Dystopia

The future is what you make of it
We've all read the stories and seen the movies; the future is coming. It may not be pleasant, but we can't escape it.
This is a world where cities have built upon the bones of themselves for so long that no one remembers what 'dirt' is unless you mean 'grime'. A place where the rich and privileged touch the sky, the middle class dreams of the stars, and poor downtrodden have the power to change things if they'll only reach for it.

Rules:
  • Post with your character/canon/preferences
  • This is a meme that encourages AU craziness but allows for canon integrations so decide what you'd prefer
  • Read through options and choose what you like, or use a handy RNG if you're stuck
  • Include a starter if so inclined
  • Tag out, have fun
  • Change the future
RNG AIDS: Class (1-12), Prompts (1-25), Optional (1-5)

Class
  1. High/Royalty: You are superior. You grew up in the sky gardens above the murk. You may be genetically refined, enhanced in utero to be the Best, or maybe you were just born to a good name, but you have standing and money. You can afford trips anywhere, offworld, that floating beach, psych diving, you name it and there is no obstacle.
  2. Upper Echelon: You exist as a buffer between the truly elite and the 'lower' classes. Perhaps you are a companion blessed with beauty and grace, skill enough to entertain and distract your benefactors. Or maybe you are the man who ensures 'daddy's' company doesn't founder while the heir entertains themselves with drama and indulgence. Either way you have a benefactor, someone who can be convinced to spend money on you, which is almost as good as having funds yourself.
  3. High middle class: You are the rung below the upper crust. Perhaps you had a family name once, or maybe you're a burned out sports hero, but you have a well paying job in upper management and you still get some nice party invites when someone wants to talk about the good old days.
  4. Middle middle class: You have a steady, monotonous job between the number drones and the bosses. It's not always a comfortable place but you can afford to bioengineer a kid or two or have a few nice nights out on the town a month.
  5. Lower middle class: You're hanging on by the skin of your teeth but there's enough money to stay ahead of the bills and the neighborhood you live in is safe enough to walk home through as long as you keep an eye out.
  6. Number: You were born to parents with no standing or wealth to their name; in fact they were in debt to their eyeballs and you, their child, get to pay that debt. You were assigned a number when you were born and slotted into a company queue. You may have a name but no one uses it outside a few friends and you do all the boring, grinding drudge work of the company you were given to, but at least you never have to worry about room and board. That's all handled by whoever holds your number.
  7. Pariah: You were born or exist off the grid. You can't earn money legitimately but there's plenty in the under city who will pay you despite that. Maybe if you keep your nose clean you'll save up enough to hop a colony ship off world, or maybe you like it down in the crumbling murk!
  8. Created: Perhaps you're a robot, maybe you're an experimental hybrid, no matter what you are you were made and you might have rights or you might not. Depends on what you did to define yourself now doesn't it?
  9. Alien: You're not from around here. Time travelers, aliens from beyond the known space, dimensional observer, whatever. You don't have a citizenship card and you may or may not need one!
  10. Supernatural: Vampires, fungus zombies, werewolves; they're all people in the city. No reason to hide any more, you can avoid sunlight, take out loans from blood banks, and even star as television heroes if you want. For a price though.
  11. Enhanced: Supermen, Wonderwomen, laser eyes and healing factors; they're cropping up randomly as genetics mingle and rays filter through the city layers. Maybe it's the water?
  12. Transitory: Your fortunes are sliding and changing. Maybe you're on the way up, maybe you're on the way down, but like is changing from what you knew.
Prompts
  1. Robbery: Maybe you're the target, maybe you're the villain, but one of those upper city banks is being robbed blind.
  2. Mix and Mingle: You're trying to make connections above or below, but this blending in thing is harder than it looks!
  3. Numbers unite!: Who cares if you're a Number yourself? That's just wrong and people should know better! Time to lift your voice, a stun wand, maybe a handy electric grid, but your voice, the voice of the PEOPLE, will be heard!
  4. Pet: Somehow you've attracted someone's attention. Maybe you're being kept in caged splendor, close enough to reach the clouds as long as you keep your owner happy, or maybe you're a topsider being held below as a trinket!
  5. Earning a living: Really, you're just trying to get by! You don't want to lose your space in the apartment, you might end up moving to the true under city and you've heard the stories of the levels below!
  6. Saving them: You're a doctor, a nurse, a pastor, anyone who will cross social lines to reach out to others in kindness.
  7. Seemingly saving: You have an ulterior motive for your good days. Maybe you need to count the number of pariah in an area so they can be rounded up and numbered, maybe you just like to hunt below, either way your smile is false.
  8. What right?: Who put them in charge? The city would run smoother if you were the voice they listened to!
  9. First contact: Aliens exist, and now they are on the streets, observing all the people. Maybe you're the alien?
  10. Mixed community: The city has held everything from AI systems to aliens, to sentient caterpillar. That can lead to some tense situations sometimes!
  11. Forbidden love: You fell for that dancer below, or maybe a street sweeper can't take their eyes off the window shopper...
  12. Nature hates you: It's tired of putting up with scabrous cities and chemical shifts in the atmosphere and now there are monsters/storms/etc. Anything that the world can throw at you to show displeasure!
  13. One of Us: There's a new drug out, or an addictive computer game, and maybe there's alien worms crawling in people's ears. Whatever the reason, people are losing their individuality, sliding into a hive mind and not coming back out. Maybe you were tempted and you're safe as a part of the whole or maybe it scares you!
  14. Dirty Job: But someone has to do it. You're a cleaner of some sort. Maybe you recycle garbage, maybe you take out bodies and feed them into food processors, what ever you do isn't pretty and it might not be legal...
  15. Treasure Hunters: There's a lot left below, down in the bones of the city. Far below even the dark tunnels of the pariah lies old town. The old labs, the old stores, just old, but not forgotten. Not by you.
  16. Princes in Hell: Better to have power, even if it keeps you from the sun. Crime has evolved so much in this world of the future, and there's enough to go around. Granted, all teh old favorites are still around as well.
  17. Cults are your FRIEND!: With so much diversity in this city it's inevitable that the strangest things are getting a following. Maybe you created a world where sentient pineapples can see the future, maybe you emulate the Great Yeti and never, ever, shave. Regardless you're in, or leading, a faction of believers!
  18. SCIENCE!: With cutthroat megacorprations holding the pulse of the city science is a good business. Maybe you're a good company employee, maybe you're an independent looking to save the world or make a name for yourself. Whatever your drive SCIENCE is happening!
  19. The Sound of Hooves: No one ever said cowboys died. Some people are still walking the streets in dusters and pulling pistols at noon, metaphorically speaking. They are the law, their own law, and they're holding the city to it. Vigilantes and terrorists, or maybe just true Good Samaritans.
  20. Copper Badge: Law is tricky in a city where so many businesses have their private army security men and laws that apply inside the walls of their holdings. Still, the average Joe deserves to be safe and you do your damnedest every damn day because you love this city somehow.
  21. Brave New World: You've never seen anything like this! Wherever you're from, controlling home, a lab, that cage down on forthieth, well, this is all new to you!
  22. Elite: You (and possibly your team) are the best, you work for the highest bidder, or you take the jobs that amuse you, hell, maybe you have a MISSION, whatever, you kick ass, take names, and you can do it in or out of the atmosphere!
  23. The End is Nigh!: You've seen it, somehow, the City is going to fall and take all it's citizens with it! What do you do now?
  24. Vacation!: Maybe you just stepped into a VR parlor for a bit, or maybe you managed to have memories implanted of a beach far off, whatever you're doing it isn't normal for you and you're trying to relax!
  25. Create your own adventure: Really, go for it, I'm done with this section of the list!
Extra Flavoring
  1. Bionics!: You have machinery bits in you! Scanner eyes? Quicksilver legs type G76? You are not factory spec anymore!
  2. Pets: This is a big, crazy city and it has some truly weird animals in it! Maybe you adopted a cricket lizard, maybe there's a trained mud puddle that follows you around. Go nuts!
  3. Wifi Everywhere: The chip in your head lets you surf the net from anywhere!
  4. Being Watched: Something is watching you. From drains, from taps, you swear there's eye stalks and the landlady won't believe you. Just carry on.
  5. Etc etc etc? Make up your own kiddos I'm done here.

((11/25? :D?))

Ever have one of those days when someone runs into you? You're minding your own business and there's the sound of feet desperately slapping the walkway, eking every shred of speed from the electric sidewalk, and then boom, someone knocks into you?

It probably should have happened like that. The girl running and trying to weave through people certainly was going to slip any moment and take out a whole slew of commuters. She was weaving on her feet and barely standing, but she plowed ahead anyway, the cut end of a strap on her arm indicating she was probably running away from the guys in body armor that were just a touch further down the sidewalk. Dodge, weave, try to...

...her eyes widened in panic some when she saw a metal man instead of squishier beings before her but a blink, a determined look, and she dashed through him with a whispered "sorry" and a gasp that indicated he wasn't pleasant to pass through at least?

Yeah, it was just one of those days really.

Re: D'aww... They make an interesting combo.

[personal profile] the_spine 2014-06-10 11:21 am (UTC)(link)
As she gets close, the big silver robot actually grimaces, black-rubber-lined features expressive. It's not that he's afraid of being run into, precisely, because that tends to end badly for the other person. And that's what he's anticipating, knowing he is not quite fast enough to get out of her way.

And then she's through, and gone, and he takes a slow half-turn to see her running off, unsure if his optic receivers are malfunctioning. Then he turns back again, as the armor-clad men pull up close. Something so basic as a robot should be under orders to get out of their way immediately, and he makes a grand show of trying to... with a lot of uncertainty, moving to one side that just happens to be the wrong one and end up blocking their way, then the other with the same effect, steam pistons hissing with each big clumsy step. He tips his hat and apologizes profusely, as the man in the lead finally shoves past him, a little awkwardly since it's like trying to shove past a narrow piece of wall. He watches them go off up the street, eyes glowing faintly green, face now an expressionless robotic mask.
pryde_and_grit: (Can't touch me)

Or so we can hope! Onward, to adventure (or trouble)!

[personal profile] pryde_and_grit 2014-06-10 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Kit didn't dare glance over her shoulder; it would slow her down and when the only thing left was running? Slowing down was bad. She hoped the robot was alright though, she knew her powers could cause electronics to go a bit wonky and she'd hate to think that an artificial citizen could die because she could phase now!

And at least his actions bought her a bit of a lead because the guards were grumbling and cussing by the time they managed to get around the man. Ah, behind those guards though was a man in a lab coat and a scanner that went absolute nuts when it got a clear read on The Spine. "Ah...hmmm." This was interesting. As much as he seemed inclined to continue on the odd trail, he had very high phasic readings! "She went through you? Are you experiencing any ill effects, synthoid? Damaged circuitry? Are your speech centers intact?"
the_spine: (Serious)

Why not both? ;D

[personal profile] the_spine 2014-06-11 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
"...Who?" He blinks, but his face remains largely a blank. It's almost too convenient, sometimes, that people don't expect a robot to be much more than a simple-minded machine. As much as it pains him to pretend to be less than he is, there are times that call for the act.

He only hopes it's just her presence that's making the meter go off, and not his own Blue Matter core, which is something of a family secret. "Excuse me sir, I have a task to complete..." The bass voice is polite, but flat, emotionless.
pryde_and_grit: (Can't touch me)

Both IS a good option isn't it? >.>

[personal profile] pryde_and_grit 2014-06-11 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
The man with the meter blinked at the less than engaging answer, then scowled, "Obviously the speech centers are fine. Your serial number synthoid?" He'd take it down and follow u pwith the bot later. They'd need to do some damage control after an event like this.

"Now, bot, I'm in a hurry." Before those damn guards lost the trail entirely.
the_spine: (Necktie)

Always.

[personal profile] the_spine 2014-06-11 11:29 am (UTC)(link)
He rattles off a number, albeit reluctantly. The Walter Family has developed a (perfectly reasonable) fear of men coming knocking on their doors to ask about their oldest, most unusual robots. On the other hand, that means they've become adept at handling those inquiries, and usually manage to come off as an eccentric family with some very old robots who are glitchy with age and of very little interest to anyone, anymore.

He also tips his hat, keeping up the programmed-to-be-polite act, and gets out of the way with slow, exaggerated care.
pryde_and_grit: (Can't touch me)

Then by all means lets!

[personal profile] pryde_and_grit 2014-06-11 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
The man recorded the number with another brief flash of irritation and then set his meter back on the trail of the running girl, "this is going to be a...why are you all stopped?!" Why yes he was yelling at the men in armor that were milling around not far behind the robot.

Apparently their quarry had managed to trip and fall down through the concrete and wires beneath people's feet. Wasn't that lovely? "You ROBOT! You're being requisitioned by HF Inc! Find us an access point!" Why not? He was the closest resource and with how robots were programmed it wasn't like he could say no...right? HF would compensate the owners for damages, naturally.

He blanched, eyebrows rising in distress, mouth twisting down. He didn't mean to, but damn his programming, so old and layered that facial expressions were as instinctive a reaction for him as for any human. That was also, he knew, the giveaway that he was far different from an ordinary robot. He was trapped, now.

"Access point-t-t?!" The tall silver man took one step back, alarmed. He couldn't run- he was never a fast runner, being made of at least a ton of metal, and requisitioning was all too likely to lead down a very bad path of having his programming picked apart, one way or another.
pryde_and_grit: (Can't touch me)

[personal profile] pryde_and_grit 2014-06-12 06:31 am (UTC)(link)
For a stroke of luck the man who'd 'claimed' him for now was not facing him. He managed to miss that cascade of facial movements, though he was quick to turn and glare at the silver bot, "to the sub levels, synthoid!" That was the problem with artificial beings, they needed so much damn instruction to achieve the smallest task!

Unfortunately, they also tended to be stronger and able to download grid maps which would be a great aid in the sublevels.,

What choice did he have but to go along? Perhaps there'd be some chance to get away later, if he continued to play dumb. Quick to let his face drop back into a blank, the tall silver robot began to head for the closest way below... with slow, exaggerated steam-piston tread. He'd go, but he wouldn't go quickly, and there was nothing to give the impression he was capable of any greater speed.
pryde_and_grit: (Can't touch me)

[personal profile] pryde_and_grit 2014-06-12 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
There were some (rather insane) upper level citizens who paid to go on tours of the sublevels. For a megacity built upward on the bones and debris of previous century advancement the layers below could be fascinating. With a tour guide.

Without a tour guide the undercity warrens were a labyrinthine mess. Lighting was sporadic at best and water collected, slick and oily, on the walls. Drafts that funneled from the above and below stirred wispy, tattered posters and advertisements like seaweed reaching for those slowly thumping down into the depths. "...are you rated for demolition, bot?" the lab tech with the meter sighed. "We may need to make our own path..."
the_spine: (Serious)

[personal profile] the_spine 2014-06-12 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
"No sir. Sorry." He was tall, and mostly steel, but he was also fairly old and on the lanky rather than brutish side in build. He was far, far stronger than a human, but not designed to smash through brick walls. Of course, he also wasn't planning to make this any easier for them than he had to. Glowing green eyes pierced the darkness easily enough, though, even if they didn't give much better lighting for his unwelcome companions to follow. Mostly they just cast a faint green pall on the murky scene.

He only hoped he didn't step on any places that wouldn't hold his weight, even if it would probably take a few men down with him.
pryde_and_grit: (Can't touch me)

[personal profile] pryde_and_grit 2014-06-12 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
"Brilliant," the tech grumbled. "Alright, when we track her down your job is to hold onto her and not let go then. You're denser than we are and that'll hinder her." Especially if the girl was flagging.

Hopefully anyway. Why hadn't they installed a brain chip in this latest batch?!

"There sir!" A flicker of motion bled into an abandoned corridor full of store mannequins in various states of decay. One guard hit the lead model with a taser dart, making the old polyfoam flicker and catch fire.

"...idiots."
the_spine: (Serious)

[personal profile] the_spine 2014-06-12 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
He was startled, but a moment later he lurched into motion, heading toward where the flicker was seen. His optics processed things far better than human eyes, and his own presence in the way might make them hesitate to fire anything else that way.

He had been ordered to hold her, after all, and to do that he could get between her and them. The robot was fairly clear about whose side he was on, here.
pryde_and_grit: (Can't touch me)

[personal profile] pryde_and_grit 2014-06-12 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
"Let the bot through!" The tech hissed, waving the guards back as he kept his eyes glued to the scanner. "No, wait, left!"

"Right, I think I see her..."

"...MY FOOT'S STUCK!"

He had good eyesight so he could probably see the frightened, but determined looking, girl just barely passing through a wall behind the tech now. Apparently she'd decided to make a stand.
the_spine: (Serious)

[personal profile] the_spine 2014-06-12 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Head swiveling this way and that, he made an uncoordinated lunge that failed to even come close to her, but swung his arms close enough to some of the armored men to make them duck defensively. If chaos was what the girl intended to cause, he was happy to help. It was easy enough to pretend to be slow and clumsy, and his sheer size and the range of his gawky arms sent men scrambling to get out of his way as he waded among them in apparent confusion.
pryde_and_grit: (Can't touch me)

[personal profile] pryde_and_grit 2014-06-13 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
In amusing contrast to the swinging robot, the girl was a flickering ghost, doing her best to stick to shadows and to snag guards and phase them through the wall or floor when able. She was laughing though, a tired, amused sound as she danced through the growing chaos. She was honestly going to root for the robot at this point!

More importantly though was that scanner. The tech was standing close to the flickering, burning mannequin so sneaking up on him was a little harder to do. "Come on 117, you know what the discipline block is like. Just stop this and we won't have to send out the retrieval squad..." the tech begged. "Seriously, you don't want that."
the_spine: (Dramatic lighting)

[personal profile] the_spine 2014-06-13 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
Banking on the girl moving fast enough to fool the Tech's eyes, the silver robot swung that way next, whether it was at all the direction she was in at the time or not. One wide arm swing, and he was just hoping he could make knocking the thing out of the man's hand a successful accident... if he did, one heavy steam-powered misstep would have his foot on it once it hit the floor.
pryde_and_grit: (Kitty glancing over shoulder)

[personal profile] pryde_and_grit 2014-06-13 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
She did one better than moving fast, when the robot swung she dove forward, tackling the tech around the waist. If the automaton could handle the scanner she was going to drop the man she was holding down another level!

Granted, it took her a minute or two to climb back up through the floor, but once she did she offered the silver man in the dim maze a smile, "thank you." Provide he wasn't intent on dragging her back topside she was just going to sit on the ground and...try to catch her breath okay?
the_spine: http://reymonkey.deviantart.com/ (I cannot advise that.)

[personal profile] the_spine 2014-06-13 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
He was more than a little surprised to see man and girl drop through the floor before his eyes, but swung around with the dumb robot act for a moment more until he realized all the men had been incapacitated. Left more or less alone in the dark, he sagged slightly and hissed out a sigh of steam, then startled when the girl reappeared headfirst through the floor.

"Are... you all right, Miss?" The bass voice was respectful, but a far cry from the flat, emotionless tone he'd used around the tech.
pryde_and_grit: (Kitty)

[personal profile] pryde_and_grit 2014-06-13 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
Well, there were stranger things in this world, certainly, than an odd girl who could climb up through floors? Like an apparently steam powered AI. Generally one expected more processing power to be necessary for the type of personality that leaked into it's...no, him? His? words.

Good question though. "I'm...I'll live. Are you okay? I know I fritz electronics and you're not hurt, right?"
the_spine: (Smile!)

[personal profile] the_spine 2014-06-13 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
...Or something that went beyond processors altogether, but that was a family secret he was under pains to keep from anyone who might misuse the knowledge.

"N-no worse off than usual. I'm just old." He put a hand to his chest, motions slightly jerky in a stop-and-start sort of way, but he was certainly more expressive than might be expected, and then he smiled, easy and natural as any man on the street.
pryde_and_grit: (Kitty)

[personal profile] pryde_and_grit 2014-06-13 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
Well, stranger things. And everyone had their secrets, right? Right.

"Not that old," she noted with a grin, "not the way you move. That was art." She'd been someone else before all of this, and while he hadn't danced his moves had been pretty well choreographed!

That or she was seeing things, it was dim down here after all. "I'm sorry they drafted you. I can...probably get you top side? Before more come?"
the_spine: (Friendly)

[personal profile] the_spine 2014-06-13 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
Steam trickled from the vents in his cheeks, and he rocked on his feet, resettling his weight, or just restless. "You'd be surprised. But yes, we should m-move, quickly."
