NIGHT IN JAIL MEME

The Night In Jail Meme

shamelessly stolen from here

No matter how careful you are, no matter how good you try to be--well, sometimes things just happen. Maybe you need to fudge a few little rules for the greater good, or maybe you're a full-time villain with no regrets. Either way, everyone has to slip up sometime--and this time, there just so happened to be law enforcement involved to catch you as you fell. What happened to get you into this fiasco, and how will you cope?

Warning: This meme deals with criminal activity and confinement, and has the potential to get into explicit detail. Please be aware of any triggers you may have concerning subjects like these, and make sure to state any preferences you may have.

How to play:
1. Respond to this post with your characters--be sure to put their name and canon in the subject line, and include any preferences you may have.
2. Feel free to set up the scene yourself, or leave it to those who respond to you.
3. Click here to select a crime, and here to select a scene, or go to the RNG site and roll your own numbers.
4. Start playing! AUs and canon-blending alike are highly encouraged, as is characters who actually are cops or lawyers tagging around and getting to strut their stuff.

Crime

1. I fought The Law, and The Law won: You really don't mess around, do you? You're running right up against the law and government in its purest form. Did you try to resist arrest? Flee probation? Conspire to commit treason against the government? Maybe you didn't even do anything wrong, and you're being unlawfully held with no warrant, no conviction, and no hope of a fair trial. However it happened, it looks like you're in dire straits.

2. Civil disobedience:
Fight the Man! You represent the will of the people! You're a political prisoner, and you regret nothing, even if the authorities are abusing their power and position. Whether you were organizing a peaceful protest, or engaging in a little ideologically-motivated terrorism, you're out to prove a point and ensure that justice will be served in the end.

3. No entry: You really shouldn't have gone in there, should you? Whether it was simple tresspassing, forcible breaking and entering, outright burglary, or just sneaking into an abandoned building, you've been caught somewhere you have no right to be.

4. Up with your sticky hands, this is a fuck-up!:
So, what caught your eye? Some smug fat cat who needs to learn the meaning of charity? A bank or jewelry store that didn't seem to have surveillance? Vital medical equipment you just couldn't afford? Whether it was armed robbery or a more hands-off theft, you've taken what doesn't belong to you.

5. Let's take this outside: That was one hell of a fight! Who won? Hopefully you gave as good as you got. And hopefully the other guy is doing just as much time as you are. Assault, public brawling, illegal use of firearms, or even self-defense gone wrong--as long as it's violent, you're going to have a hard time explaining yourself to the police that pulled you out and patched you up.

6. Hit list:
Sometimes, just roughing someone up isn't enough. Sometimes, a more permanent solution is needed. Cold-blooded murder plots, a struggle gone too far in the heat of the moment, or perhaps just a terrible accident on the highway--however it happened, you've ended another person's life.

7. Superheroics don't pay:
Not your average criminal, are you? No, you're the sort who should really be dealt with by special forces, not your work-a-day beat officers. Maybe you're a diabolical supervillain whose scheme got foiled, (again) or you shouldn't be here at all--you were the guy in the cape trying to save the city! The citizens, however, don't seem to appreciate the fact that your heroic defense included large explosions, vast collateral damage, or dozens of innocent lives being held in the balance to bait you into coming to fight your archnemesis. Maybe you and your cellmate were the two super-powers slugging it out, or maybe you're master and sidekick, but one thing is for sure--no normal jail cell can hold you. Unluckily for you, it seems this prison was well-prepared.

8. Organized crime: So, are you the criminal mastermind orchestrating illicit operations all over the city? Are you a much-abused mook who just happens to work for this sadistic madman for a living? Maybe you're a mercenary hitman, or just a kneecap-breaker and debt collector. Whatever your position, you're not one to operate in a vacuum, and it looks like you've made one wrong step too many. Hopefully your colleagues will get you out safely--if you don't sell them out first.

9. White collar crime: A bit too sophisticated for dirtying your hands, are you? You know your way around the business world, and you know how to make it give you exactly what you want. Money laundering, embezzlement, corporate espionage..... so long as it involves a respectable workplace, there's a good chance you've got a hand in it. Did your boss finally find you out?

10. Indecent exposure: .....Wow. Uh. W-would you like a coat? Maybe you decided to streak for some reason, maybe you decided to skinny dip in a public fountain, maybe you couldn't find any covering for your walk of shame, or maybe you and your lover got caught in an intimate position in public, but whatever happened, you've bared it all to the wrong eyes.

11. Bad trip:
You smoked what? And they found you where? Whether you were selling, using, or simply in possession of them, you've been caught with some illegal drugs. Drunk driving, sharing a joint with some friends, or maybe doing some of the harder stuff--you'll have a while behind bars to come crashing down and face the music.

12. Goddamned kids!: It isn't like this crime had a victim! Really. All you did was throw bricks through a few windows, or set fire to an abandoned warehouse, or spray paint graffiti onto public property, or maybe egg and toilet paper some loser's house. Whether you were vandalizing things, disturbing the peace, or just up to miscellaneous criminal mischief, you must have had bad luck to get caught by an officer having a lousy day.

13. Drunken shenanigans: Well, it looks like somebody had a wild night! You might be high-fiving your partner in crime and reveling in just how awesome that stunt you pulled was, you may be terribly hung over and regretting every second of your escapades, or you might not even remember what in the world you did to get locked up to begin with. Here's hoping it was at least fun enough to be worth the trouble you've gotten yourself into.

14: This isn't what it looks like! You've got the wrong guy!:
Wow, it must really suck to be you. Either you were an accomplice who was thrown under the bus to take the punishment for everyone else, you were framed for a crime you didn't commit, there's a serious case of mistaken identity going on, or you were just some innocent bystander caught in the crossfire. Hopefully you can convince them of your innocence before it's too late.

15. Sweating the small stuff:
Who shoved a stick up that officer's ass? Seriously, who gets arrested for littering? Or jaywalking? Or smoking at a bus stop? This is beyond ridiculous. Maybe if you can talk to some other, hopefully sane officer, you can get this whole mess straightened out.

16. You can get anything you want, at Alice's Restaurant:
Got the perfect crime in mind? Don't see your offense listed above? Mix n' match, choose which you want, or create your own!

Scene

1. Caught red handed: Oh, now you've done it. The sack of money is still in your hand, or the body is still in your trunk, or maybe you reek so badly of alcohol they sniffed you out from a block away. What'll you do, now that there's no denying what you've done?

2. On the run: Whether it's a high-speed car chase, trying to climb a chain link fence, or a grueling crawl through the sewer system, you're trying to evade justice. Hope you're good at thinking on your feet!

3. Busted: No getting out of it this time. You're getting a very thorough patdown, being handcuffed, and stuffed into the back of the patrol car. The arrest is in progress, and there's nothing you can do about it.

4. Police interrogation: Down in the station, this is your one chance to persuade them of your innocence--or have them crack your resolve and make you spill everything you know. Are they playing good cop and bad cop with you? Using illegal torture methods? Does anyone even know you're here, or are these a different sort of police entirely?

5. Guard and prisoner: The arrest and crime alike are definitely past you now. Now you've got to deal with the people holding your life in your hands for the long haul. Maybe if you're lucky, or persuasive, or just have something to bribe them with, they'll be inclined to make your life a little easier.

6. I want a lawyer!:
Even a prisoner has rights, after all. You've been allowed some legal counsel, so you'd better make the best of it. Just how sympathetic are they? Do you trust them to do you any good? Or are they just one more of law enforcement's dogs?

7. Cellmates: It looks like you two are going to be roommates for a long, long time, whether you know each other or not--better make yourselves comfortable and get acquainted. Who knows some party games?

8. Your one phone call:
You're in it up to your ears, now. Who will you turn to, with only one chance to contact the outside world? Will they come in to bail you out, or let you suffer the consequences of your actions?

9. Visiting hours: Awww, someone came to keep you company? How sweet! Hopefully they didn't come just to laugh at your misfortune.

10. The Great Escape: Maybe you and your cellmate are plotting to break out, or maybe a friend on the outside has come to rescue you--either way, you're busting out of this joint. Freedom!

11. Who was that masked man, anyway?:
Got an idea for a scenario or relationship you can't see on here? Go wild!

It would either be the wisest or the stupidest decision he'd made today.

The uncertainty between the two was the only thing that made Mikado hesitate. Things were decidedly messier than planned -- he was a mess -- so he was taking the time to make sure he was thinking straight (a mild concussion, they'd said? He could believe it.), that he'd considered every option and run through as many possible outcomes as he could for what was about to follow. It was almost relaxing, compared to everything else lately, and relaxing was all he really could do at this point. He wasn't going anywhere.

The usual list was out. Blue Square couldn't do anything for him right now. Neither could Masaomi, assuming he could be reached, or several others that came to mind, and Anri -- well. Mikado wasn't desperate yet. His parents were an obvious out, and he was just glad that, at eighteen, he was spared the dependent-minor requirements that would've been a hassle just months ago.

The general list was a small one, the list of those useful even smaller. He took that precautionary moment to reconsider -- and then he tapped in the number. His phone had been confiscated, of course, but he didn't need the reference. He kept moving his free hand to his jacket pocket out of habit as he waited, thoroughly uncomfortable with that sense of being so closed off and cut out.

The police station itself hadn't managed that; just the absence of his cell was enough to throw him more off-balance than the concussion.

Indeed! :T

Izaya is sitting in his office when his phone rings - one of his phones, that is; his regular number, rather than one of his more private ones. He grabs the phone automatically, his other hand still clicking through things on his computer, and looks at the screen out of habit before he even considers picking it up.

Unknown caller... Well, well. Those are generally the most pointless calls, but they can also be the most interesting ones. Why not? Izaya can spare a minute.

"Hello?"
worldwithoutcolor: ($ He learns to live)

[personal profile] worldwithoutcolor 2013-08-21 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
He picked up. It's a start, and probably the hardest part, honestly.

There's no hint of relief or anything along those lines in Mikado's voice; just cheery politeness. "Ah, evening, Izaya-san! Sorry to call so late." The public chatter of the station behind him can't be hidden, so he doesn't try. Still, between that, the unfamiliar number, and the hour, Izaya's probably deducing something's amiss as he speaks-- assuming he's not his usual step ahead and knows exactly where Mikado is already. It wouldn't be that surprising.

"I hope I'm not interrupting anything."

[personal profile] hitorabu 2013-08-22 07:37 am (UTC)(link)
As it happens, Izaya doesn't already know what happened. It's entirely possible that certain parties have worked hard to ensure that; it's also possible that he's simply been too busy for looking beyond the surface - and it's a big city, after all.

But he's deducing plenty. That said, a police station isn't the first thing that comes to mind in relation to Mikado, even if the unknown number stands out. A train station seems most likely (and some do still have public pay phones), but the sounds don't seem quite right - and even if it was a train station, why would Mikado..?

"Not at all. But I do wonder why you'd call me from a place like that."

Fishing? Who's fishing? Certainly not Izaya; his voice is as calm and self-assured as ever. He just means a public phone, obviously.

"Well, not to sound desperate, but I don't really have a choice." Mikado's tone doesn't budge an inch as he's intentionally vague. He can't tell what Izaya does or doesn't know already, but one thing he's learned about him -- far too late into the game, sadly -- is that despite all appearances, the man doesn't know everything, and sometimes it's best not to automatically give him every detail right away.

Mikado shifts to lean back against the counter, idly rotating the bulky cuff around his left wrist without audibly clinking it. "Have you been watching the news, Izaya-san?"

Even if he has, and even if the story's hit the air already, there's a chance it was overlooked. An account of one young man arrested on his involvement in a violent assault, rather than a group, wouldn't lead most to connect it with Mikado.

"I've listened to it, more or less. While it rarely has anything actually new to tell me, it makes for very calming background noise."

Unlike Mikado's voice. While Izaya isn't worried, as such, there's something just a little odd about this phone call. Another few clicks of his mouse, closing windows that he's done with, and he does his best to focus on the conversation - if only to end it quickly.

"If it's a conversation about current affairs you have in mind, I'm sure you have a friend or two left that you could call for that."
worldwithoutcolor: in this world without rules ($ He relies on power)

[personal profile] worldwithoutcolor 2013-08-22 03:33 pm (UTC)(link)
"I probably do, if that was the case," he replies easily, unfazed by the jab. It's telling, really; if that's the only below-the-belt shot Izaya's making, he really must not know. "It's a little more serious than that, though. I actually have a favor to ask, if you're interested."

The wording there -- "favor," not "job" -- is intentional. Leaning back a bit, Mikado steals another glance at the TV in the lobby. He can't hear it from here, but the headline's legible even with one eye slightly blurred.

"Channel six," he adds, before Izaya can answer. "They're recapping it now, but maybe it'll be more than just background noise this time."

The report doesn't have many details -- just the short teaser that a local man was shot during a break-in at his apartment. He was rushed to the hospital, died on the way, and police have one suspect in custody -- whose name and face haven't yet been leaked.
hitorabu: (☖)

[personal profile] hitorabu 2013-08-22 05:07 pm (UTC)(link)
On the other end of the phone, Izaya remains suspiciously silent. As tempting as it is to give up on the phone call altogether, he's more than a little curious, and since he's gone this far -... Well, he may as well satisfy his curiosity, right? It's not like Mikado does this sort of thing every day - and that in itself makes Izaya wonder.

The remote is, like most other useful things, within reach on his desk, and he flicks the tv on to turn it to the channel indicated. Oh yes, that shooting. Izaya was wondering about that, but it was an idle sort of curiosity; enough to investigate the name of the victim (not yet released either, but that was hardly a challenge), which wasn't interesting enough to keep digging. As for the suspect, well... Since that suspect was already in custody, there wasn't much reason for Izaya to keep digging - unless someone paid him.

Mikado's call narrows things down, of course. There's only one possible connection to Mikado that Izaya can think of. "Someone you know?" The suspect is probably in Dollars, right? Why else would Mikado be concerned?
worldwithoutcolor: he just needs to stay in touch. and available. all the time. ($ He isn't addicted)

[personal profile] worldwithoutcolor 2013-08-22 05:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Despite the circumstances, Mikado finds himself smiling. Not the default, half-forced polite smile he's been wearing to keep his voice up, but a look that's genuinely amused. Whether it's an arrogant kind of power rush or just relief at finding that he has control over a few things even now... he doesn't bother trying to differentiate. He's on a timer, after all, and he's already spent a lot of it.

"Not the victim, no." He can't say as much as he wants to, with at least his side of the conversation being recorded, so he leaves it at, "But I think he did have some kind of run-in with some friends of mine a while back, so I'm hoping they won't try to use that against me."

[personal profile] anri_sonohara 2013-08-23 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
All around her, she heard the hum of conversation, drifting in and out of focus as she walked along to her designated table. Every now and then the young student caught the usual whisper of comments, some directed towards her, some standing completely separate. And then there were the catcalls from the more vocal attendants speckled sparingly among the crowd. All of it came together to create a very familiar and alienating feeling.

It reminded her of the cafeteria of Raina Academy, groups of people huddling together and existing in their own little bubbles while the world continued to turn. And much like her, they were simply trying to find some semblance of calm and normalcy.

Because similar or not, there was no forgetting that she was walking through the visitor's yard of a prison.

She came to their designated table without problem if not with only a brief moment of nervous anxiety, clutching the handle of her schoolbag for comfort while her mind tried to work over the events that led her hear. That led him here. Because Mikado couldn't be the villain they were making him out to be by sending him here. Surely, he was still the innocent young man she once knew...

miss, conjugal visits aren't until after nine

[personal profile] worldwithoutcolor 2013-08-23 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
As soon as he'd heard he had a visitor, Mikado's first reflex had been to hope that it wasn't her.

He viewed outside company as a bittersweet, unwanted-but-wanted kind of occurrence, both a breath of fresh air and a wistful reminder of everything he'd left behind. Depending on who it was, it could be one more than the other; Masaomi only invoked the latter when the day was done, and Anri... Mikado hadn't been forced to put up with that jab to his conscience. Not until today.

He was glad they didn't do anything as dramatic as lead him over in handcuffs. Only the worst cases required that, and all things considered, Mikado generally wasn't too high up on the threat level list. Even so, there was a frigid moment when his eyes went straight to her from the doorway, his heart seeming to drop out of him entirely.

Why was she here.

It was no mystery, of course. She was here because of him, for him, all because he'd messed up and dragged everyone else down with him. Not as far as he'd fallen, but far enough.

As he approached, Mikado shot glances around the room, hoping he'd see Masaomi catching up -- not because he wanted to see him as much as he wanted to know that Anri surely hadn't come here alone...

...but she had. Because she would. For him.

At the table, he gave a brief half-bow -- stiff, but no less polite than it had ever been. It wasn't until he was seated that he made eye contact, but just for a moment before his gaze settled somewhere around her neck instead, obvious shame in the motion and on his face.

"Sonohara-san." Even now, even after everything, he went back to her surname. It was respectful, but it was also routine, familiar -- and a little distant. "It's good to see you. Did you wait long?"
anri_sonohara: (Are You Pondering What I'm Pondering)

"Um... no. Only a few minutes, really." Only a few weeks since you disappeared, really. But that was hardly anyone's fault.

For a while, she'd put off visiting. At first it had been at Kida's insistence. - Mikado needed time to adjust. He was a bit too embarrassed to face her. Prison was no place for someone like her to be. - But as time moved on, life simply settled into a new routine; one that had taken him out of the picture. And for some time, she had started making up her own reasons not to go, each day simply just hoping that Mikado would suddenly show up at school or on their walks around the district as if nothing had changed. As if they were still first years finding their own way in the world.

Then her birthday had passed by without fanfare, and she'd found that there seemed to be a hollowed emptiness left behind where something whole and pure once was; a weight that simply could not be be shouldered for much longer if she wanted things to continue on with some semblance of peace. And in that moment, Anri made the decision to do something for herself instead of relying on the strength of others.

In that moment, with Saika's whispers swirling around her head, Anri grabbed control of her life and gave in to her own impulses.

Drawing on that same resolve, the young student idly fixed the tightness of her scarf and carefully - nervously - tucked a strand of hair behind her ear before setting her gaze on the object of her affectionsconcerns; the only person who could fix the odd hole he'd left behind with his confinement. "How... how are you doing, Ryuugamine-kun?"

Good, she hoped, even despite where he was, now...

it's Anri he wants her always :|

[personal profile] worldwithoutcolor 2013-08-23 05:12 pm (UTC)(link)
The saving grace about her visit was that Mikado had had time to heal up. He hadn't been in the best condition when arriving in the first place, but a few days in he was jumped by several guys -- four? Five? He couldn't even remember. -- at least one of whom had been familiar. They'd wisely kept visible injuries to a minimum, lessening the odds that the guards would notice and get after them for it; by now, Mikado's face and arms were fine again, but his ribs were still various shades of black and blue. He was honestly surprised nothing had been broken.

At her question, his eyes went up again, to hers, just long enough to try and be convincing. "I'm--" Fine wouldn't cut it and he knew it. "--getting by."

He looked away again, staring out across the room, but he had eyes for nothing but the young woman across from him. He didn't want to look at her too long, afraid of seeing a difference in the way she looked back at him, if anything had changed since last time. By all rights, it should have. The things he'd done, directly and otherwise, all while hiding everything from her... she should hate him. She didn't, and that much was obvious, but it didn't mean she wasn't disgusted by him. Disappointed in him.

"Sonohara-san... you shouldn't--" Mikado cut himself off, forcefully. He'd been short with her before -- just once -- and he wouldn't do it again, or even come close. She was different from everyone else; even when Masaomi visited, there had been some heated words in the aftermath of everything that had happened, that had caused this, but with Anri, it was always different. Maybe that was selfish of him, putting her before others in select ways, but... he owed her that much.

"...You didn't have to come," he tried again. "I mean -- you don't have to force yourself. I know this isn't..."
anri_sonohara: (What a Mess)

And what a beautiful moment that will be when she realizes it ;3;

[personal profile] anri_sonohara 2013-08-24 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
His answer does little to alleviate her concerns, knowing and suspecting just how harsh jail life could be with their strict rules and regulated daily activities. And the idea of it - that he would hide the extent of it from her - only makes Anri worry even more. It had probably been some stroke of luck that she had even been allowed to see him. But did he even have a choice on the matter? Or were these meetings a one-sided deal where the inmates simply showed up whenever a visitor came calling? If that were the case...

Mentally shaking away such thoughts, the young woman took a quiet breath to steady her nerves. Now was not the time for doubt, not when he was so close and looking so lost; looking just like how she felt. And even if he was saying, in his own way, that he wanted her to stay away from him, Anri knew that she wouldn't.

"I wanted to come." He should know better than anyone that she can't. She just couldn't. "I... I wanted to see you."

Whether he chose to look at her then or not, Anri, at the very least, lifted up her eyes to the possibility of meeting his gaze. Because there was a weight to those words she hadn't exactly intended. But that didn't make them any less true. It didn't make this air between them any less than what it was. Three years of history, dancing around each other like fireflies in the dark could not be erased so easily.

...Right?

"I should've come sooner. I meant to." They had been patient and considerate. They had waited for the day that Kida was done running away and came home, all the while knowing that they should've been more; more than this and more than who they were. And somehow, between then and now, it all went so terribly wrong. "But you were... you were dealing with a lot - I didn't want t... to bother you..."

"You're not bothering," he said quickly -- a little too quickly, maybe, because Mikado seemed to wince after it was out. That would have been enough to put some color in his face once, or at least make him stutter, but after everything, with her and otherwise, it felt so minor. As if that innocence had ended more years back than he'd even been alive, or had just been in another life altogether.

The weight in those words were noticed, enough to make him look at her again. Despite his discomfort, Mikado didn't look away.

"...I just -- it's not fair, making you come here." But that was his own fault. The fact that he'd ended up here in the first place aside, he could have called her; he'd considered it, several times, but always lost his nerve. Maybe it was something selfless, not wanting to keep her attached to him, or maybe it was just that same fear of discovering how much he'd changed in her eyes.

"But -- how about you, Sonohara-san? How have you been?" It was an abrupt change of subject, the note of enough about me unspoken but implied. Even so, it wasn't just a topic shift. Mikado had had other worries since being incarcerated -- since his relation to the Dollars was made public -- and now was as good a time as ever to find out if any of them were grounded.

"It was my choice..." You weren't... making me do anything.

The voice was small and the comment mumbled softly under her breath with the intent of having them only reach her ears. But if Mikado happened to still hear it, well... there was very little she could do to change that. And she wouldn't want to, really. Because this was important, and so was he. And because of those reasons, what he thought difficult or unfair for her meant very little by comparison. The need to see him had outweighed it all.

Still, she felt no closer to an answer or any sort of comfort than before the visit began.

Fingers fidgeting with the handle of her schoolbag, she shifted her glance to the side in thought, sorting through the catalog of events that had happened since his incarceration. Not that there was much to tell, otherwise. With the exception of Kida and Mikado - and the occasional cameo from Celty and Shizo - there were very few other people in her life.

"Ah. I've been... managing." Which was vague enough to hold an entire host of possible reasons, both good and bad. On top of this matter concerning Yellow Scarves and Blue Squares and remnants of the Slasher faction, she had her final year of school focus on, and apprenticeships to consider for afterwards. "A lot different from when we were First-Years."

He probably deserved that; a vague answer for a vague answer. Like most things -- anything -- he couldn't hold that against her.

Mikado nodded, more an automatic gesture than any form of agreement. "Y-Yeah... things have really... changed." That was the understatement of the year, and his self-reproachful frown suggested that he realized it.

"Then there hasn't been any trouble or anything?" He might as well be direct; he had nothing to lose by doing so. "For you and Masaomi, I mean... since I came here." Any backlash in their direction was his first concern -- someone angry enough to take out old rivalries on his friends when they couldn't reach Mikado himself. He watched Anri directly as he asked, searching for a hint that she was hiding or downplaying anything.

But some things, though; they stayed the same.

Mikado's concern over his friends was one that she welcomed whole-heartily; like a warm blanket on a cold winter morning. It assured that a part of his old self was still there, deep inside under all of the calculations and dark dealings. That the boy who used to stutter and fidget and blush whenever she smiled - who fought for the possibility of happy endings - would still be there waiting for her on the other side of this ordeal.

Anri, at the very least, hoped for it.

For now, though, she would treat him as the adult he'd become while she'd been too concerned over the wicked suggestions whispering in her ear. And that meant telling him truths that the young woman wanted nothing more than to gloss over and hide. Months ago - a lifetime - she might still have. But the time for vague answers and dancing around the subject had come to an end.

Sighing softly, she decided to take the honest route, knowing that he'd be able to see any lies or half-truths she told. This far down the line, there was very little that they could hide from each other. This far from grace, he deserved no less. "There was some, in the beginning, but... Kida-kun said he took care of it."

It didn't surprise him, necessarily -- Mikado had a much better idea of how the world worked now than he had three years ago, and that included firsthand experience in how everything a person did always, always had an effect somewhere, on someone -- but her confirmation sent a vein of anger through him all the same and something in his face darkened at it. Everything he'd done, the sacrifices he'd made, and in the end he'd only left them to clean up his messes. He had a better idea now more than ever of how capable his two friends were at handling themselves, Anri especially, but that didn't make it any less wrong.

It was enough to make him wish that -- well, it didn't matter what he wished, because he was here, effectively cut off from everything he'd known. Except during times like now, anyway, and if Anri could see the things flitting through his mind, thoughts triggered by the developed impulse to plan a solution in the only way Mikado knew how anymore -- through power and violence and fear -- he didn't doubt that she would be disappointed in him.

Looking back, he couldn't pinpoint exactly when he'd made something of a reversion -- "improvement," arguably, recovering a good deal of his old self, his original self, even if now and again the two sides spilled over onto one another. It might have been before he ended up here, or maybe right after. A lot of those memories were a black and white blur.

"...Sorry." The apology was sincere, even if his suddenly flat tone didn't sound like it. Even if the apology was virtually worthless. Anri might have helped Mikado hold the balance better than anyone else, but under the weight of everything now, not even her presence could keep him from slipping. "I really am useless to you... now more than ever."

Just how specific that "you" was, he didn't make clear, but she was obviously a large part of it. After the hole he'd dug himself into, he couldn't face the repercussions directly; his closest friends had to deal with that. Prison dangers aside, Mikado was still, in a sense, safe here while an affected world moved on outside.

He couldn't even suffer from his mistakes correctly. He really was a failure, in every sense of anything he'd ever tried to do.

The shifts in his face were subtle - almost unreadable. But there were only two people in this world who knew him best and could read the hidden meanings in his actions.

By some stroke of luck and fortune, she had become one of them.

But there was no disappointment - never for him or who she'd help him become - only concern and fear. Because Mikado was intelligent and resourceful. And with those abilities, it was very easy for him to take things too far to a place where even Kida - where she - couldn't follow. If he hasn't already.

"Please. Just leave it be. Kida-kun took care of it." And with those words, it was a tentative shift to reach out her hand towards him. Where years ago, she might have hesitated and only made it halfway through the gesture before retreating, now Anri was bolder and more confident. Now she had a reason to be.

Because she had stood by long enough, just watching and waiting with false hope as he slowly spiraled down to this darker version of himself that landed the young man here, in incarceration. When she should have done something to stop it then. More than his parents - more than Kida, even, maybe - she could've been the one person to stop it all from going so badly and so far down this road. If she only had the strength to face it, then.

"We're both fine," - They were free, living both their lives as they should be, on the outside. - "It's just... you. Now."

Because they were a matched set. Because they needed nothing else in the world as long as they had each other - her, Kida, and Mikado against the world. And until he was back on the outside with them, there would always be a part of her that seemed incomplete. Didn't he understand that?

And now, on top of everything else, he was predictable. Then again, when a person hit rock-bottom... wasn't that a definition of predictable, in a way? Always resorting to the same bad choices, the same desperate maneuvers, never able to see a better way and climb out of that hole. That was probably how addictions worked, and in a sense, that was what had landed Mikado here. An addiction to control, to always pushing things one, two, three steps too far, not caring how much it hurt himself or, after a while, those around him. The very reasons for his self-proclaimed mission had been forgotten over time, and then there was nothing except that need to keep going and finish what he'd started. Even if he'd managed it, that wouldn't have been the end of it, though. He wouldn't have settled for idleness after all that.

The movement of Anri's hand earned a look, a blink, as if Mikado couldn't quite understand why she was reaching for him. After a pause, he set one arm on the tabletop, hesitantly returning the gesture -- only to stop just short of making any contact.

Masaomi had taken care of it. Mikado wanted to ask, but he was afraid to -- and that was assuming Anri herself even knew the full details. Just what had he pushed his best friend into? What lengths had he gone to in order for them to just live their daily lives?

At the very least, Mikado could appease her with this, a simple promise not to attempt anything. It wasn't as if he could in his present circumstances, anyway. He nodded stiffly.

"Just me," he echoed, but that frost in his voice was lukewarm now. "It... It'll be three years, but... don't--" His frown deepened. He couldn't tell her not to worry. "But I'll make it through."
