hurt/comfort meme

Hurt/Comfort - Hurt/comfort is a fan fiction genre that involves the physical pain or emotional distress of one character, who is cared for by another character. The injury, sickness or other kind of hurt allows an exploration of the characters and their relationship.

- Post with Character Name | Series in the subject.
- Others respond.
- Roll 1-10 at RNG for a scene, play it out and have fun!

{It's the same for me with SPG! I definitely want to know more. And yes, it's in Paris, specifically in the year 1910. Guess I'll start the scene, but if there's anything you'd like to have changed, just pm me and I'll edit it!}

Francœur did not see everything that had happened. If he were more aware, he could have attempted to catch the falling man. When he turned around, it was already over. Seeing the suit, his mouth dropped in horror as it came to him that a man must have been hurt. The disguised monster clutched his white gloved hands close to his chest as he fretted over what he should do. Other people would know better than he would, but there was no one else around.

He uttered a set of inhuman clicks. Hesitant at first, he made his way by the man's side. However, now that he was closer he saw it was not a man, but some sort of strange automaton.

"Prr?" he chirped curiously. He leaned in closer, his large eyes taking in every detail on the metal man's face. It looked so human.

{Technically The Spine was around then... but I don't have icons for his early days.}

The fall just may have damaged the metal man, and they way he lay sprawled on the pavement didn't look comfortable at all. On the other hand, an automaton might not have much concept of discomfort. The way some of the limbs were bent was downright impossible for a human body, barring severe injury, yet everything appeared to still be connected.

While the sculpted metal plates of the automaton's face were under scrutiny, the eyes opened abruptly, glowing green, and flickered a few times before staying lit. Then a low bass voice groaned out, "...ow."

So much for it not feeling pain.
smallest: Quote by Emile ("The monster that we created.")

He reached out to touch the metal cheek. For such a large monster, he had a gentle touch. It relieved him to know that this was only a machine that fell; if it were a human, he doubted anyone could survive. However, machines were unalive and unfeeling, so he thought.

So it came as a huge surprise to Francœur when his eyes suddenly opened. He shrank back, his high-pitched rasp in sharp contrast to the metal man's deep voice. Wait, deep voice? Machines did not talk, nor express pain. What was going on? He returned to his side. The green light washed out the faint orange glow of his own eyes. He clicked and chirped curiously at the man on the floor. Oh no, he must be in pain. Francœur looked at the twisted parts of metal and he winced. His hands twitched nervously, as if he did not know what to do with them. Should he try moving him?

The machine seemed dazed, which was not a state a machine should ever be in, but the faintly glowing eyes focused in on the strange face, and one black eyebrow arched expressively. "W-what happened...?" Slowly, with a quiet ratcheting of gears and little steam-piston hisses, the automaton began to pull his limbs to more ordinary positions.

{ooc: Before I forget, would you prefer I avoid spoilers? And if you do want to avoid them, I should warn that there are some spoilers in my icon keywords.}

Dazed, disoriented, this machine seemed to be many things a machine should not be. He curled his hands close to his sides as the gears turned and steam hissed. He watched in fascination and he began to smile. Francœur was glad to know that he could fix himself. When asked what happened, all he could do was gesticulate falling by using his hands and then he shrugged. Aside from his fall, he had no idea; out of the two of them, he assumed the automaton should have been the one to know.

Once the metal man seemed to have everything in place, Francœur stood up, and up, to his full height. In the dark of night, his wide eyes had a glow that might be sinister to some, but his smile was kind. He held his hand out, offering to help him up. By the soft chirp he uttered, and the glance to his legs and back to his eyes, he seemed to be questioning if this machine was well enough to stand.

{Don't worry about spoilers, and I'll try to find the movie to watch this weekend!}

Green glowing eyes blinked at him, but he took the offered hand gently, sitting up with the same grinding of gears. The movement made him grimace, black-rubber features expressive in the metal face. Having landed on his back, the metal man seemed to have damaged paired metal blades down his back. Steam trickled through his clothes around them in the cool night air. "I... thin-n-nk I can walk, but..."

{I hope you find it! It's such a cute movie.}

A human might have difficulty seeing in the dark, but not Francœur. He saw the grimace on the strangely expressive automaton. He chirped high and fully of worry as he got back down to his knees to see the damage done to his back.

Steam? He was at least familiar with this sort of technology in the sense that he knew of its existence; nowhere near a level to feel confident enough to make repairs himself. Cautiously, he reached his hand out and lightly touched the damaged protrusions on his back. He knew that this machine could feel pain so he did not dare try anything to hurt him; his touch was as gentle as ever.

He rasped softly as he bit his lip against his sharp crooked teeth. This put him in an awkward situation; usually he relied on the help of others, not the other way around. It made him nervous, almost scared but he never thought to abandon him. His fingers and mandibles twitched and clicked as he thought about what he could do. Firstly, if there were anything he could do for him, it would not be found out here in the cold. He chirped at the metal man and he raised his hand. Francœur pointed at a door. Above it, there was a sign that read, Entree des Artistes. It seemed, despite the sign, Francœur wanted to bring him inside. It was only a few steps away; he would not have to walk very far.

Francœur was doing something else, too. He hunched down, until he was about a head lower than the machine. From the way he looked at him and tipped his head, he indicated to the human machine that he could lean on him for support. He was, after all, a very large creature and while he may not be able to carry his entire weight, he could at least make it easier.

"...They're heat sinks..." Getting to his feet involved more grinding sounds and steam, and the way he moved hinted at damage unseen. Help would be appreciated, possibly even needed, but he hesitated to lean his full weight on the curious creature. The automaton was absurdly tall, if a little lanky. Once on his feet he glanced around for his fallen hat, swayed, and quickly took the offer of support as he almost tipped over. "You... want us to g-g-go in there? I'm-m... not in good shape for a show, n-now..." The vocal glitch was an annoyance, but hopefully repairable along with the rest of him.

[personal profile] smallest 2014-06-17 08:44 am (UTC)(link)
Heat sinks. He had not the slightest clue what that meant. But questions could wait until later. He watched the automaton get to his feet, his keen ears knowing that the sound he made was not a good one. As he stood beside him, Francœur softly chirped with the realisation that they were around the same height. That was a first; no one else around here even came close.

He dipped as the weight came down on him. While he certainly felt it, he was strong enough to support him. He quickly looked to see what the machine was looking for, and he stretched his arm out to get the hat off the floor. With one arm wrapped around the machine's arm and another wrapped around his waist, he held onto him to ensure he would not fall.

The door was only three steps away. He tried to guide him there. Yes, it was a cabaret, but he did not want to bring him to see a show. All he could do to try to convey this was to shake his head and hum in a downward intonation, to say that his assumption was mistaken. Without letting go of the machine, two insect-like arms snaked out from under Francœur's suit and he unlocked the door with a set of keys he had on him. The long, thin black claws pulled the door open and indicated at another door down the small hall. The sign was too far and too small, but perhaps a machine could read Monsieur Francœur engraved over the door. There was no show, only a quiet room for the metal man to rest.

He chirped and looked up to get the man's attention on the doorframe. It was not big enough for either of them; they would have to duck to avoid hitting their heads.

The big metal automaton wasn't used to encountering many people his own height, either, but tonight he was very grateful for it. Even if doorways were a problem. He ducked, easy enough to do when already being fully upright was a feat.

"You're... you w-w-w-w-w-w-w-" One hand slipped from his rescuer's support, and he punched himself lightly in the jaw, which made him sway all the worse for a moment, but at least broke the vocal glitch. "You work here? You're a performer, too?" It wasn't seeing a show he meant, a moment ago. He meant he wasn't up to putting one on. What else would such a sharply dressed automaton be made for, but to entertain?
smallest: Quote by Lucille ("Do you have a name?")

[personal profile] smallest 2014-06-18 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
He chirped high in surprise when the machine hit himself in the jaw. Even if it was not a very hard punch, it alarmed him. His arm tightened around his waist to steady him. The mandibles under his chin twitched as he hesitated before finally focusing on the actual question asked. He nodded and he opened the door to his dressing room.

There was warmth and light here, as well as flowers and musical instruments. The furniture here was sturdy enough to support Francœur, so perhaps it could withstand the weight of the automaton. He led him to a seat and one of those long, black insect-arms placed the automaton's hat atop his head. It was a very nice hat, after all. Although, if there were a reason a machine would be dressed so nicely, he would not know. He stepped back to get a look at the automaton.

"Kkrrrr," he chirped at him, looking lost. He had no idea how to help him, but surely he could do something if he had guidance. Francœur waited for instructions about what to do next.

Ordinarily he might have been more cautious about the furniture, but then, ordinarily The Spine didn't do a lot of sitting down outside of his own home. He sunk into the chair gratefully, knees clicking, and let out a quite gush of steam once he settled, like the broken-down machine he currently felt like he was.

"Do you... have a screwd-driver? Pliers? Any kinds of tools?"
smallest: Quote by Raoul ("He's got your eyes and my hairy legs.")

[personal profile] smallest 2014-06-19 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
His eyes widened with recognition. Those words he knew. While he did not personally own them, there were a few tools lying around the backstage. He nodded. Taking off his white gloves, hat, and mask, he then held up his four arms with his claws spread out in a 'wait here' sort of gesture. He left the machine to search around the cabaret.

When he returned, he set an array of tools on the table before the mirror. He also gently set down two fine glasses filled with water within arm's reach of the machine. While he did not know if the automaton drank anything, surely that steam must be coming from somewhere. He waved at the glass and chirped softly, inviting the machine to take it if he needed it.

He took one of the larger screwdrivers and pliers in one claw each. He watched the metal man and waited for further guidance.

The display of insectoid legs left one black eyebrow rising on the metal face, but any skepticism vanished into relief at his rescuer's return. He needed no more invitation than a gesture, and picked up one glass straight away, chugging the contents in one long go. Restocking his boiler was as easy as it was for any human to drink water, but there was no need to swallow.

The second glass could wait for later, and The Spine turned to appraise himself critically in the mirror. "Thanks... Have you... ever worked on anything like me before?" Since Francœur didn't seem to speak, sticking to 'yes' or 'no' questions seemed advisable.
smallest: Quote by Lucille ("Too eccentric.")

[personal profile] smallest 2014-06-19 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
He smiled as he watched him drink the water. So at least he did something right there. It was interesting being the one to take care of someone. While he was still a little nervous, it warmed his heart to know he could help in some way.

Yes or no questions were easy for him and he shook his head. His expertise lay in creating and performing music, nothing like this. Had the machine been a broken piano or a guitar, he might have had a better chance at knowing what to do. As it was, Francœur must rely entirely on the automaton's directions.

"All right... I'll start on my elbow, and maybe you can l-l-learn by watching..." He sighed a little trickle of steam, and reluctantly began undoing vest buttons. One elbow seemed to be stiff, sleeve torn by the impact and scrapes in the metal plating beneath. It was easier, somehow, to expose how robotic he was under the clothes to someone who was not themselves human. "I'm not sure what to do about my back..." He was half talking to himself, to fill the silence that was for him slightly awkward. "W-was that your name, on the door? You're a performer here?"
smallest: Quote by Lucille ("It means honest heart.")

[personal profile] smallest 2014-06-19 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
He nodded, that sounded easy enough. He arranged the tools neatly and waved at it to invite the automaton to use whatever he needed. Those huge bug eyes of his looked observant enough; he was entirely focused on helping him. Because he was not human himself, Francœur held no judgement about the automaton's body. He smiled, trying to be positive about the whole ordeal.

He chirped affirmatively and to answer his question further, he reached one of his long arms to get a poster from under a clutter of flowers. There were a few posters just like this one around Montmartre advertising his and Lucille's performances at the Rare Bird. He pointed at his name and his picture, then to Lucille's name and the picture of the beautiful woman next to him.

Vest, then shirt, were laid carefully across his own lap. Beneath it, silver paneling loosely mimicked human musculature, and blue glowed from the seams between the plates of his chest, lit from some power source within. He was dented and scrapped, bolts knocked loose, and no telling what damage might be inside, but he'd repair what he could.

As he picked up the screwdriver, though, he leaned forward a little to look at the poster, curious. "You're Francœur, then? I'm-m-m a musician, too. But I don't get my own-n dressing room." He smiled a little, in pain, but trying to be friendly.
smallest: Quote by Lucille ("He wouldn't hurt a tiny fly.")

[personal profile] smallest 2014-06-21 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
Musician? Francœur chirped, immediately responding with interest. He wondered what sort musician he was, if he played instruments, sang songs, or even both. The machine had soothing deep voice, perhaps he was a baritone. He wanted to hear him sing, it must sound lovely.

"Aaah," the monster sang in a sweet, perhaps unexpectedly high-pitched voice. He then gestured his claws at the automaton that asked him if he could sing.

Francœur took another screwdriver as close to the same size as the one the machine took. As much as he would adore hearing more about the metal man, he needed help first.

[personal profile] the_spine 2014-06-21 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
One black eyebrow rose, but The Spine was just as happy to work on patching himself up. Damage sensors had seemed like such a reasonable thing to have, until he learned what pain was. Arm straight out, he began to tighten damaged screws with the aid of the mirror, making sure his new friend could see how it was done.

"My creator made several of us, to form a band. I perform-m with my friends Rabbit, and Hatchworth. We haven't been outside the United States in a while though."
smallest: Quote by Madame Carlotta ("Genius needs no explanation.")

[personal profile] smallest 2014-06-21 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
That did not go the way he planned, but that was to be expected when he could not talk. He leaned to see at a better angle. So far, it all looked simple enough. He moved behind him and searched for more loosened screws, ones that did not look like the automaton could reach. While he focused on tightening the screws, his purple tongue stuck out of his mouth. With his way of treating everything so gently, he did not scratch or screw anything on too tight.

Well he knew the names of the rest of his band, but the metal man here was still a mystery. He chirped in a short, questioning tone that seemed to be asking for his name.
the_spine: (Serious)

[personal profile] the_spine 2014-06-21 05:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Starting on the elbow had been the logical choice, since it was one of the few damaged spots he could reach himself, and that leaft plent of work for Francœur, so it was good that he was so quick to catch on. There wasn't much to be done about the dents and scrapes for now, though, and his back remained a mess. It would take more than a screwdriver to fix that. He sighed steam in relief as screws were tightened.

"Mm? Oh! I'm The Spine! Sor-r-r-ry... must've hit m-my head, too..."
smallest: Quote by Maud ("You protect a monster?")

[personal profile] smallest 2014-06-21 07:41 pm (UTC)(link)
He pleasantly chirped when some of the steam hit him. It sounded more like a cat's purr. As a flea, he preferred the warmth so it felt nice.

The Spine, it was a very direct sort of name. He chirped in a brief, happy tone; however, Francœur took his comment rather seriously and he checked his head. His claws ran through his hair with a tender touch as he checked for any loose screws and he tightened whatever he could find. After much careful work, this should be the last that he could do with the screwdriver.

"It's... er, it's a wig..." The Spine hesitated, steam trickling from his cheeks, as the giant flea ruffled his hair. It was fairly realistic hair, but a wig nonetheless. Reluctantly he lifted both hands, damaged elbow still stiff and grinding in protest, and unsnapped the wig from hidden connectors. Beneath his head was smooth shiny silver plating, like all the rest of him, but any dents to the back of his head were minor.

"Probably wiring loose inside, but it'll have to w-wait until I can get back to the manor.." He gazed at his reflection in the mirror in mild dismay. Shirtless and hairless, he was left looking so terribly like a machine.
smallest: Quote by Lucille ("It means honest heart.")

[personal profile] smallest 2014-06-22 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
He gasped in surprise as the wig came off. It was more realistic than any wig he had seen before, but that could be because the wigs he had seen were more eccentrically designed. He looked at The Spine in the mirror as well as he himself, without a mask or hat. Two of his four claws rubbed the top of his own bald head.

"Prr," he chirped with a gentle, warm-hearted smile. It was okay; it did not matter how he looked on the outside. Francœur tapped his carapace, over his heart. The inside, the soul, mattered and though he was a machine, Francœur knew there was a soul within him.
