[ he's grown up around stories like this, tales of monstrosities as cautionary warnings against losing ones wits and morals. never once did jean-paul suspect that there was any truth to them, but on an island barren but for the fortress-like home he's encaged himself and his guests in -

it was really only a matter of time before they started coming true.

he can blame the raving on isolation and the loss of erica, can he not? but the tremors, the voices, the flourishes and motives he's aware of in himself when the spirit overtakes him - he can blame that on nothing but his own bargain. he fights it, whenever he can, but it gets tricker and trickier as his will and energy collapse. and that's what brings him, pale and growing gaunt, to allison's lab. ]

Allison. Allison, are you there?

[ some days, it feels like living in a horror story: the kind that adolescents tell around the campfire in the middle of the woods during summer camp or the kind that inspire reckless teenagers to spend the night in abandoned haunted houses. other days, it feels like living in a prison, trapped for an unknown and undeserved crime. it's both a story and a prison that jean-paul has built around his guests in order to silence them. his love for erica is so passionate and so determined that he is willing to take lives in order to save one. it's a conviction that allison sympathizes with, but one that she cannot condone or fully understand.

the point of life is death. if it isn't, then what's the point of living? it's a lesson that allison has desperately tried over the past months to nail in jean-paul's head, but it's as if every attempt of doing so only makes him more resolute. it's an admirable quality, but these rigid morals and convictions are taking a toll on jean-paul. it's clear by the gauntness of his face, the dullness of his eyes, and his sluggish movements. try as he might, he cannot escape the careful eyes of a doctor for long.

the laboratory is a blessing. work and research allows her mind to focus on something other than jean-paul and her frozen sister in the crypt. typically, allison's there, preferring to work rather than stew emotions and grief like the others. his voice is a tremor in the stillness of her lab, causing her to jump a little. ]

Jean-Paul, what are you doing here? [ it's surprising to see him. it's not often that he shows his face around these neck of the woods. he usually only comes around to ask the progress on erica. her answers are always the same and it's not hard to catch a glimpse on disappointment flashing across his face. allison's heard stories of the great jean-paul desmond, even before he became her brother-in-law. it's difficult to reconcile the man in fount of her with the brilliant and dashing character from the tales people speak of. ]

I can't sleep. [ it would be dismissive comment if it weren't delivered in such a groaning tone as he pushes his way through the laboratory door, taking her greeting as permission to enter (not that he needs it, a voice in his head drawls - his common sense actually agrees with; it's his house, his laboratory, if he were to be so selfish to say. selfish enough to restrain people in his house and demand that one of them work to revive his wife, yet selfless enough to repurpose the room and call it hers. a dissonance so strange that it isn't really one at all).

he leaves the door cracked behind him and steps forward to one of the tables, clutching the edge of it while his other hand rubs his head. ] Truthfully, it's been an ordeal since Erica left us.

[ left us. not died. because she can still be summoned back. he manages a smile that appears to be more of a grimace, and god does he look pale. ] I wondered if you might have something to help?

[ it's an excuse if there ever was one, but he can think of nothing else to say. there's a spirit of another attempting to claim my body? no.

his knuckles are white against the table. ]

[ god. his appearance is worse than the last time she saw him which, admittedly, was a few days prior. it's not exactly difficult avoid seeing him, since he seems to avoid any social or physical contact with his guests. if it wasn't for the fact that jean-paul was holding them there against their will, allison would accuse him of being a bad host. ]

Sleeping pills aren't working? [ her brow tugs together, her concern written on her face plain as day. allison doesn't wait for his reply before she moves to a bolted cabinet, unlocking it with a key from her lab coat pocket. for some, over the counter medicine is a coin toss and whether or not it works depends on a variety of conditions like the time, the liquid, and the setting. perhaps something stronger might help...

her hands move through the medicine cabinet, carefully shifting through the brown medicine bottles and eyes swiftly glancing over the black words of each. ] Can you fall asleep or are you just unable?

I have the ability to sleep, yes. [ he doesn't mean to be terse, necessarily, but it's difficult when she's so professional and really, he could down a bottle of brandy and black out, only to likely wake in his own vomit, for all he cares, currently.

something echoes in his head, starts like a ringing, then multiplies into a laugh. he visibly winces, grits his teeth together against it. ] Something - something stronger. Do you have anything?

[ he fights to keep his voice level, staring down at the metal of the table and the line of the fluorescent light reflected onto it. he lets his eyes flicker up as she shuffles through the cabinet, moving through the bottles precisely. ]

[ despite the unordinary and stressful environment, allison is a physician first. at times her heart might bleed for jean-paul (even she can admit it), but in this lab, she is a professional and he is her patient. it is after all the sole reason she elected to remain on the island even when he offered her the chance to escape. staying here and looking after him until he's passed this madness is something allison owes to her sister. erica's done so much for her over the years, what else can allison do but to try to repay the favour?

she spares him a glance over her shoulder, pausing in her movements to take note of his appearance. ] How long can you sleep?

[ "not long" her mind quietly offers and it's tempting to give him the strongest pill just so he can start looking like a human being again. but she doesn't want to prescribe him the wrong treatment if his symptoms and the medicine don't align. grasping one pill bottle in a hand, she takes another in the same before moving from capsule remedies to the injections. ] Fortunately, Dr. Menkin maintained a ready supply of sleep aid. Anyways, I'm sure I could synthesize one if nothing helps.

[ "not long" is his first instinct, as well, and he bites his tongue against saying that.

ah, you do have a smart streak in you. surely she'd appreciate the fire - ] No -!

[ one of these days, he'll stop himself before realizing he protests at the open air, but jean-paul goes quiet for a moment, letting the exclamation hang there, echoing throughout the silence of the lab as allison continues her work. ]

An hour at a time, if that. [ when he speaks again, it comes in a whisper, and jacques is silent in his head for the time being and for heaven's sake, he just wants to rest. to block it all out. to dream of darkness and nothing and have his mind completely blank. the tension in his face eases when he sees the medicine, real and waiting. ] As you can see, certainly not enough.

[ his outburst causes her to stop, hand frozen in midair as she reaches for another bottle. these incidents have been occurring with increased frequency and intensity, and she never knows what to properly say or do afterwards. the physician part of her mind wonders if giving drugs to a person that experiences wild mood swings and random outbursts would be very wise; while the caring friend part counters that perhaps sleep would stop these episodes. if it makes him look human again, she'll try anything.

a clear bottle of valium is the last medicine she adds to her collection and she turns to share her search with jean-paul. allison offers him a smile, setting down a variety of sleep aids in fount of him. ] A blind man could see it. [ it's a light-hearted joke meant to defuse the tense and gloom atmosphere in the lab. the mansion is in need of a good joke and perhaps that will make everything look a little less of despair and misery. ]

[ jacques remains quiet, for the time being, and jean-paul allows a little smile to pull at the corners of his lips. he takes a breath, and for a moment, he seems to be living in the present as opposed to somewhere off inside his head, or in the past, or in the future. however, he doesn't laugh. mirth is a strange thing here.

he lifts the bottles one by one, scanning them over with his eyes and his expression turns steely and curious, but there's a twinkle in his eyes that grows as he goes down the line, and he looks toward her as he places the final bottle down. ] Allison, I believe you've enough power here to kill a man.

[ mirth is a strange thing here but it should be welcomed. indeed, the house and even its master could do with some mirth, perhaps suffering less melancholy and feeling more relaxed. allison can only prescribe so much drugs before it becomes useless; laughter is the best medicine, after all. jean-paul shouldn't suffer his wife's death for too long and feel like he can't partake in simple pleasures ever again until she lives again. her death shouldn't mean his as well.

allison laughs a little, picking a brown bottle up from the nearly identical pile and placing it aside. ] A doctor's job is to save, not kill. Or, barring that -- [ her eyes narrow as she reads the label on another bottle before setting it aside. ] -- to harm as little as possible.

[ however, erica was truly the only new life on maljardin. the loss of her means the loss of that means the loss of everything light, everything happy, even remotely so. the foreign delight seems to disappear from his face as suddenly as it went, and he eyes the bottles again. ]

What do you recommend? Truthfully, I'd rather attempt the strongest and be done with it.

[ perhaps allison isn't the right person to debate with jean-paul regarding his extreme attachment and obsession with erica. she's too close to the problem and, besides, psychology isn't her training. since she was young, she always preferred the flat facts of science to complicated and tangled emotions. it's easy to save a life, but harder to convince someone to save their own.

a frown creases her features as she quickly makes divides the drugs into a smaller pile, separating the least effective from the more effective and the muscle relaxers from the tranquilizers. ] Strongest isn't always the safest, Jean-Paul.

[ finally she finds one that should put her brother-in-law to sleep with the least amount of dangers involved. with a crocked brow, she holds it out for him but doesn't make a move to hand it to him just yet. ] Tell me immediately if there's any side effects. Day or night, my door's always open.

Burning the midnight oil yourself, Doctor? [ there's a certain drawl to his voice that makes jean-paul's eyes go wide, and he reaches out to close his hand around the bottle. frankly, at this point, the sooner he gets out of here, the better. he hadn't felt jacques' influence that time, only a strange note seeping into his voice, next his mannerisms, before he loses full control. he makes to take the bottle. ]

I try not to most nights. [ she rubs her eye with the heel of her palm, the previous midnight oil burnings clearly visible on her face for that one moment. the look is gone as quickly as it appeared though, and she gives jean-paul a self-assured smile to keep him from worrying and to convince herself that she made the right decision staying here. ] You are my patient after all and, if I am to stay here, I intend to take care of you as best as I can.

[ her hand inches closer to his before she draws back for a moment, stressing her orders. ] Take two before bed -- and no alcohol. Can you promise me that?

Only if you assure me that it won't help them go down easier.

[ and there it is again, that light sing-song tone, and this time, jean-paul is too exhausted to push it from his mind. let the damn ghost overtake him if he wants to so badly; by allison's logic, he'll soon be so close to dead himself that he won't even notice it. he takes the bottle and shakes it with a sigh, hand dropping to hang by his hip. ]
