[eeee yes, I love these two]

Tony knew bringing Peter into his fight with Steve was dangerous, he was a high school kid who should be worrying about girls and homework. His feelings over the whole situation got even more complicated the first time he sat down with him and just bumped his leg. In that moment he felt a warmth start to wash over him and jerk back praying Peter didn't notice. He couldn't afford a soul bond not now after all this time.

Peter was accustomed to the danger. It was the general sense of unease, the uncertainty, that bothered him. He tried so hard to do the right thing and yeah, Tony made a compelling argument, but...something didn't feel quite right. It doesn't help that Captain America was on the other side. How could Captain America be wrong?

Childish logic, yeah, but Peter remembers watching the old reruns with his Uncle on TCM. Perhaps Peter doesn't believe in superheroes, but he believes in his Uncle, and it's enough to warrant silent questioning.

Peter's so engrossed in this inner conflict that the bump against his leg went mostly unnoticed. There was something about it, though, that pulled him out of his thoughts and prompted him to look up at Tony, mildly confused. Just a...feeling he couldn't quite place.

"...how far are we?"

Tony was so focused on the fact that his soulmate was a kid that he didn't catch what Peter was saying right away. So he said the first thing that came into his head. "Huh?" Not his more eloquent moments but this whole situation was surreal.

"How far are we from the..." Peter hesitated, unsure of what to call it. Battlefield? Airport? He still wasn't sure what country they were going to. Peter watched Tony for a long moment, brow furrowing at the...emotion he couldn't quite name. Strange. "I just mean, how close are we to landing?"

Ah good, details like this Tony can focus on. He pulls out his Stark phone and glances at it then nods. "Should be another twenty minutes or so," he replies. He's tapping his fingers on his knee feeling his anxiety spike even more then it already was. He was throwing his soulmate into a fight that he wasn't ready for and Tony knew it would be bad. He and Steve were stubborn even when they were getting along and now things were just on the verge of exploding.

"You can back out at any time kid," he says wanting to offer Peter that out now before things went to hell and the person he'd been waiting his whole dammed life for got hurt before they even had a chance to bond.

"And we're in...Europe?" Peter's just going to start guessing at this point and watch Tony to gauge when he's right. Peter's attention is caught by the fidgeting, but he just chalks it up to nerves. They were about to go fight the other half of the Avengers, Peter would be more worried if Tony weren't nervous.

"I'm already here." He checked his webbing cartridge for...probably the sixth time, spinning the pods into calibration yet again. He wants to crawl the walls until he feels better, but he's pretty sure that sort of thing is frowned upon in airplanes. "Besides, this is what you wanted, isn't it? Wanted me to fight?"

"That was before," Tony says then cuts himself off. He doesn't want to give Peter more to think about when he should be focusing on not dying. "and we are in Germany or we are going to be once we land. Intel has Cap and his team at the airport. Don't know what he's planning, but even Captain America can think on his feet now and then."

"Before?" Peter frowns, a little confused. His brow furrows as he studies Tony a little closer, but there's no indication of whatever he's worried about. He did kind of strongarm him there, and hey, surprise, it worked. "We'll stop them. This webbing has a tensile strength of roughly 120 pounds per square millimeter. So it can hold about...3048 pounds per inch. At 300 p.s.i., no less."

In short, he'd never exactly had a chance to test it out against a super soldier, but it was unlikely Steve would be able to break out of it if Peter could manage to hit him with it - at least, not with his own brute strength.

Tony wants to tell the kid the truth but he stops himself. Tells himself that he's too much of a mess to have a soulmate. "Go for his legs," he says instead, "he never thinks to turn to the side to keep people from pulling them out from under him."

The way Tony avoids Peter's question doesn't go unnoticed, but the conversation has moved on and Peter isn't sure he wants to press it. Tony would never put him in danger by withholding information, or so Peter thinks. Has to think, because he can't go into a battle suspicious of his own teammates.

Yeah, but imagine the regret if something does happen and you never said anything, Tony.

"His legs," Peter ponders that for a moment, glancing at the window. They're still in the clouds, all fluffy white past the windows - Peter was in awe, when they first got up into the air. Of course it's his first time on an airplane. First time out of New York City, period. "And you're sure they're going to fight?" It boggles his mind that they won't at least try to talk. Peter's never had a team before, but he's pretty sure teams just don't turn against themselves so damn quickly.

Tony takes a long time to answer. "The thing you have to understand about Steve is once he gets an idea in his head it's in there for good. He's stubborn and when he believes in something that stubbornness gets worse. He'll fight believe me. We're past the talking stage at this point."

Peter...can understand that. His brow furrows in thought as the plane begins to descend, slowly dropping out of those fluffy clouds. Closer than he thought, perhaps.

"I'm sorry," Peter says this because he doesn't think anyone has, to Tony. "This...it sucks." Right, wrong, everybody's a little bit of both. But it still sucks.

Tony sighed softly. "Yeah it does," he admits, "I would rather turn this plane around and go home and let Captain America do what he wants to do. But Steve is my friend and I don't want to see him locked in jail for a century."

Peter hesitates, slowly reaching out to Tony. He's not great at the whole comforting thing but Tony looks like he could use someone friendly on his side. What he's heard so far, it doesn't seem like the people on Tony's side are happy about being there at all. "It takes a lot to stand up to a national icon, and even more to stand up to a friend. There's a compromise buried in here some-"

Peter cuts off the second his hand makes contact with Tony's shoulder, freezing up instantly.

Tony feels the warmth of the soul bond completing and while anyone else would be rejoicing he was mourning. "I'm sorry," he muttered, "I wanted to protect you kid and now I can't."

"What?" Peter can't help the panic in his voice, the utter bewilderment. His head is spinning but - Tony knew? It sounded like he'd known, anyway, which, what the fuck? "I don't - you - I don't need protecting"

Peter still hasn't moved his hand, mostly because he just can't bring himself to, with all the wonderfully warm feelings flooding through the point of contact.

[personal profile] notonmyspace 2017-02-11 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)

Tony turns slightly "This is more then powers Peter. Steve will use you against me if he finds out we are bonded. He wants Bucky Barnes safe and he'll do whatever it takes to get what he wants. He doesn't care about being reasonable anymore."

spideyguy: (88)

[personal profile] spideyguy 2017-02-11 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
"So don't let him find out." Easier said than done, especially with a completed bond. A recent bond. Peter's just going to pretend they aren't screwed. "You knew, and you honestly thought sending me into a fight to face Captain America and half the Avengers without me knowing was a good idea?"

They're kind of ruining the moment. Peter doesn't care. He's bonded to Tony fucking Stark. Aunt May's going to facepalm so hard. Just when he thought his life couldn't get weirder.

[personal profile] notonmyspace 2017-02-11 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)

"At least when it wasn't completed we weren't glowing like a Christmas Tree any other bonded pair is going to see and know. And I'm pretty damm sure Barnes and Rogers are bonded and now they'll hit me hard thinking I pushed you into it or something. I didn't even think I had a soulmate much less it was someone..so young."

Tony feels like shit...this kid is stuck with a broken, sad soulmate who can't even keep the Avengers together much less love anyone. And now he's risking them both to talk or smack sense into Captain America. "I'm sorry Peter."

[personal profile] spideyguy 2017-02-12 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
Peter finally took stock of the situation, realizing that the warmth had a physical implication to it. Oh. Jesus, he almost didn't notice. Well, it's not like he's been bonded before to know! Fuck. "That's not how it works and you know it." Peter finally, reluctantly, pulls his hand back, though he can't bear to move too far. Recently bonded couples didn't normally separate for...some time. "I'm not that young." Besides, it wasn't like you got to choose. "Age of consent in New York." Not that it even matters. Soul bonds aren't inherently sexual, though obviously they tended to turn into that.

"Sorry I kept you waiting so long?" It's a lame joke, but Peter offers a smidge of a smile anyway. "You don't need to be sorry."

[personal profile] notonmyspace 2017-02-12 03:23 am (UTC)(link)

"They come from the 1940's, for all I know they arranged soul bonds back then," Tony said, "and Rogers isn't exactly playing nice right now." He manages a smile. "I am sorry. If this had happened a few years ago I wouldn't have been so...like I am now."

spideyguy: (Default)

[personal profile] spideyguy 2017-02-12 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
"I don't think that's historically accurate," Peter shakes his head. He doesn't know a whole lot about Steve, but would he really go so far as to use Tony's soulbond against him? If he could catch Peter, that is. He's pretty quick.

"You're fine. You're - I mean. You're my soulmate. You're - meant for me." Good, bad, all of it. Peter's made to handle it.

[personal profile] notonmyspace 2017-02-27 01:26 am (UTC)(link)

Tony rubs his hands over his face. "I'm broken Peter," he said, "I....have nightmares. I barely sleep some nights. Most of the world hates me and if this battle goes the way I think it will, things are going to get so much worse."

spideyguy: (7)

[personal profile] spideyguy 2017-02-27 07:00 am (UTC)(link)
"You know, maybe you and I aren't so different." Peter says quietly, cocking his head to the side as he considers Tony for a moment. "If you think I scare easy...I mean, I think it's pretty obvious I don't." He knows Tony's looked into his past as a vigilante. After everything that's been taken away, did you think he would ever give up?

"Then it gets worse together." It can't be as bad as being parted after a friggen soulbond.

[personal profile] notonmyspace 2017-02-27 02:23 pm (UTC)(link)

Tony chucked and shook his head. "Of course my soulmate would be as stubborn as I am," he mutters, "no one else would do, but someone who could keep up with you Mom always used to say." He looks Peter in the face. "This isn't going to be easy you and me, but I am going to do my best to never let you down I promise."
