Announcement: New Mod

Good evening everyone! This is just a quick post to everyone to announce a change in management here at Bakerstreet!

I only just was given the reins to this community, so bear with me while I get settled in and whatnot. There will be a problem/spam reporting post going up on my journal by the end of the night, which will be linked in the comm's user info. I'll also be adding a 'suggestions' post for changes you might want to see in the comm (whether you might want to see certain memes only allowed to be posted once a week, moderated posting/not moderated posting, etc). In the meantime, feel free to pm me with any questions or concerns, or just comment here.

More updates will come in the next day or so.

Thank you for your time.

Both are now on the comm's info page.

Taking this chance to thank you for the weekly roundups. It's really good of you to diligently do them even if you're not an official mod here.

Hello, new mod!

Just my two cents to say that I'd much prefer for the meme posting to stay unmoderated.

People being able to post whatever meme they like when they like is one of the major selling points of this meme comm, I believe.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-07 12:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Just my two cents, I am tired of repeated memes when the same meme is two pages back from two days ago/a few hours earlier if people bothered to look.

And the harassment that has occurred on memes the past few months makes it worth it to have a moderator.

Unfortunately, the one thing I've overwhelmingly learned from bakerstreet over the past few years is that no one is ever happy.

At any given time, half the community is complaining about too many smut memes, the other half is complaining about how the gen meme alternatives have difficult to tag premises, and pretty much everyone is always at each others' throats over casual disagreements in how they want to play their pretendy funtimes.

I've watched the community as a whole howl for a moderated community in which every post has to be approved before it goes up, and then when they got it, everyone was immediately up in arms about how it was the worst thing ever. Predictably, once it went back to the way it originally was, people started complaining about that.

So honestly, I almost feel like the best thing any prospective mod can do is nothing at all. It's impossible to please everyone, and on the Internet, that is a cardinal sin. As long as harassment in the comments of memes, posting the same meme seven times in a row to be a jerk, and putting intentionally provocative or disgusting images in memes are shut down swiftly, that's probably all any prospective community mod should really be worrying about. Trying to do any more than that is an exercise in frustration and futility.

This sounds like very good advice to me. Too much control, and people will just go elsewhere. Too little moderation of the ridiculousness that some people get up to (spam, harassment) and...well, eventually people go elsewhere or just give up.

I know I, personally, like the freedom to just think up a meme and post it without having to wait on someone to approve it. And certainly I expect a mod in charge of a community as active as this one could easily get burnt out on having to keep an eye on every little thing.

Seems simplest to stick to the most necessary of things.

(also hi, welcome! I got to rambling in response to this person. :) )

Freedm of posting or not, I think the Love Hotel should stop with cross posting memes for a bit.

I agree so much. Having to skip past their stuff in search of something I'm actually interested in for my guys has gotten irritating.

can we turn off captcha for anon comments? Keep the IP logging on to discourage spammers of course, but I feel like captcha doesn't do much aside from be a hindrance. There are a handful of fairly popular memes that make use of the anon feature and it becomes annoying to have to fill it out and squint at it to try and decipher what it says all the time.

Or at least switch it over to the easier question style

(Anonymous) 2014-07-07 02:18 pm (UTC)(link)
IIRC "turning off" captcha is really more like delaying it and eventually it comes on anyway.

Hello and welcome new mod!

Back in May, I made a post on rpanons about whether I or someone else should become a Bakerstreet mod.

The post is here: http://rpanons.dreamwidth.org/44566.html?thread=130347286#cmt130347286

I don't know if you're the person I talked to then, but I wonder if you'd like any help with things around here (taggings posts, for example).

If you rather mod alone, that's absolutely fine, too.

I'd love it if there was moderated posting turned back on. Hire some new mods if you think you can't approve them swiftly enough. People here can't be assed to check if a meme has been posted less than a week ago or they'll just make a meme that's similar but not different enough to post. Also I think limiting the memes posted daily to around 2 per day would encourage people to not post and run and to not drop the thread when the next shiny comes up.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-08 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
Chiming in to say I agree with moderated posting. I don't mind if, when I want to post a meme, it doesn't go up RIGHT THIS SECOND.

I don't think there should be a limit of memes per day though, just a limit per genre/theme (smut, shipping, gen fluff, whatever, you can use your best judgement to determine what counts as the same genre/theme) otherwise certain genres/themes will be all we'll ever see since they'll get the daily meme slots first.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-09 05:35 pm (UTC)(link)
This. This should also counteract the people who post memes just to get gen/smut/whatever memes off the front page.

[personal profile] tuningfork 2014-07-08 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think moderated posting worked at all well the last time it was tried, so I disagree with that idea.

I also think that trying to tell which memes are too similar would probably be much too confusing, because some people would say that memes A, B and C are almost identical, while other people would say that no, they aren't similar at all just because they share some themes, etc. And what would happen when a certain meme was inspired by a different one, but had a different slant?

And there also would be people who just complain about a meme because they didn't like it for personal reasons, and were grasping at straws for any reason to complain about it.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-08 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
And what would happen when a certain meme was inspired by a different one, but had a different slant

then they should wait to post it until the one it was inspired by has wound down. it's pretty self-explanatory.
