can't sleep.

the i n s o m n i a meme

It happens to everyone - sometimes, you have nights where you just can't fall asleep, no matter what you do. It could be for a number of reasons, or no reason at all. And this is what's happened now: you've been laying in bed for what feels like hours, just tossing and turning, and nothing seems to help. So what's left to do? Get out of bed and go wake someone else up, of course. If you're not getting any sleep, then why should they?

• Post with your character (note the name and fandom in the subject).
• Other people reply to you by generating a number from 1 to 10.
• Have fun!

01 • FEAR. Maybe you're hearing strange, indeterminable noises; maybe there's a severe storm happening outside; maybe you watched a scary movie before bed? Whatever the reason, you're terrified and it's keeping you awake. You just want to wake someone else up so they can protect you from the monster in your closet.
02 • HUNGER. Your stomach is growling and it just won't stop. Or perhaps your throat is so dry you could cough up a tumbleweed? Well, you've gone to the kitchen to remedy this and hey, that was a pan that just dropped on the floor. It was loud enough to wake the dead! Oops.
03 • PAIN. Your body is completely worn out, be it from exercise, battle, sickness, or what have you. Either way you're in enough pain to keep you from sleeping, so maybe someone else has a home remedy or something, or can at least help you take your mind off of it.
04 • SOLITUDE. For some reason, your bed just feels so empty at the moment. You're feeling terribly lonely and really just want someone to keep you company for a while. Maybe it'd be easier to fall asleep if you're with them...
05 • DISCOMFORT. Your room is an oven. Either that or a freezer. Or maybe this bed is just really uncomfortable? Who knows why you can't get to sleep, it feels like it could be anything. Why even bother trying? Maybe someone else can preoccupy you until you feel tired enough to ignore your discomfort.
06 • PENSIVE. Something's on your mind, and no matter how hard you try to focus elsewhere, it's just not going to work. Your body may be tired, but your mind is incredibly busy and it's virtually impossible to get to sleep. Surely, talking it out with someone else will help?
07 • SADNESS. Something terrible has happened that day, perhaps; or you could just be severely depressed. Either way you're trying your hardest not to cry yourself to sleep, and it's not working at all. Better find a way to get it out of your system somehow; you need a shoulder to cry on.
08 • ANGER. You are just... fuming. Who knows why - that annoying dog is barking again, or maybe the people next door are getting busy and keeping you awake. Whatever the reason for your ire is, you'd better put an end to it so you can get some damn rest already! Go wake up a friend so you can complain to them.
09 • RESTLESS. You're far too energetic to sleep right now. Maybe you're just trying to do so out of necessity - you have to be up early tomorrow! But you just don't think you'll be able to fall asleep for a while now, so why waste the time trying to sleep when you could be doing something else? Namely bothering someone else - you're totally jealous because they're getting more sleep than you.
10 • WILDCARD. Choose one of the options above, or make up your own scenario.

[Having trouble sleeping, Molly? Would a nice, calming Irish lullaby help?]

No problem! I've only had Molly for a short time too. :)

Ever since Sherlock came to her with what she's labeled in her head as THE PLAN (All caps, sometimes with an added exclamation point.), Molly hasn't been sleeping well. Anxiety, nervousness, fear for Sherlock, impending doom, whatever you want to call it, it's given her a severe case of insomnia that only leads to fitful sleep or a twilight state.

Tonight she's in the latter - only half awake, mind going over the details of the plan and often sliding into an almost dream-like state where she comes up with terrible scenarios (Moriarty pushes Sherlock off the roof before he can start the plan in motion) and sometimes good ones (Sherlock crashing through a window like an action hero and kissing her breathless).

Her blood runs cold though at the sound of a familiar voice and it takes her a moment to realize she's not dreaming it. The voice is here in her room. She goes still, even her breathing ceases.

"What're you doing here?" she asks finally into the dark of her bedroom as her right arm starts to slowly slide under the covers toward where her mobile sits on the night stand. Her voice wavers a bit.

The dark is where he'll stay. For now. Jim doesn't need the light to orient himself to the surroundings, tracing a careless finger across the top of a dresser.

"I can't visit an old friend? That hurts my feelings, Molly. I'm wounded, truly." His voice is soft, tempered, the accent a touch more pronounced than when they 'dated'. The tone is, well, just a little bit bored.

She can see his dark form moving now, slinking really. Like a snake. She wonders how this can really be the same man she dated. Everything about him is so different.

"We're not friends," she says as she slides to sit up in bed, her hand very close to the mobile now.

Acting, my dear, it's all acting. The world's a stage and all that jazz, something he's always taken a bit too much to heart. The mask merely shifts from one to another and back again, leaving everyone wondering when the real Jim comes in.

(A lot more than people think.)

"No, we were a tad beyond that, weren't we." He smiles at that, white teeth flashing. A spider, a snake, a shark. It's all good. "And I wouldn't do that if I were you. The mobile. Really, it's not like anyone could get here in time. Don't waste your energy."

She's a smart girl. Painfully ordinary, but smarter than most. She'll listen.

She practically shudders at the idea of being more than friends with this man now.

"Barely," she says, jaw set as her arm freezes almost to the phone. "In time for what?"

She tries to make is sound likes she's only indignant and put out by having him in her bedroom, but her voice cracks at the end so she ends up sounding more like a small child instead. In fact, she's just trying to not think of all the sinister reasons why Moriarty has come to visit her tonight.

"But we were," he all but sing songs, enjoying this a lot more than he thought he would. "Who are you even going to call? Scotland Yard? I'm an innocent man, Molly, acquitted in a court of law."

He steps a bit closer, passing a window as he goes. "Not at all unusual for a man to want to celebrate such a righteous act with the lady of his affections." A dramatic sigh sounds. "If only there was one."

"Threatening a jury into finding you innocent doesn't make you an innocent man," she says as she pulls the blankets on her bed tighter against her. Her body is going into fight or flight mode. She can feel her pulse pounding in her ears.

You're smart, Molly. Figure out how to get out of here. Make your own PLAN.

Her eyes flick to the door that's unfortunately shut. Will cost her time. She'll never make it. He passes by the window and she considers that option, but her flat is too far up for her to survive the fall.

"Doubtful that there is," she says to his off-putting comments. She knows he's trying to get to her. "So would you just please tell me why you're here then?"
oldmrfox: (playtime's over now)

"Eyes of the law's all that matters."

He keeps approaching, stopping just short of the bed itself.

"Because I can be. I'd keep that in mind, love."

She backs up into the corner of her mattress, trying to put more room between them as he gets closer.

"You've proven your point," she says as she looks up at him. You can go now. remains unspoken but hanging in the air. A ray of hope slides in that maybe it'll be that easy.

They both know he'll leave when he's good and ready. But she's not wrong; he has made his point and there isn't much else of interest to him here.

Molly isn't as insignificant as she thinks. Sherlock knows this and so does Moriarty. It's a hell of a place to be.

James is done. He leans in as if to kiss, or bite, or scream and then does nothing before retreating for the door.

"Sweet dreams."

She winces when he leans in and turns her face from his, only moving it back to look at him as he retreats back across the room.

"Bugger off," she says under her breath, but feels a great tension leave her body the farther he gets away from her. Her breathing is shallow from it, from the terror of that madman in her room, in her space. She half expects him to come prancing back at her, to terrorize her some more.

Her hands itch to grab up her phone and text Sherlock, but she's worried that's what Jim expects, what he wants, and she can't put THE PLAN at risk.
