For all that Clara may be a mature adult, there's something about snow days that still brings out her inner child. And since David is safely ensconced in blankets inside with a mug of hot chocolate and some cartoons after a few good hours building a snowman (with a lopsided grin made out of pebbles and a quarter of a cucumber for a nose since they were out of carrots) and having a small snowball battle Clara's enjoying the silent stillness while sitting on the front steps of their home.

The moment she hears the sound of Alex's motorcycle (which is easier said than done, but it's just something she's come to know instinctively over the past few months, like the whirring of his servos when he moves or the way he turns when he's walking), she leaps to her feet and grabs one of the few remaining snowballs off of David's pile from earlier. Clara puts her right hand behind her back to conceal the white ball from his line of sight and waves at him with her left hand and a warm smile. And the minute he steps off of the bike, she pulls her arm from behind her back and throws.

It only occurs to her after the fact that this might not be the best idea nowadays, just in case something in him decides to register it as a threat, but it's too late now and the snowball is heading towards his chest.

The good news is Alex Murphy has a complete database of what constitutes as a threat and/or threatening behavior. Snowballs aren’t on the list (Lucky Mrs. Murphy). The bad news is he doesn’t duck like a good sport, go oh, it’s on, you cheater or even flinch. The snowball smacks against his grapheme chest without about as much impact as a round from a Glock.

The visor hisses away from his face, Alex (privately) relieved he hasn’t drawn a damn gun on his own wife. Thank God. Or thank Dr. Norton for realizing snowballs don’t constitute assault on an officer. Realizing his face is frozen in that neutral “park your butt on the curb and don’t move” expression, he relaxes it into a smile. Smiles still aren’t natural, like before. Alex has to work at it, remember how, and it’s distracting because he can see little notifications popping up on his HUD saying what facial muscles are working.

“You serious?” Snow crunches underneath Alex as he marches over to Clara, stopping at the edge of the lawn that’s heaped with white powder. “Should’ve come prepared.”

Like snow-fort prepared. That’s how prepared you have to be against a cyborg. Alex reaches down and scoops out snow, compacting it into the world’s most mathematically perfect snowball. (Okay, so he’s got an advantage, what with 2.6 billion dollars of hardware).

[personal profile] seestheman 2014-03-23 07:35 am (UTC)(link)
Clara may have been holding her breath for a moment, and the initial look on his face definitely didn't help matters. Even if he doesn't shoot her, she has the feeling that she may have just overstepped one of the many boundaries that had sprung up in their relationship. But the instant he smiles the tension that she didn't even realize had seeped into her shoulders floats away.

"Oh, don't worry, I did." Which is, mostly, a lie. There are still some piles of snowballs in the yard from her and David's skirmish that afternoon, but they're hardly enough. Which isn't going to stop Clara from running over to a pile to grab one (that is nowhere near mathematically perfect and is actually more like a snowoval than a snowball).
yourmove: (060)

[personal profile] yourmove 2014-03-23 02:26 pm (UTC)(link)
The smile lights up Clara’s face in a way that can dazzle husbands, cyborgs and cyborg-husbands. There’s probably some sciency term for it Dr. Norton could tell him, but to Alex, all he needed to know was it was perfect.

Alex winds up, aiming for Clara’s back as she makes a break for it, heading for the pile of snowballs he hadn’t seen until then. He’s got pretty damn good accuracy these days and it does occur to Alex he might be borderline cheating (also that in snowball fights with Clara, he needs every edge he can get). Ammo fired, he trudges over to the closest snowbank, bends down, and starts making more, alternating between registering the cold with one hand and actually feeling it with his flesh one.

It’s on.
seestheman: (Safe and sound)

[personal profile] seestheman 2014-03-24 04:40 am (UTC)(link)
Quite frankly, Clara doesn't care if Alex has an unfair advantage over her for once (she remembers, very clearly, a playful argument they had years ago about whether it counted as cheating or an unfair advantage that she had played softball for years growing up and had a tendency to throw her snowballs the same way she used to pitch). She also doesn't care that his snowball connected firmly with her back right in between her shoulder blades and that her hair now has (more) snow in it.

What she does care about is if she can still actually hit him when they're both on the move. Scooping up another snowball (this one much closer to being a snowcube, which really makes her wonder about David and how much of his geometry homework is sinking in) for good measure, she sneaks behind the snowman she helped David build that morning. Pretty sure she's properly lined up so as to be mostly unseen (unless Alex really cheats and decides to go off of temperatures), she throws the snowoval she had picked up previously and crouches down.
yourmove: (041)

[personal profile] yourmove 2014-03-24 08:37 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, it definitely counted, mostly because Alex hadn’t grown up pitching softball: before this, Clara used to out-pitch him, easily. It’s one of those things he both remembers fondly and a little wistfully, too, because it’s a stage of his life that divided by that line called Vallon’s Carbomb.

The sneak-behind-the-snowman maneuver would work if he wasn’t tracking her heat signature, watching the little glow of it peeping around the sides of a snowman he knows has David’s person touch. David’s gotten to be a pro at snowmen over the years: this one’s bigger than last year, incredibly enough. Clara has now found cover and the probability is she’ll try to fire off a snowball while he’s still out in the open. His model - no, his guess, he wants to tell his HUD peevishly – is right, a snowball that looks a little lop-sided slinging his way.

Probably should dodge. As it registers as non-threat, he doesn’t bother. It smacks against his shoulder as he fires off a snowball of his own, aiming a little low and to the side. It should splash off the edge of the snowman.
seestheman: (Life is around you and in you)

[personal profile] seestheman 2014-03-24 05:02 pm (UTC)(link)
And oh it does, with some of the debris from the snowball's collision with Ron-Luke-Fred (David had referred to the snowman as all three over the course of the day and hadn't settled on which one he liked more by the time Clara had finally managed to get him inside. She kind of hopes he settles on Luke so she has an excuse to make a paper towel roll lightsaber to stick on it when David's asleep) hitting her as she makes a few extra snowballs. Uprighting herself, she peers out from behind the snowman and lobs the snowcube at Alex before bending over to grab the rest of her snowballs and making a run for it to the side of the house.

After all, she doesn't want Ron-Luke-Fred to become a casualty. David would never forgive her (at least he wouldn't forgive her before he went to bed).
yourmove: (023)

[personal profile] yourmove 2014-03-25 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
Ron-Luke-Fred lives to see another day, Alex ignoring the snowman to focus on his wife, his head swiveling to track her dash to cover. As cover goes, the side of the house is way better than trying to fend off a cyborg with a snowman. Not a bad tactical choice.

He doesn't fall for the temptation to immediately pursue - that's a rookie move in a snowball fight, just begging to get nailed in the face by running around the corner. (Trust him, he learned the hard way the last time he had a snowball fight). Alex takes the time to get an armful of more snowballs, crafted to have excellent aerodynamic properties because cyborgs only want the best in ammo.

That said, he stalks around the other side of the house, a small pile of snowballs in the crook of his elbow, one in his other hand. It'd probably work if the snow could muffle his heavy tread better...
seestheman: (Something next to normal would be okay)

[personal profile] seestheman 2014-03-25 08:54 am (UTC)(link)
The mix of the sounds he generally makes when walking and the sound of his feet crunching the snow as he walks further away tells her all she needs to know. She may not have temperature reading or targeting technology on her side, but she has a lifetime of snowball fights under her belt.

She steps out from the side of the house, holding a tightly packed softball sized snowball in her hand. While it isn't perfectly shaped or made to be perfectly aerodynamic, it feels familiar. Gripping it like she did what it seems like a million times between the ages of six and fifteen (before she really discovered boys and her oldest sister, Ellen, told her that no one would want to date her if she focused on softball instead of being a proper girl), she winds it up and throws, aiming for the center of his back.
yourmove: (056)

[personal profile] yourmove 2014-03-26 07:53 am (UTC)(link)
One of these days they'll figure out how to make him quieter, like those hybrid cars that sneak up on you and almost run you down because they're just that quiet: the day that happens is the day Alex might, just might, win a snowball fight against Clara.

It'd probably help if he bothered to dodge. That's the downside of his threat-detection these days: if it's not trying to kill him, it doesn't deem to worthy to dodge. If this was paintball, he probably would've lost within the first five minutes.

The snowball smacks against his back with a splat, Alex wheeling around and slinging one of his own snowballs back. He aims a little lower than he normally would, because it's all fun and games until someone takes a snowball to the eye. Alex compensates for Clara to be bent forward from her wind-up, aiming for her torso.
seestheman: (And that's terrible)

[personal profile] seestheman 2014-03-26 06:59 pm (UTC)(link)
His snowball hits a few inches above her navel, impacting against her wool, eggplant colored coat. When Alex turns around, Clara suddenly realizes she made a huge mistake. He has an armload of snowballs. She has lots of snow surrounding her, but no ammo at the ready. She could just go back around the house and grab a few of the spares she left over there, but he'd probably be able to pelt another one or two at her in the meantime.

This isn't Clara's finest moment. Far from it. It's a rookie mistake. At least David's inside so he doesn't hear the "Oh fuck" that slips out of her as she quickly crouches down in the open to build another, much smaller snowball to lob at Alex.
yourmove: (060)

[personal profile] yourmove 2014-03-27 05:09 am (UTC)(link)
"Oh fuck" is right, Mrs. Murphy.

Alex has no mercy because she's never shown him any in all the snowball fights of yesteryear - he immediately starts lobbing snowball after snowball her way with mechanical precision, enough to dust her overcoat with white powder, because he knows if he doesn't, she'll figure out how to one-up 2.6 billion dollars worth of hardware and software and send some poor scientist crying into his clipboard.

"Give up?" Alex would be willing to call it a day if she surrenders (for once). "There's more where that came from."
seestheman: (Life is around you and in you)

[personal profile] seestheman 2014-03-27 04:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Clara's torn about what to do. She could do the smart thing and throw in the towel, but that would mean taking a hit to her dignity that she isn't sure she's ready for. On the other hand, she can keep going and ignore the fact that she's getting tired after being out in the snow for hours, but risk the fatigue making her sloppy. Which, really, would be an even bigger hit to her dignity. If she's going to lose, she's going to lose gracefully.

Well, mostly gracefully. She tosses one last snowball at him before putting her hands up in surrender with a smile. "Fine, you win."
yourmove: (036)

[personal profile] yourmove 2014-03-28 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
"Finally," Alex surprises himself by laughing. Like actually laughing, spontaneous instead of something he has to remember to do with a face that doesn't feel like his half the time. "Years later, but still. Better late than never?"

Snow plops off his armor as he lets his ammo pile tumble to the ground. He wins this round, sure. But something tells him Clara might figure a way to start beating him and he better cherish this victory while he can, cyborg or not.
seestheman: (Brighter than the sun)

[personal profile] seestheman 2014-03-28 05:20 am (UTC)(link)
To hear a laugh like that come out of him is music to Clara's ears. "About damn time. Now let's see how well you do next time, when there's been planning and snow forts and I haven't been out in the snow since eleven."

She tromps (because there aren't very many other ways to describe trying to trek through ankle deep snow) towards him and slips her gloved right hand into his graphene left hand, looks up at him, and beams. "Who knows though, if this keeps up, David might actually take pity on me and team up with me for once."
yourmove: (060)

[personal profile] yourmove 2014-03-29 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
"That's nowhere close to fair," Alex protests, pictures David the Padawan to Clara's Jedi Knight and if there's a way to kick a cyborg's butt with snowballs, they'll be the first ones to discover it. "Two against one?"

He can't help but notice Clara doesn't pause to slip her hand into his, doesn't have that split second hesitation. Alex gives her the tiniest of squeezes, pretty sure her smile is doing some funny things to whatever keeps him alive in this thing.
seestheman: (Something next to normal would be okay)

[personal profile] seestheman 2014-03-29 07:10 am (UTC)(link)
"Since when? The two of you usually team up against me. And from the looks of it, I might end up being the one who needs back up from now on." Not that she completely believes that, but it couldn't hurt to have David on her side.

Clara gives him a firmer squeeze in return and starts walking back towards the house to lead him inside so they can get out of the cold. "We might want to head in, who knows what David's gotten up to in the past twenty minutes."
yourmove: (071)

[personal profile] yourmove 2014-03-31 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
Alex is pretty sure those double-team days are over because having a built-in system might be considered cheating. Just a little bit. "I better enjoy winning while I still can, then."

He walks with her toward the house, taking the front door slow and careful so he doesn't scratch up the door frame or knock his head up against the top. Clara's right about David: twenty minutes is more than enough time for the kid to get into the duct tape again.

"The house hasn't burned down," Alex remarks. "I think we're good."
seestheman: (When tomorrow comes)

[personal profile] seestheman 2014-04-01 04:58 am (UTC)(link)
They are for the time being, at least. The idea of David one day picking up everything he's learned from both of them over the years and using it against them is more than a little terrifying and suddenly flashes through Clara's mind. "I promise that, as soon as I get another win on you, David can go back to being the Robin to your Batman."

Clara has a running list of house-related things that need to be taken care of, either out of necessity or just because, dammit, she wants it done. And seeing the clearance (or lack there of) between the door frame and Alex's head adds another item to her list, because he shouldn't have to be careful walking into his own home. (Though, unlike most things on her list, this is one that definitely will not be DIY and is going to involve having to call someone in to do it, if it can be done at all.)

There's almost an air of stillness in the house. While David's cartoons are still on, she doesn't see him sitting on the couch and quietly walks behind it and then shoots a warm smile at Alex and speaks quietly so as not to disturb the sleeping, cocooned eight year old. "I guess being outside all morning tuckered him out."

Alex grins. "Batman's finally got his armor. Pretty sure we have David's cape somewhere to finish the set."

David had made a damn good Robin for Halloween that year. And the year after that. And after that it was NASCAR for some reason (don't ask him) but then David went back to Robin the next year (and also upgraded to pillowcases instead of the pumpkin bucket. Said it could hold more candy). If there was one plus to this thing, besides being alive to see his family again, it was being Batman, minus the horns. Alex might even think his visor looked cooler, if only barely.

He peeks in around Clara - or, rather, over her head - and has to hide his smile. David has that skill all kids have, the one that says you can sleep anywhere, anytime, and you don't have to worry about waking up stiff. Somehow he's got some kind of blanket burrito deal going on there.

Alex follows Clara into the living room, wishing he could, you know, tip-toe. His feet seem to have one sound setting these days and it's a small miracle David doesn't wake up from that thuds Alex is trying really, really hard to muffle. "Want me to carry him up?"

"It's in his dresser, second drawer under his Iron Man pjs." Which she only knows because she put it there a few days ago after washing it, because David got it absolutely filthy at a superhero-themed birthday party.

Clara doesn't quite have the heart to tell him that, barring the year with the NASCAR costume, this past Halloween was the first one where David wasn't Robin. Which Alex would have known if he had been himself instead of being neurosupressed at the time (though, she kind of wonders if David would have been Robin again if Alex had been around at the time). At some point she'll show him the pictures of David in his Indiana Jones costume. Some point, though, not right now.

She would be impressed that David isn't waking up, except for the fact that she's pretty sure an earthquake could be shaking the house off of its foundations and David would manage to sleep through it. She gazes down at David and shakes her head, enjoying the fact that this all feels so normal. "Nah, it isn't even five. He'll probably be up in a little bit anyway." Though mostly it's that she wants to see the look of surprise on David's face when he realizes that Alex is home early without looking out his bedroom window to see Alex's motorcycle outside.

Now that she's well aware of the time, she realizes that Alex being home this early definitely isn't normal. Not a bad not-normal, just a completely unexpected, but still good-normal. "How'd you swing getting off work so early anyway? Is Detroit's criminal underworld afraid of the snow?"

Somehow he’s not surprised Clara knows exactly where it is – it’s like a Mom Sense. Like a Spidey-Sense but cooler (and scarier, depending on Clara’s mood).

"Doctor's orders," Alex admits. There was a long, probably techno-babble explanation about the specifics, but the short story was Norton was checking up on his neurochemistry or the health of his brain (or whatever) and decided he needed a break. A real one with real stimulus. Alex had thought all he needed to do was say he had two days off and leave it at that. "Got some time off. Jack said he's got this until I'm on duty again."

He shrugs - Alex has finally figured out you can nail shrugging as a cyborg after all - and grins. Reaching out, he entangles his fingers with hers.

If she knew he thought her Mom Sense was scary at times, she would definitely be giving him a small, less than serious glare. Of course, she's never been on the receiving end, so she doesn't exactly have any place to talk.

There's a small shock of worry that shoots through her at the words 'Doctor's orders' until it hits her that Dr. Norton wouldn't have let Alex come home if something was wrong. Shaking off the feeling, she instead rubs the back of his hand with her thumb and grins back at him. "And how long is that going to be?"
