[ the colossal fuck ups that became part of scott's life never quite went away, eventually becoming the norm. not that it really stopped scott from trying to overcome them anyway in the first place. still. he tried his best, determined to at least make better life decisions than before (not that the ones pre-pym were terrible by any means, but not everyone agreed). scott stuck around through a great deal of things, generally under the claim of going along for the ride, just glad to have some semblance of purpose once again.

that being said, the whole superheroing thing still hadn't stuck, at least, not the way it seemed to with everyone else.

he still suffered bruises day in and day out, thrown off guard just because he doesn't have the foresight that guys like steve or even hope had when it came to hand to hand combat. sure there was better progress than the first few weeks against hope, but christ it never stopped hurting, never quite went away. scott lays there, sprawled on the roof of a nondescript building, torn between wondering if help would actually be on the way, or if the starbucks down the street was still open and inclined to feed him. all in all though, they were both terrible options because the former involved embarrassing himself in front of a bunch of greats and the latter involved embarrassing himself as some sort of incompetent superhero. not that scott was the latter, definitely not.

when peter finally arrives, the only thing scott's managed to do is take the helmet off and lie there in self defeat. ]
'Sup. [ scott manages with a wry grin, hand in the air. ] you didn't bring food, did you?

[ he could have managed more, but dear god that involved effort he didn't have just yet. ]

it's all good! (:

[Scott's luck is not all that different from Peter's, in some respects. Constant fuck ups - check. Trying to do the right thing and consistently failing - check. Sure, they come from different walks of life, but the fundamental desire to make the world a better place, to help people that couldn't help themselves - that was the same across the board.

He's lucky Peter's the one responding to his call, because Peter also knows a thing or two about getting your ass handed to you. He's half convinced guys like Steve never failed at anything. But Peter's first six months out on the street were where he earned his stripes, picking up moves here and there until his fighting style was so convoluted and random nobody could quite pin what the hell he was doing, without the benefit of backup when he got shot, or stabbed, or any number of things.

Basically, he knows Scott is Going Through It (TM).

Peter lands off a backflip into a crouch next to Scott, bug eyes glinting with the light from the street below. He tilts his head, taking in the spread-eagled position. The I'm-really-tired-fuck-it position.]
Does this suit look like it has pockets?

It should.

[ whoever came up with the idea of no pockets as an improvement over the whole 'no capes' shtick deserved to have their ass handed to them. but scott was beginning to learn just how prevalent the issue with no pockets was when we tried to get cassie some new clothes - a lesson in disappointment. ]

Stark made the suit, didn't he? You'd think it comes with pockets because y'know, he's all about that functionality and fanciness.

[ that was more words than he intended and definitely not as nice as he intended, but all ccott can manage in the way of regret is to push himself up, so he's propped up on his elbows. ]

Meanwhile, if I mess with my suit, the wrath of Pym Almighty comes down on me. [ not that it's stopped him before.

scott doesn't actually need peter there, but he's still trying to get the hang of working with others, working with some guys that are a household name, and then there's peter parker, teenage extraordinaire getting himself into something that's much bigger than either of them. but sometimes there's what-did-they-call-it, that whole call to make something of themselves, responsibility, and that brings them together all the same. ]

Anyway. Surprised they sent you. Don't you have school or something these days?

It is functional. I have to calculate my aerodynamics very precisely, or I go splat on the pavement.

[Peter's lucky he finds that sort of thing fun, or he'd have a hard time webslinging. And okay, he had the tiniest pocket on the side of his hip, but he didn't exactly carry money around and it wasn't big enough for food - just his cell phone. He'll still be able to get Scott a hot dog, if the guy can stand up.]

Who cares? You're not stupid, you know how the thing works. Do whatever you want to it. [Even if Scott's super secretive about it, Peter's never doubted he knows what he's doing.

He's considering checking for a concussion, but he doesn't want to do that without Scott's permission. Dude looks like he's in full body pain.]

You're on my turf. Also pretty sure Stark is just that lazy. [Peter's been doing this for a while, and no matter how admittedly-awed he is over Tony Stark and The Avengers, he still knows his job.] I'm nineteen, I don't have a bedtime.

[He's in college now. It's not his fault all the other superheroes were weirdly old. Except the Human Torch, but he was a special case.]
