FORMAL OR INFORMAL, WITH MUSIC OR WITHOUT, YOU COULD BE AT A GLAMOUROUS GALA WHILE A SINGER CROONS SOFTLY OR IN THE SILENCE OF YOUR OWN LIVING ROOM. WHEREVER YOU ARE, YOU HAVE THE URGE TO DANCE. DID YOU ASK YOUR PARTNER OR DID THEY ASK YOU? HAVE YOU GOT TWO LEFT FEET OR IS THE VIENNESE WALTZ YOUR JAM? IT COULD BE AWKWARD, IT COULD BE ROMANTIC. EITHER WAY IT'S CUTE AS HELL.

Pretendy a bit AU for The Sign of Three?

Molly saw Sherlock slipping out of the wedding reception and her first thought was to stop him. Her second, though, was of Tom. The good, sweet, slightly dim man she is betrothed to. She smiles at him, but finds the idea of Sherlock leaving his best friend's wedding early, a bit distracting.

"I'll be right back," she says into Tom's ear over the sound of the music. "Need the loo."

And she does head toward them for a moment before following Sherlock's path through the party-goers to the outside. She can see him starting down the path and she almost lets him go, but her mouth is faster than her brain.

"I never got a dance!" she calls to him cheerily. She's not trying to call him out on his early departure or berate him for it. She knows this has probably been a tiring day and she's sure all the change is a bit upsetting too. But maybe she just wants to let him know that someone notices his absence. That she sees him still.

He stops when she calls, turning his coat collar down slightly, but not turning around. "You didn't ask, Miss Hooper."
And you seemed preoccupied, he almost says. Everyone is preoccupied. "Social situations are not my forte, as you're aware and the front can only be kept for a certain amount of time."

And your best friend is married and she's right because everything has changed now, and they won't want you anymore. Oh, stop being so self-centered. Stop.

Breathe.
Someone noticed.

He's not sure if that is a good or a bad thing, or if he wanted everyone to notice.
The idea was to leave quietly.

"I know," she says to both statements. She knew what it would look like if she asked him to dance in front of everyone, even as a friend. If he'd asked her, it would just look like he was doing her a favor. But the crowd is otherwise occupied and a dance doesn't mean anything anyway.

"May I have a dance, Sherlock Holmes?"

She's walked a little more toward him and away from the party.

He finally turns around and looks briefly at the dance hall before nodding.
The music is switching. KC and the Sunshine Band.

It was supposed to be the most fun, he'd actually helped select some of it - merely on some notes and musicality. He hadn't selected all of them.

It's not something slow, mostly in the same note as the previous song though perhaps less ... grim? "I'd be honored, Miss Hooper." He's brightening just a little, starting a bit of a jive, which isn't quite touching, but it's fun.

She laughs a bit and just watches a moment. She wasn't entirely sure until he starts dancing that he'd humour her, but she's pleased he is, a grin forming on her face.

"Being so formal," she says as she starts dancing as well. "Mr. Holmes."

It was a formal day though she supposes. Except for now when they're dancing by themselves in the grass like a couple nutters. It is fun though.

"Everything has to be just right," he says, focusing on staying in rhythm.
Something might seem off, as usual - if Molly sees though he seems rather determined to hide it.

He'd not exactly lost his best friend, but he'd lost something.

"I think everything today was perfect," she says, not entirely sure that's what he's referring to. "Well, aside for the whole murderer in the building thing...but I suppose it's rather fitting for this wedding."

She smiles. She can tell he's off, that something is weighing on him once again. In the context, she assumes it's all the changes a marriage signifies. It seems John and Mary are trying to keep him involved, but things won't ever be exactly the same between them again. As someone whose watched a good deal of her friends get married off, she knows this is true and she feels for him.

"Mm. Thank you." He stops once the song ends, having deleted what was next.
He didn't pick everything for the mixtape.

"We did catch the murderer, like I said. He should have driven faster."
Of course everything about today is perfect.

She stops as well, waiting for the next song, not sure if Sherlock will be on his way now that he's obliged her with a dance.

"Of course you did," she says, with a small smile. "And you really enlivened the whole Best Man speech thing. Really, they're sometimes rather dull."

She had been a bit worried about the whole thing, but aside from a few off comments, he'd surprised the heck out of her with the amount of actual sentiment and really lovely things he said about both John and Mary.

He gives a bit of an awkward smile, and is about to turn to go.
He wasn't that familiar with this particular slower song, and gives a nod.

"Mm. Thank you."
Did he think it would turn out different?

Not really. Just trying to delay the inevitable, not think about it.
It was a bit all sentimental, but what else was he supposed to do? Tell lies?

"You're welcome," she says.

She's not sure if he's going or staying and they're just standing there, so before she can stop herself, she steps closer and puts her hand on his shoulder and reaches for the other. She assumes if he would prefer to leave now, he will just tell her.

He slowly begins to dance, stepping carefully, but he knows where his feet are going. He's been practicing, though - he's only been demonstrating at leading.

Now he has to lead and it's a bit amusing.

She's admittedly not the best dancer in the world, but she did take some lessons in Uni. Enough to get her through wedding season without stepping on anyone's toes. She follows Sherlock well, even if her technique isn't perfect. Weddings are really the only time she gets to practice.

He does dance a bit, removing his hands once the song is finished. "I really must go, that was very nice, Molly."

He likes dancing, even though he considers Molly a bit more like a sibling, it's not non-traditional for siblings to dance, he just - thinks he should leave before anyone sees the whole of the situation and he becomes too vulnerable.

"Of course," she says, putting her own arms back down by her sides. "Thank you for the dance, Sherlock."

She gives him a bit of a sad smile.

"I'm sure John will understand."

She knows that if John hasn't noticed Sherlock's absence yet, he will. But Sherlock had done well today, so she's sure John will not be too put out about it.

He frowns a little. Sherlock thought John wouldn't notice, honestly. He has a wife and a child on the way. He won't have time and it's fine.

"I've performed my duties."
And that's when you exit the stage, and let the focus shift.
John doesn't need him tarnishing anything.

She nods.

"You have," she says. She won't mention that the wedding party didn't usually leave the wedding early, but Sherlock wasn't your normal member of a wedding party either.

"Anyway, I should get back. Tom will be wondering where I've gone to."

"Goodnight, Sherlock," she says. She watches him walk down the path with a bit of a sad look on her face, before turning to go back to the party.
