Screw this drought

the rain meme

Ah, rain—the precipitation that the whole world has a love/hate affair with. It waters the garden for free and ruins baseball games. It cools you off in the summer and it causes more ice and sleet to appear in the winter. Sometimes it is lovely and falls at a decent pace for a few hours, other times, it blasts the whole eastern seaboard away.

Poems and songs have been written about it, people have danced in it, others have cursed its entire existence, and still more refuse to go out and drive in it.

Now it’s time to roll some dice and see what the weather will have in store for you today.

directions

1. Comment with your character, series, preferences, etc in the subject.
2. Roll a number between 1-5 with the RGN for an intensity.
3. Roll 1-15 with the RGN for a situation.
4. Reply to other comments and play the scenario out!
5. Don’t catch a cold!

intensity

1. DRIZZLE ☂ It’s not too heavy or too light of a downpour, just enough to wash away stuff in the air, water the ground, and clean up the streets.

2. MONSOON ☂ It’s horrible and awful! Rain is coming down in buckets, no one can get anywhere, the wind is whipping everything about, and now the cable is out.

3. SHOWER ☂ Reminds you of early spring, doesn’t it? A nice shower to make everything all green and smell fresh again. Lovely.

4. FLOOD ☂ While rain is good, it can sometimes be bad. Grab a boat!

5. CATS & DOGS ☂ You’re lucky with this one. It’s not the worst storm in the world, but it’s still pretty heavy. Be careful when driving!

prompts

1. A DARK, STORMY NIGHT ☂ You know all those stories that start off with a stormy night before something goes wrong: a murder, an attack by ninjas, a crime. It is one of the best known clichés in the world, and you’re stuck in the middle of it.

2. HUMIDITY ☂ It’s that time of the year again when the humidity rises and the rain has two options: make it worse or make it go away. Good luck getting the latter.

3. GRAY RAIN OF DEPRESSION ☂ We all know this one. Stuck in the middle of no where, or right after an argument, or something that leads to angst, the rain decides to express someone’s feelings in a physical form, serious or over the top.

4. QUIET MORNING ☂ Nothing to do, nowhere to be… sometimes the rain is a welcomed addition to a quiet day. Gives you an excuse to stay in, curl up in a warm blanket and a book, maybe a loved one or a cup of hot chocolate. With sprinkles.

5. PUDDLES ☂ After it rains, what is the number one thing you have to do? Go put on some rubber boots and splash around of course!

6. SUDDEN STORM ☂ It might have been predicted, but sometimes storms just sweep in and do their thing with little to no warning. Hope you’re not outside.

7. THUNDER & LIGHTNING ☂ Loud, surprising, scary, ominous, comforting, fantastic to watch or listen to… some like thunder and lightning, others not so much. Of course, if this happens before a big confrontation, the universe is telling you something.

8. CAN’T GET WORSE ☂ You did not say that. You did not just say that. How many times does this need to be seen in movies and books before anyone learns?

9. STUCK ☂ No, no, no, no. This cannot be happening. What happened to the ten percent chance of rain? You forgot your umbrella and now you’re stuck in it!

10. RUINED PLANS ☂ You had all these wonderful plans to go outside, have some fun in the sunshine, do some errands, maybe a date… and the weather goes against them.

11. DANCING ☂ Sometimes rain is a cause for celebration, or you just feel like doing something spontaneous. Grab someone to join you and get wet!

12. RAIN BATTLE ☂ The most intense, important battles happen in the rain. Verbal spars, punching someone in the guts; it’s all dramatic and climatic. And no one slips.

13. DATE ☂ Aww, don’t let the weather ruin your date! It can be really romantic, being out in the rain, and it’s always fun to go with the flow.

14. A DAY INSIDE ☂ Sometimes, it’s just better to stay inside and enjoy something simple and easy like board games or catching up on TV shows, or maybe the bills.

15. WILD CARD ☂ Was there something I missed? Did you want to roll again or choose your own adventure? Go for it!

There were some drawbacks to living on an island in the south pacific... The weather could get nasty. Really nasty. Of course, with International Rescue tracking every storm that could lead to a rescue on the planet, they were more than informed when one could be brought to their very own doorstep. Their home had been designed to take the brunt of whatever was thrown at it, but the pool side furniture? Not so much.

The wind was sending Virgil's hair every which way and he could feel rain starting soak his shirt. He was outside doing his best to stay on his feet as he worked on stowing away the BBQ, pushing the picnic tables to where they wouldn't blow away and getting the other bits of various outdoor furniture safely put away.

All that was left was the folding lounges, which sometimes he wondered why they bothered keeping where they did. Thunderbird 1 always sent them skidding.

Everything was getting louder; cracks of thunder echoed through the sky and the surf crashing against their rocky cliffs of their island. Yeah, this was going to be some storm alright.

And of course, it happened while John was visiting the island. It was one of those storms that happened very suddenly, very quickly. EOS was able to give them a head's up as it brewed but with a small ETA to be prepared. All the brothers were busy getting things ready, Virgil had the task of moving the deck furniture, although John had come out and helped once he was done checking on the storm once more. The brunt of it would be there any minute.

As soon as he went outside, he was pelted by rain and wind, leaves and small branches from the trees as they were torn up by the storm. He held a hand out and in front of his face to protect himself as he made his way over to the pool, Virgil grabbing the folding lounge chairs. He always wondered the same given Scott's 'Bird always sent them flying somewhere.

"Virgil!" He called. "The storm is coming in too fast, we need to go back inside!"
heavy_lifting: (Hrm...)

[personal profile] heavy_lifting 2015-07-13 06:55 pm (UTC)(link)
As the wind picked up even more, larger branches were starting to fly through the air. Virgil was getting ready to say to heck with the lounges. He could just throw them into the pool? Fish them out later? That didn't seem like the worst plan, though Gordon might complain later. They wouldn't blow away, if nothing else.

It took a moment before he realized there was yelling behind him. He wasn't sure which brother it was, but yeah. Inside? Yeah. Yeah, that seemed like it'd be a good idea. "Hang on! I'm coming!" he called, moving near the edge of the pool, unceremoniously dumping the lounges he'd grabbed into it. WELL. There. Now to get back in--

The thought wasn't finished as he felt a sharp blow to his head and something crashing into him and a rush of water around him.

John just barely got out of the way when he saw a tree that had been torn up from the ground fly into their pool deck. The branches were slamming into the pool, the trunk laying across the deck and John groaned softly as he picked himself up. Slippery concrete and pelting rain hurt. But, when Virgil disappeared, John's eyes widened. He was already at the edge and he didn't see anything near the tree. Was he in the water?

He didn't think twice about jumping in, partly glad it was closer to the deep end so he didn't have to worry about smacking into the bright yellow chairs. He was no Gordon, but he swam as fast as he could to the dark shape near one of the chairs. He wrapped his arm around Virgil's broad chest and he pulled his brother up. He swam close to the edge and away from the tree, gasping as he broke the surface. "Virgil? Virgil! Answer me!"
heavy_lifting: (Come again?)

[personal profile] heavy_lifting 2015-07-13 07:36 pm (UTC)(link)
The world had suddenly gone really quiet, almost peaceful. Too peaceful. What happened to the storm? Was he... sinking?

He was sinking.

He was in the pool.

He was drowning in their own damn swimming pool?!

Panic rose up, but he couldn't seemed to move. Shock? Something foggy and red was in the water above him. He... was drowning. He was going to drown. After all the dangerous rescues and close scrapes, Virgil Tracy, designated pilot of Thunderbird 2 was going to die drowned in a pool. He might've laughed if he could have.

Oh god. Oh god... No... His brothers. Scott... No he had to fight! He couldn't drown. He tried to move his arms again. It wasn't enough. Shit.

Everything was going dark. Something touching him. Arms around him? Gordon?

He'd blacked out when John had managed to pull him to the surface. He didn't answer; he couldn't.
ew_gravity: (And leave tear drops everywhere)

[personal profile] ew_gravity 2015-07-13 07:44 pm (UTC)(link)
No, no no no. No! When Virgil didn't answer, he knew he had to act fast. It was bad enough with the blood trailing down the left side of his head. They were smack in the middle of the pool and John kept a secure arm around Virgil's chest, his unmoving chest. He pulled and kicked at the water hard, his breath harsh and quick against the pelting rain and leaves. His face was going to be full of scratches by the end of this but that didn't matter with his brother unconscious like this.

He got to the stairs and hooked his hands under Virgil's arms, pulling him backward out of the pool. His body got heavier as he did and his arms shook as he struggled to lay him down as gently as possible. He was strong, they all were, but Virgil was the biggest out of them all. He was heavy. Finally, he turned his head and bent down. When he didn't hear or feel his younger brother breathe, he moved. He pressed his hands, one on top of the other, to middle of Virgil's chest and began compressing.

"Virgil, c'mon!" The head wound worried him, but he needed his brother breathing before attempting to get that taken care of. His shirt was already stained pink from the bloody water, but he took no notice of it.

Apparently, today was going to be freak John out day. The gash on his head was bleeding, but the water was making it seem worse than it probably really was. It was, the lack of breathing that was certainly the main issue, and apparently he was being stubborn, because that wasn't happening yet either.
ew_gravity: ('Cause I'd get a thousand hugs)

[personal profile] ew_gravity 2015-07-13 08:04 pm (UTC)(link)
His brows furrowed as Virgil continued to not breathe. He hadn't been in the water that long, why was this happening? John knew why, but that didn't help him any more as he continued to provide CPR. The others weren't even in the house or he would call for their aid, they were all on the island somewhere. They should be returning now, but who knew how long that would take.

John stopped and moved back to Virgil's head, tilting his head and chin up to help clear the airway. On any other day, they would joke about this sort of thing. But it was really happening, his brother was going to drown if he didn't get the water out soon. He sealed his mouth over Virgil's and blew into his lungs, he did it twice before pulling back to try chest compressions again. "Breathe, Virgil, please!"
heavy_lifting: (Whoa!)

[personal profile] heavy_lifting 2015-07-13 08:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Something was touching his face then pressing into his chest. There was a voice. He... wasn't dead? Virgil's body convulsed as water forced it's way up from his lungs and he choked, eyes briefly flying open before scrunching back up as he coughed and spluttered, desperately trying to draw in air.

The need to get off his back and roll over so he could breath was overwhelming, and he did so, hands supported him while he coughed and choked deeply, more water being expelled. He'd managed to inhale a good lot of pool water, it seemed. His breaths were shuddering, laced with more coughs, but he was breathing now.

"O-Oh god," fell from his lips. He was alive. He hadn't drowned in the pool, but he nearly had. The rain was pounding down now and the wind relentless. He was shaking from shock and cold, but it told him he was alive. One of his brothers had saved him.
ew_gravity: (From ten thousand lightning bugs)

[personal profile] ew_gravity 2015-07-13 08:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Once the water came out and Virgil convulsed, he let out a cry of relief and quickly helped Virgil turn over to expel the rest of the water from his lungs. He held Virgil to keep him from falling over again. Then, he was shaking from shock and cold. They both were. He almost lost one of his younger brothers and it scared him.

"Let's forget the deck furniture and get you back inside," He finally said, he also wanted to get that head wound checked out. He grabbed Virgil's arm to help him stand, slinging that arm over his shoulders. Keeping focused on the task allowed him to stop thinking about what he almost lost. For now.
heavy_lifting: (........)

[personal profile] heavy_lifting 2015-07-13 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)
The pool always made him think of Gordon first, although being rescued from anything tended to draw upon his childhood and the big brother that looked after them all. He was faintly surprised when he realized the person holding him was neither, it was his other big brother; it was John. The faint surprise was quickly forgotten for the immense wave of relief. The hold might've been to keep him steady, but he leaned into it, as he knelt there, still softly gasping.

"J-John... Y-yeah," Virgil agreed full heartedly, his voice unable to even stay steady, as he struggled to his feet. He was thankful for the help, leaning into his older brother.
ew_gravity: (And leave tear drops everywhere)

[personal profile] ew_gravity 2015-07-13 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
He grunted as he held his brother up and helped him back inside. Being inside the warmth and dryness of their home was needed. Once inside, he led Virgil straight to the infirmary. It was slow moving, he didn't want them to trip and Virgil wasn't exactly steady anyway. They both weren't. Chlorinated water wasn't the worst to let dry on them, so they could save the warm shower once they weren't close to getting hypothermia. Although, that was probably an exaggeration.

"Still with me, Virg?" He asked as he got Virgil over to one of the beds. He wasn't sure if it would need stitches yet, but he wanted to try and stop the bleeding first if possible.
heavy_lifting: (Hrm...)

[personal profile] heavy_lifting 2015-07-13 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Rain water had probably already washed away a good bit of that chlorine anyways. Virgil was definitely glad to be out of it though and inside, it was warmer, but he was still trembling. Yeah, hypothermia wasn't really in the cards, but being cold definitely wasn't helping with the shock. Showers could wait. He just wanted to be dry and warm about now.

"Yeah, I'm here," he mumbled as reassuringly as he could. Virgil was quite here and had no plans on blacking back out.
ew_gravity: (That planet Earth turns slowly)

[personal profile] ew_gravity 2015-07-13 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Good. He set him over at the bed, making sure he was fully seated before going to the cabinets for the first aid. His own face was throbbing from the biting wind and cold, but he'll clean himself up after Virgil was done. Pulling out the gauze and disinfectant, he came back and wet one of the pads. Taking a dry one to wipe off the excess going down his face, he placed the other one right on the spot. It was going to sting, but better than nothing.

"Sorry, Virg."
heavy_lifting: (What was that?)

[personal profile] heavy_lifting 2015-07-13 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
He sat hunched on the bed, clutching the edge and looked a bit surprised when John was wiping blood from his face. Virgil hadn't even realized he was bleeding. Guess it had been caused by whatever had decided to tackle him into the pool. Geez...

It did sting, but he barely flinched. He had too much else going on to let some disinfectant phase him. Anyways, it probably needed it. No complaints here. "Hah, it's fine," he said, managing a weak smile.
ew_gravity: (From ten thousand lightning bugs)

[personal profile] ew_gravity 2015-07-13 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
He was always the stoic when it came to pain, John would give him that. Still, having it sting was no fun. And it was going to need stitches given it was going back into his hair line, and rather deeply too. He wanted to check and make sure Virgil wasn't concussed as well. But he would check that later.

"Do you know what happened?" He asked, knowing the answer. But he wanted to make sure Virgil was okay. And also to just get him talking a little more. It helped calm his own nerves and let him know if anything was wrong. He figured only a branch from the tree smacked Virgil, but it was still from a falling tree.
heavy_lifting: (...Ah.)

[personal profile] heavy_lifting 2015-07-13 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
He had to stop himself from shaking his head. "Not really... Rather than dropping the lounges back on the patio, I thought I'd just dump them in the pool--weren't gonna get blown off the island that way," he said, with a faint chuckle. "Then... I don't know. It happened pretty fast. Something sure tackled me. Next thing I knew, I was surrounded by water and realized I was drowning. In our own pool."

Virgil had a slanted frown at this point. "I'm never going to live this down, am I?"
ew_gravity: (It's hard to say that)

[personal profile] ew_gravity 2015-07-13 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
John wasn't able to stop the small smile at that, but he shook his head. "That depends how you want to tell the others. What tackled you was a tree. The wind tore it straight off the ground and onto the deck. I think it was only one of the branches that got you and knocked you into the pool, but that's what happened. May have nearly drowned in our own pool, but it was through no fault of your own."

His smile dropped momentarily. "I don't think I could make fun of you for it, not after worrying I wouldn't be able to resuscitate you." It made his hands shake just thinking about it. First their mother, then their dad and now... his eyes were shining with tears at the mere thought and he had to bite his lip to prevent himself from making a sound. He hadn't even realized he stopped dabbing at the wound in the process.
heavy_lifting: (........)

[personal profile] heavy_lifting 2015-07-13 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, that was good to know, he guessed. It had been a freak accident. The fact it was in their own pool seemed like something maybe he'd laugh at one day, but the look on his brother's face he saw now. He'd still been sitting here shaking, but it only got worse as the gravity of what had happened took hold again.

His mind had screamed that he'd been about to die and it seemed he really had come uncomfortably close. "I... I'm sorry, John," he murmured, it both frightened and hurt him to think he had scared his brother that way, even if it had been entirely accidentally. He found tears prickling in his eyes too. "If you hadn't been there... but you were. I-I'm so glad you were." Glad really didn't cut it, but it's what slipped out.
ew_gravity: (That planet Earth turns slowly)

[personal profile] ew_gravity 2015-07-13 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
John didn't care if that wasn't the right word. They were both glad he was alive.

He nodded and went to get the needle and thread for stitches and some local numbing agent. "Me too."

He didn't want to think about what could have happened. He wanted to focus on the here and now. That Virgil was alive, if bleeding, and the others should be returning soon. Of course, now he worried about them. He hoped they were okay and nothing like this was happening to them.

Virgil only needed a couple stitches, it just looked worse than it was and soon, he was finished taking care of his younger brother. "There. Should heal in no time."
heavy_lifting: (Ooookay...)

[personal profile] heavy_lifting 2015-07-13 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Meanwhile, Virgil peeled off his wet flannel shirt and had pulled the blanket of the infirmary bed up around him, trying to get some measure of warmth. He sat quietly, entirely allowing John to fix him up. He knew taking care of head wounds were important. He was a bit glad it was mostly hidden in his hair.

Some measure of shock was still coursing through him. They lived rather dangerous lives and he knew well that it meant putting his own life on the line to help others. That was something he'd come to terms with and accepted long ago, when they began. A freak accident at their own home though? That rattled him more than he cared to admit.

His gaze refocused when John had finished and he gave a nod to John's words. "Yeah. ...Thanks, Big Brother." A faint smile appeared. Wasn't often he called John that, Scott tended to hear it more, but they both were, was the fact of it, and something he felt very reminded of this moment.
ew_gravity: (Default)

[personal profile] ew_gravity 2015-07-13 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
It was something they all had to deal with. The very real reality of not only their own lives, but the lives of others. John didn't experience it often, given he was usually away from the action, but that didn't make the responsibility of getting those rescues going any less important. And now, he had a very real reality check with his brother.

John blinked with slightly widened eyes at being called Big Brother. It... had been awhile since he had heard that. It was usually directed at Scott. His face softened and he smiled back. "Anytime, Little Brother."

As he put the medical supplies away, he shivered and nearly dropped it. He grunted and continued on. He was really cold and it annoyed him. He also didn't have two layers of shirts and a blanket. But he would get dry clothes on once everything was handled. "Did you want to stay down here? I don't think the others have returned yet, we might be able to get changed before they get back."
heavy_lifting: (What was that?)

[personal profile] heavy_lifting 2015-07-13 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
His smile grew a little more at the expression on John's face when he called him that and got 'little brother' directed back at him.

Slipping from the blanket and grabbing his wet flannel shirt from where he'd strewn it on the bed, he tentatively slid off the bed. He felt a little more sure on his feet now, it seemed. "Not particularly," he replied, not feeling like he really needed to stay down here. He'd much rather go change, and curl up with a blanket and some hot chocolate... or coffee. Either could be good. Anything to relax, be warm and stop trembling. The infirmary? Not the most comforting place.

Besides, if he stayed down here, Scott would flip out more than he was already going to. That was going to be fun. As it was, his brother was only going to take one look at him to know something had happened.
ew_gravity: (As they tried to)

[personal profile] ew_gravity 2015-07-13 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
John may not have a gash on his head, but it certainly looked like he had a fight with something as well. But he mostly just wanted to stop being cold as well. He reached down to untie his shoes off at least, getting the socks in there as well. No use in slipping.

"Good, I think dry clothes are in order. I'll clean up the mess we made in the living room while you get settled," He replied, still keeping to Virgil's side as they made their way back up to the kitchen. There was going to be a trail of water, but John would mop it up once he was fully dry.
