Hurt/Comfort

Hurt/Comfort - Hurt/comfort is a fan fiction genre that involves the physical pain or emotional distress of one character, who is cared for by another character. The injury, sickness or other kind of hurt allows an exploration of the characters and their relationship.

- Post with Character Name | Series in the subject.
- Others respond.
- Roll 1-10 at RNG for a scene, play it out and have fun!

1. INJURY. You've been injured. Broken bones or bleeding out or maybe just a tiny little papercut. The choice is yours.
2. SICKNESS. You're sick and laid up in bed, at home or in a hospital. The severity is up to you.
3. FEAR/ANXIETY. Something is happening and you're scared beyond belief.
4. LOSS OF SENSES. Sight, touch, taste, hearing, smell, etc. You've lost some important sense or ability and now you're left to deal with it.
5. DESPAIR. Nothing is good or right anymore and you can't shake the depression. Maybe that friend of yours can help though...
6. BREAKUP. You've been dumped. You need someone to comfort you, possibly by the one who dumped you.

8. RESCUED. You've just been held captive and/or tortured for however long and finally, someone has come to the rescue.

20. SINS. You're feeling the weight of your sins and guilt clearer than ever. Can someone give you absolution or lessen the ache any?
21. SECRET. It's difficult having to keep that secret of yours, be it a relationship or something you just don't want to share with anybody else. Maybe it's okay to talk about it now though...
22. ADDITION. Babies should be joyous things unless you're in a situation where you know you won't be able to care for them. Either you've adopted or found out you're pregnant.

[ It gets easier for all the kids once they find Josh. Someone calls Bob Washington and he choppers in to this little Ontario police station for the second year in a row and bails all the kids out, one by one. Apparently Dr Hill had been in touch, and he doesn't blame any of them for the ashes of the mountain lodge, certain his son is behind it all.

Josh is pretty used to being ignored by his father, and with sedation heavy in his limbs he doesn't make any effort to get his attention, just mutters about Hannah, down in the mines, how he saw her and she saw him and she made him do it, he had to do it for her forgiveness—

Ashley gets treated to the most of this, since she's the only one that gets a lift back in the helicopter, a choice made seemingly at random although it could be because Mr Washington likes her parents or felt she was a better influence on Hannah than any of her other friends. Either way, Josh sits next to her and mumbles under the noise of the rotating blades, and at some point over Oregon he turns and tries to take her hand like he's only just realized she's there.

Hey. Hey.

[ There had been a sense of urgency those first few hours, the need for action, for movement. It was nervous energy, mostly, as the adrenaline slow evaporated to leave weary, traumatized bodies behind but still on alert, still watchful and scared.

The police station offered warmth by way of blankets and portable heaters, cups of microwaved soup, and a sense of security and safety that came with the crowd of uniforms and technicians that swarmed around them. The guns hanging from the belts of the officers were nice too but she and her friends knew, now, that they would only buy them time to run.

Ashley sat in a comfortable state of numbness, slumped heavily against Chris' shoulder then the wall when he was taken to be questioned by the officers then again when Josh's father breezed into the station, demanding answers. He wasn't brash about it, just worried and oddly resigned. He just seemed so quiet. She was afraid to say anything other than 'yes' and 'thank you, Mr. Washington' when he came to her, later, and offered her a ride home, she simply ducked her head and allowed herself to be bundled into the helicopter.

Time passed, the scenery still blanketed in snow but outline of mountains and valleys charted their progression from Canada back to the United States, and the only noise inside was the rotors and Josh's quiet muttering but blended after awhile turning into so much white noise that it was easy to ignore everything and just watch the slow progression of morning.

Or at least it was until she felt a fumbling hand press against her own. It was Josh, she knew - Mr. Washington was always so careful not to touch them, Josh's friends, especially the girls. - and fought hard not to flinch. She hadn't quite forgiven him for punching her earlier but knew that no matter what he'd done, the elaborate prank he orchestrated, Josh wasn't what she was scared of.

She turned her hand over in offering and waited.
]

Hey, Josh. You...okay?
joshing: (frankly my dear)

[ The laugh he laughs in response is quiet, jittery, and totally without humor, a jagged sawing noise punched out of his lungs. Is he okay? Are any of them okay? It feels like nothing will ever be okay again.

Still, he slips his hand properly into Ashley's and squeezes, once, firmly. It's better communication than he's managed with his mouth since they brought him out of the mines.
]

I need to tell you - I need to say something. I've thought about it... I thought about it a lot. And you've gotta listen.

[ He looks away from her, then, out the window: they're banking, so one window shows the neat patterns of civilization, roads crossed neatly through the brown and green, the blue glint of swimming pools. But the window Josh is looking out is nothing but sky. ]

You've gotta listen.

[ Low insistence, because nobody else has been listening to him. ]

[ It hurts to hear how strained that laugh is, like the air is being strangled out of his lungs. It hurts and drives home just how far her friend has fallen. This isn't the Josh she's use to, the one she knows. It's who he is now, though, and that's probably what hurts the worst. ]

I'm listening. I promise I'm listening.

[ Ashley curls her fingers around his hand, holding tight, cupping her other over the tangled fingers. ]

You can tell me, okay?
joshing: (an offer he can't refuse)

[personal profile] joshing 2015-09-26 02:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay. Okay.

[ There's a real urge to just keep saying that, the fricative k soothing in his mouth, the repetition calming. But he resists, since his dad is basically right there and Josh has gotta, he's gotta keep it together for him. Somehow. Still, he drops his voice, trying to gain at least a semblance of privacy. ]

I think you and Chris are really good for each other. Really good. I wanted you guys to see how much you meant to each other, but I shouldn't have... I'm sorry. I'm so sorry, Ashley, I didn't think I would be but then I had to— I was down there and it was my fault

[ Growing agitated now, voice lifting again in jerky emphasis, his eyes wide in his pale face as he looks at her with imploring guilt. Hannah and Beth had died because he couldn't help them, and then he had to go and get some of his friends killed as well? He's just lucky that some of them had survived, but he still feels like none of this, none of it would have happened if it wasn't for him. Maybe they really could have just had a nice, normal party on Blackwood Mountain, same as every year, safe inside the house. ]
