(revamped) CAUGHT IN THE RAIN

CAUGHT IN THE RAIN MEME

It started out quietly, and then, quite suddenly, you're caught in a storm with an endless downpour. Time to quickly find cover! Nothing much to do but to wait it out. Where is the rain happening? How are you coping? Why are you out when it hits?

RULES
• Leave a comment with your character's name and fandom.
RNG for a number between 1-10 to get your scenario. Mix and match!
• Have fun!
SCENARIOS
i WHERE:
001 PLAYGROUND |
Well, you can try to hide under the slide or maybe in the jungle gym... at least you're some place fun?
002 PARK |
Always happens, caught outside trying to take advantage of the weather... and it ends up pulling a fast one on you.
003 STORE FRONT |
Better hope they have an awning you can take advantage of.
004 BEACH |
Not exactly the best place to be during a rainstorm, however it is possible to get caught in a sudden storm.
005 FOREST | Mud, bugs and all the rambler's paths are washed away so you don't know how to get out.
006 SKY |
On a plane? A pegasus? You were there when the first drop fell.
007 EMPTY CITY |
Maybe it was a zombie apocalypse or WW3. It's safer outside when all the nasties take refuge indoors.
008 AT SEA |
Nothing is worse than an unexpected freak storm here. Except sea monsters.
009 TEMPLE |
It's beautiful, but leaky.
010 WILD CARD |
Your call.

ii HOW:
001 TREE |
Not the best cover, but it'll have to do, stay close to the roots and you won't get too wet.
002 UMBRELLA |
Most conventional... Kinda boring. But it works.
003 NEWSPAPER |
Not permanent, but it'll have to do. Good luck.
004 SHIRT |
Well... y'gotta do what you gotta do.
005 MAGIC |
Wave that wand or chant a spell.
006 CARDBOARD | Out of a dumpster. Nice.
007 LEAVES |
Not under a tree: just one really huge leaf.
008 CAVE |
Not very deep, but it keeps off the worst.
009 NONE |
You don't need cover, screw convention.
010 WILD CARD |
Your call.

iii WHY:
001 REJECTED |
Welp. Rejection sucks. And no one will see you crying in the rain.
002 WAITING |
For the bus? For someone else? For some revelation? What are you waiting for.
003 MELANCHOLY |
Sometimes the best place to feel a bit down is out in the rain.
004 HAPPINESS |
Is everything going your way? Are you singing a refrain while walking down the lane? Just singin. Singin' in the rain.
005 ANGER |
WELL YOU KNOW WHAT. SCREW YOU TOO, RAIN.
006 ACCEPTANCE | You had to be here anyway, it wasn't a choice.
007 SCIENCE |
Everyone else is inside but you've got work to do.
008 ACCIDENTAL |
Lost track of time? Forgot your coat? Oops. Now you look like a wet rat.
009 KISSING |
They kissed you. How are you supposed to leave them alone out here after that?
010 WILD CARD |
Your call.

park and waiting

[personal profile] riverborntorun 2014-07-29 02:50 am (UTC)(link)
River Song didn't dally in parks for no reason. She'd left one of her many messages for the Doctor, and was simply biding her time until he showed up. The thing was, when she wasn't jumping out of a spaceship or being waited on my hallucinating roman soldiers...the whole waiting thing was boring.

Her mood hadn't improved when the rain started to fall, and she contemplated leaving a new note and bailing before the weather wreaked havoc on her hair. At last she heard the sound of foot steps, and with a smile, turned around.

"Hello, swee-...Clara."

"...River?"

Clara stopped in her tracks at the sight of the woman she had met once. The Doctor's wife with the big space hair. The first question that went through her mind was 'How?' But, she had learned a long time ago that nearly anything was possible when you encountered things from the Doctor's life. Things that shouldn't have been possible but were. Including meeting with someone who... Clara decided it wasn't important.

Instead she stepped up to the woman with a smile, tilting the red umbrella to cover the two of them. Then she glanced side to side, half expecting to see some version of the Doctor roaming around. Why else would River Song be in a park?

"Hi." Clara offered with a smile, a tad nervously and awkwardly. She had only met River the one time after all. "I'm guessing he hasn't shown up yet, yeah?"

With a grateful nod that she was being saved from resembling a drowned rat, River happily accepted shelter under Clara's red umbrella. Indeed she recognized her, suggesting in her timeline they had also already met.

"He has such terrible timing," she said with a shake of her head, a few water droplets dripping from her droopy wet curls and onto her jacket shoulders. "Not to mention he hardly ever answers his phone. One of these days I'll get a message to his psychic paper. Then he can't ignore me, hah."

Tentatively moving her arm to as not to jostle Clara's which held the umbrella, River tried to scrunch her curls and wring out the moisture from them. "I'm sorry dear, where are my manners? How are you?"

Which made her wonder when exactly they had met before. If River recognized her without being dead, then they had to have met somehow. Or River somehow heard about her. The Doctor had talked about how his timeline was all jumbled with River's. Clara just never thought that would also include her timeline.

She side stepped a bit to give River some room to wring out her curls. She frowned at that and shook her head. Right, that wasn't going to work. Clara had already decided that the two were going to go back to her place where River could use a proper hair dryer. Then, if need be, River could use her mobile to call their missing Time Lord. Hopefully he'd answer then.

"Alright, I suppose." She gave a tentative smile. Which meant things really hadn't been alright but she wasn't about to say that on her own.

If a certain bowtie-wearing fella were here, he'd simply say "River always knows". And as far as this River is concerned, she has met Clara. But the circumstances of which she certainly isn't telling, not yet.

"Thanks, sweetie, but I'm afraid it's a lost cause," she said with a shrug, agreeing that the current arrangement wasn't going to help her hair. Before she could come up with an alternative, River caught the unusual state of Clara's smile, prompting her to arch one eyebrow.

"Are you sure about that?" She didn't mean to put the other woman on the spot but there was no stopping River once she was on the trail of something. "Sounds more to me like you're holding something back."

Of course River would of picked up on that. She was just as perceptive as the Doctor. Actually, she was probably more perceptive. River would notice things he wouldn't because she was a woman. Which, Clara was still embarrassed to admit she had thought River was a male at first. It wasn't her fault the Doctor never told her much about the professor!

"I'm not sure if things are going to be alright." Clara corrected herself, tapping her fingers on the umbrella handle. "Everything sort of changed in two days. I've accepted it, yeah, of course I did. It's just... getting used to being so different."

What she really meant to say was 'I've got no control over the situation and I've no idea where to step now.' The Doctor regenerating wasn't the problem, and she knew it deep down, but it was what she latched onto. It was the fact she had no idea if the Doctor had still been the same man. She had seen how old he had grown on Trenzalore. He was there for so long. Would he really be the same man? She hadn't thought the man she knew would look her in the eyes, lie to her and abandon her so many times. Part of her probably knew that he would, but was in denial that he would ever do it. Or maybe she really didn't know him as well as she thought.

Most likely she was entirely over thinking it all.

"Change is a very frightening thing," River began slowly, her eyes watching Clara closely. She was both a woman and a colleague of the Doctor, so she certainly could pick up on bits of Clara's personal turmoil. "When you know it's coming it's a little easier to prepare for. But what you're going through sounds...more sudden. Like the universe threw you a curveball and knocked everything off-balance."

Change was something River had learned to accept, but she didn't always like it. She was a restless adventurer, never wanting to stay too still, but that didn't mean she didn't prefer a few things to remain familiar.

"And correct me if I'm wrong but you're probably feeling a little lost about the whole thing." With a sympathetic smile, River indicated for Clara to walk with her. "In which case I say let's tackle this like the mature, grown women we are - how do you feel about ice cream?"

Lost was a great word for it. She figured she'd figure it out as she went--as always. River was really the only person in the universe that she felt like she could talk to about these things. Vastra treated her like a child and Jenny supported her wife (which was totally fine, by the way) and Strax was Strax. Besides the three of them were in the Victorian Era and that hardly helped her in the Twenty First Century. Something just told her that River wouldn't mock her or treat her as some sort of inferior being because she was struggling with it all.

Clara fell into step with River, holding the umbrella over the two of them. "Ice cream sounds absolutely brilliant. I could of done with that a week ago." Though the chips and coffee with the Doctor was more than fine. It wasn't perfect, but it was great.

She kicked a small rock down the way as they walked. "I was worried that he wasn't the same man anymore." God, she hoped River picked up on her difference in words. Being the Doctor still was one thing--being the same man was completely different. "That he'd changed completely because it'd been so long since he saw me. I thought he wasn't the person that I..."

There was a stop in her words then. She had told Jenny liked, but once Jenny had tossed the response of 'I don't like her, ma'am. I love her.' Clara had been forced into a bit of a corner that she didn't want to be in. Still, she shook her head and looked up at the taller woman.

"I thought he wasn't the person I cared about anymore."

So it was something that been bothering her for a week, River noted. Her mind rattled through possibilities like she was searching a filing cabinet. Family crisis, lover, problem at work - what did the girl do for work? She couldn't recall.

Her mental rummaging through possibilities didn't go on for much longer. Her brain closed all the other cabinets and pulled open the large drawer labeled "Doctor". River stopped at that last part and looked at Clara dead-on, her eyes soft and sad. "Oh, we're going to need an awful lot of ice cream, aren't we?"

With a sigh, she slid one arm around Clara's shoulders and gentle took the umbrella with her other hand. The younger woman's compassion to her in the rain wasn't forgotten, but right now River realized Clara needed more help than she did. Her heart would eventually bounce back as it always did. But hearts were far more fragile things.

"Tell me what happened. No, hang on, wait 'til we're inside."

Which begged the question if River had (or would) actually ever ask what her life outside traveling with the Doctor was like. Clara had the feeling that usually people just dropped their lives and traveled off with him to the stars. That would be lovely, but, she had too many responsibilities.

A sad laugh escaped her and she instantly felt embarrassed. "Possibly. I don't know." Which took quite a lot for her to admit, so River should feel rather confided in.

Clara let go of the umbrella. There was really no point in arguing with a woman who knew far more of her timeline than Clara herself did. Instead she crossed her arms under her chest, feeling rather pathetic then. Then again she had felt pathetic since the Doctor sent her back to Christmas Day with that turkey. Things were better. They honestly were. It was just... sorting it all out in her head.

"We might be there awhile."

River let out a wry laugh. "I haven't got anywhere better to be, do you?" She let her tone turn a little more gentle to put Clara more at ease

"Come now, no need to feel uneasy. It's a difficult topic I know, but trust me when I say you're not the first one to go through this. Traveling with the Doctor is complicated enough, but when feelings are thrown in...well, let's just say I could write a book on the subject. Actually, I think I technically have." Not that her diary was ever going to be published for public consumption.

"Anyway, I think there may be a shop up the road here that sells ice cream - assuming I've got my dates right of course. Or would you prefer more privacy?"

Clara shook her head with a smile. "I haven't got a message from the man who likes to drop in whenever he feels like it. So, no." She scratched the side of her neck and still felt a tad awkward. It was that whole not being sure what to say in regards to the timeline. Things were ridiculously complicated when they didn't need to be.

"I'm not sure how much I'd want to write down about it in a book." Jumping into someone's timestream and seeing every one of their lives might not be something that the universe should know about. Clara wasn't even sure if River knew about it. Probably not, considering where River was in her timeline when the English teacher had met her.

"That's fine." She nodded. "I had the privacy of Madame Vastra to talk about it and it didn't go as well as I would of liked." Being basically put on the spot for judging someone she cared about was extremely rude. "Most people don't even really listen to the other conversations going on around them anyways. Have you ever noticed that?"

[personal profile] riverborntorun 2014-08-28 05:16 am (UTC)(link)
"It's not easy," River found herself admitting aloud. "But since I don't travel with him like you do - linearly, that is - I haven't much choice. My diary keeps things safe."

She nodded. "Yes, I've had the pleasure of meeting Vastra myself - brilliant woman, loads of hidden talents. but I'm afraid empathy with humans is not her strong suit." River smiled at Clara as they walked closer to the shop. "I have, in fact. Sometimes the best way to hide yourself is in plain sight, wouldn't you say?"

She looked up at River, giving a sympathetic smile. "Traveling linear with him doesn't always help, you know."

Then she paused to think about that. "I'm not sure I've figured out how to do that yet. Vastra saw right through everything."

It was incredibly annoying. Clara hated when people could see past her walls and the bubbly image she projected out. It made things a bit easier after they were harder, but that didn't mean she always appreciated it.

River gave a half-smile, appreciating the sympathy. She knew Clara had a point, but still - wasn't that part of the human condition, envying those who lead the life you can't? Perhaps that was only her condition.

"She makes a living out of deducing people, don't forget," she pointed out. River knew a fair bit about reading others as well, though she tended to use them more tactfully than Vastra did. "Our faces give away so much without us realizing it. Micro-expressions, you see. Learning to restrain them is..." River paused. "It takes...practice." She said it with the finality of someone who's been there.

It depended on the life and who you were, really.

River had a point at that. "Maybe she should learn not to read someone then." It was a rather childish thing to say she knew it. Clara didn't appreciate how she was treated one bit because she was being human about the whole situation.

Though she looked back up at River as her hand reached out for the handle of the store. "I take it you've got some skills in it then. Why?"

[personal profile] riverborntorun 2014-09-01 05:05 am (UTC)(link)
River held her tongue. She knew well enough how Clara probably felt, but on the other hand, she knew that such a thing for Vastra would be like telling the Doctor not to go poking at things. Against her nature.

"Lots of reasons," she replied vaguely, pausing in the opened doorway to close Clara's umbrella and give it a brief shake. "The big one being the fact it makes me a convincing liar." She gave a wry smile at Clara as they stepped inside. "You still don't know much about me yet, do you?"

Clara made a face at her vagueness. That was always the state of things when it came to River. However, she did understand why. There was no point in bringing it up.

"A few things here and there." She nodded and stepped away from the umbrella. "Professor of archeology, the Doctor's wife, and the timeline that doesn't really match up with his. He never told me much. The Doctor, he... has to be in the right place to tell me something, I think. Otherwise it is just guessing based off what I know."

Oh, no, I hope you're okay!

[personal profile] riverborntorun 2014-09-08 08:15 pm (UTC)(link)
River chuckled as she stepped in with the umbrella. "Good thing for you you're clever, it's been my experience that when it comes to me, there's never 'a right place' with him." She shook her head.

"I'm sorry, that sounds arrogant, doesn't it? I mean that me and him - it's all very complicated. Some days we don't know how to explain it ourselves." She looked around at the available booths, pointing towards one in the back as a suggestion.

"What you probably wouldn't be able to guess is my...old line of work, which is the reason I'm such a talented liar."

A brief sigh came from Clara, because she knew that River was ultimately right. 'A right place' seemed all but impossible to find with the Doctor. Even when she thought she had found her standing and place with him.

"Everything is complicated with him." Clara shook her head. "It takes a lot to get him to talk sometimes. Prodding, and he has to feel like he can trust that information with me. Not sure why he's still worried about trust given what we've been through."
