na n'Og. Tales of the beauty and bounty of its shores. The challenge and danger of its people. The fact that they are not, in fact, people in the same way most who are human are. It is shrouded in myth as dense as the mystical fog that blankets the waters surrounding the island. It is said that only the truly noble can find their way to its shores.

The legends often forget to speak of the darker shores to the north where the winters are a brutal and the nights are always long. The challenge of the isle's southern clime is its beauty and what it hides. The challenge of the isle's north is laid bare, hiding the wonders within the stark climate.

It is no kindness that Sieger's band finds its way to the northern shore and one of the coastal villages. The people tending boats and fishing nets are uncanny. Apparently beautiful even in their labor, but in flickers and flashes at the corner of the viking's eyes, they may see hints of things absolutely inhuman. The first sense of what is to come.]

[personal profile] hamrammr 2017-05-18 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
The thick fog that rolled in around their ships was worrisome but not the worst his band of warriors had seen in their time on the sea. It was when the clouds blocked the stars that Sieger worried slightly. They used the stars to navigate along the waters and without them they only had the wind and their instincts to guide them.

When the fogs lifted they were in sight of a coast and he ordered his men to land. That the small village did not panic when they saw the sails of his ships with the snarling bear god was surprising. He and his warriors were feared up and down the coast and the small islands that dotted the sea. He leapt onto the shore, his bearskin more than enough to keep him warm in the unnaturally chilly air.

"Who leads your people?" he growled at one of the fisherman's, his hand very deliberately resting on his axe.

Perhaps they could get tribute and not have to sack the village but his warriors were restless, watching the people around them warily.

[personal profile] mabofwinterdark 2017-05-19 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
Many eyes follow the arrival of the ships. The dark and liquid black eyes of seals that swim the waters and bask on rocky outcroppings. The eyes of crows and other dark birds. Things men, even warriors who've explored more of the world than most, might be prone to ignore.

Some of the men, though, more in tune with the magic in the world will notice that some of the beautiful fishermen have shark's teeth when looked at from the corner of their eyes. They may get the first bit unsettled.

It is a small girl, though, among all the the watching crowd who speaks up to answer his question with the candor of a child. Her voice is soft and sweet like the tinkling of bells as she says, "The Mab."

The words cause an uneasy stirring in the villagers. People stating to pull back because of the name as much as realizing the arrival of so many foreign ships might imply a threat to the land. But a crone, bent double with age and half hidden by the mat of fishing nets she'd been tending, cackles. "Yes, the Mab." Deliberately invoking the faerie queen's name a second time.

[personal profile] hamrammr 2017-05-19 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
A murmur went through his warriors. They had heard legends while they pillaged across the lands. Some people spoke the name with great fear, others with reverence. Sieger looked over his men and the villagers, considering. There did not appear to be much plunder here, no monastery that he could see on the horizon and no great fort to sack. He would not take foolish risks, though the bear always wanted blood.

"I wish to speak with him," he said, hand still on his weapon. "Young child, go fetch this Mab. Men, anchor the ships!"

They could resupply here and be on their way when the clouds parted and once against they could see the stars. If the village did not wish to help them resupply, then he would attack and take what was needed but he had not lived this long as a warrior-king by making enemies of everyone he came across.

His men once again talked softly among themselves, many of them clearly preferring the boats to the shore. He stayed among the villagers, tall and fearless.
mabofwinterdark: (Night-Miffed)

[personal profile] mabofwinterdark 2017-05-20 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
At the third mention of the queen's name, a tension runs through the villagers. A man steps forward to draw Sieger's attention, "You've already summoned her."

The words seem to break the tension as the villagers begin scurrying, clearly more afraid of what is coming than the men with weapons and clear violence in their natures. It's not a matter of discounting the risk of iron that the vikings bring so much as the knowledge of their queen and the risk she brings. No one utters her name as they hide away children and things in patterns that make little sense to outsiders. Faerie ways are strange.

The drumbeat of hooves comes with uncanny speed as a group of riders near. The horse are beautiful fleet footed creatures with bridles that shine with fine gold and silver work even at a distance. Their riders are clearly armed but not armored, allowing for some part of their more than natural speed but not the strange sense of wildness to the band. The figure in the lead wears a heavy gold torque as an English king might wear a crown, but with each passing moment it becomes more clear that rider, the Mab, is no man.
hamrammr: (listening)

[personal profile] hamrammr 2017-05-20 11:26 am (UTC)(link)
He had faced powerful men before without fear and now stood at attention, watching the riders with a critical eye. Strong women were rarer but they existed among his people. Often they made fine warriors, though none were berserkers.

"Perfect," he said dryly. "Men, stay with the boats."

"My lord..." his second frowned but Sieger shook his head. No, he would face these riders and their Queen alone. He had no fear.

He pulled the hood of his bearskin over his head, the familiar weight of it and the scent of herbs as reassuring as his faith in the shaman that made the skin for him. If these armed riders and their Queen ordered his death he would tear them from their horses and overwhelm the land. His men were ready and more than willing.

There was wealth here somewhere considering the wealth draped all over the Queen. It could be quite the raid if they could find where the wealth was hidden.
mabofwinterdark: (Night-Light)

[personal profile] mabofwinterdark 2017-05-21 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
The riders fan out as they near the shore where the ships are anchored. Weapons are present as undeniable and unspoken threat, bows half drawn in no few cases, but no shot is taken, no threat is offered. What is clear is that if the people of the village had a strange appeal, this host is inhuman in its beauty, male and female both. They shine more brightly than even the rich fabric and impossible quality of the goods they wear and use. A king's ransom on the poorest of their number. No few new arrivals to the isle have been cowed by that alone.

Mab does not expect the leader of such a raiding party to fall so easily. Greed is a strong motivator for anyone who wants power, and no one who wraps himself so completely in the symbol of his warrior god is content with a small measure of power. It is part of why she has come herself. To see if he is just hollow ambition and violence or if there is a quality to him that justifies allowing him access to the rewards of her land.

So she breaks off from her beautiful horsemen, leaving the other riders milling in strange patterns like the flight of birds. Mab carries a weight with her, a sense of otherness and strength that does not entirely fit with her slight frame and delicate features. It's in her eyes that Seiger may find the real hint to her age and nature, if he can look past the surface as her horse stops a bare feet before him.

"You have called my name. I have answered." The words seem to be enough for her, because she stops, giving him room to respond.

"My warriors and I have landed on these shores after losing our way on the ocean," he said as he thumped his hand on his chest, fist against his heart in his people's traditional greeting of respect. If they were allies he would have grasped her forearm. However, she was an unknown and clearly powerful.

And wealthy. There was plunder here though perhaps it would not be as easy to take as from the monks and weak Kings that turned to false gods and idols to protect them from him and his men.

"We are low on fresh water and food. I humbly request supplies so that we may continue our journey when we are able to see the stars again." He was not such a fool as to attack right now. The weapons of these people did not look to be made of iron which would bounce off his bear hide without a single injury. Where they iron he would order is men to attack and take what they wanted but they would need to be careful here.

Perhaps when the Queen and her forces were gone he could have an opportunity to tear into these people. Not yet, though, this was not the time.

The height of her horse allows Mab the opportunity to take her measure of Seiger without dropping below him in height. She studies the strength of his body and the power of the skin with a growing curiosity. Not a hero, but a man with a name, she has no doubt, and a faith that would not deny the room for her people. There are worse arrivals, and certainly his manner is respectful enough even with the understood and underlying threat to his presence.

"You wish food and drink? Until you can see the stars again?" Mab asks the question though she needs no clarification because of the shiver of joy it sends through the waiting villagers. It has been so long since someone made it to this faerie realm and asked for the things that might bind them there and make the vulnerable, and here the berserker has has for it within moments, setting up a time limit that is well within her ability to control. Her smile is wide and bright.

She dismounts her horse lightly, bare feet hardly sinking in the marshy ground. "There will be no stars tonight, but you have come in a good season. We will feast tonight to celebrate your arrival, and tend to the stores you need tomorrow."

Her words send the villagers into a flurry of activity and a single member of her host breaks of, riding at a breakneck speed to deliver the message of her order with it. There are so many who would like to feast tonight, after all.

The murmur through the crowd was noticed and Sieger didn't quite like the sudden excitement. Perhaps they were grateful that him and his band weren't going to destroy and burn everything they owned but he was not quite confident of that.

"That is quite favorable," he said, once again inclining his head towards her. "I will prepare my men for such a celebration and then we will come with you to your hold. A moment please."

He turned his back on the Queen and walked over to his second. They spoke in low tones. The majority of his men wore bear skins but a handful had smaller skins in various shades of grey. The Ulfhednar were swift and vicious, the wolf god giving them his favor. He ordered two to be left behind on each boat to make sure nothing happened to them. The order was loud enough to be heard by the crowd.

His secret order was that one of the two begin to spy on the people and see what got everyone so interested in a feast with invaders.

She lets him talk to his men while she considers his answer, a small smile teasing at the corners of her mouth. He thinks she would welcome them into the the heart of her country? An option, given the boredom that sometimes becomes dangerous among the most powerful of her people, but she has no great desire to do so. This small village is a part of her holding, and a partial language barrier can be useful. She uses the time while he gives orders to give her own.

There is magic in the transformation as she slips into her own more comfortable tongue, directing the preparation for the feast with clear commands. Long tables and benches are produced. Wood is gathered for bonfires. The smell of cooking spreads with smoke from the ovens in the home. But the ornaments, the banners, dishes and serving ware are riches. Some, truly are riches that could only have been saved from the wrecks of ships of other nations. Some are artifacts of inhuman skill. Mab seems to care about exposing them to the raiding party as little as if they were all made of wood and bronze.
