the au meme.

the alternate universe meme

how to play
1. post with your character, name and canon in the subject line.
2. feel free to mention which aus you’re willing or not willing to play in the body of the comment.
3. tag by rolling for an alternate universe setting using rng.
4. or tag by picking whatever au you’d like to play in most.
5. have fun!

alternate universes
i - all human: in an all human au, characters who are canonically vampires, werewolves or superheroes, are now humans, with corresponding changes to their backstories.

ii - apocalypse: a portmanteau of "apocalypse fic", apocafic is fiction set during or after some sort of apocalypse, or end of the world. some canons carry a built-in apocalypse against which the protagonists are fighting: in apocafic, they lose. for example, apocafic in stargate and x-files is usually set after the alien occupation; supernatural apocafic is set on a demon-controlled earth.

iii - band: an alternate universe in which the characters are members in, or form a band. often, the instruments they plan and their roles in the band are analogous to their canon identities. for example, tony stark might be cast as the fame-hungry lead singer who is also a musical genius, or river tam might be a classically trained pianist who, after a terrible experience at julliard, writes songs for mal reynold's grunge rock band, serenity.

iv - circus: circus aus are a popular trope in fanfic and sometimes fanart. using a circus as a setting means introducing the characters to each other in a close-knit community. that can help break down barriers between them and make them bond together against the outside world which may not understand them as well as the other characters do. it also brings a sense of adventure and the idea that this world may have different rules and everything is possible. a circus can also be a good place for characters to go undercover and meet the love of their lives.

v - coffee shop: the barista au (or coffeeshop au, or the closely related bakery au) is a popular fanfiction trope in livejournal fandoms. in most cases, one half of the main pairing is the barista and the other is or becomes their favorite customer; in some stories the whole cast works at a coffee shop. this trope is especially popular in fandoms where one character is very attached to coffee, either in canon or in fanon, or is frequently stressed.

vi - college/high school: college fic is a popular genre of fanfic (less often a genre of fanart) that places characters together in college or another secondary institution such as the starfleet academy in star trek fic (then called "academy fic"). this can be canon stories, for example backstory if characters have or could have met during college, or college aus, similar to high school aus. in science fiction, historical or fantasy fandoms the present day college au is a popular subgenre of the modern au that puts fantastic or historical characters in more mundane everyday settings.

vii - cop/detective: an alternate universe in which the characters are cast as cops or investigators of some kind. often, the canon villain is also cast as the villain in the story. this might be set in modern times, or in a noir-like environment, complete with gangsters and femme fatales.

viii - daemons: his dark materials is a fantasy trilogy by philip pullman. the trilogy consists of the golden compass (1995; published in the uk as northern lights), the subtle knife (1997), and the amber spyglass (2000). there are currently two companion novellas: lyra's oxford (2003) and once upon a time in the north (2008). a movie adaptation of the first book was released in theatres in late 2007. humans have their souls living outside their body in the form of an animal companion. males have female souls and females have male souls. the animals often correspond to the character’s personality.

ix - fantasy: an alternate universe populated with fantastical characters like elves, dwarves, unicorns, sorcerers, and dragons. canon characters might be cast as analogous races (e.g. clint barton or katniss everdeen as elf archers) or they might be humans in a fantastical setting. characters also might be able to secretly shape-shift into another form, like a dragon, and therefore is related closely to were/vampire/supernatural aus.

x - historical: a historical au is a fanwork which moves characters into a different historical period than their canon setting. typically this involves taking "contemporary" characters (from the late 20th century or 21st century) and putting them in an earlier historical period (such as the 19th century or before). popular settings for historical aus include: pirates, america's old west, britain's regency period, ancient rome, a vague facsimile of medieval england such as robin hood, and many others.

xi - hooker/porn/stripper: hookerfic is a type of fanfic where one or more of the characters is a sex worker. there are many different types of hookerfic, ranging from more realistic depictions to the more common pretty woman-type fantasy of a hooker with a heart of gold, rescued from life on the streets by a client. sex work of all kinds is portrayed—brothels, escorts, street prostitution, "call-girls" as well as strippers and go-go boys.

xii - magic: magic aus are alternate universe fanworks that incorporate magic in fandoms where there is no magic present in canon. (or in some cases, fanworks that make a canon with magic more magical.) they differ from elf aus in that there may be magic without any elves showing up, and are opposites of all human and mundane aus.

xiii - neighbors/roomates: an alternate universe where the canon characters live next-door to one another, or in the same apartment building or complex, or in the same apartment. often, this is also an all-human au, if the canon characters are powered in some way. the forced proximity is usually used to create romantic tension between characters.

xiv - space/sci-fi: a space au is an alternate universe where a source set on earth is transported into space; works are often referred to as "[fandom] in spaaaaaaaaace!" the trope can be a form of crackfic, but often includes surprisingly serious reinterpretations of the most earthbound of sources, particularly historical fiction written or set before space exploration. cyberpunk trappings such as robots, cyborgs and ais are often included.

xv - steampunk: steampunk was originally a term for a sub-genre of speculative fiction that imitated 19th century "scientific romances" like the work of jules verne and h.g. wells. later, the term was applied to a general aesthetic involving styles that would be "futuristic" from the perspective of the 19th century. steampunk appears in fanworks as both a genre and an aesthetic. there are some fandoms for which the canon is steampunk(-ish), e.g. the secret adventures of jules verne, but more often it is found as steampunk alternate universe.

xvi - western: the western is a genre of fiction set in the later half of the 19th century in the western part of north america, especially the united states, but also canada and mexico. sometimes also included in the genre are stories about western-type characters and plots in other settings, e.g. "space westerns" (in science fiction settings) and contemporary westerns (set in the western part of contemporary north america).

xvii - were/vamp/supernatural: a reversal of the all-human, in these fics characters who are normally human are now supernatural creatures of some kind the most common being werewolves or vampires.

xviii - choose your own: self-explanatory! choose your own option.

When one has time between battles with Separatists and one can't get back to one's secret wife for some 'shore leave'. Well.

The planet he'd found Theon on wasn't so far away and he was just antsy enough with waiting for something to happen that it had made going back seem like a good idea.

Which is why now he was zipping out of atmosphere with a passenger in tow. "I didn't expect," he says conversationally, "that you were going to actually agree on a longer trip."

Then again, Anakin had gotten the impression from their prior conversation that Theon might not have had much waiting for him back at his home. That could be enough motivation for anyone to see what else the universe held. Especially when it turned out to be much larger than anticipated.

[personal profile] krakenoutofwater 2015-10-04 07:40 am (UTC)(link)
Going back is such a terrible option for Theon. He has literally no one who he can count on as an ally, not after the terrible mess he's made of Winterfell, and with what happened to Robb... It's his own fault he has no allies, really, which makes it all the worse. The awful things he's done... no one will ever again trust Theon Turncloak. He was completely trapped back there and he'd had this lingering feeling of dread...

So an extended trip into the sky, into "space", is just what he needs right now.

"Neither did I, at first... but I didn't understand the immensity of all of this, what to expect..." He glances over curiously. "How far off is our destination?"
morally_cryptic: (determined)

that feeling of dread was the Force telling him to get the heck out before Ramsay got there :)

[personal profile] morally_cryptic 2015-10-04 06:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Anakin ruminated over that question for a moment. Providing it in kilometers or light-years or even parsecs were probably all useless in this context.

"It'll take an hour or so to get there," he finally settles on.

Not that he's going straight back to where the Resolute was currently stationed. He'd claimed he was going off on a scouting mission, after all so...they'd do some scouting.

He just hopes, a little ungraciously considering it was his idea, that he won't have to hold Theon's hand the whole time.

But he probably should explain a little more. "There's a war going on, out there," he waves vaguely out the viewport at the stars, "across a lot of the galaxy. Most of the galaxy is a part of the Republic, but there's a group that are trying to split away and..." he shrugs. "Well, we're fighting them. There's rumors of Separatist activity where we're going. It's probably nothing but I said I'd check it out."
krakenoutofwater: (our war cries will echo)

lmao, yes exactly, the perfect explanation! :D best timing to flee his plotline

[personal profile] krakenoutofwater 2015-10-05 05:38 am (UTC)(link)
He nods, the timing making sense even if he can hardly believe the idea of the distance they're probably covering, the fact that they're hurtling through space. On a ship of all things, a ship! He has a moment of imagining himself captaining one of these ships, being triumphant in a way he never could have back home...

"You're in the midst of a war too?" Well, there's something that's at least familiar ground to him. Sort of. The War of the Five Kings probably seems so much... smaller, in comparison to this whole crisis that's erupting now across the entire galaxy. Still, he understands warfare. The weapons may change and the scenery but it's got to be basically the same. "Tell me more about the enemy? What are their strategies, their tactics?" He smirks, jokingly adding, "I already get the impression there are no horses involved."
morally_cryptic: (did you really just say that?)

[personal profile] morally_cryptic 2015-10-05 01:05 pm (UTC)(link)
"Horses?" His expression makes clear he's unsure of whether Theon is talking about some kind of weapon or some kind of transportation they use. Or whatever. But he shakes his head, "no, probably not."

"The Separatist army is almost exclusively made up of various types of 'droids that-..." and then he trails off and takes in Theon as if really seeing how he's geared up for the first time. No blasters, idiot. Definitely no lightsaber. "Force," he mutters though it's certainly still loud enough for Theon to hear, "he's got no idea how to fight them."

And that's how you unintentionally insult a new friend.

krakenoutofwater: (in victory and defeat)

[personal profile] krakenoutofwater 2015-10-06 03:58 am (UTC)(link)
"What? Of course I have an idea!"

No, he really doesn't, but still, Theon doesn't like to be seen as useless in any sense of the word. Just like when he'd gone to his father, he finds himself getting overly defensive of himself, of his worth as a warrior and ultimately, a man. "I strategized alongside the King in the North himself, and fought at his side, and we never lost a battle. The Battle of the Whispering Wood was a great victory I fought in... I crossed swords with the Kingslayer... well, nearly crossed swords with him. He's one of our world's greatest swordsmen." He pauses, feeling reluctant to discuss what he did to Winterfell but still. It was a victory for him nonetheless. "I even took an entire castle by storm with a small raiding party, and a cunning bit of strategy."

Yet, he still somehow has the impression that knowing how to swing a sword... might not be enough out here. "I commanded ships... well... a ship. A sea-ship. Is it all really so different? What's a "droid", anyway?"
morally_cryptic: (hey THAT's an idea)

[personal profile] morally_cryptic 2015-10-06 04:13 am (UTC)(link)
Anakin holds up his hands in a gesture of apology, "I didn't mean to suggest you can't fight...I just..." He sighs and turns to look over his shoulder, "hey, Artoo!"

The droid he'd had keep itself scarce until things had gotten settled. But now was as good a time as any.

So after a moment, it comes wheeling into the cockpit, whistling a query at Anakin even while he focuses a lens on Theon.

"This," Anakin focuses his own gaze on the other man as he gestures now at Artoo, "is a droid. Well, a kind of droid. They're machines built out of metal that can be made to do certain tasks. Artoo's type of droid was built to help fly ships but he's...well. A bit more multi-purpose than that." Which comment gets a bit of a self-important tootle from the droid in question.
krakenoutofwater: (so far from the sea)

[personal profile] krakenoutofwater 2015-10-06 06:03 am (UTC)(link)
"He's built of metal... and he's alive?" Or so it appears to Theon, who's startled by the appearance of this creature... contraption... with its peculiar domed head and what very much almost looks like an eye flashing at him. He's astonished when the droid also responds, making it very clear he understands. "You can... you can build these living things that understand us? Are all droids like this? I assume the ones for warfare must be different..."

There's been the occasional whispers of magic, talk of dragons reappearing far to the east, strange rumors he's barely paid mind to when he had more pressing concerns. But... he's never in his wildest mind thought about something like living metal creatures like this.
morally_cryptic: (determined)

just wait till he finds out Anakin has a sword made of light =P

[personal profile] morally_cryptic 2015-10-06 12:08 pm (UTC)(link)
"Alive? No, not exactly," not if one goes by the can he be sensed in the fabric of the Force definition, sorry Artoo. "But some of them can be pretty self-aware." Like the example they have here.

"Battle droids on the other hand...Artoo, show us a standard Trade Federation-style battle droid." Obligingly, the little astromech projects an image of one into the air between Anakin and Theon. "These are the most common. They're about the height of a man and they're pretty dumb. It's just that they've been built to overwhelm by sheer number so there's a lot of them. Either way, you might be able to take one down with a sword if you hit the neck connector just right."

Unfortunately, it only got worse from there. Super battle droids? Droidekas? Those new commando droids? Yeah, a sword wasn't going to be too helpful there.

krakenoutofwater: (ever smiling)

it'll blow his mind! probably will make a bit more sense than most spacey technology XD

[personal profile] krakenoutofwater 2015-10-07 05:40 am (UTC)(link)
Theon looks completely startled when that projection suddenly appears. To him it still seems like sorcery, or what he'd figure sorcery looked like, at any rate. Hm, so instead of enlisting their bannermen they instead enlist these... droids? It all seems a very strange way to wage warfare, though perhaps it makes some sense, instead of having people on the front lines. Droids, that resemble living things, but aren't alive, and are made of metal? An entire galactic war? Gods have mercy, what has he gotten himself into this time?

"Might be able to? So are you implying that some other weapon might be better? A long range weapon, perhaps... Because while I'm good with a sword, my real expertise is with the bow. If they attack in such numbers, several well-placed archers could really decimate their forces before the rest of the army moves in... assuming you get arrows strong enough to pierce their metal hides..."

Siege weaponry, too, he figures, imagining a trebuchet flinging devastation upon them. He can only go with what he knows and sadly they have no sort of firearms where he's from. (Aside from, well, literal dragon fire across the world and in old boring history books).
morally_cryptic: (okay...)

at least it's recognizable as a _sword_ :)

[personal profile] morally_cryptic 2015-10-07 12:45 pm (UTC)(link)
"Might be able to," he confirms. "And that's just for these guys, you get a super battle droid?" And the projection changes to show one of them instead, "a regular sword isn't going to have a chance and you probably don't want to get that close to them anyway, if you had a choice." Maybe a vibro-sword...but he doesn't have one of those around.

But it does segue nicely into Theon's suggestion of a long range weapon. Wookiees had bowcasters, of course, but Anakin didn't have one of those either though he suspects Theon would find it surprisingly easy to use.

"A blaster," he says, "you're suggesting blasters. Which," he grins wryly, "the droids carry too." Hence why he wouldn't want to get in close if he could help it. Though come to think of it, the idea of archers is an interesting one. They wouldn't be firing straight toward the droids but up and over and could they come up with something (like those bowcasters maybe?) that the clones could use...?

After a moment, he has to shake himself out of that line of thought, it doesn't help the here and now. "Hang on a second," and with that he's sliding out of the pilot's chair and going to a storage compartment. "I don't really use them, myself, but they come in handy." And this was a pretty standard issue Republic shuttle, so it came with some extra kit for the clones.
krakenoutofwater: (better to be cruel)

exactly! it'll be a lot easier to understand than blasters haha

[personal profile] krakenoutofwater 2015-10-09 04:52 am (UTC)(link)
Narrowing his eyes, Theon takes in the sight of the super battle droid, the shape of it, and he tries to imagine a bunch of those charging a battlefield. Very different than an army of men, even armored they can be dealt with by swords and bows. He's still certain that a bunch of huge siege weapons could do the trick against these things, but... some of that certainty is starting to waver. It's way beyond what he's used to.

"Blasters? These are long range weapons, I'm assuming?" He glances over, curious to see what Anakin is getting, how their weapons compare to what he knows of. It seems they have swords, but it also seems that's not the primary preferred weaponry... then again, if they have ships that fly through stars, who knows what sorts of weapons they have? He's seemed to imply there's more beyond that. "So what do you prefer to use?"
morally_cryptic: (hey THAT's an idea)

[personal profile] morally_cryptic 2015-10-09 05:12 am (UTC)(link)
"Right," he returns with a standard-issue blaster he's taken the liberty of removing the power cartridge from. No point in inviting trouble in the form of stray blasterfire. Demonstrating how one would hold the gun, he explains, "it fires a sort bolt, not something solid like an arrow. If you're lucky, you just get a graze and a burn if someone's aiming at you. If you aren't lucky and you aren't armored, you'll likely get a hole burnt through you instead."

That said, he hands the gun over so Theon can check it out. Probably the closest analogue for him would be something like a crossbow since at least both have a triggering mechanism.

"But me?" He waves at the lightsaber hanging off his belt, "I usually just use my lightsaber. It' a sword?" There was reason, after all, that many non-Jedi called them laser swords.
krakenoutofwater: (a dead enemy is a thing of beauty)

[personal profile] krakenoutofwater 2015-10-10 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Energy bolts? What a peculiar thing, it still sounds a lot like magic, though even that doesn't seem quite right. It's nothing like their weapons, but at least the comparison to arrows makes a lot of sense to him. Similar even with the effects... an arrow could just barely graze you, or it could jab into a vital spot and lead to a swift end. Though blasting holes sounds even more destructive.

Theon takes the gun in hand and gets a feel for its balance, putting it in hand as Anakin had demonstrated. He imagines what it would feel like to aim this at an enemy. Though the structure itself is strange, different, he at least picks up soon enough on the familiar aspects. A lot like a crossbow in ways. "Not too dissimilar in ways to aiming a bow, you still must have a good eye and a steady hand..."

He glances over at the weapon Anakin is armed with, curious. It doesn't look quite like a sword, though it certainly reminds him of perhaps just a sword hilt alone. "That's a sword? Where's... the rest of it?"
morally_cryptic: (jedi)

[personal profile] morally_cryptic 2015-10-10 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
"I'm sure we can fit in some target practice," he says, "when we get to the planet." Just hopefully Theon could practice with actual targets before being confronted with battle droids.

Then he smoothly unhooks the lightsaber from his belt and holds it out in Theon's direction so he can get a good look at it...but not so far as to invite him to take hold of it. Once that's done, he thumbs the blade on, its familiar snap hiss seeming to echo in the ship. "There's the rest of it," he says with some satisfaction, a little smirk curling at the corner of his mouth.
krakenoutofwater: (i am no stark)

[personal profile] krakenoutofwater 2015-10-12 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
"I'd like a bit of target practice." Theon gives a half-grin at the thought, it's a chance to show off his skills, or so he thinks. He's always been one to have a high opinion of himself and his abilities. Still, it's important to him to find something he can potentially take to, since he feels so out of his depth otherwise.

His eyes widen for not the first time as he watches that light beam suddenly emanate from what he'd rightly guessed as a hilt. It makes this weird sizzling sound too, enough of a hint to him that he definitely doesn't want to touch that blade at all. But instead of metal... it's that peculiar glowing light. "What's it made out of? That light?"
morally_cryptic: (smile)

[personal profile] morally_cryptic 2015-10-12 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
"It's called plasma, it's-..." he suspects they're both going to get tired of him saying, it's a science thing or some variation thereof. "-...a kind of energy. There's a device inside that the energy comes from and goes through a crystal that focuses've seen how you can do that with sunlight, right?" It seemed a reasonable assumption that somewhere Theon had seen something similar with glass or gemstones. "And then it comes out as a blade that can cut through...just about anything. Like battle droids," he grins a little cockily at that last comment before he shuts the lightsaber off again.

For a moment his attention is caught by a flashing light on the instrument panel. "We're almost there."
krakenoutofwater: (you have to know your name)

[personal profile] krakenoutofwater 2015-10-13 05:16 am (UTC)(link)
Theon nods as he explains the idea behind this... plasma. Crystal, glass, light, right, that all makes enough sense. It's definitely not the first and won't be the last he'll have some strange new concept to learn about, something which the people on his world hadn't even dreamed of yet. Not even those Maesters with all their chains and heavy books, not even they came up with any of this, it's incredible, really.

"I'd like to see that in action, against those droids..." Though he follows that up with, "Almost. Even I know better than to actually wish such a thing upon us." He glances toward the flashing light, then Anakin. "So this land... world... we're landing on... this is your home?" There are so many questions, things he wonders, what it's like being foremost, but that he'll see firsthand soon enough.
morally_cryptic: (Default)

[personal profile] morally_cryptic 2015-10-13 11:04 am (UTC)(link)

For a moment he looks almost wistful because of course mention of home brings Padme to mind. "No, this is just a short scouting expedition while on the way back to my...battle group."

Though what he's going to tell them about the stray he's picked up remains to be seen.

"I haven't been home in months, unfortunately."

krakenoutofwater: (so far from the sea)

[personal profile] krakenoutofwater 2015-10-14 05:39 am (UTC)(link)
Theon nods, accepting that answer, and realizing he'd better be ready for anything. A simple scouting mission could end up with crucial information... or there could be trouble waiting below.

"It's been a very long time since I've been home as well... and I don't mean the short time since leaving the planet." He gives his classic smirk to that, finding it easy to settle back into his usual way of dealing with things, finding something amusing in it. In truth, he understands a bit too well that wistful feeling, an ache for someplace he really can't ever return to anymore. "Where you found me wasn't my true home, not really... Anyway, is there anything I should be wary of? Is the word patrolled by droids, any other enemies?"
morally_cryptic: (smile)

[personal profile] morally_cryptic 2015-10-14 12:56 pm (UTC)(link)
"It's a planet that's nominally a part of the Republic, somewhat recently colonized so there aren't a lot of settlements there yet and nothing particularly large." But it had the kinds of mineral resources the Confederacy was all too willing to exploit. "There aren't supposed to be any Separatist forces there, but we've gotten some reports of strange activity."

Which could mean all sorts of things from nothing that requires the Republic's intervention to dammit, now we have to fight the Seps here too.

And they're reverting out of hyperspace back into realspace with a planet and two moons up ahead. "Though," he adds with a grin, "I hear the animals get pretty big."
krakenoutofwater: (salt and iron)

[personal profile] krakenoutofwater 2015-10-16 03:11 am (UTC)(link)
Watching the transition out of hyperspace is almost as strange as going in initially. Theon is amazed to see the appearance of a planet... yet another world... one that's different from his own. It's the farthest he's ever been from home, and yet for now he's not too bothered about that. He needed to leave it all behind, start anew in a way.

"Bigger than a bear or a direwolf, I'd guess?" He pauses, realizing that talk of his world must be as unusual to Anakin as everything he's seeing is to him. "Those are some of the large predators where I'm from, though... there's talk of even bigger creatures elsewhere." He eyes the planet they're approaching. "It sounds like we have to be on guard for any sort of possible threat." He'd rather face strange enormous creatures and Separatist forces any day over the enraged people of Winterfell.
morally_cryptic: (Default)

[personal profile] morally_cryptic 2015-10-16 04:10 am (UTC)(link)
Anakin taps his chin with a gloved hand as he pilots them in toward the planet. "I'm going to say yes and you can tell me whether I'm right if we run into one." Theon might notice a feeling of just a little more buoyancy than one would expect when they land, this planet having slightly less gravity than he'd be used to. Which is part of what allows for larger animal growth.

"And yeah, that tends to be a pretty good rule of thumb. The weather looks clear, at least."
krakenoutofwater: (so far from the sea)

[personal profile] krakenoutofwater 2015-10-17 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
"I'm sure I'll get a chance to let you know what I think pretty soon."

A fleeting thought goes through his mind that Robb will never believe him, that he'd love to see his reaction to all of this... a thought which is soon enough quashed when he remembers that he, uh, kind of took over Robb's castle and fake-killed his brothers. Oops.

Theon focuses his mind on what's going on ahead of them, watching what's basically the reverse of what he saw before when leaving his world. The planet before them looms larger and larger the closer they approach, and he starts to make out features on it that also gradually get larger as they move in...

"It feels... strange. Lighter, somehow," he remarks.
morally_cryptic: (Default)

[personal profile] morally_cryptic 2015-10-17 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
"That's because it is, just a bit. It has to do with the mass of the planet. This one isn't quite as big as yours. It might, um, smell different too."

Slightly different atmosphere, different vegetation, and so on.

Anakin just shrugs and leads the way out. Nothing really looks overly different from Westeros, at least. They aren't on one of those planets with oversized, fluorescent plants for instance.

"What do you think?"
